00:00All right, so first play we're going to look at, second and two, one of the Patriots' first
00:04offensive plays.
00:10What's going on, everyone?
00:11Mike Kadlec, Taylor Kyles here for CLNS Media, back with another episode of the Pat's Daily
00:16Podcast, brought to you by, what am I doing?
00:20Brought to you by PrizePix.
00:21We don't like them.
00:23I'm losing my mind.
00:24I took a day off.
00:26I went to a wedding yesterday.
00:27I missed Drake Mays' debut in person.
00:29But Taylor was there, so maybe I'm a little rusty.
00:32Maybe I'm a little tired.
00:33I might have bagged under my eyes.
00:35Anyway, we're here.
00:36We're back with a mailbag and a film breakdown about Drake Mays' debut.
00:40Patriots lose 41-21 yesterday at Gillette Stadium.
00:44But like I said, Taylor, I wasn't there.
00:46And so yes, maybe I was sitting in a 99 before the game, watching the first half at a bar,
00:55but I didn't catch all of it.
00:56I did not catch the whole thing.
00:58I had other stuff to do.
01:00I was at the wedding.
01:01I was in and out of things.
01:02So I was watching the game on my phone.
01:03I was watching it on TV in the hotel room.
01:05So I was back and forth.
01:07Like I said, wasn't able to take it all in.
01:09So what I need from you before we start this thing off, before we dive into Drake Mays'
01:14two-minute drive at the end of the first half, overall, overarching thoughts from yesterday.
01:18What were the big couple takeaways that I should know because I wasn't able to see the
01:23whole thing?
01:24One thing that you didn't really experience because you weren't there, man, I haven't
01:28felt the stadium that excited and that loud and energetic in a long time.
01:33Like the touchdown to Booty, it was electric.
01:37Like you could feel the place shaking a little bit.
01:39So that was awesome.
01:40But then just the performance on the field.
01:42I mean, especially after going and getting to dive in and watch it, were there some bad
01:45things?
01:46Yes.
01:47Like, you know, the interception to Mario Douglas, obviously, Drake Mays said to himself,
01:50you cannot have passes sailing you over the middle of the field.
01:53That was one thing in college where I got away with it sometimes, but in the NFL, because
01:57guys have so much range, because space is so much tighter, because of the type of athletes
02:01you're facing, those things come back to bite you pretty quickly.
02:04So you had that.
02:05I thought the strip sack, he actually, although DeMontre Jacobs was one-on-one against Deneal
02:09Hunter, lost instantly, putting the kid in a tough spot.
02:12I also thought that Drake Mays did have an option to hit Kendrick Ford on a seam route
02:16and said he kind of went backside, looked like he didn't like the first thing he saw,
02:19tried to get to his third read.
02:21By then he was already taken down.
02:22But really, I mean, the fact that he's able to manipulate defenders, dude, we saw the
02:26in-game progress where maybe if it comes up in the mailbag, I'll talk about it, but
02:30like the DeMario Douglas connection, it was like at least once a quarter, he tried to
02:34hit pop on some intermediate in-breaker.
02:36Obviously, you had the interception.
02:38You had him this wide on third down.
02:40Then second half, you have the throw where it's behind pop, but he does connect.
02:44And then finally, obviously, he hits pop perfectly in stride for a touchdown, just being able
02:49to see him make those progressions through the game.
02:52So I thought a lot of the things we saw, the fact the pressure rate went down about like
02:56five or 10% based on what it was under Jacoby Brissett.
03:00We knew that Drake did a better job, one, avoiding pressure just naturally, but also
03:04getting the ball out of the sands faster.
03:05I think you saw that where when he liked what he saw, he usually threw it.
03:09And when he didn't, usually I thought when he used his legs, he did it wisely and either,
03:13you know, said, I don't like this because there's a cover two corner that may pick off
03:17this out route.
03:18I'm just going to run it or I'm going to try to extend the play.
03:20And we saw that that worked in the Patriots' favor a bunch of times.
03:23So there was a lot to like from Drake, man.
03:25Obviously the things that it was the whole package, like the things you were worried
03:28about about Drake, you saw, but those were so small compared to all the positives thought
03:32he was better in the quick game than I actually expected.
03:34So really impressive performance from the rookie.
03:37And I think he going to get Patriots fans a reason to tune in every Sunday, as long
03:41as the defense does its job.
03:43But you know, we'll talk about that maybe in an episode tomorrow and maybe touch on
03:46it later today.
03:47Yeah, for sure.
03:48I think what we'll hit on the defense, obviously letting up 41 points is not great and you're
03:51not going to win football games like that, even when your offense scores 21.
03:55But let's leave, like you said today, we'll do offense, we'll do Drake May.
03:59We'll talk about the offensive line because, you know, you mentioned that the pressure
04:03rate goes down.
04:04I think a little bit obviously has to do with Ben Brown having a solid game at center versus
04:08what Nick LaBrette did last week, where he led, basically he broke the PFF machine and
04:13had the most pressures ever from the interior offensive line.
04:16So I do think a part of that is some improvements up front and part of it is also May's ability
04:20to run around and scramble and, you know, avoid pressure and make things happen with
04:24his legs and help everybody out in that regard.
04:27So let's break it down, Taylor.
04:28Let's look at, it was, I keep talking about the wedding and missing the game, but I mentioned
04:33I was out in the first half and then we went back to get ready for the wedding.
04:36I walk in my hotel room, we had the game on, and as soon as I walked in the door, Booty
04:41was running under the football and scoring a touchdown at the end of the second half.
04:44I was like, Oh my God, and I'm reading in our, in our backend that the press box vibes
04:52were pretty high too.
04:53How electric was the K Sean Booty touchdown when that, cause was that in the, was that
04:57in the press box under the opposite?
04:59That was the opposite.
05:00Okay.
05:01But I had to stop myself from cheering just like naturally.
05:05I was like, Oh my God, a deep touchdown from the Patriots.
05:08We kind of went like this and then literally pulled myself back down.
05:11So I texted people behind me, I'm like, I don't want to be in a hole.
05:15So I made sure Jackson didn't really hold it in quite as well.
05:19He definitely let out a little squeal, but you can tell that people were like, loud and
05:25Gillette.
05:26I have no idea.
05:29Both of the times that Bailey's happy, like had his multiple touchdown games were both
05:32on the road.
05:34So really, I don't remember the last time, maybe the Eagles game last season that we
05:37saw quarterback play that was actually exciting to some degree.
05:39So yeah, no, the press box was also quite electric.
05:42Yeah.
05:43The last time I remember the Patriots, the press box having a buzz and it was, it was
05:46the Bailey's Abby Mac Jones game against the bears where Zabi came in and threw a touchdown
05:51and it was like, Oh, like what's going on?
05:53Maybe this is the real guy here, but obviously, obviously nothing like what we had with Brady.
05:57All right.
05:58But I'm talking about the K Sean Booty, the K Sean Booty touchdown, because we're going
06:01to break down.
06:02Taylor's going to break down the drive that led up to it because may obviously had not
06:06just that long touchdown to booty, but multiple plays before it, that led to that.
06:09So Taylor, if you want to pull it up and we can go through that and quickly break that
06:13down before we get into some of our questions from the audience.
06:16Yep.
06:17One sec.
06:18Let me just pull it up.
06:19Yeah.
06:20All right.
06:21Now.
06:22All right.
06:23So this is after the two yard run.
