00:00It's a sacred morning for all of us because only recently, the winners of Miss Earth 2024 were announced.
00:08It was not only their beauty, but also their advocacy for the environment.
00:15And for that, we will be joined live here in the studio by Miss Earth Water 2024, Bea Milan-Wendorfsky,
00:23and the winner of Miss Earth 2024, Jessica Lane.
00:27Ladies, congratulations. Welcome to Rise and Shine, Filipinas.
00:31Thank you so much for having us.
00:34Thank you for gracing us today.
00:35Alright, how is it? How was the win?
00:38And did it sink in already that you won Miss Earth and Miss Earth Water?
00:42What was your reaction when the announcement was made?
00:46If ever, I was just super excited to be in the top four with Jessica.
00:51We actually have four crowns available up for grabs at Miss Earth.
00:55So that's four opportunities to have an international platform to make a real impact.
01:00And I'm so excited to work with Jessica because I know that we can advocate for real change.
01:06Jessica, you made history.
01:07This is the first time that Australia won the Miss Earth crown.
01:11How does it feel?
01:12That's right. It has started to sink in thanks to you amazing people.
01:16I think beforehand, it was really taking its time because as Olivia mentioned,
01:22we're both deep environmental advocates.
01:24We've been on this journey for sustainability our entire lives.
01:27So to be given the crown that final night and to be told that you will be a voice for the Earth for this entire year,
01:34it's such an honor and I'm truly so humbled.
01:37And I had my family and my national team supporting me in the front row.
01:42And when they called my name, there were tears.
01:44It was beautiful because Australia has come second three times and never come first.
01:50And this win brings home all four big pageant crowns for Australia.
01:54So it's making history and I'm so grateful for the organization.
01:57Congratulations for that.
01:58Right, Bea, you are half Filipina and half Polish, half American.
02:03Is that right?
02:04So you've been here in the Philippines several times.
02:06Yes. My mom is originally from Nueva Vizcaya,
02:10but my family has since kind of moved more to La Union in the Makati area.
02:15So it feels like a home away from home.
02:18And the Philippines is really where I developed my love for environmentalism.
02:23My Lola living in La Union, we love the ocean there.
02:26We love the surf. And I volunteer with a turtle sanctuary called Project Kerma.
02:32So they actually protect turtle hatchlings and make sure they properly make it to the ocean.
02:37Do you also love Ilocano food?
02:39Yes, I love the Mekpet.
02:42I love all of the flavors of the vegetables, how fresh Ilocano food is.
02:47So what are your plans after winning the title?
02:50So what will be your advocacy as your group, as your batch?
02:55So tell us about your plans.
02:57I think we both have quite a lot of plans.
02:59I think before the coronation, I knew that win or lose,
03:03I'd walk away with 76 new friends from across the world.
03:06And that was certainly the best prize of all.
03:08So I hope to go visit as many as I can and work in their countries on conservation efforts.
03:13Really, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
03:16So I hope to make this year a year of sustainability,
03:20a year of inspiring people to have that environmental love and passion.
03:24When I return to Australia, I'll be doing as much news broadcast as I can
03:28to get the message out there that beauty can be sustainable,
03:31to dress for tomorrow, which is my advocacy, promoting sustainable fashion.
03:36And I'll be working with local conservation groups to continue this journey.
03:40So your advocacy, as I understand, is dress for tomorrow.
03:43That's right, yes.
03:44It's highlighting that every person has the power to make a difference.
03:48If everyone shopped sustainably and stopped shopping fast fashion,
03:52we would reduce climate emissions by over 60%.
03:55This would be a massive difference for our beautiful Earth,
03:58and each of us has the power to make that difference.
04:00So I just believe that we all should make a difference
04:03and care about our Earth as much as we do.
04:06And that's what we're advocating for today.
04:07And you also understand that you are majoring in journalism and creative writing,
04:12so you're going to use that platform as well.
04:14Absolutely. My entire life, I've known my purpose,
04:17and that's to be a voice for the Earth.
04:19And I've been trying to find the right pathways and the right journeys
04:22to grow this platform and to inspire as many people as I can, hence journalism.
04:27And I aspire to be an environmental journalist.
04:30But thanks to Miss Earth, that circle of influence has grown so much.
04:33And I can't wait to explore this year and be inspired and inspire many others.
04:38Exciting.
04:39How about you, Bea?
04:39Are you, you know, making more visits here in the Philippines or staying here for good?
04:43What's your plan?
04:44Yeah, so my plan is to head back to the U.S. to claim my Filipino citizenship
04:49and actually move here in the next few months, probably April.
04:53I'm really passionate about climate displacement
04:56and the fact that climate change is intensifying natural disasters.
04:59We just experienced one of the worst typhoon seasons on record.
05:03So I'm really excited and passionate about coming here,
05:07trying to coordinate community engagement
05:11to make sure that we have robust resilience strategies for Filipinos.
05:16And I've always felt connected to the culture here.
05:19So it means the world to finally have an excuse to move here.
05:23Yeah, we are excited for you to be here for good.
05:27And also your advocacy is very timely and very relevant
05:30because recently we have been hit by several typhoons in our country.
05:35So I hope you could also partner with different government agencies.
05:39All right, some last few questions, ladies.
05:41To whom do you offer this win?
05:43Oh my goodness, there are so many people I have to thank.
05:46There really is. I'll start with my family.
05:48They're here today watching me.
05:49They've come all the way from Australia
05:51and they've just been my greatest support throughout this journey.
05:55They've always told me, I used to be a competitive swimmer,
05:57and they'd say, win, lose, anything.
06:00Our motto is leave it all in the pool.
06:02And I think that's what all of us did at the competition.
06:04We gave it our all. We gave it so much love and passion.
06:07So I have to thank them for their upbringing.
06:09But I also have an incredible team in Australia.
06:11My national director, Julieta, my manager, Hector, and my coach, RL.
06:16I couldn't have done this without them.
06:17As I mentioned, I've been an environmental advocate my entire life.
06:20But being a beauty queen is quite new to me.
06:23So I couldn't have done it without them.
06:25They must be very proud of you. All right.
06:28I would actually love to extend my thanks to the Filipino-American community
06:32and the Filipino diaspora.
06:34I was actually the first Phil-Am to ever represent the U.S. at Miss Earth.
06:39So there was so much support.
06:41I helped organize Phil-Am Fashion Week and was a part of that.
06:45So this was really a celebration of American culture,
06:49but also recognizing that regardless of when your parents
06:53or when your parents' parents came to this country,
06:55we're all part of one country.
06:58And I hope to bring that energy worldwide
07:00and help everyone recognize that we're all part of humanity.
07:03Very well. So, ladies, congratulations again.
07:06And all the best in your reign as Miss Earth and, of course, Miss Earth Water.
07:11Congratulations. Thank you so much.
