00:00The crystal ball meteorologist Joe Lumberg with a look at next week Joe, but before we get the next week
00:07Let's see what we're talking about. It's hard to believe it was a week ago. We did a we were getting ready for Christmas Day
00:13And we're already looking ahead to New Year's Eve. Yep
00:18As you look at the big picture going into the last couple of days of 2024 and into 2025
00:24The jet stream will be pretty far north
00:26But there'll be a growing trough in the nation's midsection something like this as we go toward New Year's Eve
00:31A storm is likely to come up this way on New Year's Day
00:34Produce rain on its eastern side maybe some snow and ice in the northwest side
00:37But watch out cold air is going to follow that and don't be surprised if the first week of New Year's you see some snow in
00:43the east
00:46Joe that storm is going to be arriving right on cue and that sets the stage
00:52For a bit of a pattern change it does I mean we've got a storm system
00:55That'll be going through the Great Lakes this weekend Bernie
00:58And that's going to kind of wipe out most of the cold air in the east, but that New Year's Eve New Year's Day storm
01:03That's one of our three things to know about the coming week the transition to 2025 and behind it
01:09Yes
01:09There is cold air in the pipeline for the eastern half of the country for the first week week 10 days of the new year
01:16The good news for the northwest you've been getting hit with storm after storm after storm
01:20You're gonna see a break in that storm pattern next week all right
01:24Let's talk about that New Year's Eve storm because it's that which kind of sets the table for the return of cold also
01:30It's not only that storm Joe, but that big blocking high-pressure system
01:35Near Greenland explain yeah, you you you saw from the tape that we were talking about a trough coming into this area
01:41What we didn't show you on that graphic is this thing here
01:43That's a big blocking high up over green and what it does is it forces the jet stream south so you get disturbances to come
01:49Through here
01:50They're forced to go this way rather than east way and as a result of that this system for New Year's Eve in a New Year's
01:56Day will probably take a pass something like this and most areas are going to be too warm for anything
02:00But rain, but on the northwest side there may be some snow in these places as you get through
02:04I'd say very late Tuesday night and during the day on Wednesday, but cold air does follow for next week
02:09Yeah, let's talk about that Joe waves of cold. Let's begin this loop on Monday. That would be the 30th
02:16That's right
02:17And you can see that the air mass in this in the east is not terribly cold the storm system goes through and then boom
02:22But by the time you get to Friday the cold air is in place across most of the east
02:27But it's a dry West Northwest flow. Let's advance this forward
02:30you see that the cold air still in place as you get into Monday a storm system will come through during that time frame and
02:35Then behind it more waves of cold for Wednesday and Friday and at the end of that period we are concerned about some
02:41Potentially wintry weather for the east
