00:00:00I am joined by Robert Griffin III, James White, Field, Yates, Mina Kimes.
00:00:13All right, so first play we're going to look at, second and two, one of the Patriots' first
00:00:17offensive plays.
00:00:20Hello, what's going on everyone?
00:00:24Mike Cadillac, Taylor Kyles here for CLS Media, back with another episode of the Patriots
00:00:29Daily Podcast, powered by PrizePix and GameTime.
00:00:33We'll talk about them later.
00:00:34I'm sure some of you are carrying over from our trade deadline episode with John Zanis.
00:00:39We got rid of him.
00:00:40Now it's just me and Taylor, ready to talk some football.
00:00:42We're going to break down Patriots versus Titans.
00:00:49Patriots lose 20-17 in overtime in a loss to Tennessee on Sunday, now sitting at 2-7.
00:00:56The trade deadline is now over, and the Patriots didn't really do anything, Taylor.
00:01:03They got rid of Josh Uche for a six-round pick a couple of days ago.
00:01:08According to Diane Rossini, they were receiving calls on Devon Godshaw, Kedrick Bourne, K.J.
00:01:13Osborne, and Kyle Duggar.
00:01:15Turns out they didn't trade any of them, so they're moving forward, going to continue
00:01:18to build this thing from the ground up, and we'll see where that ultimately goes.
00:01:22But like I said, there was a game on Sunday, so what we're going to do is look at some
00:01:26film, look at a couple different things from the Patriots' loss to the Titans, see what
00:01:31they can do, what they can improve, and go sort of, we're going to take it by storyline.
00:01:35So we're going to talk about the Patriots' run defense, we're going to talk about the
00:01:37Patriots' run offense, we're going to talk about Christian Gonzalez and his matchup against
00:01:41Calvin Ridley, we'll touch on some coaching stuff as far as offensive line decisions,
00:01:47going for two, some play calling things around Drake May, and then we'll finish with some
00:01:52Drake May.
00:01:53Some good, some bad from the Rookies' start on Sunday.
00:01:57But Taylor, before we get into it, I did not cover the game as much as I could have, some
00:02:03family things going on, so I'm relying on you to tell us more so about Patriots' Titans.
00:02:08So after watching the film, after checking it out, before we get into the nitty gritty,
00:02:13some overarching thoughts from this game after you looked at it a second time.
00:02:17I mean, it was pretty similar to what we saw live.
00:02:20There weren't honestly a whole lot of surprises in the film.
00:02:23I'll say the run defense, I feel like when it comes to the run game period, if you have
00:02:28like a handful of bad plays, it makes it seem like everything was terrible.
00:02:32When I went back and watched the run defense specifically, one thing I noticed was they
00:02:34gave up a couple of, or a few explosive runs.
00:02:37Most of those were actually at like Marte Mapu and Del Pettis in spots where we typically
00:02:41see Kyle Dugger and Jabril Peppers, which is like, oh, two young players who are particularly,
00:02:46you know, very big or physical.
00:02:48Like mentally, I think they play at times with a physical, you know, kind of a mentality
00:02:53period, but they just don't have the size and power to back it up on a consistent basis.
00:02:57And that's kind of what you saw, especially with recognition.
00:03:00There were a couple of times where Del Pettis like took a while to realize what was going
00:03:03on.
00:03:04I think part of that is Dietrich Weiss actually mentioned while speaking to reporters that
00:03:07they need to be better about recognizing formations.
00:03:10That doesn't just go for the safeties, it goes for everybody.
00:03:13That was one thing I noticed on the explosive runs.
00:03:15We talked about, a lot of the predictions we actually had came true because we talked
00:03:18about the toss play wasn't the same toss play as the Jets, but a lot of the issues the Patriots
00:03:22had were on runs that went to the outside and force guys like defensive backs to make
00:03:27tackles.
00:03:28And then when things really got bad was in overtime.
00:03:32Now they were like giving up some yards throughout the game.
00:03:34And honestly, like with the guys they have, I know I'm not trying to make an excuse.
00:03:38I'm just trying to be realistic.
00:03:39Like Daniel Laquale is not meant to play as many snaps as he does.
00:03:42I like what we've seen from Jaqueline Roy, I don't really want to, I think he's actually
00:03:46been solid.
00:03:47Like Christian Ellis, there were times where like he vacated his gap.
00:03:49I think Jelani Tobias has been better overall.
00:03:52Keon White is like showing signs of progress and has those flashes of, oh, he's not just
00:03:56a situational pass rusher who's being forced to play on early downs.
00:03:59He can do it.
00:04:00It's just sometimes the technique and the awareness is a little bit off.
00:04:03But it's like in other years, we had so many guys that were good.
00:04:06They kind of made up for when the other guy wasn't doing that well.
00:04:09Now I just don't think they have enough of those real gamers up front right now.
00:04:13And then they get exposed.
00:04:14But again, once they got to overtime was when they started getting gashed, like run after
00:04:18run.
00:04:19Defensive linemen were getting moved, especially on the interior.
00:04:21Like I mentioned, there were like three runs where Christian Ellis was in his gap, then
00:04:25went somewhere else.
00:04:26And the guy went exactly to the spot that he vacated.
00:04:29Inexperienced player on the defensive side of the ball.
00:04:32He played a little bit in Philly, but really in this system, it's still new to him.
00:04:35So I don't want to pile on.
00:04:36But that was really my biggest thing.
00:04:38Even looking back at their season long stats, the run defense hasn't been terrible.
00:04:42Actually, when you look at all the first three quarters of the game, they're like average.
00:04:46I think they're like right dead middle of the pack.
00:04:48When you get to the fourth quarter and overtime, that's when they get like bottom 10 ranking.
00:04:53So you'd like them to be like they were last year, where they're the best run defense and
00:04:57it's really not that much of a conversation.
00:04:59But you got no Bentley, no Duggar, no Peppers, no Barmore, I'm sorry.
00:05:05Those things matter.
00:05:06And I think we're just seeing that.
00:05:08When you don't have leads, when you are the team that's getting run on the third most
00:05:11in the NFL, two other teams have been adding more run defense snaps than the Patriots.
00:05:16We talk about it all the time.
00:05:18The run game is about body blows.
00:05:19If you're just getting punched in the stomach for four quarters straight, it's going to
00:05:23be real tough in overtime.
00:05:24I think it had 60 snaps going into that part of the game, which is why you could argue
00:05:28they probably should have gone for two.
00:05:29I would have liked to see them do that.
00:05:31Let's go.
00:05:32I can't wait to talk about that in the coaching then.
00:05:33I'll save that one.
00:05:34I'll save that one.
00:05:35My biggest thing that kind of surprised me was the run defense wasn't horrendous.
00:05:40They were inconsistent maybe for the game, although I think they did well for the most
00:05:44part, just a few chunks.
00:05:45But then it just got real bad as the game went on, again, outside of regular.
00:05:50Do we have specific film on the run D for today?
00:05:54We don't, but I do have it on Twitter, so I can still pull them up.
00:05:57No, that's okay.
00:05:58I just wanted to make sure before we move on, because that was sort of one of our things.
00:06:01But I like just that was a, I guess the way we can touch on the run defense then is just,
00:06:05I mean, look, Paul or Paula goes for 28 carries, 128 yards for four and a half, just over four
00:06:13and a half a carry.
00:06:14He's on schedule team as a whole 4.3 yards per carry 39 for 167 yards.
00:06:20So they're just not getting it done against the run.
00:06:22And I like there is obviously other ways to look at it where, you know, you go through
00:06:27overtime and it gets, it gets a lot worse in overtime.
00:06:30And again, yeah, he, he'd kind of just, it wasn't so much, I don't think explosive runs
00:06:35as much as it was kind of just chunk by chunk, five yards, three yards.
00:06:41But it's like, well, you're on schedule.
00:06:43And at this point in the game, if you're a good running offense and you're in overtime,
00:06:46you should just run the ball because most defenses are going to be tired just naturally
00:06:50by the flow of the game.
00:06:52And also I want to tip my hat to Tony Pollard.
00:06:54I don't think I gave him enough credit.
00:06:55That dude had some runs where he, there was one jump cut.
00:06:58He had more, he made the bug got y'all slip.
00:07:00Like it was really good.
00:07:01There were also times you'll see here where he'll kind of look like he's going in one
00:07:04gap to defensive lineman as a two gapper tries to get in that gap.
00:07:08And he makes a really nice right there to exploit a gap.
00:07:11So you got to tip your cap to Pollard and that's the tough part about playing really
00:07:14good running backs.
00:07:15When you don't have those playmakers on the defensive line and in the defensive front,
00:07:19because you don't have enough guys to make up for the fact that this guy's talented and
00:07:23is going to make some guys miss.
00:07:24Again, I know this isn't necessarily run defense specific, but we mentioned the injuries and
00:07:28guys like Kyle Duggar being out, obviously chip roll peppers, not with the team.
00:07:31They haven't been great against tight ends anyway, but this year, but then they let the
00:07:35tight ends go for six catches for 83 yards and a touchdown and allow them to be productive
00:07:39against this as well.
00:07:40So the injuries are going to continue to kill them.
00:07:42This is the still run.
00:07:43Rundy.
00:07:44Okay.
00:07:45Yeah.
00:07:46Oh yeah.
00:07:47That's awesome.
00:07:48All the times that they were.
00:07:49So in kind of just to break this down very quickly.
00:07:50Yeah.
00:07:51So a lot of times when they're playing full defense against teams that use a lot of RPOs,
00:07:54they use what's called a tight front, which is basically their way of keeping too long.
00:07:57We talked about a little bit, but two linebackers at the second level, and it looks like they're
00:08:01five down front, but as you can see, instead of a linebacker, they'll put a safety.
00:08:05And when you have that safety and it's Duggar peppers, you're saying, okay, if it's a screen,
00:08:09they're going to blow it up.
00:08:10And if it's a run, they're going to recognize it quickly and probably bring it down just
00:08:14as quickly.
00:08:15But it's not the same when it's Mop who in Del Pettis, because they haven't seen this
00:08:18stuff quite as often.
00:08:19It's going to be tougher and they just don't have the physicality to take on those blocks
00:08:23where it's like, I'm going to get in your chest and shed you.
00:08:25They typically try to get under or around blocks in that sometimes puts them in some
00:08:29difficult positions.
00:08:30Yeah, for sure.
00:08:31So yeah, Patriots allow 167 yards on the ground for 39 carries.