06:24Right now I'm sitting there watching the game, but I'm thinking, I swear this coaching staff
06:29for like the third time in five weeks decide, you know what, we're going to be bold and
06:34try to make a play at an end of half situation, knowing that this was another game where the
06:38offense, they didn't really have a ton of juice at this point.
06:40Even Drake may admitted that he felt like he was, you know, he said he was going to
06:43be nervous all the way going back to our press conference with him.
06:46And he said he was a little amped up.
06:48We saw that on the interception.
06:49There were some, even the first drop back that he had felt like you threw it away a
06:52little prematurely.
06:53So they didn't have a ton of momentum.
06:55It wasn't until this drive that we really saw the offense show some fight and on this
06:59first place.
07:00So this is second and eight.
07:01I'm thinking, all right, they ran down a good amount of time.
07:04They're probably just going to run this and try to get in the halftime, right?
07:06Absolutely not.
07:07Because when you have Drake may, things are a little more in your favor than they are
07:10in the Jacoby reset.
07:11No disrespect.
07:12He did his best, but just the dynamic athleticism for Drake may really put them over the edge
07:17in this one.
07:18Mike, can you get rid of that banner for me also before I start?
07:20Yeah.
07:21All right.
07:22So I'm going to run this through really quickly.
07:23This is an impressive rep from Drake may, where he makes a full field read from left
07:27to right and finds the Mario Douglas on the opposite side of the field from the hash.
07:31He's on to Mario Douglas.
07:33As you can say, makes a great play showing balance on the sideline, turn it into an explosive
07:37game.
07:38So starting out Patriots in a two by two formation here, condensed with all the receivers inside
07:43the numbers, the Texans are going to counter this with a middle, middle field open look.
07:48All right.
07:49So split safeties right here.
07:50We're expecting from this look, probably going to be some kind of quarter quarter half or
07:54sometime to split zone.
07:56So what they're running is in fact a quarter quarter half.
07:59So what we're going to see is the half here to the boundary.
08:02We're going to have this safety play in the deep half.
08:04This a cornerback is really playing as a cloud corner, trying to get anything in the flat
08:09or maybe something in intermediate sideline.
08:11Then you're going to have quarters technique here.
08:13Everybody underneath here is playing in zone coverage.
08:16The Patriots are going to be running high, low concepts to both sides of the field on
08:21the boundary.
08:22They're going to be running what's called the smash concept, which is a high low towards
08:26the boundary.
08:27This is going to be where Drake may actually start his progression.
08:30To the other side, we've got another kind of high, low, you can kind of call this one
08:33a sucker.
08:34I've mentioned this before, where the goal is to try to put this defender here in a conflict.
08:38So where, okay, if he decides he's going to take the underneath route, we throw right
08:42behind his head.
08:43Similar to when we broke down Jayvon Baker's high, low catch against the Eagles.
08:47Then you're going to have Jameichael hasty right here going late to the flat after he
08:51helps out in blitz pickup.
08:53But as I said, DeMario Douglas is going to be the receiver here.
08:56So he's running even out kind of a whip type of route, or he's going to be the underneath
09:00option right here.
09:02So let's play this play.
09:04So we get the quick drop back from Drake may you see he's looking left, right?
09:08He wants this high, low concept.
09:10This cornerback does a great job.
09:11What it's called mid pointing these two routes where he could close to the shallow route
09:16if he wants to, or he could keep getting depth and end up taking this intermediate option
09:21or downfield option.
09:22So Drake may quickly sees this notice before he's really done with the drop.
09:26He's already bringing his eyes to the other side of the field, right?
09:29So we get one bounce.
09:30He looks at this intermediate option on the other side, sees that one defender is buzzing
09:34under it.
09:35And this quarter safety is coming down on the route to try to take it away.
09:39He says, no problem.
09:40I'll keep going through my progression.
09:41But the tough part is look at that right edge.
09:44He's got a path treasure bearing down on him right now.
09:47He doesn't care.
09:48He knows he's got heat coming, but he also knows that DeMario Douglas, because this defenders
09:52back is to him, is probably going to be open because this guy is just gaining depth.
09:57Drake's going to get this out.
09:59Look also the platform that he's on right now.
10:01He's not stepping into this throw because the rushers bearing down on him.
10:04He really can't move all the way, get his hips aligned and follow through on this flow
10:08on this throw router.
10:10So again, you see DeMario Douglas, plenty of space here in the flat.
10:14Drake may makes a great throw from the opposite hash, hits him with velocity, gives DeMario
10:20Douglas an opportunity to make a big play afterwards.
10:23Really impressive stuff there from Drake may again, to be able to make that throw.
10:27You don't really, you didn't really see that a ton from Jacoby percent.
10:30He's making those throws to the flat from the opposite hash shows the arm strength shows
10:34the arm talent and flexibility for may to be able to make the throw from that platform
10:38and the processing to go from the left side and to go, I don't want to go there getting
10:42to the right, understanding the intermediate route that you want is taken away and then
10:46getting your check down before the pass rush could close it.
10:49The ability to quickly run through your reads like that from left, it wasn't a half field
10:53read.
10:54It was a full field read.
10:55He goes from the left quickly to the right, moves himself over bang and the way he just,
10:58he doesn't move his feet and he just kind of spins his hips and chucks it out there
11:00right on the money is perfect.
11:02That's like, that's a, that is objectively like elite level quarterbacking really fast.
11:06So that's good.
11:07That's, that's exciting.
11:08He stands in there too, with the pressure coming down on his face.
11:11And you can see also on the play that he does at least make an effort to try to flip his
11:15eyes and his hips and make sure that they're in sync when he couldn't.
11:18He still had the physical ability to make the throw accurately and on time again with
11:23velocity.
11:24That's the big part because if he sails this thing, then DeMario Douglas might get tackled
11:28because there's more time to get to the ball.
11:30That thing was on a line, got right to pop, allowed him to show his ability after the
11:34catch.
11:35I thought that was a really great play.
11:36Yeah, it's good.
11:37All right.
11:38Next one is the drop curl, the drop curl, the Jalen Polk, right?
11:41Yes, sir.
11:42So this was one of the plays from Drake Maywell.
11:45He showed what he could do against the blitz and the Texans really throughout the game.
11:49Same strategy is teams have been using against Jacoby reset.
11:52They said, you know what?
11:53We're going to send the blitz play man coverage on you.
11:55Let's see if you can actually beat us.
11:56Now this one isn't in coverage, but it is a blitz.
12:00So I'm going to run this through really quick.
12:02Like you said, this is a drop curl from Polk.
12:04Unfortunately, we'll talk about him more a little bit after the plane, which Rodney had
12:07to say about him, but another good example of Drake may getting through his reads and
12:11delivering an accurate ball.
12:14So once again, we've got a middle field open structure, no safety in the middle of the
12:18field.
12:19So you're thinking some kind of split safety zone.
12:20The Patriots this time are in an empty formation.
12:22They have three receivers to the field, two to the top, and then you're going to have
12:26a tight end on one wing and then Jamichael hasty on the other to chip on the edges and
12:30give the offensive tackles a little bit of help because this is a downfield concept.
12:35Then this is kind of a funky coverage from the Texans.
12:38Now to the field, they're playing pretty much a quarters technique.
12:42It looks like from the safeties where this guy is going to read the deepest route outside.
12:46This guy is going to bounce on anything that's vertical that goes inside.
12:50And then this defender who's on the line of scrimmage, this mug defender is going to drop
12:54back into cover to try to take away any vertical route from this side of the field to the opposite
12:59side or to the boundary.
