Bob Ryan and Jeff Goodman recap the latest stretch of performances for the Boston Celtics, including an ugly couple of losses against the Magic and the 76ers. Bob blames poor defense for the recent struggles, going as far as saying that teams don't fear the Celtics as they did last season. Plus, they discuss the NBA ratings issue.

00:00All right, welcome to another episode of the Ryan and Goodman podcast.
00:22I'm Jeff Goodman.
00:23He is Bob Ryan and Gary Tangway is, uh, he's in Costa Rica, Bob.
00:28He is, uh, he's in the sun and you are not.
00:31I'll say that he is in the sun and I think it's cold up there in Massachusetts.
00:37It wasn't it.
00:39I think it was about 18 degrees.
00:41It was this morning.
00:42I think something like that.
00:43Yeah.
00:44Anyway.
00:45Yeah.
00:46So he's, he's, he's sun and fun.
00:47That's good.
00:48Um, all right.
00:49Well, uh, prize picks, uh, we're brought to you by prize picks, the exclusive daily fantasy
00:53partner of CLNS media network.
00:54Uh, pick more, pick less with prize picks.
00:57Um, all right, Bob, let's, let's get to, first of all, the, uh, can we call them the struggling
01:04Boston Celtics now that they've lost two games in a row?
01:08Can we do that?
01:09One not well, it's not just that it's four out of seven and it's, um, uh, one notch above
01:16struggling.
01:17Um, there, there's something, I don't know, there's little malaise going on at the moment.
01:23I mean, I, I don't like, I don't like what I feed the field of it, uh, at all.
01:27And, uh, you know, it's not just the idea that they're so three point centric and that's
01:31reason aren't falling, you know, which is always part of the deal.
01:34We know that it's always going to be part of the deal, uh, and on all that.
01:37But, um, uh, defensively, they're not the same defensive team that they, and they're
01:41not the team that they got to be.
01:43And they should be, that's, that's as simple as that.
01:46And I don't know if it's schemes or I don't know if it's just, uh, the want to, but, um,
01:51you know, Joe Mazzola and company got to, they got to solve it because nobody's afraid
01:56of them.
01:57The last year is over, you know, I'm telling you, and they, we, we saw right away Cleveland
02:02was emboldened and they are, they, by the way, it's that they have a four game lead
02:05over the Celtics here as, as we get the Christmas and, um, uh, they're, they're not the only
02:11good team around either.
02:12Milwaukee has found itself a little bit in the East and, and then we're going to the
02:17Knicks.
02:18So I'm telling you, I, they got my attention opening night, even though the Celtics pounded
02:22them, they scored a lot of points.
02:23And I said, if they play the same kind of offense, the next 81 games, they're going
02:27to win 55 games.
02:28And guess what folks, they're a damn good offensive team right now with, with their
02:33core six.
02:34And it is only six.
02:35Yeah.
02:36I'll say this, going back to the Celtics, I'll say this is it's going to be hard.
02:43Like this isn't a team.
02:46And again, you can, you can go back and really tell me about how those, those Celtics championship
02:52teams were, or those Lakers championship teams were, they had each other to motivate them.
02:58I just feel like that's what this Celtics team is missing.
03:02They're missing.
03:03They're not taking Cleveland seriously, Bob.
03:05They're not.
03:06I can tell you like, and I'm not saying they don't think Cleveland's a good team because
03:10I know they think they are, but, but they're not, they're not scared.
03:14They're not intimidated.
03:16Their biggest issue is themselves.
03:19We know that.
03:20And motivation and around the holiday time, you wonder if it's just a little bit tougher
03:26to get up for every game.
03:27And I know they should be up for the Sixers and Embiid and Maxey and those guys.
03:32But I do think there's a little bit of, Hey, we're going to be able to turn it on when
03:36we want to turn it on here.
03:39I'm not going to get overly concerned about this because I just think it's, it's where
03:45we're at in, in we're not, again, we don't, they don't have that team number one and we're
03:52not in the eighties.
03:53We're not in the seventies or eighties where I think guys were a little bit more self-motivated
03:59and had fewer distractions than they have today.
04:03I don't know.