00:08:36Like you said, on schedule 4.3 yards of carry, that's a can't allow teams to do that because
00:08:41then they're just going to get first downs on first downs on it.
00:08:43And you go into overtime, you get gashed, you end up losing the game.
00:08:46Let's go to that running offense now from the Patriots that look outside of Drake Bay,
00:08:52who has eight carries for 95 yards on zero design runs.
00:08:56They were abysmal 15 carry or 15 yards on 12 carries, getting just over one yard per
00:09:02carry Taylor outside of Drake Bay.
00:09:05Drodd Mayo didn't want to talk too much about it.
00:09:07He really only said it starts up front.
00:09:10Ben Brown Laden Robinson, not great in this game.
00:09:12Laden Robinson actually gets benched for Mike on one who we're going to talk more about
00:09:17that in the coaching decisions with the offensive line and matching up against Jeffrey Simmons
00:09:21inside and all that.
00:09:22But Taylor quickly, well, not quickly go on a diatribe.
00:09:25What do you got on this run offense?
00:09:27What the heck is wrong with it?
00:09:28Because man, 1.25 yards per carry outside of quarterbacks on non-design runs is chaos.
00:09:35Like you got to be better.
00:09:36You just got to be, you got to run the football.
00:09:37This is what you're on.
00:09:38Mayo talked about being a soft football team when you can't run the football.
00:09:42This is not tough football.
00:09:44It's not.
00:09:45I treated like it was a whole lot of bad.
00:09:47The Patriots, since Drake may became the starter, their running backs have earned 123% of their
00:09:53yards after contact.
00:09:56No other team even hit 90%.
00:09:58No other team has hit 90% since then.
00:10:00That's egregious.
00:10:01Now, you know, every once in a while, it feels like a back probably didn't hit the right
00:10:05hole.
00:10:06Like with Gibson, that's been an issue.
00:10:07Sometimes, sometimes you're Michael Hastie can get dancy.
00:10:09There have been a couple of times where I know like Ramondry tried to bounce one run
00:10:12to the left on a play where Darian Lowe and Michael Jordan had trouble passing something
00:10:17off.
00:10:18But he had a wide open lane to the right where it looked like they were trying to cut back
00:10:21to.
00:10:22But with Ramondry, it's kind of like a quarterback with, you know, a veteran where you're saying
00:10:25most of the time, I'm going to assume you did the right thing unless it's just so bad
00:10:29that it's undeniable.
00:10:30But yeah, the offensive line, it's not even just one problem.
00:10:34Like one of the things that I really liked was at some points this year, the left side
00:10:38was pretty good at outside zone.
00:10:39The right honestly outside zone has been their best concept.
00:10:43And I think a lot of that is because it's been the thing they've repped the most, but
00:10:45you're getting to the point now where like Ben Brown is starting to get exposed a little
00:10:49bit more.
00:10:50Michael Jordan, I feel like has really taken a step back.
00:10:52Like he and Darian Lowe are not passing things off well.
00:10:55Their combo blocks aren't very effective.
00:10:57Mike and when he wound up on the ground a couple of times, one time I think he got tripped
00:11:00up, but even him, like what you expect from him, it wasn't as consistent as you like did
00:11:05open some room.
00:11:06But then like, this is why it's everything because the combos aren't very good.
00:11:10You have individual losses for the umpteenth week in a row.
00:11:13You've got second level defenders that aren't getting blocked.
00:11:15So running backs can't even get ahead of steam going.
00:11:18And it's a frustrating conversation.
00:11:19I was like, literally, I'm sitting in the airport watching this with Liz and I put my
00:11:22laptop down and I'm just like, it's also bad.
00:11:25It's not, it's not a one.
00:11:26It's not like, Oh, just plug this guy in.
00:11:28And actually, I think the reason that Lady Robinson started was because they wanted to
00:11:32run the ball because we know that he's been one of the few areas where he has had success
00:11:37is as a run blocker next to him when you, but whether it's not playing a ton, it's
00:11:41the injuries or whatever he's regressed.
00:11:43And now he's got to the point where almost every rep, it looked like he wasn't doing
00:11:47something right.
00:11:48Whether he was over setting his hands weren't in the right place.
00:11:50It looked like sometimes he wasn't blocking the right person at the second level.
00:11:53Not totally sure on that one, but I know there was one play where he looked surprised and
00:11:56kind of looked around and didn't end up blocking anybody.
00:11:59So I don't know if they need more window dressing, which is something they don't really have
00:12:03a ton of.
00:12:04You know, in those fullback sets, they try to have some misdirection where they'll look
00:12:08like they're tossing and wind back, but it's not really surprising anybody.
00:12:12So I don't know if maybe they need to do things schematically to take something off the run
00:12:16game.
00:12:17But at the end of the day, the offensive line does need to block and they're not doing that.
00:12:20And I don't know how you fix it when it's a line that's full of guys who would be practice
00:12:23squatters or like true backups, not even spot starters, but backups on most teams.
00:12:28And you're relying on all these inexperienced players without the talent to be going up
00:12:32against guys like Jeffrey Simmons and Quinn Williams and all these talented edge or defensive
00:12:37linemen that they do face.
00:12:39So yeah, I mean, you see it.
00:12:40It's not good.
00:12:41It's it's it's it's just it's poor execution.
00:12:44And I don't know what the solution is at this point, unless maybe Caden Wallace and Cole
00:12:48Strange get back in the lineup, because it's just nothing about this run game gives me
00:12:53hope.
00:12:54There were times where I had some, but they were inconsistent.
00:12:56Now I'm at the point where I'm just going in the games, expecting them not to be able
00:12:58to run, which is a terrifying position to be in when you have a rookie quarterback.
00:13:03And Alex Van Pelt, who's getting all this shit because I was running the ball too much.
00:13:07They actually outside of the first quarter are running the ball at a bottom two rate
00:13:11in the NFL.
00:13:12Like they're not they're trying to get away from it, especially because they're in these
00:13:15deficits and everything.
00:13:16But you also don't want your quarterback to have to drop back 50 times a game because
00:13:20that increases his risk of getting hit and exposes your offensive line even more.
00:13:23Like they're just in a tough spot and there's really no way to get around it.
00:13:26I'd love to see some improvement and maybe guys, the light bulb goes off.
00:13:29I'm just not confident that's going to happen.
00:13:31That's kind of what it is here, Taylor.
00:13:32It's that light bulb moment for them where it's like all of a sudden, maybe things just
00:13:35start to click and you start to run the ball better.
00:13:37But with all the changeover that happened, that's had that's happened on the line, even
00:13:42since we wanted to, where they actually running the ball pretty efficiently, really like you
00:13:45said to.
00:13:46And we had that chart up, I think last week of the week before, ever since they turned
00:13:50it over to Drake May, the rushing offense has just been abysmal and it's not.
00:13:54It's not obviously Drake's may Drake May's fault.
00:13:56I mean, right now he's probably their best player.
00:13:58I will say definitively he's their best player on offense and yet nothing's getting done.
00:14:03And so look, it, it may be, and it's also, there's been some injuries, right?
00:14:08We talk about Caden Wallace who could come back and maybe, you know, play a, play a decent
00:14:13or do a decent job at, at right tackle, maybe some left tackle, but I think they're going
00:14:17to keep it there and low there.
00:14:18I think he's been okay.
00:14:19But then you have a Cole strange potentially can come back.
00:14:22But other than that, it's really, everything just sort of starts to click and maybe Scott
00:14:28Peters can get them back, you know, all on the same page and running the, running the
00:14:31football better, but it's going to start up front.
00:14:33And right now it's just not getting done again.
00:14:36They go for only 15 yards on 12 carries outside of Drake May.
00:14:40So I also got to save a Darian low.
00:14:42I have to acknowledge he also had a pretty bad mental error.
00:14:45It looked like where he and Hunter ended up blocking the same person after the play Hunter
00:14:49was looking at him like, what are you doing?
00:14:51And he had some losses where I wasn't sure if it was more on him or Michael Jordan necessarily,
00:14:55but like something wasn't right there.
00:14:57And I, as much as I've been, you know, hyping Darian low up and pro low college, we're very
00:15:02pro low, but more in past pro because the run game has not been great for him the past
00:15:08few weeks.
00:15:09And I do have to acknowledge that and be as fair as possible.
00:15:11A hundred percent.
00:15:12You do.
00:15:13And it's, it's a thing where I think, you know, some people haven't been fair to these
00:15:16guys, but at the same time, we're not sitting here talking about an all-star and all pro
00:15:21offensive line.
00:15:22It's replacement level guys who at times play really well.
00:15:25You talk about a city, so a laden Robinson of an area and low Ben Brown even has some
00:15:30flashes over the last couple of weeks, but then he comes back to earth because that's
00:15:33just who he is.
00:15:34It's, it's a guy who the Patriots were able to get essentially off the scrap heap, just
00:15:38like they do with, I think it's, is it Tyrone Robinson or the guy that they, Tyrese Robinson
00:15:44was a top 10 pass protecting guard in the preseason.
00:15:47Okay.
00:15:48So the past two seasons, three seasons, huge caveat, he's a practice squad guy.
00:15:52Another person you don't really want to have to play, but you know, honestly, relative
00:15:57to what you expect, they're in season acquisitions of Lyman has been pretty solid.
00:16:00I know Zach Thomas was cut.
00:16:03Maybe they just like, that was one thing I know people were saying, Oh, do you put Zach
00:16:05Thomas in the lineup?
00:16:06I just didn't like his strength.
00:16:08I didn't think functionally he was strong enough to really, especially hold up at guard
00:16:11or do anything that Michael Jordan wasn't already doing for you as someone who's had
00:16:15time in the system.
00:16:16So, you know, it's just tough.
00:16:18They're in a tough, they're in a really difficult position.
00:16:20I don't know if that turns into next year.
00:16:22Like you just bring in a veteran, like, you know, the commander sit with Nick Aligretti
00:16:26where you don't take the chance.
00:16:27You say, all right, maybe this guy is, you know, a lower end starter, but we know that
00:16:31he can do it at the very least, you know, but we'll, we'll see it's, it's, it's, it's
00:16:36so it's, it's frustrating because I don't have an answer.
00:16:39And I feel like I just keep talking to myself in circles, but yeah, it's, it's not good.
00:16:42It's not good.
00:16:43They need to improve whether it's this year, whether it's next year.
00:16:45I mean, things, things have to change up front.
00:16:46You get some guys healthy and make some acquisitions, but I mean, again, I keep saying it, but I
00:16:51harp on it when you run for just over a yard per carry outside of your quarterback, who
00:16:55isn't running the football or they're not designed runs, rather it's him scrambling.
