After obtaining her Bachelor's degree, Ismaëlda OUATTARA completed several internships, and even landed some contracts. However, her adventure in the world of employment was short-lived. Faced with this situation, she decided to become an entrepreneur.

Passionate about art, Ismaëlda OUATTARA set up "Les Merveilles du Bois", a company specialising in the processing and marketing of crockery and earrings made from dead wood. For her, this business is a way of promoting Burkninabè craftsmanship and providing for her own needs.

Despite difficult beginnings marked by many prejudices, Ismaëlda OUATTARA has managed to pull herself up by her bootstraps. Today, she sells her creations to restaurants and individuals.

00:00If I had to do it again, it's obvious that I would go into the artisanal sector.
00:06Because in Burkina Faso, the artisanal sector is very, very important.
00:10We have a lot of things to value.
00:22I made the choice to start a business because I am aware of the world of Burkina Faso's employment.
00:29After my degree, I had to do internships and contracts, so it was a bit complicated for me.
00:35So I had to try to create a small income-generating activity.
00:40As I am passionate about the artisanal sector,
00:43that's why I started to value Burkina Faso's artisanal sector through wooden dishes and wooden earrings.
00:59I chose to transform wood because I noticed that wood is a natural material.
01:09And I saw that people leave wood everywhere, in nature.
01:15And the dead wood, in a way, can cause a fire.
01:20Instead of leaving the wood in nature, degrading our nature,
01:24we simply take care of the wood to give it a second life.
01:29Often, I sit down and I have ideas in my head, model ideas.
01:34So I simply take my pen and a sheet of paper, and I try to draw with the different dimensions.
01:43And I send it to the artisans.
01:45They see if they have any problems with the images.
01:49They contact me for more details.
01:51I give them the details so that they can make these articles.
01:54In the beginning, people said that it was the bosses who paid for it with the whites.
02:03But she didn't give up.
02:05She kept going.
02:07And from time to time, it came out.
02:09Often, it didn't come out.
02:11She's a fighter.
02:13So that motivated me.
02:15Like she said, she's a sister too.
02:17Look, she's a big sister.
02:19Since 2022, I've known the articles of the Marvel of Wood on social media.
02:25And I contacted them at the same time to look for me.
02:29And when I took it, I really appreciated it.
02:31Before, I had taken some articles elsewhere.
02:35But it wasn't resistant.
02:37And when I saw these articles, I said, wow, it was resistant.
02:41My main clients are restaurateurs and private individuals.
02:49All the people interested in original dishes, very aesthetic, that enhance meals.
02:59All these people contact me to make purchases.
03:03The beginning was really, really difficult.
03:05It was very, very complicated.
03:07When I started, several people told me that wooden dishes were intended for rich people, for whites.
03:17They neglected it.
03:19I tried to explain to them, to show them the advantages of wooden dishes.
03:23But well, they still neglected it.
03:25But I kept going, I kept fighting.
03:29Until now, it's going a little bit.
03:31They're changing their mentality a little bit, accepting the dishes.