04:04I mean, I'm trying to figure it out, but I'm not overly concerned.
04:07I wish they had another team that would motivate them though.
04:10I do.
04:11That's a good point you just made there being, you know, there's no social media that Larry
04:16had to worry about or Magic had to worry about at all 40 years ago, of course.
04:20And you're right.
04:21They were, they were aware of each other all the time.
04:25And they both, Larry and Magic would circle that, that dates on the calendar.
04:29And I mean that literally, and it was a complete, you were always aware of what they were doing
04:35every day.
04:36How'd the Lakers do?
04:37And secondarily, the 76ers in the beginning of the eighties, you know, the 76ers and Celtics
04:42were each one in 60 games.
04:44And the East was a, it was a combat.
04:47One year we had to go down to the last day of the season to determine the Eastern conference,
04:51you know, and that was like a talk about a Larry was built differently.
04:56Larry was built differently than Jason Tatum, right?
04:59Like those are the two stars.
05:01You want to compare them?
05:02They're very different again.
05:04I'm not saying like Tatum, I think the knock on Tatum is he's not a killer and he's not
05:11tough enough.
05:12And like, I think by today's standards, he's fine in those regards.
05:17Like obviously if you put them, you know, 30, 40 years ago, but no, he probably doesn't
05:21stand up.
05:22But how many, how many killers are there right now?
05:24How many guys out there right now in the NBA are guys that you would say like, Hey, they're
05:29going to rip your throat out.
05:31Like they're going to come every single, LeBron's one of them.
05:34He might be one of one.
05:35I mean, they're at the KD maybe.
05:36A guy who happens to be in the news, he's always finding a way that fits that description.
05:44And as much as anybody in the league, it is his description, it is his ID and that's Jimmy
05:48Butler.
05:49And, you know, and you know, he, once again, Jimmy Butler is a source of controversy about
05:55he declared, well, he, according to sources, he's once out of Miami for the trading deadline
06:03and to which Pat Rurale has straight, he replied, no, I'm not, I'm not trading you.
06:08I don't care if you walk into the year, but you're not, I'm not trading you.
06:11Now that's very interesting, but anyway, he does fit that description and you're right.
06:15I don't know how many other guys I can, I can say, I would say if he were a few, a little
06:20younger and, and it would really matter that much.
06:23I'd say Draymond Green, but Draymond is on the, you know, he's on the back nine.
06:27There's no doubt about that.
06:28So even Jimmy Butler, I mean, Jimmy Butler's 35, like, like do you really, and his contract,
06:34I think it ends at the end of this year.
06:37Like you're not paying Jimmy Butler max money at 35.
06:40He's been banged up the last couple of years.
06:42I know he's played well in the playoffs, but I'm not mortgaging a whole lot for Jimmy Butler
06:46who, oh, by the way, also has been a chemistry killer at times throughout his career.
06:52So, you know, in Miami it's worked because it's kind of been the Jimmy Butler show, right?
06:58It's been his show, his team, his franchise for the most part.
07:04And he's won enough, especially in the post season a couple of years ago that nobody's
07:07really questioned it.
07:09But I think if you put him somewhere else, I don't know, I've, I've known Jimmy Butler
07:13a long, long time, Bob.
07:15And the Jimmy Butler that I know today is not the Jimmy Butler I knew 15 years ago.
07:21He has changed.
07:22A lot of people call him Hollywood Jimmy.
07:26And again, listen, is he tough?
07:27Sure.
07:28Does he play hard when he's on the court?
07:29Sure.
07:30I wouldn't be, again, I wouldn't be giving up anything close to max money for 36-year-old
07:35Jimmy Butler, which is what he's going to turn next September.
07:38You can't do that.
07:41So anyway, but, but back to the Celtics, you know, it's, it's, it's just a brief little
07:46maybe brick on the radar screen, but, but then I just, you know, didn't like to watch
07:51the way that, that they have played the last couple of games.
07:53And it's one other thing that we knew from the start, it's always going to be the story,
07:57be the story until the, and that is, can Prusingas get out of bed without hurting himself.
08:03And, and, you know, I mean, ankle now this time, you know, in the game, that you just
08:10have to accept that that's, is it ever going to change?