00:17:00That's not a good recipe to win football games.
00:17:02So we're going to get to a little bit of Christian Gonzalez and Calvin Ridley.
00:17:05We'll talk about some coaching stuff and then we will end with Drake Bay.
00:17:08But before we do quick word from our friends over at price picks, because price picks is

00:18:28All right, Taylor, let's talk about Gonzo.
00:18:31We talked about it in our trade deadline show.
00:18:32The Patriots have two guys, Drake May on offense and Christian Gonzalez on defense, who are
00:18:37essentially the cornerstones of this football team.
00:18:40Gonzalez shadows Christian, excuse me, shadows Calvin Ridley for I believe most of the game.
00:18:46Do I have that right?
00:18:47Again, I wasn't able to watch the entirety of it, but I only noticed like a couple where
00:18:50he wasn't, but it looked like that was his guy.
00:18:52Yeah.
00:18:53And in that matchup allows Ridley to get three catches for 51 yards.
00:18:57No touchdowns.
00:18:58Ridley beat him a few times.
00:18:59Gonzo got him a few times.
00:19:00It was a heavyweight fight.
00:19:02Two guys.
00:19:03He also had two pass breakups as well.
00:19:06So I think another good test for Christian Gonzalez, I mean, it's not going to be perfect.
00:19:10It's not always like even, you know, Richard Sherman in his prime and Darrell Rivas in
00:19:14his prime.
00:19:15Like, you know, you lose a rep here, you lose a rep there.
00:19:17But I thought overall Christian Gonzalez has another pretty good game against one of the
00:19:20NFL's better wide receivers.
00:19:22What did you think of the matchup for him against Calvin Ridley on Sunday?
00:19:25I thought it was good.
00:19:26The only times he really gave up catches were on in breakers where sometimes I don't know
00:19:31if there was an underneath guy and he was supposed to have more help.
00:19:34Like when you're an outside corner and someone's running a dig on you and you're in zone coverage
00:19:38or off coverage, you know, unless you literally sit on the route, it can be tough to affect
00:19:42those plays.
00:19:43That was really all I saw.
00:19:44Like he deflected a deep ball, he was tight in coverage for the most part.
00:19:47I don't have a ton to say about the matchup, honestly, because I thought like Calvin Ridley
00:19:50was fine.
00:19:51But I know like PFF had him as one of their lowest graded defensive players.
00:19:56And I have a ton of respect for PFF.
00:19:58I think it's very important to understand how their grades work.
00:20:02Because like, yeah, if you give up a chunk play, it may not be necessarily on you.
00:20:06But a lot of those times, if it is like a route over the middle, and they just see a
00:20:10cornerback in the area, they're going to put it on him and not necessarily someone over
00:20:13the middle.
00:20:14That's just what it is.
00:20:15But yeah, it's one of those examples where it's like, you gotta do your own research
00:20:19if you're going to look into PFF grades.
00:20:21Don't just go on that because I think he got like a 53 or something, and he did not have
00:20:25a 53 performance.
00:20:26I thought he was fine.
00:20:27No, I thought so too.
00:20:28And I think that from the reps that I was able to see, I saw you mentioned a couple
00:20:31both of the past breakups, one of them was, you know, deeper down the side on the other,
00:20:35the play across the middle, right, where that's really going to tank your PFF grade
00:20:39when you let him get there, catch the ball, and then run for however long.
00:20:42I think it was 20, 20-ish yard gain.
00:20:44And so yeah, you're sort of shoving him into the middle and trying to get some help on
00:20:49the coverage because you're just playing your role out there on the outside.
00:20:52And you're technically in coverage, Ridley goes, and then that's going to tank your grade.
00:20:55But no, I thought he was solid overall as well.
00:20:58So I did just want to hit on that because it was one of our, you know, one of the things
00:21:03you're looking for.
00:21:04You know, we played Patriots, Calvin Ridley last year.
00:21:06That was, you know, that potentially became a thing until it wasn't.
00:21:09And then Christian Gonzalez matching up on that number one guy, but three catches for
00:21:1351 yards for Ridley on six targets, two of those past breakups.
00:21:17I know it's not, it's really not.
00:21:21Ridley went, Ridley had some other, some other gains, but they weren't against Christian
00:21:25Gonzalez.
00:21:26I would say overall Gonzo did his job against Ridley on Sunday for sure.
00:21:29So again, just wanted to hit on that.
00:21:31I do also want to hit on those coaching things before we dive in deeper to Drake May.
00:21:36First and foremost, it's the offensive line against Jeffrey Simmons up front.
00:21:40They start the left side per usual, Vidarian low Michael Jordan, Ben Brown.
00:21:47And then they start Leighton Robinson at right guard and they start Mike on when you add
00:21:50right tackle.
00:21:51It doesn't go well.
00:21:52So in the middle of the game, eventually in Robinson, they kick on when you inside and
00:21:56they put trade Jacobs back on the right tackle.
00:21:59I want to get your thoughts on that overall.
00:22:01Cause we, we talked about Jeffrey Simmons being, being the game wrecker in this, in
00:22:06this, in this contest, he's probably Tennessee's best player.
00:22:10And they knew all week that they were going to have to deal with him.
00:22:13And what did they do?
00:22:14They played Leighton Robinson, a rookie on the inside.
00:22:17And then in the middle, when it was, you know, shit was hitting the fan, it's like, Oh, maybe
00:22:20we should put our best offensive lineman on him on the inside.
00:22:23So like maybe just start the game with that.
00:22:25I don't know.
00:22:26It's, it sounds so silly, but it's, I didn't understand it at all.
00:22:30I don't know if you have a different opinion.
00:22:31I don't know if you have the same opinion, Taylor, but I want to get your thoughts on
00:22:34that because it didn't make a lot of sense to me.
00:22:36They should have just started, especially because you're toying with the offensive line
00:22:39again, right?
00:22:40The eight offensive line combinations and nine games now, everybody from the last game
00:22:45was healthy.
00:22:46It could have moved or two games ago.
00:22:47You could have moved or maybe it was last game anyway, you could have moved right into
00:22:51it.
00:22:52And instead you switch it up again and use a different combination.
00:22:54I didn't like it, but I want to get your thoughts on it too.
00:22:57It wasn't even so much the continuity issue for me because I, I think DeMontre was actually
00:23:03pretty solid overall.
00:23:05Again, this is all relative to what you expect from the player, but at the same time, my
00:23:09bigger issue was like, I saw it in practice that it was like Leighton Robinson, Mike and
00:23:13when he, then it was DeMontre Jacobs next to him when he, so I'm thinking, I don't know
00:23:18what this means.
00:23:19I don't want to necessarily report this because we know they go through all these funky combinations.
00:23:23Sometimes it can be very difficult to understand why they have the patterns they have, especially
00:23:28it feels like the past few weeks or like the month and a half that sometimes they're kind
00:23:31of random.
00:23:33But when I saw that, I remember I was like, I really hope they're not putting Leighton
00:23:37Robinson in against Jeffrey Simmons.
00:23:39When you spent all week talking about what a game record he is like, that sounds more
00:23:43like a Mike and what kind of situation to me.
00:23:46But then when it happened, I'm thinking, okay, I guess they're going to run the ball and
00:23:50I have a feeling this was supposed to be a run heavy plan because the Titans defense
00:23:53is good.
00:23:54Period.
00:23:55Like there wasn't any really great area for them to attack.
00:23:57As we saw, like Drake may didn't have a whole lot of success going down field.
00:24:00They forced him to throw underneath and beat them by scrambling and running the ball.
00:24:04Cause then you'll see it in the film review.
00:24:07They did a great job getting depth in their zones.
00:24:09Like this is like the best jets defenses that we've seen where really you need to dink and
00:24:14dunk them because they're just, they're very well coached.
00:24:16They pass off routes brilliantly.
00:24:18You can tell how well prepared they are.
00:24:20I honestly kind of got jealous watching it.
00:24:22The Patriots, I'm not going to act like they don't really do those things.
00:24:24They definitely do.
00:24:25It's not as consistent though.
00:24:27And I think part of that is the coaching change and you know, some roster shuffling and all
00:24:30that kind of thing.
00:24:31But Titans are really good.
00:24:32And I, I would assume their plan going in was we cannot have Drake be the only thing
00:24:37that we do well in this game.
00:24:38And by putting Lady Robinson in, I guess their thinking was at least we can maybe run the
00:24:42ball better than if we had in when you and Demontre Jacobs.
00:24:45I still don't like that reasoning though.
00:24:47I'll be totally honest with you.
00:24:49I disagreed with it at the time.
00:24:51Uh, I, I didn't like it in the game when they made the change.
00:24:54I was like, yes, finally.
00:24:55Because you know, we love late and late in his work.
00:24:57He's great with us.
00:24:58You can tell he works hard.
00:25:00Coaches rave about him.
00:25:01We're rooting for him.
00:25:02But I mean, he was getting worked by Jeffrey Simmons.
00:25:04It seemed like everything he was doing at some point was wrong when he was in the game.
00:25:09And I don't say that to like, you know, he's Barry, the guy, he's a rookie who was bad.
00:25:13They needed to make that switch.
00:25:14But yeah, long story short.
00:25:16I figure they just wanted a better ground attack and that was the reason for putting
00:25:20Leighton in.
00:25:21I still highly disagree with it because of the number of times he ended up having to
00:25:24block Jeffrey Simmons and was just completely overmatched.
00:25:26All right.
00:25:27Another thing on the coaching that I want to talk about is the decision to go for two.
00:25:32And I want to go first here.
00:25:33Patriots obviously tie the game, uh, or they attempt to tie the game.
00:25:37Drake may makes that incredible play down at the goal line, running around for 12 seconds.
00:25:41Ridiculous.
00:25:42And we'll get into that.
00:25:43Yeah.
00:25:44And I'm going to break it down because that kid, you know, he is, he's their best player
00:25:47on offense.
00:25:48He's their most important player on the entire team.
00:25:50Uh, and he goes down and he makes it 1716.
00:25:54And look, I get that they were gassed like Drake may, he was asked about it.
00:25:58He was basically like, I was just trying to catch my breath.
00:26:00I wasn't even thinking about going for two, but I also look at the situation where you
00:26:05only scored 17 points and you weren't able to, um, go through that Tennessee defense
00:26:10all day and get points on the board.
00:26:12Yeah.
00:26:13So your defense was, um, you know, more well prepared, not well prepared.