13:01We're basically going to get man coverage technique where you can already see this defender
13:05has eyes over his hips.
13:07He's kind of squared up.
13:08He's going to have basically an off man coverage technique.
13:11This linebacker is going to be in man coverage against a Michael hasty.
13:14Now the tricky part here is that the Texans are actually sending a defensive back blitz
13:18from both sides.
13:19You have one from the safety who's going to trickle down and blitz this edge.
13:23And then you also have Jalen Petrie who's shaded just outside of the point of the bunch.
13:29He's going to blitz from this edge.
13:31Now this was impressive because Drake is going to make this throw with that safety barreling
13:35down looking right at him unblocked and this is going to be really impressive.
13:39So the Patriots route formation is going to be three curls, right?
13:42You have two on the outside, one over the middle, and then you're going to have the
13:46chips like I said, and then these guys, the running back and tight end, they're going
13:49to release to the flat just in case all the other routes are covered up, get it to your
13:53short receiver, see if they can get out of bounds or make a big play.
13:56So as you can see, Jalen Petrie blitzing right here, this safety is coming from depth, right?
14:01So you're hoping that they can hold onto the ball enough or the coverage will do well enough
14:05on the back end that the safety can get there and maybe affect the play.
14:09Drake may in his drop back.
14:11He already sees before he's finished his drop that this dropping defender has eyes and is
14:15buzzing under pops route and then this safety, it's not a literal bracket, but the way it
14:20plays out is essentially a bracket where you're going to see he would be taking anything that
14:24pop rain that broke outside.
14:26He's taking anything that breaks inside and as we know, it's a sit route, not really great
14:30against the defender who's already underneath it.
14:32So Drake sees that moves along, starts going to the right side of the field again while
14:36he's still in his drop back.
14:38So he's getting through these things quickly, but not too quickly.
14:41Now you have this safety.
14:43Once again, there's no one to block him.
14:44So Drake may knows, Hey, I probably get the ball out here because if I don't, this dude
14:48is going to bury me, maybe break my damn ribs.
14:51So Drake may is going to see and make an anticipatory throw because Jalen Polk is trying to initiate
14:56contact to try to see if he can use that to create some separation.
15:00Drake may shows the anticipation, letting this one go as folks getting out of his route.
15:05The ball go hits poke right in the hands on time, throw.
15:10Just can't reel it in.
15:11Unfortunately.
15:12Got to come down with it.
15:13Yeah.
15:14So what, I don't know if you wanted to mention it later, but what did Gerard Mayo exactly
15:16say after the game about Jalen Polk and the drop issue?
15:18Yeah.
15:19So after the second drop that Polk had in this game, you know, we've kind of touched
15:23on it in other episodes where I mentioned that I thought that there were some catches
15:26he probably could have made.
15:28Sometimes the defender will punch it out, but I'm like, you're Jalen Polk, man.
15:30Like you got to make the throws that come to you because you're not a guy who's really
15:33known for creating separation.
15:36So what, what Gerard Mayo said was he actually singled out the three receivers to him that
15:40actually stand out when he watched his tape.
15:42He mentioned pop Douglas.
15:43He mentioned Keishon Booty, who's obviously on the rise and has really taken on the top
15:48receiver role.
15:49And he mentioned he had first said KJ Osborne corrected himself because he misspoke and
15:53went back and said it was Kendrick Bourne.
15:55Did not mention Jalen Polk.
15:57Somebody asked him about that.
15:58How was Jalen Polk been performing?
16:00And I said, after that second drop again, then I think Jalen Polk may have a bit of
16:03a drops problem.
16:05He said, Jalen Polk is in some kind of funk right now where he said, he's got to get out
16:09of it.
16:10I think that's the reason that you're seeing Keishon Booty's reps are going up and in those
16:14two receivers sets, I'll get more into this later, but you saw Kendrick Bourne, not Jalen
16:18Polk.
16:19So he's starting to get phased out of the offense a little bit.
16:21He still had a role.
16:22He was there like really number, he played the second most snaps, but in the packages,
16:26the way he was deployed more like he was their third receiver and like they're trying to
16:30keep phasing Kendrick Bourne in like we know last week, he didn't have a full snap count.
16:33So yeah, Jalen Polk, apparently not really making the coaching staff very happy.
16:38Nothing I'd panic about either.
16:40No one's panicking, don't panic about Jalen Polk.
16:43These guys are in their first year, their heads are probably spinning.
16:45They're catching passes from two different quarterbacks, hopefully now more from Drake.
16:50But you have to be able to have some patience with these young guys because receiver in
16:54the NFL is not easy.
16:55They're plenty talented.
16:57Polk was even asked to kind of fill a role with that X spot that he's not really great
17:00at to begin with.
17:01He was just really the most confident person they had for a while.
17:04So needs to be better, but plenty of room for him to continue to grow.
17:07All right.
17:08What's next on the touchdown drop, Taylor?
17:09Yes, sir.
17:10So this time we actually have a defensive pass interference drawn from none other than
17:15DeMario Douglas in this slot.
17:17So good.
17:18I swear this dude is a flag magnet.
17:19I think he drew two flags in this game and we've seen plenty of other games where like
17:23it's kind of like when it rains, it pours with pop because when he draws flags, it's
17:26usually multiple like that Bill's game or to Ron Johnson.
17:29He just had him in.
17:31So this play, this is the first time we're actually going to see middle field closed,
17:35right?
17:36Because Drake may show that he could pick apart their zone coverages.
17:39So then they said, you know what?
17:40We're just going to play man to man.
17:41We don't respect your receivers.
17:43Drake may hadn't been thrown down the field.
17:45What reason do we have to be afraid of your passing game, which is totally fair.
17:49So once again, middle field close coverage, the Texans against his two by two set are
17:54in man across the board.
17:55You see it.
17:56Everybody who pretty much can be pressed up by alignment is pressed up for the.
18:01And then you're also going to have this mug linebacker blitz, right?
18:03So five man rush man across the board showing very little respect for the Patriots passing
18:08offense.
18:09Now this concept, once again, you're going to have curls on the outside.
18:13You're going to have the tight end here chip before he releases into the flat.
18:16Again, trying to give Zach Thomas a little bit of help against a great edge rusher.
18:20And then you're going to have DeMario Douglas with the key route running in over the middle.
18:25Now let's run this real slow motion.
18:27So one, two, three, step five, step top.
18:30I'm sorry from Drake May.
18:31As soon as he gets to the top of his drop to Monterey, Jacobs has lost on the pass rush
18:36and you got a rusher barreling down on Drake May.
18:39Now he's going to try to kind of drift away from this, but he sees the pop.
18:42Douglas is about to get open.
18:44Tries to buy just enough time with that drift to give himself time to throw it to pop.
18:49Let's it go.
18:50But you see pop kind of gets mugged at the top of the route and then draws the fast interference
18:54flag.
18:55Not going to dwell on this, but I'm just going to show you guys one more angle because the
18:58end zone does all this much more do.
19:00So once again, to Monterey, Jacobs against the Neil Hunter tries to get that one arm
19:04to shove him, create some contact, slow down the rush and maybe force him around the edge.
19:09Neil Hunter though, he's a veteran.
19:10He's going to take that hand, get around the edge with the rip.
19:15And then again, he's taking control of Jacob's wrist and swatting it down to create some
19:18space around the corner.
19:20Then you're going to see once again, Drake may kind of drifting as the rushers bearing
19:24down on him.
19:25Then you're going to see pop Douglas right here.
