00:00Meanwhile, it's important for us to take care of our water resources,
00:04including coral reefs, mangroves, and other marine ecosystems
00:09because they serve as the home of our marine species.
00:13You're right, Audrey.
00:14That's also the goal of Miss Cuba Philippines.
00:17But Miss Cuba Philippines is not just a beauty pageant,
00:20but a platform to promote marine conservation and sustainable diving practices.
00:25And if that's the case, we'll be joined this morning
00:28by the Ocean Advocate and Miss Cuba Philippines 2024, Jane Darin.
00:32Good morning, Lisa.
00:33Good morning, Jane.
00:34Good morning, everyone.
00:36Thank you for having me.
00:37It's a pleasure to have you.
00:38So you've been a scuba diver?
00:40Yes, since 2018.
00:42Isn't there a level?
00:43Well, there is actually.
00:45It started with DSD, and then you're going to have the open water.
00:48And my license is advanced.
00:50Okay.
00:51So I can go deeper than the open water.
00:53So it's hard to get a candidate.
00:55You have to be beautiful and have a license to be a scuba diver.
01:00But Jane, tell us about your journey in this competition.
01:04So actually, it's really not an easy journey
01:07because I competed in Miss Cuba Philippines way back in 2018.
01:11Okay.
01:12After I graduated college, I moved here in Manila to just try my luck in the national competition.
01:20You're originally from?
01:21From Davao.
01:22From Davao, okay.
01:23And then, luckily, Miss Cindy Maduma, our national director,
01:27chose me to be one of the candidates last 2018.
01:30And then, after six years now,
01:32she posted something about candidates for Miss Cuba International.
01:37So I tried my luck again, and then, yeah.
01:39Okay.
01:40I'm so grateful for that.
01:41And thank you to my national director.
01:43So you will be competing internationally.
01:46Where is the international competition and when is it?
01:49It's going to be in Kota Kinabalu this coming November 30.
01:52Malaysia.
01:53Yes.
01:54It's going to start on November 15 and then November 30.
01:58It's like a two-week competition.
02:01But talking about marine ecosystem,
02:04what do you think is the biggest threat to our marine ecosystem?
02:07It's really the pollution because it has impacts every part of the world.
02:11Land, air, sea.
02:13And I think each one of us has the role to play
02:17by reducing this impact by choosing recyclable materials,
02:21eco-friendly alternatives,
02:24and also reducing to purchase the products with microplastics.
02:28Because if it endangers the marine species,
02:31it also endangers the human.
02:33It's just like that.
02:34How we take care of ourselves,
02:36we also need to take care of our surroundings.
02:39Based on our studies,
02:41the fish we eat is also contaminated with plastic
02:45that can enter the human body.
02:47Now, your title is Miss Cuba Philippines.
02:50How does this help your advocacy?
02:53Actually, the platform of Miss Cuba Philippines
02:58gave me the visibility and large audience
03:04when it comes to promoting about the marine conservation.
03:07It really helps me a lot
03:09because we do a lot of activities.
03:12I had a level-up clean-up with farms.
03:15I had an international coastal clean-up.
03:18And with that, it's not just a clean-up.
03:22It also gave us a lot of lessons
03:24that we also need to really be responsible of our disposal.
03:28And also, we did mango planting in Puerto Galera.
03:31You know, I'm curious because they said
03:33when you're a diver,
03:35you see the biodiversity,
03:37the marine resources.
03:40How do you feel about that?
03:42Tell us about that experience.
03:43It's really different.
03:44Because when you're just on the shore or shallow,
03:47you're afraid because it's so dark underwater.
03:50But if you're there,
03:51it's like, wow, you're in a different world.
03:53You're like an astronaut.
03:54You're really like something
03:56that you're not in when you're on land.
04:00It's really different.
04:01It also relaxes your mind
04:03and it helps me a lot to circulate how I think.
04:08How long can you stay underwater?
04:10It depends on the use of the tank.
04:13But when it's shallow,
04:15we can do an hour.
04:17Especially when we're doing a clean-up
04:19because of the corals.
04:21But when it's a deep dive,
04:23we can reach 45 minutes or 30.
04:25It depends on how deep you are.
04:26Like 100 feet or something.
04:28Okay.
04:29For our fellow Filipinos to be aware,
04:32what are the things that you see under the garbage?
04:36Everything.
04:37Plastics, shampoos.
04:39When we did a beach clean-up,
04:41there were a lot of slippers.
04:43I was like,
04:45because I have other advocacies.
04:48I have an organization
04:49that gives slippers for kids,
04:51for street children.
04:52And when we did a beach clean-up
04:54in the farms,
04:55in the ICC,
04:56I was like,
04:57oh no.
04:58It's like you're dismayed.
04:59It's like you're dismayed.
05:00But then,
05:01with that kind of organization,
05:03they recycle those things.
05:04So we collect them
05:06and then we clean it up.
05:07They do it in a recycle thing.
05:12I don't really know how.
05:14But I'm trying to engage myself
05:16to educational campaigns like that.
05:18Okay, so you will be representing the Philippines.
05:20Yes.
05:21All the best.
05:22Please do invite our viewers
05:24to support you and your journey
05:25here in Miss Cuba.
05:27So Filipinas,
05:29Filipinas,
05:31support me
05:32in my Miss Cuba International Journey
05:34that's coming November 30
05:36at Kota Kinabalu.
05:38Good luck to you.
05:39Thank you, thank you so much.
05:40And advance congratulations.
05:43Bring home the international crown.
05:45I will do my best
05:46to get the second crown
05:48for Miss Cuba.
05:50Good luck and all the best.
05:52Go Miss Philippines.
05:53Yes, let's go.
05:54Thank you, Jane,
05:55for joining us.
05:56Thank you so much for having me.
05:57And all the best
05:58on your Miss Cuba International Journey.