08:13I don't know.
08:14But, you know, so they didn't have, they lost him for the second half in Philly.
08:18Maybe they win the game if they got him, who knows if they're going to have him for when
08:21they're going to get him back.
08:22I don't know.
08:23So anyway, there's that.
08:24Yeah.
08:25And they didn't have Drew Holliday.
08:26They didn't have Drew Holliday in that game also.
08:28And last I checked, he's pretty important to the culture of that team.
08:32And in that game, you know, my guy Pritchard had been playing so well, but that night he
08:36didn't come up big.
08:37He was one for nine.
08:38And, you know, so he's bailed them out a few times this year already, but that was one
08:44night he didn't have it.
08:45All right.
08:46So your panic meter, your panic meter right now for the Celtics, zero to 10, where is
08:52it Bob?
08:53Where is it?
08:54Two and a half to three.
08:57I don't want to over, you know, overdramatize it, but I just identified that these are,
09:05you know, and that it happened and these games were not, they're not comfortable to
09:12watch and, you know, and one was a, you know, a blown lead and the other one was a comeback
09:17that, you know, that fell short.
09:20You know what it is?
09:21Anyway.
09:22It's Boston.
09:23Bob, Bob, it's Boston fans right now.
09:25And I still think it's the best roster in the league.
09:29I still think on paper that the best five, the best eight and the best 10.
09:34And, you know, and so I get, they, they disappoint me when they don't play up to my standard
09:38in that regard.
09:39Okay.
09:40I'll just put it that way.
09:41All right.
09:42Okay.
09:43That's fair.
09:44That's fair.
09:45All right.
09:46I want to get to another topic that I'm not even sure we're planning on talking about,
09:48but I want to get your take on this because it was kind of a big point of contention over
09:54the Christmas break was NBA ratings, NBA ratings.
09:59I hate ratings.
10:00I hate, I honestly, I hate talking about it.
10:02So I'm not going to talk about ratings specifically.
10:04I want to talk about the, the game itself.
10:08And are you a believer that that people aren't as into the NBA as they were five, 10 years
10:18ago?
10:19And if so, why is it the three point shot, which people are, listen, you've been, you've
10:25been preaching this for a while.
10:26Is it the three point shot?
10:28Is it the influx of, of international players?
10:31Is it that LeBron and KD were like, not tired of watching them, but kind of tired of watching
10:37them?
10:38Steph even.
10:39What, what is it?
10:40If you believe that?
10:42I have a hard time juxtaposing the attendances versus the ratings.
10:48Attendance is good.
10:49Yeah.
10:50Everywhere.
10:51I mean, the attendance is fine and nobody, it's, it's what it should be, I think.
10:55But it, but ratings, they say, you know, once again, I'm a, I hate ratings too.
10:58I hate skeptic.
10:59It's not my favorite topic in the world.
11:01Uh, I, I, then in the midst of all this, we're told that the crate, the ratings on Christmas
11:05day were astronomically higher than last year.
11:08You know, why is that?
11:09I had no idea.
11:10I think part of it was the games, the games are on ABC.
11:13The games are on ABC and they only went head to head with maybe two football games or something.
11:18I think that's why it turned out two of them were outstanding.
11:22The one I watched the Knicks and the Spurs, that's the best game I have seen all year.
11:27Okay.
11:28That's the highest level standard NBA game.
11:30The way I think the NBA likes to think of itself, that game did.
11:34And then it was almost apparently outdone later at night by the, uh, the Warriors and
11:38the Lakers.
11:39That game was an outstanding game that very dramatically.
11:42Okay.
11:43So fine.
11:44Um, it's a very good question.
11:45I have to tell you this based on X, my X's, you know, my, you know, my ex sample, uh,
11:53the more people than I would have suspected are on my side and, and, and the disdain for
11:58the three, there's more people than I would have suspected.
12:01And I do get this every day.
12:02I get somebody complaining about, about the, the, the three point shooting contest known
12:06as the NBA.
12:07And, and, uh, um, this, this makes me feel good by the way, cause you know what I feel
12:12about the three, but, but I don't know if it, uh, if I'm surprised that many people,
12:17cause I was led to believe that, you know, given it's been around for, in the NBA since
12:221979, 80.