00:26:16Your defense was rested, right?
00:26:17They hadn't been on the field.
00:26:18So you, you have a healthy D a ready to go defense, um, against them in overtime, if
00:26:24you tie it.
00:26:25But man, I just think that when you go down there and you can't score, uh, uh, at will
00:26:31and you have an opportunity to win the game right then and there, you drop your best two
00:26:34point play.
00:26:35Gerard mentioned the, uh, the, the two point play against the Jaguars that didn't work,
00:26:39but they executed it aside from Jalen Pope.
00:26:42Just tripped.
00:26:43And I don't think they would call that same play, but you got to have two point plays
00:26:46ready.
00:26:47And I am in fully of the mindset when you are two and seven or two and six and you can
00:26:52fall the two and seven, Oh, well, right.
00:26:55You're down there, make the play.
00:26:57And if you don't, it's okay.
00:26:58Because you just saw what Drake may did.
00:27:00You still have all these, um, not all of these, but you still have him as a building block
00:27:03and you still have the confidence in that guy.
00:27:07And he, you know, he showed you what he is, but I just, I had no, I had no reason for
00:27:12them to, to take it to overtime and try and win it again because they were gashing you
00:27:15on the ground too.
00:27:16And that's exactly how they want it in overtime.
00:27:18So I'm of the, again, of the mindset of go win it now.
00:27:21And everyone was talking about the Buccaneers game Taylor last night.
00:27:23I don't know if you watched it, um, where that was stupid.
00:27:27That was actually very, I don't know if they should have gone for two, though.
00:27:30It's a Tom Brady dilemma.
00:27:32If you have a chance to beat Tom Brady, you beat Tom Brady.
00:27:35Don't do that.
00:27:36Plain stare.
00:27:37Bullshit.
00:27:38It makes me dude.
00:27:39I was, I, you know, I like giving coaches some benefit of the doubt.
00:27:42I try to like see both sides just to be fair.
00:27:45I was saying the entire drive, go for two.
00:27:47If you don't, they're going to make you pay.
00:27:49I don't care if you get the ball first and then Mahomes gets it and walks down the field
00:27:53and Kareem Hunt was killing.
00:27:55So this is different.
00:27:56So, okay.
00:27:57We'll compare the situations.
00:27:58Actually, the Patriots, these were some of the last drives.
00:28:00So in the second half, they started, they allowed a field goal on a 14 play drive.
00:28:04Then it was five plays punt five plays because the Patriots fumbled touchdown.
00:28:08Okay.
00:28:09You put your defense in a tough spot.
00:28:11Still could have executed better.
00:28:12But then the last possession regulation for the Patriots was a three and out.
00:28:16They got forced to punt.
00:28:17And that was when Drake may drove the ball down the field.
00:28:20That's not the same as the chiefs and Kareem Hunt ripping off like 10 yard runs on you.
00:28:25That's not what was happening with the Patriots.
00:28:27It was those body blows where it's like, all right, if you want to commit to the run, whatever,
00:28:31I still would have liked him to go for two in that situation because I didn't like the
00:28:35idea of being able to run the ball for the Titans if they got the ball back.
00:28:39But also like, ah, maybe Mason Rudolph makes a mistake.
00:28:41We saw they fumbled.
00:28:42So like you were kind of waiting and hoping the Titans were going to make a mistake and
00:28:46give you an opportunity.
00:28:48But with the chiefs, it was very different.
00:28:50One it's Patrick Mahomes and you're actually getting like killed on the ground and cannot
00:28:54stop it.
00:28:55Two different situations.
00:28:56In my opinion, where like the Patriots, when I think is somewhat debatable, everyone knows
00:29:01when you play a Mahomes or a Josh Allen or Tom Brady, you need to stick the knife in
00:29:06them.
00:29:07When you have a chance.
00:29:09What was my mind that this is still happening against these quarterbacks?
00:29:12Like I, Oh my God, when I saw you tweet that I was so mad.
00:29:15I actually, you should have charged me traveling all day.
00:29:19I love Mike.
00:29:20Let me put the phone down.
00:29:21I was so mad.
00:29:22Oh, that's okay.
00:29:23We're allowed to disagree.
00:29:24That's what this, that's what we agree to.
00:29:26We agree way too much on this show, Taylor.
00:29:28So let's, let's disagree here because in, you know, when I look at it, I'm like, okay,
00:29:33the Patriots are two and six.
00:29:34They got nothing to lose.
00:29:36So go for two and win it.
00:29:37And if you lose, who cares?
00:29:39May still got you down there.
00:29:40You still have him in your back pocket and you're going to be just fine.
00:29:43When you're the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at four and four, you just lose your two best receivers
00:29:48the last couple of weeks.
00:29:49You're on the fringe of the playoffs.
00:29:50It's like, you can't just keep, Hey, well we lost, Oh, well let's, let's be a little
00:29:56bit more conservative here.
00:29:57We got down here.
00:29:58We can, yeah, we're four and four like going conservative against Andy Reed and Patrick
00:30:03Mahomes.
00:30:05So like, I'm sorry, I understand the, okay.
00:30:09It's Patrick Mahomes and yeah.
00:30:10Kill him while he's down.
00:30:11Like I, I do understand that concept, but if you then go and try and try and win the
00:30:15game and you lose and you throw that game winning drive for that game time drive away
00:30:19from Baker Mayfield because you got too aggressive and now you're four and five and two weeks
00:30:23ago, Baker Mayfield, look, he was going to be the MVP.
00:30:26And now all of a sudden you're four and five because, well, yeah, you lose your two receivers,
00:30:29but also because you tried to go for two when you could have just gave, saved yourself,
00:30:33went to overtime and give yourself a, continue to give yourself a chance to win the football
00:30:37game and stay alive in the playoffs.
00:30:38So that's why I, that's my thought on it.
00:30:41I still agree with it, but I can get receivers.
00:30:43You wanted them to go all the way down the field rather than try to score two yards away
00:30:48from the goal line as a team with no receivers, it's not like they were running the ball that
00:30:53well either.
00:30:54Like at least the cats had Drake main, you're thinking, okay, if they get the ball back,
00:30:57maybe Drake can make magic.
00:30:58And he almost did.
00:30:59If he puts more air on that ball, Drake may win that game.
00:31:03Yep.
00:31:04So again, like I'm thinking these are different situations where Baker, like that, they were
00:31:07really having a hard time moving the ball.
00:31:09I'm sorry.
00:31:10I keep cutting you off, but like, I'm like, I'm, I'm not even mad at you.
00:31:15I'm mad at Todd Bowles because you knew he wasn't going to go for two.
00:31:18Yeah.
00:31:19He's like, well, yeah, we gave like a brief thought to it.
00:31:21Shut up, bro.
00:31:22I'm sorry.
00:31:23Get out of here with that bullshit.
00:31:25Nope.
00:31:26All right.
00:31:27Well, we still disagree on that.
00:31:28That's okay.
00:31:29That's no, that's what this is for.
00:31:30But you mentioned the, the throw that may made, and I want to, we'll break it down a
00:31:36little bit more.
00:31:37We'll, we'll take the last sort of half 15, half hour of the show to do all the may stuff.
00:31:41But one more thing on the coaching and it was going into the wind in overtime and may
00:31:47mentioned the wind that he was thrown into the wind.
00:31:49And then he kind of took it back on WEI.
00:31:51He was like, you know, it was a mechanics thing.
00:31:52And I want to get into the mechanics of it because he did drift out of the pocket to
00:31:56the right, which we've talked about on the show many times, and that might've sped him
00:31:59up a bit.
00:32:01He was also throwing into the wind and drug Mayo didn't answer to it.
00:32:04He said that the wind was changing, but I thought that was kind of an odd coaching thing
00:32:08where they, they had the ability and they said, no, let's, let's throw into the wind
00:32:13and give them the wind at their backs.
00:32:14I don't know if you have many thoughts or ideas on this, but, and I haven't looked too
00:32:18much into it over the last couple of days, but my understanding is they were going into
00:32:22the wind and overtime.
00:32:23And I just think that having the opportunity to have it at your backs and not, I thought
00:32:27that was kind of strange.
00:32:28I did too.
00:32:29And I know Mayo was saying like, the wind was changing or whatever from the beginning
00:32:32of the game.
00:32:33And I'm like, Mayo, there are literally on top of flags, there's flags, right?
00:32:38You can see where the wind is going.
00:32:40So what are we talking about here?
00:32:41And I don't know, maybe he just misspoke or whatever.
00:32:44And maybe like there was a change or something.
00:32:45I don't know.
00:32:47But if they knew they were throwing into the wind, I agree.
00:32:50That is an egregious.
00:32:51Yes, it is.
00:32:52That's very, very bad.
00:32:53That's one where like, I can't even look the other way.
00:32:55It's like, that doesn't make any sense.
00:32:57You have to be on top of that shit as a head coach.
00:32:59And you need to have somebody on top of that who is in your ear saying, no, this is the
00:33:03wind.
00:33:04We need this.
00:33:05We need this, or we need to know this heading into overtime.
00:33:07And that's where I was talking to Andre Weingarten, friend of the show.
00:33:10He was saying next year, I think Gerard Mayo needs an assistant head coach with experience.
00:33:15That's like Ron Rivera or whomever.
00:33:17I completely agree because he's going to take his lumps and make his mistakes and he needs
00:33:21to learn.
00:33:22And that's part of being a young coach.
00:33:23Like people keep wanting to say, oh, he's not prepared.
00:33:26Most coaches who've never had coaches, never been head coaches before, aren't really prepared.
00:33:29There's so many things that come up.
00:33:31Bill Belichick has even said that like no coach, every coach should have some advisor
00:33:36figure like Bill had Ernie Adams.
00:33:39It's not like Bill was doing everything on his own either.
00:33:41He was talking to Ernie constantly.
00:33:42Ernie is a big reason they won Super Bowls because he was influencing some of the decisions
00:33:46that Bill was making.
00:33:48So and again, we need to keep reiterating and managing expectations where like the Patriots
00:33:53didn't have their pick of the litter when it came to putting a coaching staff together.
00:33:56They literally did the best they could with what they had.
00:33:59So hopefully maybe next year you find somebody who can be more of that advisor, you know,
00:34:03maybe above a McAdoo who I was, I was like, Hey, let's wait and see.
00:34:07Because like Tom Coughlin has respect for him.
00:34:09He was dealt a pretty shitty hand when he was with the Giants, like wanted to go to
00:34:12Dino Smith, but couldn't because of the whole, you know, Eli thing and all that.