19:27You see the tug at the top of the route when he tries to separate.
19:30And then the guys all over him at the top, that's going to be a penalty every single
19:33time.
19:34I like his ability to feel the rush really fast though, obviously.
19:38And then to be able to give pop a chance, not only to actually catch the ball, then
19:42he's able to, instead of like, if he didn't, if he didn't try and get that football there,
19:45they don't get the PI and then they're just back where they're started and they take a
19:48sack.
19:49But yeah, that's good stuff for me.
19:51I like, I like his ability to use his legs and freelance isn't the right word, but more
19:57so like his ability to play off platform makes it, um, I guess like not as annoying that
20:05he doesn't have the best footwork and that he's not going to always step into his doors
20:08because he can do that.
20:09And he can, he knows he can get the ball there.
20:10We saw it on the first play on that conclusion.
20:12All right.
20:13We talked about the touchdown to Mario Douglas.
20:15That was another throw kind of like against the jets where he throws that route and he's
20:19not really aligned, but he still manages to lead tomorrow Douglas into that second
20:23window.
20:24It was the same thing where his hips are kind of pointed a little bit to the right as he's
20:27making this throw.
20:28That's going left.
20:29And it's just like with that kind of arm talent, like you said, he doesn't need a perfect base.
20:32That's like Aaron Rodgers.
20:33He didn't need to have a speed set.
20:36He literally could be jumping in the air and throw across his body and still make an accurate
20:40throw.
20:41Now he seemed TC McCartney told us way back in the spring and in the summer, Drake's going
20:45to have plenty of opportunities to throw off platform and show what he can do naturally.
20:49So you want to see him do the right things on schedule when there isn't heat.
20:52Kendrick Bourne actually did give him credit saying, Hey, when he was under pressure, he
20:55was doing the same things that he's done in practice.
20:57So that was a really cool thing to hear if your tackle is not that way.
21:01First of all, thank you so much to you for the tip.
21:03If your tackle is not that good, why not ship?
21:06We will get into that later because I think somebody asked in the mailbag.
21:09So very good question.
21:10D thank you for the for the very kind tip.
21:13We will touch on that later though.
21:14Don't you worry now?
21:15This is the fourth play in the sequence.
21:18This is going to be a slant to pop really nothing crazy here, but one, I like the fact
21:22that pop was able to beat lab to beat the defenders inside leverage on an inside route.
21:27And then Drake Mays ability to put it on him, not with perfect accuracy, but throw a catchable
21:32ball to Mario Douglas with some heat in his lap.
21:35So you see the pocket gets moved back pretty quickly.
21:38Still the Mario Douglas was a great job stabbing the ball.
21:41Also there was, I think an illegal hands in the face or something against the tight end
21:45at the bottom, but we're not going to talk about that.
21:47So once again, we have man across the board.
21:49You can see it.
21:50Middlefield close.
21:51We have an open look this time with the tight end as the number three right there.
21:54And then the coverage is going to be once again, that man covers the only person who's
21:59an off is your Michael hasty because he's being covered by a linebacker, which tells
22:03Drake may that's your coverage indicator.
22:05These dudes are playing man and they're really not trying to hide it once again.
22:09Another play where the mug linebacker is going to be rushing the pastor.
22:12So you have a five man rush, create one on one's up front on the line of scrimmage, or
22:16it makes it easier to create stunt situations and try to confuse the offensive line.
22:21Now this is going to be an all slants concept.
22:23Personally, I don't like these because I think you see how there's all these routes breaking
22:28in the middle of the field at the same time.
22:29I can't stand that.
22:31Some of these West coast principles, I know other coaches do a better job disguising them
22:35sometimes, but some of the concepts are just like, I don't like the way they look.
22:38I think they could do a better job creating space, but this is a staple and it's going
22:42to work out here for the Patriots.
22:43So this is one of those times where I wish that sometimes Jacoby percent locked in onto
22:48Mario Douglas and man covered situations.
22:50Like I don't care where the matchup is or where you read supposed to be.
22:53If you have pop one on one, you hit him.
22:55And this is a good reason why, because as you can see, he's running the slant route
22:59that Drake may is going to be keying in on, but his defender is lined up inside of him.
23:04So Drake, I'm sorry.
23:05So pop is going to have to make sure that he can get that defender to create some room
23:09inside and then went on the route.
23:11I know it's all slants.
23:12This is technically an in, but whatever.
23:13That's always something I thought was kind of funny with this concept.
23:15All right.
23:16So DeMario Douglas eats cushion, gets on the defender's heels, and then this guy's going
23:20to try to jam him tomorrow.
23:23Pop is going to do a good job, as you can see, getting off that jam, using his hand
23:28to swipe it down and then still maintaining that separation.
23:32As the ball comes, he's going to stab it in the air.
23:35High point that thing again, Drake, he's kind of got some pressure in his lap, as you can
23:39see right here, isn't really able to step into the throw the way he wants.
23:43Instead of going forward here, you see how Drake takes a step back here again.
23:47You don't want that.
23:48So it's not a perfect throw.
23:49It is high.
23:50But DeMario Douglas, great ball skills, goes up to get it, makes the catch in traffic.
23:54Pretty straightforward.
23:55Nothing crazy on that play.
23:56But I do like the execution there from DeMario Douglas.
23:59And it shows once again why Drake May was kind of locking in on him during that drive.
24:03Just one of the one of the many catches from DeMario Douglas on his NFL coming out party.
24:07First touchdown, nine catches for 92 or something like that, or eight catches, I want to say.
24:12Something like that.
24:13So a handful of catches for quite a few yards.
24:15Yeah.
24:16All right.
24:17Let's get to the booty bomb.
24:19Let's finish it off with Keyshawn Booty's touchdown.
24:22Yes, sir.
24:23Let's get to that booty bomb.
24:24All right.
24:25Throwing this through one more time.
24:27We all know what's coming.
24:29Let's just sit back and enjoy this.
24:31Longest throw for the Patriots, according to NextGenStats, in the past three seasons.
24:34But are we surprised?
24:37Absolutely not.
24:38Are we surprised that it's Keyshawn Booty at the receiving end of this?
24:41Absolutely not.
24:43I am on Derrick Stingley, though.
24:45I mean, that was incredible.
24:47Which is incredible.
24:48And he actually mentioned that he does have a decent feel for Stingley Booty because Derrick
24:53Stingley was at LSU when Keyshawn Booty was a freshman and a sophomore.
24:56So he did mention that he was familiar with Derek Stingley's game.
25:00But again, not surprised that Keyshawn Booty can do this kind of thing.
25:03He's always had the ability.
25:04He's had the utmost confidence in himself going back to last year and in the press conference
25:08after the game.
25:09He's like, I catch everything.
25:11I know I can do this.
25:12Does he catch everything?
25:13Probably not.
25:14But I think he does have, maybe after Polk and maybe Hunter Henry, the best hands on
25:18the team.
25:19So let's break this one down.
25:21Again, middle field close.
25:23Stop me if you've heard this one before.
25:24But this time, the Patriots are in a three-by-one formation with Jalen Polk as the isolated
25:29receiver.
25:30And as you see, this safety is shaded a little bit.
25:33I think they know that in these three-by-one looks, Drake May likes that one-on-one matchup.
25:37So it seems like in this single high man coverage, again, across the board, the only
25:42guy who's not going to end up in man is this linebacker because Jermichael Hasty stays
25:45in to protect.
25:46But he's really defending this entire half of the field.
