00:30Now see
00:52Welcome back to
00:54Still Potable! The best Celtics podcast here on the internet made by Al Gore. It's just
01:01a series of dump trucks and tubes folks and we're on it talking basketball, talking Boston
01:06Celtics basketball. I am Sam Jam Packard. In the middle of your screen is Jay King from
01:11The Athletic and we got Brian B. Rob Rob from MassLive.com. Together we are Still Potable
01:18a Monday through Friday Boston Celtics podcast. Today is the free episode and that means we
01:23are coming to you on the CLNS YouTube page and we are brought to you by PrizePix and
01:28the Game Time app. Use promo code CLNS if you want to save money on those fine products.
01:36We're kind of in the middle of the doldrums of the NBA season. I got to stop you for a
01:41second. You tried to make me look weak on the internet. We've waited for this show to
01:49get started. Like three days coming. I was watching Good Will Hunting and Robin Williams
01:58in that says that he benches 285 and I found that to be not maybe a credible statistic
02:05and I was tweeted this what maybe like 1130 at night on a on a Friday and then Jay out
02:12of nowhere what'd you call me a I was feeding my son so I had time but you attacked me first
02:20is all what I'm trying to say soft as puppy shit perhaps something yeah I believe that's
02:25what you said you said I was soft as puppy shit and so no lies there but then you try
02:32to claim that you could bench more than me yeah that was based on really nothing I don't
02:37know how much you can bet you're you're like Will Hunting you're not any good part of Will
02:42Hunting you're not a genius you can't solve math problems that nobody else in the world
02:46can solve I know you're not more than you you're not loyal like gorillas to your best
02:53friends you're simply a weaker man than I am maybe maybe maybe physically but we just
03:03talked about how much we bench we won't say I won't shame Packard on this but no Jay benches
03:09to say I bench more than he does and I should have known that from what happened in the low
03:14post when we play one-on-one Jay hasn't been in the gym for a year plus I've been in the
03:20gym I just I just did a 45 minute peloton ride you haven't been weights for the past
03:25nine months when's the last time you actually benched probably like a couple months ago okay
03:33at that time he did bench more than I am putting up right now and so a kudos to you Jay you are
03:40the strongest man with a t-rex arms on the podcast it helps so much to have a tiny wingspan I'm 6
03:462 with a 510 wingspan which is impossible and I have a longer it really helps you with the
03:52bench press some would say the strength of that could be Ryan Williams is that could have been
03:58Robin Williams is strength to the strength and he doesn't look like no one would ever draft you
04:05because your negative wingspan is all I'm trying to say no one would ever play me in a d3 basketball
04:10game so yeah I don't think I was getting drafted I think I mean after the push-up contest last year
04:16I think that's like in the office remember those never were aired I lost tape I did push-ups for
04:24no reason you didn't do push-ups you couldn't do the challenge if I remember correctly I know
04:31he's got no I you're lying on my name he did it no he finished it I don't even remember what the
04:37challenge was but that's just shows how memory 50 push-ups during the show it wasn't a hard
04:41challenge oh yeah maybe it would have been for you yeah I'm pretty sure you failed though if I
04:45remember correctly you couldn't do it and then I bench press more than you if it's just putting it
04:50on the record let the record reflect I'm stronger than J he's a weak man you guys want to go a new
04:58segment the debut of a new segment we could start fastball talk now first time using that one that's
05:11a guy I need to hear that sound again did you make that sound yourself no Sean did Sean made
05:23that I was I was describing what I kind of wanted to hear and he just kind of he just took exactly
05:28my example and put it into that and so this is the first time I've played that sound before but
05:33this is the first time we actually have stats with V-Rub from V-Rub no it took me back to
05:45res last time I was so looks I couldn't even come up anything yeah so two days off your guys did
05:53some random digging everyone's kind of confused what's going on with this team and so I I put
06:01up I porzingis is the guy I want to look at here and we have we know the lineup data the starting
06:07five has been crap to this point minus 10 dreadful dreadful just like literally one of the worst
06:13starting units with as played major minutes in the league like over 100 150 minutes they've played
06:20like the Pelicans during the minutes but their stars on the court the 8 and 32 pelicans it's
06:28not great not great however as I forget who was in the chat chirping at me the shooting
06:36discrepancies are crazy now it's up to 27% the Celtics are shooting from three with that group
06:42and 46% for their opponents which will normalize on both ends and probably swing more towards the
06:50Celtics way just because they have such great shooters in that but for now it's they're in
06:55shambles total shame so the shooting has been bad the defense with the starting group has also
07:02been bad unrelated like and shot look wise you can go argue that however you want but so I kind
07:09of did a little bit of a deep dive here into the bigs and I wanted to look at the whole one big
07:14two big scenarios and see what was working what's not so far and whether we can take anything from