00:34:15So, but now we know clearly there's a lot of things that aren't really going right.
00:34:19I don't know.
00:34:21We also don't know where Ben McAdoo has helped him either.
00:34:23So, you know, I want to be kind of fair, but yeah, at the end of the day, decisions like
00:34:27that where you throw into the wind and overtime when like literally Belichick, there's the
00:34:32Peyton Manning game, Mayo was on the team when they had the, you know, a punt into the
00:34:37wind or whatever.
00:34:38And he decided to win instead of getting the possession.
00:34:41Like you were on that team.
00:34:42That's something I would hope you'd be more aware of.
00:34:44I understand his mind's going a million miles an hour, but it's like, you should have time
00:34:47to think about that.
00:34:48So that's something, something to get on top of we've, it's what we think it was.
00:34:53Yeah.
00:34:54No, we've you know, we've given the coaches the benefit of the doubt drug mail a lot of
00:34:59times because you know, we're, we've been reasonable in the fact that it's his first
00:35:02year and you're going to take your lumps.
00:35:04But that's one of those things where like, man, you shouldn't have to take your lumps
00:35:07on a decision in overtime.
00:35:09That's something situational football wise, like you should know and you should have something.
00:35:12So again, there may be more to it that we don't know, but on the surface, it looks like
00:35:18they had the football, they were throwing into the wind, may try to go deep and make
00:35:20a play and it got caught up there because of a poor, a poor coaching decision and not
00:35:25having your guys ready to pick where you want it to go in overtime.
00:35:29So, so not good.
00:35:30Maybe we'll learn more about it and you know, we'll we'll, we'll hear a little bit more
00:35:34and see if there was, I guess another layer to it.
00:35:37But as of right now, it looks like a bad decision that something small that could have potentially
00:35:42cost them the game.
00:35:43So not good on Mayo at all there.
00:35:45Any more stuff on the coaching or do you want to get right into dirt mayor?
00:35:48I think we're going to get into Drake man.
00:35:49I can't really think of a perfect, all right, let's do May.
00:35:51But before we do, let's talk about game time because right now, if you're heading to Chicago
00:35:57this weekend for Pat's versus bears, you can get into solar field for as little as $179
00:36:03on the game time app and the following weekend Patriots are hosting the Los Angeles Rams
00:36:08at Foxborough's Gillette stadium and you can get into that one on the 17th for as little
00:36:13as $81 on the game time app game time has the game time picks feature as well.
00:36:18It filters out the fluff to show you only incredible deals on great seats.
00:36:22You don't have to waste time searching through thousands of tickets.
00:36:25They have great deals.
00:36:26They have super deals.
00:36:28They have awesome deals and they're right in there on the app for you to to give you
00:36:32the best prices on all of these seats.
00:36:35They also, you can look at your seat view on the app as well.
00:36:38So you can see exactly what you're going to be looking at on the field, on the ice, on
00:36:42the turf, any concert venues as well.
00:36:44You can see what it's going to look like right in the app, all in pricing as well.
00:36:49It shows you the entire total upfront with no surprise fees.
00:36:52That's always a pain in the butt.
00:36:53When you go into a ticketing app, you think you're getting a good deal and then all of
00:36:56a sudden there's all these fees.
00:36:58Game time doesn't have it because they have the all in pricing feature.
00:37:01So take the guesswork out of buying tickets with game time.
00:37:05Download the game time app, create an account and use code CLNS for $20 off your first purchase
00:37:11terms apply.
00:37:12Again, create an account and redeem that code CLNS for $20 off.
00:37:16Download game time today.
00:37:17What time is it?
00:37:18Taylor?
00:37:19Game time.
00:37:20It sure is game time.
00:37:21What else?
00:37:22It is.
00:37:23It's time.
00:37:24Finally, to break down Drake may Patriots quarterback goes 29 to 41 for 206 yards in
00:37:29the air.
00:37:30Throws that miraculous touchdown.
00:37:31Also throws to two interceptions has eight carries for 95 yards, 11.9 yards per rush
00:37:38on those.
00:37:39He also had the fumble on the strip sack.
00:37:41So definitely a rollercoaster of a game for May.
00:37:44I think some more good than bad, but the turnovers may be a question mark.
00:37:48Obviously we'll break them all down to buy a money hooker.
00:37:51The last one really decides the game in overtime.
00:37:53So what I'll do is basically hand it over to you, Taylor.
00:37:56We have some highlights.
00:37:57We have some lowlights from May on Sunday in Tennessee, so take us through it and let's
00:38:01break down number 10.
00:38:02Yes, sir.
00:38:03So as usual, we're going to start with all the good stuff with Drake made the things
00:38:06that really stood out to me.
00:38:07There were a lot of plays to choose from, but really what I wanted to focus on was how
00:38:11he was able to use his mobility to basically keep the Patriots in this game at all.
00:38:15A lot of scrambles to choose from narrowed it down to four, not all necessarily scrambles,
00:38:20but really even plays where he was off platform.
00:38:23And as Patriots fans, a lot of people don't really expect that their quarterback is going
00:38:27to make something happen when his feet aren't set.
00:38:29Usually it's an absolute disaster.
00:38:31What Drake may, we really were able to see his athleticism and what he can do with that
00:38:35talent here.
00:38:37We've got his 22 yard scramble on third and 15.
00:38:40This is the kind of play we always talk about it where with the Jacoby Berset, no offense
00:38:44to him.
00:38:45These are the kind of plays you kind of assume are dead in the water just because he doesn't
00:38:48really have the skill set to extend them as much as he may need to.
00:38:51And then also like the torque, the elasticity in his arm, the strength necessarily make
00:38:56throws if he has to do it off platform or run 22 yards when he needs a country mile
00:39:02on third down.
00:39:03So let's get into this with the route concept.
00:39:06So the Patriots are running, this is a pretty popular, a quarter speeder that they like
00:39:09to run.
00:39:10It's actually very similar to the one that Drake may through to Jayvon Baker in that
00:39:14Eagles preseason game, the deep ball that Jayvon Baker wasn't able to grab.
00:39:18So I'm pretty sure it's a verticals concept, but with options from the receivers based
00:39:23on the coverage they get.
00:39:24So as we can see, you're going to have at the bottom off coverage.
00:39:27So this is going to turn into a curl to Mario Douglas is going to run a seam.
00:39:30Then you're going to have Hunter Henry sitting over the ball right here.
00:39:34This is really a decoy to suck up coverage, or if you may just need to get the ball out
00:39:37of his hand, that guy's an option.
00:39:39And then you have a corner post at the top from Keyshawn booty.
00:39:43Now the Titans are what they did a lot of this game was run cover three from two high
00:39:48shelves, often with man on the backside.
00:39:50If the Patriots showed them some type of three receiver set, so that's what you're going
00:39:54to get here.
00:39:55The safety to the field, the three receiver side is going to drop down or cover three
00:39:59buzz.
00:40:00If you play Madden, then you're going to get the safety going into the deep middle and
00:40:05man coverage.
00:40:06As I said, on the backside.
00:40:08Now run the play a little bit, one, two, three, four, five step drop from Drake may.
00:40:12Now he actually does have a couple of options here.
00:40:14Now Kendrick Bourne, we saw it last time.
00:40:17Maybe he comes back to the ball and his shorts.
00:40:19Okay.
00:40:20I get maybe not want to throw to him.
00:40:21Also might've had an opportunity to Mario Douglas because he's already passed the scene
00:40:25defender.
00:40:26You've got this cornerback trying to split these two guys, but with this linebacker occupied
00:40:30over the middle, there's an opportunity.
00:40:32You can put some touch on this and DeMario Douglas can catch it, but at the same time,
00:40:36it's hard to fault Drake may when you have all this pocket to work with and a pretty
00:40:41clear lane, Drake may is going to trust his speed and athleticism to get him the first
00:40:46down marker, but also key block here from Hunter Henry.
00:40:49We spent the past few weeks talking about how Hunter's been so valuable on these scramble
00:40:54plays getting open for Drake here.
00:40:55He's actually going to throw a key block that allows Drake may to get past that linebacker
00:41:00and keep enough speed that he can kind of drag this defender, get more than he needs
00:41:05on the third down.
00:41:06All right, now we're going to see him actually throw on one of his scrambles.
00:41:10This is one of the best throws.
00:41:11I feel like every week we're saying, Oh, this is the best throw we've seen from Drake Bay.
00:41:15This one's ridiculous.
00:41:16This one was freaking sick, bro.
00:41:18All right.
00:41:19So this is a look where the Patriots typically run some type of gap concept.
00:41:22Like when you see a receiver and what's called a snipper position where they're typically
00:41:26between either a tackle and a tight end or a tackle and a guard, it tells you that they're
00:41:31probably going to be trying to run from this look, but they're not, they're actually going
00:41:34to be running play action.
00:41:35Ramond Ray Stevenson is going to fake like he's running some type of downhill run to
00:41:39the right before blocking.
00:41:40Then to this side, you're basically just going to get a deep, I wasn't sure what exactly
00:41:45this was, but it looks like some type of stop route from Keyshawn booty.
00:41:47It doesn't really matter, but we want to be focused on as to Mario Douglas on this crossing
00:41:52pattern over the middle.
00:41:53And then Kendrick Bourne.
00:41:55This is interesting because the Patriots, when they used to run this like Josh McDaniels,
00:41:59this was one of their go-to man beaters.
00:42:01They would typically have this receiver really just run a short route to occupy this defender
00:42:05and leave room back here, but he's actually going to run an out and up.
00:42:09And I'm not sure how intentional it is because the Titans are actually going to basically
00:42:14split this coverage where to the field side, we're going to, or not, yeah, it is the field
00:42:18side.
00:42:19You're going to get zone coverage and other cover three, but it looks like they're playing
00:42:22man on Hunter Henry and Kendrick Bourne because Ramond Ray Stevenson is on the other side.
00:42:28You see usually a receiver and a running back or manned up.
00:42:30I think here it's Hunter Henry and KB, but Hunter Henry is going to block, which makes
00:42:34this kind of hard to read, but you're going to see as Kendrick Bourne gets into his route,
00:42:39he's actually going to face press coverage, which makes it harder to run an out and up.
00:42:43Typically you want to run this against off coverage, have the defender bite up and then
00:42:46you blow past him.
00:42:47And it's going to kind of create a harder throw for Drake, maybe because this guy's
00:42:51able to peel off and get into the window.