25:49He's defending the short side because he doesn't think that Drake May is going to throw to
25:52the Z receiver on the outside this way.
25:54That's going to be a mistake on his part because the Patriots, oh, I'm sorry.
25:58Also got a note here.
26:00There's going to be two different blitzes.
26:02One from this edge defender, but also, or from this mug linebacker, apologies, but also
26:07from this linebacker because he's going to see Jermichael Hasty in protection.
26:10I think it's a green dog.
26:11A green dog is when the linebacker or whoever's in charge of protection sees the man coverage
26:17assignment is blocking, and they say, I'm just going to add myself to the rush because
26:21I'm not just going to stand here and do nothing.
26:23Now, the route concept for the Patriots is going to be verticals from both outside receivers
26:29with the slant from Demario Douglas, and then tight ends going to chip and release to the
26:33flat.
26:34Now, from the press box, there were 16 seconds left.
26:38I'm just not used to seeing successful beat bombs like this from the Patriots, so I'm
26:41thinking Demario Douglas gets wide open on this play, and I'm thinking at the time, oh,
26:47he undressed the guy.
26:48You know, Drake's going to hit him over the middle.
26:50Maybe Pop can go and make the safety miss and it's a touchdown, or they just get closer
26:54to field goal range.
26:55They have two timeouts.
26:56He's just going to hit Pop.
26:57I didn't expect this throw to be what it was, but I'm so glad it was because gosh darn,
27:01this was freaking cool.
27:02All right, so really straightforward.
27:04Drake gets the top of his drop, lets this go, but look how long it's in the air, right?
27:09This is the key to the play because he puts so much air under this that it gives Boo to
27:14the opportunity because right now, you know, he's stacked, right?
27:17He's not really leaving yet, but because Drake put so much air under this, Stingley, as you
27:22can see, is going to turn around because he thinks he's in good position.
27:25So he's looking for the ball to try to make a play on it, but when you're looking backwards,
27:29you're not running as fast.
27:30And when another guy is behind you and he's tracking the ball already, it puts him at
27:35the advantage.
27:36So because this moon ball from Drake May just doesn't come down until Booty's in the end
27:41zone, it gives him that extra edge to be able to actually stack the defensive back, haul
27:46this one in for a long touchdown.
27:49Great concentration from Gayshaun Booty.
27:51Also you can't see it in this angle, but it was cool.
27:52You had the lineman like Ben Brown sprinted into the end zone to congratulate him.
27:57Mike and what he made his way down there.
27:59This was one of the coolest plays.
28:00I think we've seen as Patriots fans in quite some time.
28:02That was awesome.
28:03And you look at too, Stingley plays decent technique early on and doesn't allow Booty
28:09to keep him.
28:10What'd you say?
28:11I'll throw it back up.
28:12Yeah, no, just because Booty, in theory, wants to give himself a ton of space on the sideline
28:17so that Drake can have space to throw him, and he doesn't.
28:19Stingley presses him against the sideline pretty good, but then the way he puts it over
28:22the top and not towards the sideline, right there, he turns around and then he just beats
28:27him forward, bang, touchdown, nice and easy.
28:30Like North Carolina Drake May, where he's just kind of having a field day out there,
28:33just dropping bombs on people.
28:34And that's the stuff, right?
28:36That's the stuff we talked about.
28:38That's the stuff we...
28:39This is the types of throws that we know this guy can make day in, day out, week in and
28:43week out.
28:44And this is why we're so damn excited about the guy, because we haven't had a ton of quarterback
28:47play like this here for a long time, certainly since Brady left, but the ability to match
28:51that with the athleticism on the run and making plays with the speed and things like that,
28:57it's good.
28:58So Brady was super excited to see that make this play, and Keyshawn Booty, too.
29:02He's been balling out lately, so good on him.
29:04Shout out Keyshawn Booty for doing his thing yesterday.
29:07And also, I think Drake May had, what was it, the most passing yards and touchdowns
29:10against the Texans defense this season?
29:11Yes, he did.
29:12Yeah, I'm pretty sure he was the first quarterback to throw for over 200 yards against the Texans
29:16this season.
29:17There we go.
29:18I went on NBC Sports Boston, too, before this game.
29:22I was on with Phil and he was asking what my stat line was going to be for this game.
29:26And you know me, I'm good with numbers.
29:29So I didn't know what he was going to average out.
29:30I'm just like, I'm seeing in my head, I think it's going to be like 22 for 25, or like,
29:35it was either 17 for 22 or 22 for 25.
29:38I think it was 17 for 22 or something like that.
29:39And he was going to throw for 220 yards, two touchdowns and a pick.
29:43I was so close.
29:44I was so close.
29:45Not bad.
29:46Three touchdowns was better than that.
29:47One interception was freaking fugazi.
29:48I only put one of those on, so.
29:50I was going to say, one of the interceptions wasn't on him, and then, yes, he did have
29:53three turnovers.
29:54He had the strip sack, but we were talking about it before we came on air.
29:57Sometimes that's not all the quarterback's fault.
29:58It's just a guy comes around, you're trying to make a play, and you get yourself stripped.
30:02But overall, a good day, a great drive there from Drake May and stuff that Patriots fans
30:08and the Patriots themselves can hang their hat on because they have a quarterback.
30:11All right, we're already a half hour into the show, Taylor.
30:13So let's talk about prize picks, and then we'll get to some fan questions out there
30:17before we wrap this thing up.

30:56And they put their members first with all withdrawals being safe, fast, and secure.
31:01When your picks hit, you get your money in as quick as 15 minutes.
31:05Our past Daily Picks, Taylor, we talked about it when I quickly called in from the cocktail
31:11hour.
31:12Unfortunately, they did not hit last week, but we have a new one coming on my Twitter.
31:16Make sure you check it out for tonight's primetime game, Patriots, not Patriots, Jets versus
31:20Bills and AFC East matchup.
31:22So check it out.
31:23We'll try and win some more with Prize Picks.
31:25So sign up today, download the app, and use code CLNS to get $50 instantly after you play
31:31your first $5 lineup.
31:32Again, that's code CLNS to get $50 instantly.
31:36All you got to do is play five bucks on Prize Picks.
31:38Prize Picks, run your game.
31:41All righty, Taylor.
31:43Let's get in to the mailbag.
31:47I got it loaded up in a minute.
31:50All right, let's talk about Ben Brown.
31:51You just mentioned him on that final play.
31:54What did you think of his performance?
31:56Because obviously, Derek, David Andrews goes down.
31:59He's out for the season, going with Nick Leverett.
32:02So we thought he was the guy last week, and then Leverett's banged up this week.
32:06Ben Brown comes in, has a pretty solid game, and Nick Leverett ends up getting released
32:10by the Patriots this afternoon.
32:11So it looks like, at least for the short term, they're going to go with Ben Brown down the
32:14middle.
32:15What did you see from him, number 77, on Sunday afternoon?
32:18I mean, Gerard Mayo said he was the best offensive lineman on the field yesterday after watching
32:22the tape, and it's hard for me to disagree.
32:24Honestly, it was up and down all over the place.
32:26Like obviously, Zach Thomas was in a tough position, but Darion Lowe left early, although
32:30he was looking pretty good early on.
32:32Michael Jordan, Barry, up and down this game, wasn't as good as what I thought he was last
32:35week.
32:36Mike Nguyen, who had a down performance, really, in the run game.
32:38I thought that he wasn't as consistent as he usually is.
32:41Pass protection had more lapses than you'd like to see.
32:44And then Demetre Jacobs, we know he's in a tough spot.
