00:00Nightly greetings one and all, Denise Osorio here, homegrown and happy to bring you PTV
00:11News Now.
00:12Tops on our news leaderboard at the hour tonight.
00:16The first half of the Marcos Jr. administration will be remembered as the height of US-Philippine
00:22diplomatic and friendly relations, not only between the two heads of state who see eye
00:27to eye in almost all bilateral concerns, but also Biden's chief surrogates in his top diplomat,
00:33Antony Blinken, and the man at the helm of the Pentagon, Defense Chief Lloyd Austin.
00:38The affable and gentle big guy in perhaps his last visit to the country signed a historic
00:43pact with his counterpart earlier today in Camp Aguinaldo that allows for a sharing of
00:48military intelligence reports that furthers and strengthens interoperability between the
00:53two nations.
00:54Otherwise known as the General Security of Military Information Agreement, the GSOMIA
01:00is the security measure for the protection of classified information agreement.
01:05It also serves as a framework to facilitate or speed up the swap of military information
01:10between the two countries.
01:12Also in today's visit, both Teodoro and Austin led the groundbreaking ritual for the Combined
01:17Coordination Center in Camp Aguinaldo, which will reinforce and enhance interoperability
01:22between the two nations and epitomize the unprecedented level of cooperation and friendship
01:28between the two longstanding allies.
01:31Hence, the recognition and gratitude for Austin's work to bring the level of relationship of
01:36the two countries to the status quo, the Philippines government conferred to him a special token
01:41of appreciation or achievement award.
01:45This is Secretary Lloyd Austin's fourth visit to the country.
01:52House Speaker Johnson vows Trump's cabinet picks will shake up status quo in Washington,
01:58D.C.
01:59Trump's resounding victory in the electoral count and the popular vote is being taken
02:04to mean as having a sweeping mandate or blanket authority to run the government as he pleases
02:10and with little if no resistance or challenge at all.
02:13A number of his cabinet picks indicate just that, along with the House Speaker's latest
02:18pronouncements of a major shakeup in the bureaucracy on day one of the Trump 2.0 presidency.
02:24VOA's Veronica Balderas Iglesias has the full story.
02:30President-elect Donald Trump continued making cabinet nominations during the weekend, including
02:35that of Chris Wright, an advocate for the oil and gas industry who would serve as Secretary
02:41of Energy.
02:43Trump has prioritized political loyalists for key cabinet positions.
02:48One pick in particular, that of former Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz as Attorney General
02:54continues to steer controversy.
02:57Before Gaetz resigned last week, a House Ethics Committee had been investigating whether he
03:02engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use.
03:06Gaetz denies the accusations.
03:09Democratic Representative Adam Schiff told CNN's State of the Union that Gaetz, in his
03:14view, is unqualified to serve in the proposed role.
03:18Are we really going to have an attorney general who, there's credible allegations he was involved
03:24in child sex trafficking, potential illicit drug use, obstruction of investigation, who
03:29has no experience serving in the Justice Department, only being investigated by it.
03:33Republican Senator Mark Wayne Mullen believes the Senate should have access to the investigation
03:38findings but told NBC's Meet the Press that Gaetz deserves a fair chance of being confirmed
03:45for the role.
03:46I have no doubt that President Trump believes that Matt Gaetz is the right person to do
03:50the right job.
03:51Matt will be treated the same as every nominee out there.
03:55The House Minority Leader, Democratic Representative Hakeem Jeffries, also appeared Sunday on NBC.
04:02He questioned President-elect Trump's cabinet picks, some of whom lack experience related
04:08to their proposed roles.
04:09Is this the very best that America has to offer for a moment like this, with so many
04:16challenges that we confront?
04:18Of course not.
04:20With their votes to elect Donald Trump, the American people have given the Republicans
04:25the mandate to shake up the status quo, underscored the Speaker of the House of Representatives,
04:31Republican Mike Johnson.
04:33Any president has the right to name their own cabinet, to nominate persons that they
04:37think will fulfill their agenda.
04:39And the people that are on this list will do that.
04:42They will go into the agencies that they're being asked to lead, and they will reform
04:45them.
04:46It is expected that most of Trump's cabinet picks will win quick Senate approval after
04:52confirmation hearings.
04:54The president-elect has also called on Senate Republican leaders to allow him to make recess
05:00appointments, which would erase the need for the hearings.
05:04Veronica Balderas Iglesias, DOJ News, Washington.
05:11At this juncture, let's turn to PTV's Baguio City studios for what's hot and happening
05:16in the Cordilleras.
05:17Audrey?

05:52because of the landslide.
05:55The most important thing is to be careful and stay updated.

06:10As of 8 p.m. today, there was a landslide at the Upper Camp Philex Mines Camp 3 in Jaituba, Benguet.

06:51of the Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong,
06:54is responsible for the activities of the agencies, law enforcement agencies,
06:59civil society organizations, and advocates.
07:03The activities are organized by RAN Rio Incorporated,
07:06Philippine Coast Guard, National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea,
07:10and the Presidential Communications Office of the Philippine Information Agency.
07:15The advocacy run is supposed to support the public
07:18so that the Philippines can fight for the protection of the West Philippine Sea.
07:22This is the first category of advocacy run for the West Philippine Sea in Manila.