00:42:54Right now let's focus on DeMario Douglas because he's running into a tough situation where
00:42:58the two hook defenders have pretty good leverage on this crossing route, especially knowing
00:43:03that this is man over here.
00:43:04They can drop under this and try to make sure that he doesn't get the ball and DeMario has
00:43:08to not only cut through these defenders, but Darian Lowe loses around the edge and Drake
00:43:14may is going to get a little bit of edge heat here and you're also going to get some heat
00:43:18in the inside.
00:43:19We're going to get the end zone angle for this for a better idea of what happens, but
00:43:22DeMario Douglas isn't really in an ideal spot, right?
00:43:24You got this defender who's chasing him, but this under the underneath defender is kind
00:43:28of in a spot where you're saying if he doesn't get depth, then I may be in a pretty good
00:43:32place.
00:43:33Drake may gets himself a nice soft edge because Hunter Henry's got the block, Ramond Ray Stevenson
00:43:38helps him even more, gets me out of the pocket and then is going to throw to a spot.
00:43:44Absolute beauty.
00:43:45DeMario Douglas.
00:43:46Great job tracking this ball over the defenders.
00:43:48As you can see, not only the defender that was initially chasing him, but Kendrick Bourne's
00:43:52defender is also in the picture, but Drake may puts enough touch on this to hit DeMario
00:43:57Douglas, who shows great concentration and not only make a juggling catch, but also get
00:44:02both feet in bounds and then really cool moment between him and KJ Osborne.
00:44:06He's been very fun on the sidelines, getting his guys hyped up.
00:44:09So let's see the end zone angle for this play.
00:44:12Play fake, drop back.
00:44:13He got the edge heat right there.
00:44:15And then Sebastian Day, Sebastian Joseph Day, I'm sorry, gets Mike and Winnie on the ground.
00:44:20So Drake may drift to his right, drift, drift a little pump.
00:44:24Also, I'm curious why he's trying to influence.
00:44:28You couldn't see it much on the other angle, but I think what he's trying to do is make
00:44:32sure this guy can't just make a beeline and get underneath the ball because the pump gets
00:44:37him to open up.
00:44:38See this?
00:44:39And that makes him a little bit later versus if he's in this position, may throws and he
00:44:44basically sprints there.
00:44:45Instead, it makes him a little bit later.
00:44:48And then a great, great ball from Drake may putting it over to defenders.
00:44:53And then again, Mario Douglas, great concentration to hold that way.
00:44:57And I like Kendrick Bourne stopping his route too.
00:44:59So his his defender doesn't run into it as much.
00:45:01I don't know how intentional that is, but him not just running to his spot and stopping
00:45:05off the sideline allows his guy to kind of wait a second and not just be running into
00:45:09the route as well.
00:45:10Exactly.
00:45:11All right.
00:45:12So now next play, we got here, curl the Keishon booty.
00:45:15This was one of Drake May's best throws of the day that I don't think people were really
00:45:19talking about.
00:45:20This was a beauty, especially because he was all platform throwing against very tight coverage.
00:45:24So the concept that we're going to get here, really it's Drake May's only looking at the
00:45:28right side of the field.
00:45:29So that's what we're going to focus on the primary route here.
00:45:31I think it might've actually been to Mario Douglas, because as you can see, there's this
00:45:36linebacker in the middle and it doesn't look like the Titans are playing man.
00:45:40So on this sit route for the Mario Douglas, you're thinking, okay, maybe against the linebacker.
00:45:44That's a good matchup, but you also have the option of Keishon booty who looks like he's
00:45:48running a corner stop.
00:45:50Some people call it a swirl.
00:45:51I think that's what it is in the 49ers terminology.
00:45:54Then Ramond Gray Stevenson is going to chip before releasing into the flat.
00:45:57That's important because it's going to influence an underneath defender and potentially make
00:46:01for an easier opportunity to Keishon booty coverage wise on the backend.
00:46:05This is pretty straightforward.
00:46:07Cover three buzz from the, uh, from the Titans.
00:46:10You're going to get this safety dropping down over anything that's coming over underneath
00:46:14and then pretty standard.
00:46:16But the trickier part here, and the Titans did this a few times.
00:46:19So the mud linebacker on the line of scrimmage would actually drop.
00:46:22And instead you would get the awful linebacker behind him or kind of stacked blitzing on
00:46:28some type of line game, which you're going to see.
00:46:30He's going to penetrate right here to the right side of Ben Brown.
00:46:33And then you're going to see a loop from, I believe that's Jeffrey Simmons.
00:46:37So as you can see, that disruption right there is going to kind of create a lane for Jeffrey
00:46:41Simmons who is now unblocked because the Patriots weren't able to pick this up well enough.
00:46:46Now he's whistling down the middle at Drake May.
00:46:49Now Drake's going to start to drift away, try to buy himself some more time.
00:46:52And now he's going to start to throw to Keishon booty.
00:46:55Very little a for anticipation here.
00:46:57It's nothing crazy, but still throwing before his receivers fully out of his break and putting
00:47:01this on a line.
00:47:03Keishon booty.
00:47:04Nice job coming back to the ball once he sees it's coming to him.
00:47:06And then again, you see the defender is right there.
00:47:09He's literally on his back.
00:47:10I'll show the end zone angle so we can get a little better appreciation for the ball
00:47:14placement from Drake May and also the catch from Keishon booty.
00:47:18So once again, we got the twist inside Jeffrey Simmons.
00:47:20I'm going to eat you for breakfast.
00:47:22No, you're not because I'm Drake mother freaking May.
00:47:25And I'm putting this literally can't put this anywhere else because the defender's arm is
00:47:30right there.
00:47:31This is inside at all.
00:47:33It's an incompletion.
00:47:34Again, good job by Keishon booty with the strong hands to make this grab convert for
00:47:39the Patriots.
00:47:40Big play there.
00:47:41Here we go.
00:47:42Let's have fun.
00:47:43Those are beating scrambled touchdown.
00:47:46This was freaking insane.
00:47:48This one's going to take a little while to break down, but there was actually an opportunity
00:47:51to score earlier on the play and in structure, but also given the situation, I understand
00:47:56there's no time left.
00:47:57Drake may have been a little panicky, but he still made it work.
00:47:59So, you know, go off young King, but what we're going to see here is essentially kind
00:48:03of a high low slash spacing concept.
00:48:05So you're going to get the spacing with these two curl routes, and then you're going to
00:48:09get Hunter Henry on the back line on a dig.
00:48:12This is pretty common.
00:48:13Usually you want to put your back guys on that part of the field because you can throw
00:48:16a 50 50 ball up.
00:48:18He goes up, grabs it, and hopefully keeps his feet in bounds.
00:48:20But the guy that Drake may is going to look to first is Ramond Ray Stevenson.
00:48:24That's going to be tough because the coverage you're going to get to this side is essentially
00:48:27like, it looks to me like some kind of match quarters where this safety is going to end
00:48:32up taking Hunter Henry's route.
00:48:34But reminder, he Stevenson is kind of going to get stuck in a void between two defenders
00:48:37and he's not going to be a really great option on the play.
00:48:40You're also going to get Sebastian Joseph day dropping back to spy Drake and keep him
00:48:44from just running up the middle.
00:48:45So it's really only a three man rush from the Titans.
00:48:49Now this is why I went full speed because slow motion for the whole thing would have
00:48:51like drug driven me crazy.
00:48:53As you can see, the center meet the fender covered on is covering Ramond Ray Stevenson
00:48:57and you can see Drake Mase thinking of throwing to him, right?
00:49:00You can kind of see dropping the ball.
00:49:03He's waiting to throw it, but he's like, ah, that's not a good window.
00:49:05I don't want to throw that.
00:49:06And then he's looking at Kendrick Bourne up.
00:49:08He's occupied too.
00:49:09But you do have Hunter Henry open in the back of the end zone.
00:49:13Now, if Drake may puts a little bit of touch on this, he hits him for a touchdown.
00:49:17But I think once he saw his first two options weren't there, he got a little skittish and
00:49:20was like, all right, I'm in play.
00:49:21He's already in freestyle mode.
00:49:23You can see it in his in his drop already.
00:49:25He's kind of getting ready to move around.
00:49:26Yeah. And you can see how antsy he is.
00:49:28Yep. Once those two are gone, he's like, all right, I got to do something.
00:49:32He kind of like this is not ideal.
00:49:33He drips into his tackle a little bit, then gets back to the middle of the pocket.
00:49:38He looks to the left where I think at this point he probably knows that this is off
00:49:42schedule. That's why I didn't show the other side.
00:49:44The route concepts didn't matter.
00:49:45He didn't look there when it was in schedule.
00:49:46Right. As you can see, there's really no options right now when he's looking and run,
00:49:51run, run, guys trying to get open, trying to get open.
00:49:53Drake tries to go a little bit to the right.
00:49:55And actually, Ramond Drake is open.
00:49:57Like, I think maybe if he had thrown it right here, he could have converted this to the
00:50:03pylon. But to be fair, he threw it on a similar play.
00:50:07I think it was either flag or they picked it up.
00:50:09I couldn't remember. I can't remember right now.
00:50:11But I can see why maybe he didn't feel great about making that throw.
00:50:14It was like, I'm just going to try to keep buying time.
00:50:17Maybe I get a space to run.
00:50:18What have you doesn't want to make that.
00:50:21But he's also got this edge rush.
00:50:22You're starting to bear down on him.
00:50:23And I think that's part of the equation as well.
00:50:25Not only is he making a pretty tough throw to a running back who'd have to catch us here
00:50:30on the sideline, but I think this is Arden Key is also coming around.
00:50:33It's going to force him to redirect steps up in the pocket.
00:50:35This was pretty sick.
00:50:36This was going to use slow motion.
00:50:38Right. Actually, this is Arden Key.
00:50:40Jukes him. He ends up on the ground.
00:50:42Then he also has to do.
00:50:43Gary is like, oh, get out of the way.
00:50:45And I know you can criticize like the Darian Lowe and Michael Jordan
00:50:48for not really doing a whole lot here.
00:50:49They're literally just trying not to get flagged, right?
00:50:52They don't know what's happening as an offensive lineman.
00:50:54This is a very scary position to be in.
00:50:56You're just like, I'll throw a block if I can.
00:50:58But like, I don't want to be the reason this play doesn't work.
00:51:00Right. Actually, Darian, good awareness to make him miss.
00:51:04And then you got these two defenders who were actually initially covering Hunter.
00:51:09Henry, we'll touch on later.
00:51:10And another defender said, you know what?