32:46The guy was against two of the best edge rushers in the entire NFL.
32:49Obviously, he had his struggles, but also had some solid reps.
32:51But Ben Brown didn't allow a single pressure yesterday.
32:54And we got beat a couple times, and in the run game, he wasn't always perfect.
32:58But the physicality that he brought was notable.
33:01You see the toughness.
33:02He's the kind of guy who kind of shoves you, gives you a little chicken arm at the end
33:04of plays, where he's trying to assert himself and make his presence known.
33:07He's got some physicality.
33:09He's not the fleetest of foot.
33:11That's one thing.
33:12He's not necessarily quick or necessarily very fast or conventionally athletic, like
33:16more of a Nick Levret or a Cole Strange type, where if he's late on a stun or something
33:22like that, it's going to be hard for him to recover.
33:23If a guy beats him with quickness or something like that, that's going to put him in a tough
33:27spot.
33:28This is an explosive Texans interior.
33:30They're not the most talented, so it wasn't the staunchest test he's going to see.
33:34But I thought he held up really well.
33:36The way he found line games and really muddied up the pocket to give Drake Mays space I thought
33:41was impressive.
33:42He didn't get walked back as often as I've seen from David Andrews and Nick Levret at
33:45times this season.
33:46And also just the fact that he was able to execute multiple different blocking schemes.
33:50He pulled at times.
33:51He was able to be on double teams.
33:53He got to the second level.
33:54So I mean, Nick Levret, it stinks.
33:57I know he worked his butt off.
33:58I think part of the reason that he wound up getting cut, I'm guessing maybe it was partially
34:03due to injury, because I know people were like, Patriots can't afford to get rid of
34:06offensive line.
34:07I'm like, what the hell are they thinking?
34:09Why would you get rid of one?
34:10We know he was dealing with an ankle, allowed 10 pressures against the 49ers.
34:14Maybe those had something to do with each other.
34:16I don't know for sure.
34:17I'm just trying to do the math in my head.
34:19Yeah, right, right, right.
34:20He surprised everyone.
34:21But yeah, I was impressed by Ben Brown.
34:24I really was.
34:25If he's the center moving forward, maybe in a competition with Cole Strange, relative
34:29to the situation the Patriots were in, I'd be pretty excited about it.
34:33And he was awesome when we interviewed him as well.
34:35The ability to, look, he practiced in Vegas with the Raiders on Wednesday, and he was
34:40claimed by the Patriots, or he was signed off their practice squad on Thursday, practiced
34:44with them for two days, and becomes their starting center.
34:47That's incredible for anybody.
34:49Like, look, he had a great day, even if he had a bad day, his ability to come in, and
34:53at least under, and there's that play that you were talking about where he should have
34:56hit pop across the middle, but then he just drops it over, over, stingingly from the touchdown.
35:00I watched that through the first time.
35:02I was like, why the hell are you not throwing it down the field?
35:04But it was for six.
35:05So yeah, no, but Brown's ability to come in here on two days, two days notice and start
35:10a full game is incredible and very impressive stuff.
35:12Hopefully, he can only build on that and continue going.
35:16All right, Taylor, let's talk about the wide receivers.
35:18We mentioned Polk a little bit, but does it sort of seem like we have our top four here?
35:24Pop, KB, Polk, and Keyshawn Booty.
35:26Osborne fades out a little bit.
35:28No Javon Baker or Tyquan Thornton, obviously.
35:30So you think they're going to stick with these four?
35:32You kind of moving forward this year?
35:34I do.
35:35I don't know if Tyquan Thornton's done enough.
35:38We've seen the role dwindle.
35:39Now, I was hoping that we'd see some deep shots to him because he's never had a quarterback
35:43on this roster who could exploit his speed and deep ability like Drake May.
35:49But the fact that they're not putting him on the field tells me that maybe behind the
35:52scenes, he's just not showing them quite enough.
35:54And it seems like this team is very serious about riding the hot hand at receiver.
35:57And I like it.
35:58I honestly, it's been cool to see how each week different guys are earning more and more
36:02reps.
36:03So let me break down how the reps were divvied up exactly because it was pretty interesting.
36:07So Keyshawn Booty led the team in total snaps among wide receivers.
36:12Now when they were in base groupings where you only had two wide receivers, he was the
36:16X and Kendrick Bourne was typically the Z, right?
36:19So no Jalen Polk again.
36:21Last week it was Jalen Polk is the X and then Keyshawn Booty is the Z.
36:25So they're moving that around a little bit.
36:27Now in three receiver sets, they mix it up a little bit where Jalen Polk was typically
36:31the X in those three receiver sets.
36:33And then you'd have either primarily Keyshawn Booty at the Z.
36:37Sometimes they would have Kendrick Bourne working as well.
36:39That's where he caught one of his screens.
36:40And then DeMario Douglas obviously was a slot receiver.
36:43I think there were like maybe one or two plays where Keyshawn Kendrick and Jalen Polk were
36:48on the field together, but those were very few and far between.
36:51So Keyshawn Booty told us that he was one of the players who they were going to use
36:55an X and Z.
36:56And we saw that he, depending on the personnel grouping they were in, again, three receivers,
37:00he was Z, two receivers, he was X.
37:02Kendrick Bourne seems like someone they want to have on the field as much as possible.
37:06Big uptick for him in snap count, maybe not in production.
37:09Jalen Polk, like we said, he was on the decline.
37:12He's really looks like he's their fourth receiver with DeMario Douglas obviously being the guy
37:16that they have on the field as their number three primarily.
37:19Also something I want to talk about because people were upset that DeMario Douglas isn't
37:23on the field in two receiver sets.
37:25I kind of get that.
37:27But one, it's not this crazy thing that an undersized slot receiver with a history of
37:31concussions isn't on the field during plays where you're primarily going to run.
37:35Like Keyshawn Booty is still good, Kendrick Bourne is still good.
37:38I think as they continue to build rapport, we'll see some more play action and opportunities
37:41to those guys.
37:43But those guys and Jalen Polk, maybe not right now, because one of the things that Mayo called
37:47them out for was the drops and then not blocking as well as they expected, which one of those
37:52things where the rookie, I didn't really want to say anything until it became something
37:55that became too obvious not to say.
37:58And now, you know, Mayo did it for me, so I don't have to be the bad guy.
38:01But yeah, Pop isn't really as good as a blocker because he's smaller and you also don't want
38:06to lose the guy because maybe some defensive back decides, you know what, I'm going to
38:09light this dude up real quick.
38:11And then something happens, you know, so can you get him involved more for sure?
38:14Maybe on some RPOs, maybe on some play actions or like using him in motion.
38:18They did that once with Pop when they were in base personnel.
38:21But yeah, main grouping is going to be Keishon Booty, Kendrick Bourne, Demario Douglas is
38:27at number three, and then Jalen Polk mixing in for three wide receiver sets.
38:31And I think ideally, we talked about it before, or the week Kendrick Bourne came back last
38:35week, where we would love for it to be Polk at X because he's the rookie, he's young.
38:40We want to see him grow alongside Drake May in this offense and then have KB at the Z
38:44and Pop at the F. And I mean, shit, if Keishon Booty is going to play the way he's playing
38:49right now, keep him in the mix, get him going, allow Jalen Polk to figure his stuff out behind
38:54the scenes.
38:55And then if you can work him in as your fourth and he's sort of continuing to grow in that
38:58way and you have Keishon Booty playing the way he's playing, I'm all for it.