07:21that if that means anything to you guys did you uh did you figure out that uh playing the
07:26Mias Cato more was the answer to everything yes so that someone has has uh posited that that might
07:32be the solution to all the Celtics problems but I don't want to step on your uh you know so okay
07:39I'll start here let's talk single big here first guy I'll throw it to you guys for rankings here
07:43if you were gonna rank like as just a lone big on the floor or Horford Cornette Nemi and Porzingis
07:53who do you think would be the best who would you think would or just ranking one to four however
07:57you guys want to do I think Horford's probably been the best the starting lineup with him has
08:00been dynamite it's gotta be I wouldn't be surprised if lineups with him as a lone big have been the
08:06best corn boy is a statistical darling in terms of net rating if we're doing this in terms of pure
08:11net rating I think it's cornet Packard nailed it cornet I am the smartest man alive plus 17 as
08:22much as me bitch so Packard won j0 cornet plus 17 net rating as a soul big in 305 minutes 123
08:34offensive rating 104 106 defense right so elite offense elite defense with corn as a floor of
08:40soul big so again a lot of that's with the bench but when he has just been in there and with the
08:45starters for a few games here and there it's worked really well second has been Horford plus 11 net
08:52rating he's been perfectly great as with whether it's at the starters or with bench units as a
08:59soul big Nemi plus 10 net rating as a soul big also in 264 minutes so a pretty decent sample size
09:07and then we get to KP and again this is kind of mirrors what the starting five is a minus 8.9
09:14net rating in 231 minutes so the single big is working as long as it's not KP as the single
09:22big so far this season is that is that a statistical anomaly or is that something that needs to be kept
09:29a closer eye on here well I think it's a statistical anomaly 100% but but it's also
09:37indicative of what's happened so far but not predict yes yes right like he came back he's
09:42not in great shape they have to adjust to him because he plays totally different style the
09:48because of that I think the three-point shooting on their end has totally gone away because of that
09:55because how poorly they're playing offense with Chris stops on the court I think the defensive
09:59effort has waned and and they're also during those minutes giving up more threes because
10:06Chris stops just sags in the paint a lot of the time and I think the combination of all those
10:13things has produced what is to now a telling stat but I don't think this other should be worried
10:22about that the only worry is that this stretch extends long enough and gets people frustrated
10:28enough that it leads to other issues okay but when does it stop being small sample size and
10:35start being a concern like at what point does like yeah this is indicative of bad play but
10:42if you continue doing bad play the sample size just grows and I mean Chris taps I think said
10:49himself he's still playing his way back into shape do you think it's just a like him like
10:53not being ready for the the season he's a guy who came back way earlier from injury than we
10:58like anyone but he's also been hurt like three times since then and and so it's just a combination
11:06of when he came back he wasn't in game shape obviously because he was out for so long and
11:12then he hasn't really been able to play himself into a rhythm or into game shape sense because
11:19he's just been in and out of the lineup ever since so I got go ahead no no I think that's
11:27offensively I agree if you J like the hurricane way there defensively is where I'm actually
11:32worried with KP because I think the defense around him is also taking a step back this
11:37year like and then you throw him into that mix where I think that again if you go back to when
11:43they went into last season what's the one thing I think a lot of us are worried about KP is like
11:47oh how's this gonna work defensively and he exceeded expectations by far last year and now
11:54this year again he's working his way back in but he's been playing a lot of big minutes in these
11:58games like he's already 30 35 minutes like Joe is trying to get him out there he's played pretty
12:03well he said what three straight double doubles a row here but the defense is not like improving
12:09as with as has gone along here so that's and you can this shooting anomalies offensively is one
12:16thing but defensively it's hard to see so much so in this seven to six stretch opponents are
12:23shooting forty three point five percent from three with Chris stops on the court okay that will never
12:32sustain no matter how badly you play defense that will not remain the same but what if you could
12:38play the worst defense in NBA history and that's coming way down well what if it's 38% instead of
12:4646% like what if it's like oh we can switch everything with all our other bigs on the
12:51court and we not putting two on the ball and we're not giving up as many open shots with other bigs
12:57like Al Horford with Chris stops we got to do some other defense because he's not moving around well
13:02we don't want to put him on the perimeter like I agree with you that the percentage is way higher
13:06than you would anticipate but it still could be the Celtics are just giving up more open looks
13:12than they would with other bigs out there because of just like movement limitations where with Chris
13:18taps is at this point but that's how they played last year I gave up a ton of threes last season