00:51:12We're just going to trigger and try to hit the quarterback.
00:51:15That gets Drake made a turn around with to the other side of the field.
00:51:19Nothing's open when he turns, but he's actually going to show
00:51:22great anticipation with remandery.
00:51:24Stevenson starts breaking back against the grain.
00:51:26Great awareness from Stevenson as well.
00:51:28Let's just go before Stevenson's actually even open.
00:51:31He's like, I'm about to get hit.
00:51:32I just got to throw to a spot, give him a chance.
00:51:34So very full of grace.
00:51:35Please let this be a touchdown because we ain't got no time left.
00:51:39But it's OK, because you're
00:51:40monitoring Stevenson is an absolute baller, comes back to the ball,
00:51:43makes the contested catch for the buzzer beating touchdown.
00:51:47Then obviously the Patriots can put on the field goal to send the game
00:51:49into overtime.
00:51:51Now, the end zone angle is where I want to highlight Hunter Henry,
00:51:54because I thought, you know, on Twitter, people were saying,
00:51:56oh, why would he go out of bounds?
00:51:57Why can't he come back inside?
00:51:59Why do you let himself get pushed out?
00:52:00One, you're not really letting yourself get pushed out.
00:52:03It's just a tough position to be in during these scramble drills.
00:52:05But also, if you step out of bounds and it's not a foul
00:52:08that someone pushed you out, you can't touch the ball because then it's
00:52:11illegal touching.
00:52:12I believe that's the kind of penalty we're going to run out the clock.
00:52:14And I think the game might have been over.
00:52:15Not 100% sure on that.
00:52:17But still, Hunter Henry was not eligible on the play once he was out of bounds.
00:52:20So first, let's run it.
00:52:23Great me going through his progressions.
00:52:24Oh, my God, no one's open. What do I do? What do I do?
00:52:25Now, Hunter Henry, like we said, was open.
00:52:28He's trying to redirect.
00:52:29So because he knows he's running out of space.
00:52:31But when he tries to do that, the defender heads up, play,
00:52:34pushes him out of bounds and recognizes that and is like, all right,
00:52:38I just got to stay out of the way to confuse Drake.
00:52:40And you can actually see him throw his hands up when Drake looks at him
00:52:43and is like, no, no, no, no, no. Don't throw.
00:52:45I'm not an option. I don't want you to get flagged.
00:52:48And right before that happens, Drake may ends up scoring the touchdown.
00:52:51They're really smart.
00:52:52Heads up play from the veteran Hunter Henry.
00:52:54And as we can see, man, Drake may had to put the game on his back
00:52:58because the run game was non-existent.
00:52:59The pass pro is inconsistent.
00:53:01Guys weren't getting open consistently.
00:53:03Like Henry Bourne was on the ground like two or three times.
00:53:06Wasn't running his routes to the sticks consistently either,
00:53:08which was a weird mistake.
00:53:09It felt like for a veteran receiver.
00:53:12But yeah, and actually, we're going to touch on that in the next section.
00:53:15Drake May's mobility is keeping the Patriots alive in these games.
00:53:18Like Jonathan Jones said, I believe it was yesterday.
00:53:21This team needs to find ways to win and finish in those situations.
00:53:24But everybody after the game was raving about Drake
00:53:27wanting to play for him, feeling like they always have a chance to win,
00:53:30which is not something you've heard about.
00:53:31Patriots quarterbacks in the past finally got their guy.
00:53:34But obviously, you know,
00:53:36want to continue to try to develop and improve before this offseason
00:53:39comes up where you really start to try to actually weaponize the offense,
00:53:43because hopefully free agents want to play with the young kid.
00:53:46Yep, for sure.
00:53:47Two quick notes on that last play.
00:53:48Just one thing I will say is that I love is how he keeps his eyes
00:53:52downfield the entire time that allows him to stay on remandre
00:53:55and know where his guys are at any given time.
00:53:57And you see that he's about to break back.
00:53:59If he's not aware of where those guys are,
00:54:02he's not throwing that ball with anticipation.
00:54:04He's probably just going to end up getting sacked or throwing up
00:54:06a nonsense throw in the middle of the end zone could easily get picked.
00:54:09But he knew where he was going,
00:54:10knew where his guys were, because he's keeping his eye downfield.
00:54:13Now, this just came up when I was watching it, too, with with Hunter Henry
00:54:16kind of waving him off.
00:54:18I wonder if he could have just fell and laid in the white on the ground.
00:54:21Like, have you seen those guys who they'll just cut like on kick returns?
00:54:25One guy will just lay down and try and blend into the ground
00:54:28and or like into the color of the the color of the end zone.
00:54:33Like if like Titans is spelled out in blue and you're in a blue jersey.
00:54:36One guy hides.
00:54:37Yeah, they literally just hide and they lay down on the ground
00:54:40and then they come out and return the kick that way.
00:54:41I wonder if Hunter Henry went through their mind that, hey, I'm out of bounds.
00:54:45Just lay in the white.
00:54:45I'm in a white jersey.
00:54:46Drake's not even going to confuse me,
00:54:47because even if he's saying they're going like, don't throw to me.
00:54:50He could confuse that with, hey, I'm open.
00:54:53Throw to me waving them off.
00:54:54So it's almost like you just kind of got to stand there and be like,
00:54:56hey, I'm not in the play anymore.
00:54:57But Drake knew that on him.
00:55:00Yeah, exactly.
00:55:01And good on Henry, too, for for basically just standing there and knowing,
00:55:04hey, I'm out of bounds.
00:55:06This is going to get called back. All right.
00:55:07That's the good stuff for me.
00:55:08We do have a couple of lights as well.
00:55:10We got to be fair here and talk about some things
00:55:12that they didn't do great on Sunday as well.
00:55:14So, Taylor, let's run through.
00:55:16And we're not trying to come after the kid here.
00:55:18These are just things where you need to understand the things
00:55:20that he needs to improve on so you can see if he's making growth
00:55:23or be staying in the same place or if he's regressing.
00:55:26I'd really see a whole lot of regression here.
00:55:28These were just a lot of plays where I'm thinking this is a young quarterback
00:55:31in his four.
00:55:32This is third or fourth or third start, right?
00:55:35Third game as a starter.
00:55:36Third full game as a starter.
00:55:38So some of this is going to happen.
00:55:40He needs to learn what he can and can't get away with.
00:55:42But we'll dive into the reasons for all of these turnovers as we go.
00:55:45So this play, the Patriots, this is going to be a play
00:55:49that Drake is going to read the left side of the field.
00:55:51You're going to get another kind of high low concept
00:55:53with pretty much a crossing route from DeMario Douglas.
00:55:56Then defensively, Titans once again in a two high shell,
00:55:59but they're actually running cover one buzz with man coverage to the backside.
00:56:04And the one you're going to want to focus on really here is a money hooker.
00:56:07That buzz safety money hooker pick Drake Mayoff twice in this game.
00:56:11This first one was a really great play from the veterans
00:56:14showing why he is a part of one of the best defenses in the NFL.
00:56:18And up front, we have a very similar situation the last time
00:56:21where you have a mud linebacker who's actually dropping into coverage.
00:56:24A second level linebacker is actually going to blitz as part of a line game.
00:56:28But here when we talked about in the preview
00:56:31how they had to watch out for those twists between art and key, Jeffrey Simmons.
00:56:35We did.
00:56:36The reason that you're going to get pressure here is because it is a little bit
00:56:39different from our breakdown, because here Simmons is further on the inside.
00:56:43It's a bit of a longer loop here, but line game is going to work.
00:56:46And both these guys are going to end up getting some pressure on the quarterback.
00:56:49But first, Drake may get to the top of his drop.
00:56:51You can see from the way that he kind of plants his foot like this.
00:56:55So one, bam, he's trying to get this ball out, I think,
00:56:58with anticipation to Demario Douglas.
00:57:00But Imani Hooker is about to drive on this throw.
00:57:02I think it's kind of smart for Drake
00:57:04not to make this and try to go to his backside dig.
00:57:07In theory, the difficult part is pressure forces him to move off his spot. Right.
00:57:12So one, you're going to get Arden Key as the initial penetrator, creating pressure
00:57:16that's going to force Drake made a slide to his left.
00:57:18And then Jeffrey Simmons is actually going to loop around
00:57:21and really force Drake made to kind of speed up his clock a little bit.
00:57:24And not only that, but Imani Hooker does a great job
00:57:28reading the quarterback and falling off Demario Douglas,
00:57:30knowing that he's about to run into another zone defender.
00:57:34Hooker reads the quarterback.
00:57:36Drake Bay thinks that he's got this window to jail and poke.
00:57:39And I mean, part of it is that he ends up getting hit when he lets the ball go,
00:57:43but still don't want to throw into this kind of window, ends up letting it go.
00:57:47Hooker is right underneath it, picks it off, even if it was.
00:57:51And you can tell that the throw had something.
00:57:53I'm sorry, the hit had something to do with it.
00:57:54Right. Because even Jalen Polk had to kind of go backwards
00:57:57because it would have been on his back shoulder.
00:57:59Leave out the end view, end zone view of this as well.
00:58:01I don't. That's OK.
00:58:03So pretty much just one of those things where you're saying, hey, you know,
00:58:06when you're about to get hit, make sure you're still able to see the full field.
00:58:10Not a big thing that I'm worried about.
00:58:11Honestly, when I saw it, I was like, you don't really see that
00:58:13from Drake may very often, but rookie mistake is.
00:58:17Exactly.
00:58:18If he doesn't repeat these mistakes, one off done, whatever it happens.
00:58:22Now, the strip sack.
00:58:23This is one where I understand where he was coming from,
00:58:27because this was after he had already had that last second pitch
00:58:30to Ramond Ray Stevenson while he was getting sacked.
00:58:32A play you saw him make like multiple times back when he was at UNC.
00:58:36But when you saw that at UNC, you also saw moments
00:58:38where he would try to make plays like that and it would bite him in the butt.
00:58:41And I that's why when it came into him in the NFL, I was saying
00:58:45there's going to be learning moments.
00:58:46He's got to learn what he can't do, but that's just part of the NFL experience.
00:58:50He's 22. He'll figure it out.
00:58:52Not an egregious mistake, but when we got to break down anyway.
00:58:54So the Patriots are going to run an out and up this time
00:58:58against an off coverage defender.
00:59:00And you're going to get a hook here from Hunter Henry.
00:59:02This side of the field, honestly, doesn't matter,
00:59:03but you are going to get a scan and release from Michael Hastie.