39:02First round pick, fifth round pick, second round pick, whatever, like, I don't care.
39:06Get the best guy, get the best three out there in 11 and then you can rotate a guy like Polk
39:11in once he figures out as well.
39:13And speaking of that, like Keishon Booty used to be, was a number one talent.
39:16People thought he was the best receiver in the 2022 class.
39:19So let's not forget about that, like, or 2023 class, I'm sorry.
39:23So like, he's not some scrub, it was really the off-field stuff, but obviously like all
39:27the legal situation is behind him, it seems like he's really running and taking advantage
39:31of this opportunity.
39:32It's been awesome to see.
39:33That's what gets me excited about it because I did love him the year before they drafted
39:38him and then he did fall off a little bit.
39:40Like he had that huge 300 yard game at LSU, I was like, this guy's legit.
39:43And then he had the off-field stuff and that kind of stuff happens.
39:46They take a flyer on him last year.
39:48Obviously the arrest and the gambling charge last year was kind of like, oh boy, like,
39:52here we go.
39:53This is kind of, maybe this is why he fell because you don't know what's going to happen.
39:56But he seemed to clean up his act, at least from what we've seen so far.
39:59And now he's actually playing really good football on top of it.
40:02So kudos to him.
40:03It's exciting to see that they actually maybe hit on both of those six round wide receivers
40:07in DeMario Douglas and Keishon Booty last year.
40:10All right.
40:11I want to go back to the-
40:13Yeah.
40:14You want to talk about offensive line?
40:15Yeah, just for a second because Zach Thomas had to come in for Vardarian Lowe.
40:22Did he show enough to continue getting those reps with the left tackle?
40:24I know that you feel strongly about the offensive line in general and that yes, it's a mess,
40:30but there wasn't much else to do.
40:32And so now they're in this position where they continue to get hurt and get battered
40:37and Jacobs is on the right now and Caden Wallace is on IR, Vardarian Lowe, we don't know what's
40:42going to happen, but he left the game and Zach Thomas was at left tackle.
40:45So what did you see from Zach Thomas?
40:46Do you think that's, I guess, an appropriate filling guy for now or what are they going
40:51to have to do with the position moving forward?
40:53Yeah.
40:54I just don't think Zach Thomas has really the functional strength to be a tackle consistently.
40:58That was one thing that stood out was on run blocks, guys slipped him pretty easily.
41:01He didn't get a ton of push.
41:03One on one, he got walked back a few times.
41:05There was another where he tried to shoot his hands and lost pretty badly.
41:08I think Zach Thomas is doing his best.
41:10He's in a tough position where I think he's really more of a guard, especially a left
41:13guard where you get a little bit more help.
41:15So I don't love him at tackle.
41:16I think if that has to happen again next week, you're going to have to put DeMontre back
41:20on the left.
41:21You're going to have to kick Mike and when you add it right, maybe put city at right
41:24guard.
41:25I think the only reason they didn't do that during the game was because they didn't want
41:27to have to flip everything around because I predicted that that was what was going to
41:31happen.
41:32And then when they just put in Zach Thomas, I'm like, all right, that makes sense because
41:35you don't want all these guys this way all week long.
41:37Just figure it out and reset when you get back to the, or get back to the practice field.
41:42Exactly.
41:43So yeah, I wouldn't like Zach Thomas, even as a filming starter, to be honest, just that
41:46functional strength really stood out to me as a negative, although he did have some positive
41:50reps though.
41:51And that's where I'm just going to really get this out there.
41:53Oh, do we have a question about this that I can go on my rent for specifically the offensive
41:58line?
41:59I didn't, I didn't put that one in.
42:04So I'll let you go on your soapbox now, Taylor, take us through the offensive line.
42:09Yes.
42:10So I tweeted last night that I thought Elliot Wolf deserved more credit than he's gotten
42:14for giving the Patriots, providing them with a somewhat functional offensive line.
42:18And I think Scott Peters, Rob, Rob Kugler, and Mike, I always think Ryan Kugler in my
42:25head and I get them mixed up.
42:27Rob Kugler and Mike McCarthy are doing the Lord's work.
42:30Now I was being, I was embellishing a little bit with the Lord's work, you know, I'm joking
42:33a little bit.
42:34But in all seriousness, I think what they've been able to do, considering the hand that
42:37they've been dealt is pretty incredible.
42:40The fact that I know Drake May played a part of it, Ben Brown played a part of it, but
42:43that's part of the reason where they were still able to find pieces, not just after,
42:48you know, free agency or whatever, but also after roster cuts like DeMontre Jacobs, Zach
42:52Thomas, two guys that they got right after Ray Rosetta played significant snaps for them.
42:57Ben Brown, diamond in the rough, the guy is so good.
42:59You ended up cutting a veteran that you signed to help you on the interior.
43:03And on top of that, people keep saying the Patriots didn't try to fix the offensive line.
43:07And I don't understand that.
43:08Can you debate the way they went about it?
43:11And maybe you disagree with the types of players they got and all that.
43:14I can have a conversation about that.
43:15For me, it's a non-starter to say that they didn't try when they brought in a veteran
43:20in Tukta Korafor, a veteran in Michael Jordan, a veteran in Nick Levret, three guys who played
43:24significant snaps for them.
43:26And then you draft two offensive linemen in the top 105.
43:29And then I keep seeing, you know, I saw a story that Mike Giardi heard from sources
43:32and he's just reporting what he heard, nothing against Mike, but that he heard that the Patriots
43:36basically the sense that what people thought was that they didn't expect to run on tackles
43:40in the second round, sat on their hands and didn't really try to trade up and then just
43:44waited for Caden Wallace.
43:45If you look at the second round tackles though, most of them weren't expected to be guys who
43:50could contribute in year one.
43:51They were all projects.
43:52Wallace was someone where people thought he could maybe be a rotational or spot starter
43:55or something like that.
43:57And you could also argue that not only the experience, but also the kind of players they
44:02wanted weren't super hot commodities.
44:04Like I love Kingsley.
44:05So I'm not, I, I liked Roger Rosengarten as a third rounder.
44:08I love Patrick Paul, Patrick Paul was gone.
44:10And then it started.
44:12And at that point, I think that with Kingsley being a project and he got benched by the
44:15chiefs because he is very raw.
44:18I don't think he was someone that they wanted because they knew that it was going to take
44:21a lot of work.
44:22So I think the sentiment that they were just being lazy and kind of waited for Caden to
44:25fall to them.
44:26I just don't really like that because I think that for what they were going for, would you
44:30like a pure left tackle shirt?
44:31And a lot of those guys were right tackles anyway.
44:33So I don't really get that argument.
44:35So yeah, that's it.
44:36I know that's beats coming up.
44:37We got other questions to get through.
44:38I don't want to hog the show for this, but I think it's very frustrating where if you
44:42wanted them to get a pure left tackle shirt, if you wanted them to sign Jonah Williams,
44:46if he would've even come here, maybe, but to act like Ellie Wolfe was just like, Oh,
44:50Oh, well, you know, let's throw Drake to the wolves when they've lost shook.
44:53So Cora for when the dairy and low can't stay healthy.
44:55When Michael Jordan is miss games, when David Andrews has done for the season, Mike and when
44:59Andrews had to play two different positions, like, I just think it's completely ridiculous
45:03to pretend that they had any idea that all of this was going to happen.
45:06So I think, I think you are on the right.
45:11The idea where you can't debate that they did, you know, they tried to, they tried to
45:15do things.