12:23And, and that, uh, you know, obviously generations of growing up of people, you'd be 30, 35,
12:2840 year old people have never known a game, but didn't have the three, you know, so this
12:32is the game they know, uh, some of them falling out of love with it.
12:35Uh, I don't know, but I think it's an issue.
12:38The other thing that you hear about all the time that angers people is, is the, uh, uh,
12:43the, the, the traveling, uh, the palming that, you know, that we don't even ever hear called,
12:49uh, and, and the official situation.
12:52Bob Lowe management.
12:53Yup.
12:54Yup.
12:55Right.
12:56So, uh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:59So yeah, that's, uh, and so I don't, I don't think there's a crisis or anything on the
13:04NBA yet, but I think it's something that they have to be concerned about, but, but what's
13:08going to happen?
13:09Nobody's going to take three ain't going anywhere now.
13:12People come up with some proposals, you know, uh, get rid of it from the corner, you know,
13:16change the art nature, uh, make it longer.
13:19Well, you know, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
13:21Okay.
13:22Fine.
13:23All right.

14:24All right, Bob, um, Steph versus LeBron, uh, could that be the last time we see that on
14:32Christmas or, you know, like how much are you going to miss these two guys?
14:38And are you still, they're obviously still playing at a high level, but, but the one
14:45caveat to that is they haven't been able to get their team and carry their team deep into
14:49the playoffs anymore.
14:50That was the difference, you know, five years ago, five years ago, you could look at them
14:54and they were playing at a high level and they had a chance to win the title.
14:57Now you look at their teams and you just say like, is it because of them falling off or
15:02is it because those, uh, GMs haven't put enough around both of them?
15:07Well, I mean, the, uh, I think it's the latter.
15:11Pickley with the Lakers when struggling, they tried to address their problem about
15:16shooting when they picked up Hachimura, they picked, now they got, they drafted Kinect
15:20who, who can, who's a shooter, Reeves, you know, can shoot.
15:25And I think they've addressed it, uh, their, their issue, one of their issues remains the
15:29same.
15:30Guess who's not playing right now?
15:31Got hurt in the game, seven minutes into the game, Anthony Davis.
15:35So when they have Anthony Davis, who was having a good year when he's out there as usual,
15:41um, yeah.
15:42And then the Warriors, it was inevitable.
15:43They couldn't, they, you know, that it was going to, uh, I would say, you know, change
15:48the jury rate.
15:49They, they, they had their run and, and, you know, Thompson's gone and, and, uh, now, and,
15:53and, um, Ramon is definitely, you know, fading and, uh, and, and Curry himself is what, 36,
16:00whatever, 37.
16:01Um, yeah, that's just inevitable.
16:04The changing of the guard taking place in the West, you know, and so, but that was a
16:09nice throwback thing.
16:10It was wonderful.
16:11And it was a nice Christmas present for fans who watched it, you know, and, and I just,
16:15I was kind of touched by the, the, the, the camaraderie, you know, the hugging, the two,
16:20they really, you know, they, but they, they, and they shared gold medals together and,
16:24you know, and, uh, and they've had that.
16:27And obviously their, their sophistication of love of basketball, they appreciate who
16:32each other are, you know, they're, they're, they're not the same player, just, uh, they're
16:36a different player, but they're both extremely, uh, high-level players and all-time players.
16:42That's nice.
16:43No, I, it could be the last Christmas one.
16:45Yeah, it could be.
16:46I mean, I don't know.
16:47I mean, I, it looks like Dotton, LeBron has no intention of retiring.
16:50I don't think to tell you the truth, but, uh, and, and as long as he's playing at the
16:54level, he's still playing at a, at a, at an amazing level and, uh, uh, but it was nice
16:59and that was a nice way to end the day and it was a nice, it was nice.
17:02So good for them, you know, but I, you're right.
17:04It's not likely to be, uh, any kind of a playoff competition in 2025, although we can always
17:09be surprised, but no, it's not, that's don't, don't be looking forward to that.
17:13Hey, is Steph, when he retires, do you think Steph Curry is going to be considered a top
17:1910 player of all time?