00:59:07And once again, you're going to get a two high shell with the Titans
00:59:11and cover three.
00:59:12They're going to drop and have a buzz defender
00:59:15from the safety to try to take away the middle of the field.
00:59:18Now, Drake, he's going to pump, but the defender doesn't bite on it at all.
00:59:22Right. So he's in his back pedal.
00:59:24He's not going down like this is really an hour.
00:59:26He continues to get depth, unfortunately.
00:59:29But Darian Lowe loses around the edge.
00:59:31And this is where pressure is going to come into play.
00:59:34Drake is going to try to drift away and see if he can make something out of this.
00:59:37But he's going to try to throw the ball and Arden Key really heads up play
00:59:41to hit it out of his hands.
00:59:43Fumble. I know people got on to Michael Hastie for not recovering this,
00:59:46but like, I really don't know. It's just a bad bounce.
00:59:48I looked at I watched it over a few times and people, you know,
00:59:52people get pissed when it's like you try and scoop the ball up
00:59:55and do something else with it instead of just jumping on it.
00:59:57He tried to jump on the ball.
00:59:58It just took an awkward bounce through his arms.
01:00:01Exactly. You treat the ball like a grenade.
01:00:02You try to land on it, because if you like you said, if you do,
01:00:05it's probably going to wiggle out just a bad bounce of the ball.
01:00:07And unfortunately, a turnover for the Patriots.
01:00:10We're in a moment for Drake May when like you kind of are able to pat the ball
01:00:13and you're in the pocket for two seconds.
01:00:15You have to anticipate that someone's probably coming around the corner.
01:00:18And especially if you feel them bearing down, be very careful.
01:00:22I think in the other play, he was being dragged down by his waist in that.
01:00:46I'm back.
01:00:47It was you, OK?
01:00:48I don't know what happened there.
01:00:49My bad.
01:00:50That's OK.
01:00:51I couldn't tell if it was me or you.
01:00:52I was just looking at all a bunch of scrolling wheels.
01:00:54And I don't know if it was both of us.
01:00:55But you're back.
01:00:56I'm back.
01:00:57Yeah, I'm back.
01:00:58I missed you all.
01:00:59That was that was Gary on.
01:01:00Too long.
01:01:01But we're talking about.
01:01:02Yeah.
01:01:03We're in a moment for Drake May when like you kind of are able to pat the ball
01:01:04and you're in the pocket for two seconds.
01:01:05And especially if you feel them bearing down, be very careful.
01:01:06I think in the other play, he was being dragged down by his waist in that.
01:01:07I think in the other play.
01:01:08I'm back.
01:01:09I'm back.
01:01:10I missed you all.
01:01:11That was that was Gary on.
01:01:12Too long.
01:01:13But we're talking about.
01:01:14Yeah.
01:01:15We're in a moment for Drake May.
01:01:16Let's move on.
01:01:17This was the most egregious mistake, I think.
01:01:18And it was one of the only ones where I have no idea why he did this.
01:01:19This one's super straightforward.
01:01:20It's just a go route from Kendrick Bourne down the sideline.
01:01:21Now, the way that this ends up when Drake May's trying to throw it, you'd expect him
01:01:22to throw a back shoulder ball here.
01:01:23Right.
01:01:24Because the corner is sitting right on top of it.
01:01:25For some reason, he throws this inside of the corner.
01:01:26And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:27And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:28And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:29And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:31And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:32And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:33And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:34And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:35And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:36And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:37And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:38And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:39And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:40And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:41And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:42And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:43And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:44And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:45And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:46And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:47And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:48And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:49And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:50And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:51And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:52And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:53And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:54And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:55And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:56And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:57And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:58And then he's going to throw it.
01:01:59And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:00And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:01And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:02And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:03And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:04And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:05And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:06And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:07And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:08And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:09And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:10And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:11And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:12And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:13And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:14And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:15And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:16And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:17And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:18And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:19And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:20And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:21And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:22And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:23And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:24And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:25And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:26And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:27And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:28And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:29And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:30And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:31And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:32And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:33And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:34And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:35And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:36And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:37And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:38And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:39And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:40And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:41And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:42And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:43And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:44And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:45And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:46And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:47And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:48And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:49And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:50And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:51And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:52And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:53And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:54And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:55And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:56And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:57And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:58And then he's going to throw it.
01:02:59And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:00And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:01And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:02And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:03And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:04And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:05And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:06And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:07And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:08And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:09And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:10And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:11And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:12And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:13And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:14And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:15And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:16And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:17And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:18And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:19And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:20And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:21And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:22And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:23And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:24And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:25And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:26And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:27And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:28And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:29And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:30And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:31And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:32And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:33And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:34And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:35And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:36And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:37And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:38And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:39And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:40And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:41And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:42And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:43And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:44And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:45And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:46And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:47And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:48And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:49And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:50And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:51And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:52And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:53And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:54And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:55And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:56And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:57And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:58And then he's going to throw it.
01:03:59And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:00And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:01And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:02And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:03And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:04And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:05And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:06And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:07And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:08And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:09And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:10And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:11And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:12And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:13And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:14And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:15And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:16And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:17And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:18And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:19And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:20And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:21And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:22And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:23And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:24And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:25And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:26And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:27And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:28And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:29And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:30And then he's going to throw it.
01:04:32So I mean, somebody's saying it's like Josh Allen.
01:04:35Oh, yeah, the freakish ability.
01:04:36I don't.
01:04:37OK, so I don't think that Drake may.
01:04:38And I've said this.
01:04:39I said this during the draft.
01:04:41I don't think he makes the kind of egregious mistakes
01:04:43that Josh Allen did, especially when he was in college
01:04:45and when he was a young player.
01:04:46Like, I don't think there's that evil Drake may.
01:04:48I really think it's just like he needs to see more.
01:04:51It's not like he's looking at a linebacker
01:04:53and throwing to that linebacker like you'd see at times
01:04:55with the Josh Allen.
01:04:56But like we said, you don't want to see him
01:04:58throwing to the wrong leverage.
01:05:00That's pretty bad.
01:05:01One common theme that we talk about every week
01:05:04is sometimes just knowing when to get the ball
01:05:06out of your hands and not take a hit.
01:05:08I think that's another area where, like,
01:05:10as the season goes on and as his career goes on,
01:05:12he'll understand, OK, live to fight another day,
01:05:14because I think that was third down.
01:05:16So instead of being able to punt
01:05:18and giving your defense a better chance,
01:05:20you get stripped and put them in a really bad spot
01:05:22where the Titans can pretty easily score.
01:05:24But for the most part, like, we're not really
01:05:26talking about egregiously errant throws
01:05:29when it comes to underneath passes,
01:05:30which I think is a big thing we kept getting on him about.
01:05:33But really, it's just understand what you can and can't do.
01:05:36Don't try to throw when you got a rusher bearing down on you
01:05:39and you don't know where his hands are.
01:05:41Like, sometimes you just got to eat the play.
01:05:43Other times where sometimes you just need to understand
01:05:45that you don't have to panic necessarily.
01:05:48I think he'll be fine.
01:05:49This was a tough game.
01:05:50He dropped back 50 times.
01:05:52He knew that he had to be the one to make a play.
01:05:55He'll figure it out.
01:05:56Overall, very impressive stuff from the rookie.
01:05:58Just like any rookie in the NFL, a lot of room to grow.
01:06:01Definitely room to grow.
01:06:02And I like that you mentioned the part about no really,
01:06:05like, he's not spraying throws underneath.
01:06:07And like, there was a point in time on Sunday,
01:06:09May was 20 of 23 passing,
01:06:11and they were taking away that deep half of the field.
01:06:15And he was just, he was taking what they gave him,
01:06:17dump it off, get some yards, and kind of move the chains.
01:06:20And again, it's not perfect, right?
01:06:21Three turnovers, two interceptions,
01:06:23the one that ends it, and the strip sack.
01:06:25But running for 95 yards on eight carries,
01:06:27being able to move the football like that.
01:06:29He's their best player on offense at 22.
01:06:31You're going to have to live and die with the mistakes right now
01:06:34because it is only his third start.
01:06:36He is only 22.
01:06:37He doesn't have the experience.
01:06:38He's learning on the job.
01:06:39And right now I would say,
01:06:41I think pretty much anyone would say he's ahead of schedule
01:06:43compared to what we expected from him as the Patriots quarterback.
01:06:46So again, they follow the two and seven to Tennessee,
01:06:49but some good to take away from Drake May.
01:06:51The other stuff we talked about, the coaching, the run offense,
01:06:53the run defense, it needs improvement,
01:06:55but you have cornerstones in May and Gonzalez on both sides of the ball.
01:06:58So we'll see if they can keep, excuse me.
01:07:01We'll see if they can keep building on this two and seven season
01:07:04as they move forward to take on the Chicago Bears next Sunday in Chicago.
01:07:09So we will be back tomorrow here on Patriots Day.
01:07:12We'll do a mailbag episode.
01:07:14So make sure you rate, review, and subscribe to the channel.
01:07:16We'll be back tomorrow afternoon at some point.
01:07:18We'll have an opponent preview on the Chicago Bears,
01:07:22and then we'll move right along in the season.
01:07:24Again, Patriots two and seven heading into week 10.
01:07:27So that'll do it for us here on Patriots Daily.
01:07:30Thank you, Taylor, for breaking down the film
01:07:32and taking us all through it.
01:07:33We appreciate you.
01:07:34We appreciate the work, as always.
01:07:36Follow Taylor on Twitter, at TKyles39,
01:07:38for all of his film work and all of his Patriots knowledge.
01:07:42I guess if you want to, you can follow me, at Mike Catholic,
01:07:44as well, for my nonsense on the fact that I think Baker Mayfield
01:07:49and Todd Bowles made the right decision last night.
01:07:51But that's either here nor there.
01:07:52Now that you have your bearings, Taylor.
01:07:54I was going to say, you can shirt me now that I know you're pissed about it.
01:07:58But regardless.
01:07:59Also, go vote.
01:08:00Go vote.
01:08:01Definitely go vote.
01:08:02We have a fun night ahead of us, Taylor.
01:08:04We definitely do.
01:08:06That'll be an interesting one here.
01:08:08But we're done.
01:08:09So again, thanks for watching.
01:08:11We'll be back soon.
01:08:12We appreciate you for joining us.
01:08:13Until next time, take care of yourselves.
01:08:15Take care of each other.
01:08:16We'll talk to you soon.
01:08:17Peace out, everyone.