45:16Now you could argue that they didn't sign the right people, right?
45:18Because what have happened with the core for and Michael Jordan or what have you, Michael
45:22Jordan's been good.
45:23But I mean, the core for thing obviously was a disaster now where we're at, but they did
45:26try to make that happen.
45:28So there's no arguing that the dairy and low has been hurt and like all David Andrews
45:33is up for the season.
45:34And Michael and when it was got, had to play different spots, exactly.
45:38So like we talked about it as on the show before, and we're going to wrap it in a few
45:42because we have nine minutes and we have Alex and Brian coming up.
45:45But I guess the point being is it was never going to be perfect.
45:49And they had quarterback wide receiver tackle to fill in the draft in rounds one, two, and
45:54three, they chose quarterback and wide receiver first and left tackle for third.
45:58If they took a tackle with that 37th pick when they traded up for poke, who knows what
46:04wide receiver they would have gotten.
46:05Everybody would be, you know, up in arms and complaining that they didn't draft the wide
46:08receiver there.
46:09And yeah, they went with the, they went with the tackle and yeah, Drake may is protected,
46:13but he has nobody to throw the ball to.
46:14Like there would, there's multiple ways to slice this thing.
46:17There's multiple holes for them to fill.
46:20They went with quarterback and wide receiver first.
46:22They left tackle.
46:23They still tried to do, I would say the best they could with what was out there.
46:26It hasn't worked out and this is the position they're at.
46:29And that's kind of what we have to deal with and the injuries absolutely factor in.
46:32And that's something that Elliott Wolfe in the front office cannot control.
46:36So can you hold their feet to the fire for, you know, some things sure.
46:40It's not entirely the front office's fault.
46:43And that's kind of where I'll leave it here because we have to talk about game time before
46:46we wrap this thing up.
46:49Because if that's playing game time, it is playing and game time, you can actually get

48:00What time is it Taylor?
48:02Game time.
48:03Let's go baby.
48:04All right.
48:05That's game time.
48:06How much is 112 in pounds?
48:07That's a great, great question.
48:09And I know for us, yeah, if you're in the chat and you can you can convert currency,
48:14how much is $112 in pounds?
48:16All right.
48:17Couple more quickly before we get out of here, Taylor, I know we only have a couple minutes,
48:21but if you're watching this in the chat, hanging out on Patriots, Paris fast, make
48:25sure you stick around because Alex, Mark, Brian Heinz coming up at five o'clock with
48:30their breakdown of Patriots versus Texas.
48:34All right.
48:35I know we're going to get to the run or the or the defensive stuff in another video, Taylor,
48:43but quickly we got a question on it.
48:45Run defense and tackling.
48:47Are they just getting bit?
48:48Excuse me.
48:49Are they just getting beat physically?
48:50Why isn't it as great and how can they fix it?
48:53Yeah.
48:54So I'm just going to show a couple of clips because I uploaded this on Twitter really
48:58quickly.
48:59So Devon gotcha.
49:00I mentioned that on two of the big plays that they allowed, they allowed for explosive runs,
49:03two runs of 50 or over 50 yards to the explosive runs were on wham plays where basically you're
49:09going to get this H back coming down to block Devon gotcha.
49:13That gives an opportunity for the Texans to double team this defensive and Keon White
49:17pass rushing defensive end, climb to the second level.
49:21Now Rayquan McMillan has really struggled to get off blocks this year.
49:24If you look at almost all of their explosive runs, Rayquan McMillan and or Keon White is
49:29at the point of attack.
49:30So here you're going to see that Keon White gets blown out of his gap.
49:33Rayquan McMillan, see ya, he's gone.
49:36Jelani Tabai can't get over in time.
49:38You're also going to have John Jones, which is going to come up in a second.
49:41John Jones also gets blocked by Stefan Diggs.
49:44Jalen Hawkins thankfully is able to run this down, but yeah, not a great play and you're
49:49going to see this wham play again.
49:50So see Devon gotcha, double team on Dietrich Wise, a pass rushing defensive end, then gets
49:57to the second level, blocks Jelani Tabai.
49:59He can't do anything.
50:01John Jones gets caught with his eyes inside.
50:03You're going to see it more here where he peeks in like that, thinking it's going to
50:06be an inside run.
50:08So that's why he doesn't get the holding call when he tries to go back outside.
50:11That's going to go for a touchdown.
50:13Here's another play.
50:14A couple other plays where this happened.
50:16The other two explosives, they weren't on wham plays, which are more gap concepts.
50:20These were actually on outside zone plays where linebackers overran their gaps.
50:24This one, rough by Sione Takitaki, who I expected to be better on these plays, overruns it,
50:30cutback is wide open, and he gets smothered.
50:32But here was the big run.
50:33This was the really, this was, I think, the worst explosive run that they've allowed.
50:38Really one of the worst this season.
50:40One you're going to see, Marte Mapu's in a tough spot.
50:42He gets double teamed.
50:43He should not really be at the point of attack here, but he is.
50:46Rayquan McMillan completely overruns it.
50:49You have an opportunity.
50:50Anthony Jennings does his best here.
50:52Jaqueline Roy has a chance to make this tackle.
50:56Doesn't wrap up for whatever reason, just decides to play patty cake, whiffs, and then
51:01Kyle Duggar slows up because he thinks the play's over.
51:04Isn't in position to make the tackle.
51:06Damian Pierce, long touchdown run after the Patriots had just scored.
51:10Yeah, so it's not to me about, it's not about scheme or anything like that.
51:16I don't care.
51:17They need to execute better.
51:18And I think it's why Devon Godshaw was so pissed off at the end of the game,
51:21because it's just not sound execution.
51:23You're overrunning gaps.
51:24You're getting blown out of gaps.
51:25You're not being stout at the point of attack.
51:27Now, losing Christian Barmore, losing Juwan Bentley, losing Jabril Peppers,
51:31those are tough blows.
51:32But at some point, like he said, if you're a reserve player or
51:34you're rotational, whatever, you need to prep like you're a starter.
51:37Sione Takitaki gets a bit of a pass because I understand that he maybe had
51:41fresh legs or whatever.
51:42He hasn't practiced really as a Patriot.
51:45But Rayquan McMillan, I think that they've got to replace him because he is just,
51:49he works his butt off in coverage, but he has been a huge liability.
51:52Keon White has been very hot and cold, mostly cold against the run.
51:56They really just got to be better overall as a unit,
51:58because this is unsustainable.
51:59They're really putting the coverage units in some tough positions.
52:02They really are.
52:02I mean, they let up 41 points in total yesterday.
52:05Their run defense was bad.
52:06Cedric Stroud is going to get his, but when Gerard Mayo says after the game that
52:11they didn't put their rookie quarterback in the best position to win,
52:14it's not just the offense around him, it's the defense around him in general.
52:18It's really, it's Gerard Mayo and
52:20Demarcus Covington's unit that they helped out running under Bill Belichick.
52:24And it's just not the same, and things are going to have to change.
52:27And they've obviously dealt with injuries along the second level and
52:31things like that.
52:32So they need to get healthy, and maybe that'll help too.
52:34Jawan Bentley, missing him in the run game is a huge loss.
52:38But next man up, that's the NFL, you got to be able to figure out, and
52:42they haven't been able to do it so far.
52:44Well, that's going to do it for us, Taylor,
52:45because we have two minutes until the Pats beat guys are coming on.
52:48We appreciate everybody tuning in, 2,100 people total across all platforms.
52:52We appreciate a hell of a lot of all you guys.