17:21Yeah, that's an interesting thing.
17:23We do do the, the, uh, the, the, it's getting very crowded.
17:27You know, we've got new guys, uh, you know, I know how I have my, I've framed my 10 and
17:32he wasn't in my 10, uh, although, uh, but he certainly, you can make a very, very strong
17:38case for him.
17:39I mean, if, if we believe that he is the greatest all around shooter of all time, you know,
17:43and I've certainly fallen in, I believe that, um, it's, it's, it's, you have to make a case
17:49for him.
17:50Uh, you know, but, uh, uh, who is 10 for you, who is 10 Bob?
17:57This is just, I have to start off with my, the, the one thing that always starts off
18:01with any list of the top 10 has to have the three centers, the three centers, of course,
18:06Russell Chamberlain and Kareem that that's a gift.
18:09Then we've got Matt, then we've got magic, then we got Michael and, and, and LeBron in
18:16terms of virtuosos.
18:18That's five magic and Larry or Larry and magic at six and seven.
18:22Okay.
18:23Duncan is next up for me.
18:25That's eight.
18:26I may be under selling Kobe.
18:28I may be, but I may have to grudgingly, I don't know.
18:31I have nothing against them.
18:33So I, I just, so that's not it.
18:34No, like I, like, like I, like I don't like Harden that that's, I mean, I admit it.
18:39I don't like his game, but, but I have nothing against Kobe.
18:42So if you put Kobe nine, uh, you know, I know a lot of people love Shaq, but I mean, I think,
18:49you know, I'm not a big Shaq guy.
18:50Uh, so, uh, you could say Kareem could be, could be 10 or nine and 10 and there you go
18:57right there.
18:58He's knocking on the door.
19:00He's right there.
19:01He's right there.
19:02But we've got, we've got guys, how's it go?
19:07How's it all going to end for Jokic?
19:09And we got another guy that has to be considered, you know, and I don't want to slight him in
19:13the least and that's Duran.
19:14Duran is great.
19:15Great, great, great.
19:16All time.
19:17Come on, let's get serious.
19:18And so he has to be in that discussion and it's like all these discussions, no matter
19:24what sport, no matter what, um, there's no right and wrong, you know, unless, unless
19:29someone just goes completely off the rails and nominates somebody completely crazy that,
19:34you know, but basically these are all, you can make a case for, for, uh, uh, for them.
19:39Oh, and that's, Oh, excuse me.
19:41Then we have a problem.
19:42I have a problem.
19:43I would have finished.
19:44What about Oscar Robertson?
19:45I would have to get people, you know, and of course my guy, Havlicek, who's the most underrated
19:51people don't appreciate how good he was.
19:53And I'll say that for the 10th, he was better at the end of his career to last five years
19:57than both Robertson and West.
19:59But people don't realize that anyway, you got, you got Oscar and Jerry and you got Havlicek
20:04and now we're up to about 12, you know, and, uh, and there was an answer, but Curry's in
20:09that discussion.
20:10Yes, absolutely.
20:11No doubt.
20:12No doubt.
20:13All right.
20:14I know how much you love going to games.
20:15I love going to games as well.
20:16Uh, make sure you check out game time tickets.
20:18I'm going to do it actually when we're done here, cause I got to get tickets for the Carolina
20:23hurricanes game.
20:25And then, uh, my daughter's covering NC state, uh, Clemson women, uh, basketball.
20:31So I got to get tickets for that.
20:32So I'm going to browse through their app.
20:34Um, you can find seats on game time picks, uh, great deals on there as well.
20:39It's a perfect gift to get people this holiday season.
20:43Um, you can, you can see there's a super deal on there.
20:47You can see the seats before you pick, uh, what tickets you're going to buy.
20:52They have a lowest price guarantee, uh, event cancellation, protection, job loss protection.
20:57They have all that.
20:58So make sure you check out a game time picks, uh, for any, whether it's sports, whether
21:03it's theater, whether it's concerts, whatever it is, a game time picks is a place to go
21:08for, for all your ticket, uh, needs, uh, Bob, what do we got next?
21:14I guess I'll throw one more name in there.
21:16So people don't think, you know, and that's Janice.
21:18He's going to be in that discussion.
21:19Yep.
21:20Yeah.
21:21Honestly.
21:22Yep.
21:23Okay.
21:24All right.
21:25I know you had a story.
21:26I believe, I believe you had a story for me.
21:27It's night.
21:28The Hawks had a very remarkable game.
21:31They were down by 21 points, which is no big deal, but they, they won the game by hitting
21:36the, uh, who, uh, with them with a 50.4th quarter, 50, 5-0, very rare to have a 50,
21:45which leads me to the fact that I, the record, you know what the record is for most points
21:51in a period in, in, in the NBA history?
21:54You have any idea?
21:55No.
21:5660?
21:57Well, no.
21:58Close.
21:59The answer is 58.
22:01Wow.
22:02I, on October 20th, 1972, the Boston Celtics played a home game against the Buffalo Braves
22:14at the end of the third quarter.
22:16The score was Boston 1-0-3, Buffalo 60.
22:21That is a 43 point advantage.
22:24In the fourth period, the Buffalo Braves led mostly by Randy Smith to win off, scored a
22:31record 58 points in the fourth quarter against the Celtics, outscoring the Celtics 58-23,
22:41thereby reducing the final margin of victory to eight at 126-118.
22:47That's remarkable enough in itself, but that's not the best part.
22:50126-118, Celtics win.
22:53You know what the spread was?
22:57Go ahead.
22:58Eight.
22:59Was it really?
23:00You had the Celtics at the end of the third period, you were up by 43.
23:04You had the Celtics plus eight, up 43.
23:07You're doing pretty good, right?
23:11Guess what?
23:12It was a push.
23:13How about that?
23:14It was a push.
23:16That is the most amazing bettings.
23:18That's two reasons why I don't bet.
23:20I mean, well, that, that would, that's one of them.
23:23And the other was Elman wrote, throw the ball in the wrong basket, the change of spread.
23:27So that's another, we won't get into that one.
23:30So anyway, let's end this, hey, let's end this, Bob, with an ode to Jim Laranega at
23:39Miami.
23:40Oh, yes.
23:41Who called it quits.
23:44Timing was a little bit weird, but they're horrible right now.
23:47I saw them play three games down here in Charleston a few weeks, about a month ago.
23:52And he looked kind of disinterested.
23:55They have talent, but their heart, I mean, they were brutal, brutal.
23:59They lost all three games and they've lost eight of their last nine.
24:05So he basically decided, all right, I'm done.
24:07I'm done at this point.
24:09And he's had a hell of a career.
24:11I mean, he went to the final four as a head coach at George Mason, started his career
24:15at Bowling Green, George Mason, final four, improbable one.
24:20And then another improbable one a couple of years ago at Miami, followed up, you know,
24:25it was a lead eight and then a final four.
24:28And he's in his 70s.
24:30I actually said this when I saw him in Charleston, Bob, I said, it's time.
24:34It's time for him.
24:36And it's time for the Miami program.
24:37I thought he'd get through this year and then retire.
24:42Number one, any stories, any good Laranega stories that you have, because he was a Providence
24:48College guy?
24:49Well, not only that, I became focused on him when he dropped 37 on BC when he was at Providence
24:57one night.
24:58And he was a good player, a good basketball player.
25:02No, that George Mason story at the time, you know, they were the first Cinderella.
25:07We've had a few since, you know, with Florida, the Atlantic and all that stuff and San Diego
25:13State and all that.
25:14But you know, the one that you can't exaggerate the scope of how dramatic that was and the
25:20nature of the way they did it back in 2006.
25:23It was, as I recall, one of their best players didn't even play and they still won.
25:28Yeah.
25:29And the UConn team, remember the UConn team they beat was loaded to get there.
25:37I mean, they were, I think UConn had lost like three games a whole year as a team with
25:42Rudy Gay on it.
25:45And Boston's own Jeff Adrian was on that team, too.
25:48And yeah, that George Mason team was, they were fun to watch.
25:53And with John Larranaga, I won't say he's a character, but he's got personality.
25:57He was a good guy that was good for us in our business, you know, to have him in it.
26:04So I wish him well.
26:07But here we go.
26:08This is Jay Wright, Tony Bennett, you know, same club, folks.
26:13You're right.
26:14He's 75.
26:15He's worn out a little bit.
26:18But I love the story he told, though.
26:19He said that they go to the Final Four in 2023 at Miami and either on the way home or
26:27whatever, four of the players announced to him that they want to leave and, you know,
26:32they want to go make some money.
26:34And, you know, this is where we are, folks.
26:37I'm sorry.
26:38Some people are better equipped to handle this and negotiate it than others.
26:43So I have an issue with totally Bob, I have an issue with him saying that.
26:48And here's my issue.
26:49He benefited as much as anybody.
26:52When NIL came in, if you remember, it became public that Nigel Pack, who had transferred
26:58from Kansas State, was going to get $400,000 each of the next two years.
27:06The guy from Life Wallet or something.
27:09Their stock has plummeted lately, but he was the one who made it public what he was giving
27:13these players, football and basketball.
27:16And they make this run, they go to the Elite Eight, the Final Four.
27:20And you never hear Jim Larenaga crying about NIL back then, because he had the advantage
27:26then.
27:27He had more money.
27:28And now he complains about it.
27:30I just think it just it doesn't do it for me.
27:35You have the NIL still, somewhat this year, by the way.
27:39You have a kid in Jaleel Bethea, who's a top 20 freshman.
27:43Now he's not.
27:44He's not.
27:45He was mis-evaluated in a lot of ways.
27:47But you have talent on this team.
27:49Maybe not as much talent as you had a couple years ago when you had Isaiah Wong and Jordan
27:52Miller.
27:53But I just feel like, yeah, Jim, you're probably not the one that should be saying this.
27:58Because you benefited more than anybody in your Final Four run.
28:02And never once did I hear you complain then.
28:05And now you're complaining because your team stinks.
28:07Yeah, I would totally grant you that.
28:10I think that's a very fair assessment of the situation.
28:13But he will be missed, I think, in the fraternity.
28:17And yeah, so that's the question.
28:21That's the question.
28:23Who's next, Bob?
28:24Because like you're saying, and again, Jim might have retired at the end of the year
28:28no matter what.
28:2975.
28:30OK, you know what?
28:31Leonard Hamilton's in his 70s.
28:33He's probably next.
28:35But who's the one that probably shouldn't go, that's going to go because of the changing
28:39climate and revenue sharing coming in and NIL and the portal and money?
28:46I would say, for my money, it's Mark View at Gonzaga, who's in his early 60s.
28:54I think he's done here in the next year or two.
28:58And I was spot on on Tony Bennett.
29:00He was the first one.
29:01I said it.
29:02It happened.
29:03Tony Bennett and Mark View.
29:04But those are the two that I think I could see.
29:07I could see Mark View being next.
29:10Mark View nominated for the Hall of Fame, by the way.
29:14He's on the list.
29:16But what a career.
29:17I don't know if he's got the best win-loss percentage of all time, but he's got to have
29:23one of the highest win-loss percentages ever.
29:26There's no question.
29:2725 years now, I believe.
29:29You've still not been to a game at Gonzaga.
29:32Not made it out to a game at Gonzaga.
29:35I'm not going this year.
29:37Otherwise, I would bring you along for the trip.
29:42Maybe next year.
29:43Maybe next year we do it.
29:44It could be.
29:45I could see next year being it for Mark View.
29:47As long as we're talking about the coaches, we can wish a happy birthday from our Ryan
29:57Goodman Tangway podcast with Bill Self.
29:59Bill Self birthday.
30:00Speaking of successful coaches.
30:03How old is Bill Self today?
30:0563.
30:06Wow.
30:07I believe it's 63.
30:08Yeah.
30:09Yeah.
30:10One of the best.
30:11One of the best.
30:12Yeah.
30:13All right.
30:14Well, listen, thanks for joining us.
30:17Another episode of the Ryan Goodman podcast.
30:19We'll have Gary back next week from his gallivanting around Costa Rica.
30:25Maybe he'll have a sunburn and all.
30:28And happy holidays to all.
30:29Happy holidays to all that listen.
30:31We really appreciate it.
30:32And we'll see you next week.