13:25they intentionally gave up a lot of three-point attempts which they seem to be doing with Chris
13:30tops on the court they were just really smart about it this time sometimes they're being smart
13:36about and like there's not a Murray just flames them and so I I agree like so far the defense
13:45there has been an issue I agree there are certain limitations defensively when Chris tops is on a
13:51court but I really everything we saw last season suggests that the Celtics defense can play at a
14:00super high level with Chris tops on the court and a month and a half sample size right now during
14:10which their numbers are actually pretty good like is not gonna set let me convince me to say that
14:18they're screwed defensively with Chris tops on the court just I'm not ready to do that I will not say
14:23that I think that I think everything will work itself out as long as they stay level-headed and
14:32work through this and eventually get to the other side and and he has to stay healthy but he has to
14:37be able to play and stay in the lineup and figure things out with the rest of the starters figure
14:44things out with everybody else they have to give themselves time to do that which maybe that doesn't
14:51happen but but right right now as bad as it's been and it's been really bad I don't think it's too
14:57concerning I'm not I'm on like the fan I don't think it's concerning yet but like talk like if
15:05we get to February and we haven't seen either these categories move much then that's when I
15:11start to get worried so now we'll bring this now to the double big situation which I think is a
15:17fascinating component of this I'll throw it to you guys again like Al KP Al Cornett Al Qaeda
15:28Al Qaeda okay I'll need me okay to write porzingis Cornett who do you guys think has the best net
15:41rating out of those four combinations while I'm guessing I'm just gonna say J was a little scared
15:49where I was going with that Al Qaeda joke and so no I wasn't I know you in your eyes you were a
15:54fearful man I think everybody needs to watch the tape on this one I was just smiling it's
16:01Cornett it's Cornett Al it's Al Cornett I would say Al Cornett followed by Al Nemi both of those
16:10are great lineups plus 12 for Al Cornett plus 12.7 for Al Nemi the winner porzingis Cornett
16:19weird a plus 32 net rating only minutes only 54 minutes 54 minutes so it's not not I mean
16:29it's nothing it's not a real sample size and also but the bigger big one is Al KP is plus
16:36nine net rating so all these don't start right that's the question so that's right that's what's
16:42on three beginning of last season guys there was so big who's gonna start and Al KP was like a
16:49legitimate like I was in play for a while until Al said you know what I'm gonna step aside you guys
16:55get to roll here considering they're clearly at their best this year in double bigs is when does
17:03that does that be ever become a consideration and before we get into this Bay Packer do you
17:08want to go talk about our our friends from prize before we dive too much into this but I think big
17:16picture wise I'm wondering like if if this should be coming up in meetings right now as a potential
17:22adjustment in the next few weeks if nothing changes with the single big with KP you know
17:26if if they do start Luke Cornett I'm gonna be there if that's gonna be the thing and if there's
17:33there's gonna be a way I'm gonna get there it's going to be through the game time app game time

18:23price guaranteed I think it's very hard to like discuss starting lineups just considering how
18:31many people have been in and out of the lineup for the Celtics this year if you go double bigs
18:38there's drew immediately go to the bench then if you really start cooking with gas you go double
18:45bigs and start Luke Cornett I mean you're not doing that like Cornett we're not going that
18:49Albert well KP would be the even though you're right logistically would make sense so from a
18:53minutes management perspective there is a degree of thing like you start cornet that way you can
18:58manage both those guys minutes better but that would be it'd be a double switch like that would
19:03be I mean add credit but that would be wild stuff do you guys want to hear a crazy crazy step please
19:12holiday three-pointers 28.8% 61.9 oh my god holy shit so what minus and 33% hey like what how is
19:30that possible how and obviously the sample size of corner threes is gonna be very small and it's
19:37gonna be volatile because of the small sample size but he'd never miss those last year and he
19:44is constantly missing them now and yeah well that's why I was like if he's missing those
19:51KP's shooting what 32 33% from three Jalen is been in a rut from three for a while and that's
19:58where you get the offense with that starting group where it's been for the last five ten games which
20:04has been garbage all right so Jay you're I'm making you Joe Missoula you're in charge of
20:12putting together a regular sure we can go with that put in your your chips your coins turn them
20:19in and are you making a change to I guess the rotation are you making a change starting line
20:25are you starting double bigs are you going back to Jalen Brown playing all of the first quarter so
20:29Jason Tatum can get that early second quarter minutes with the bench like are there any changes
20:35you're doing right now to the rotation to try and get the Celtics out of this little funk not the
20:42dance group but the downplay and performance as of late not yet not yet but I would be very open
20:54with the players about why and and my reason for that would be that they just have to figure this
21:01out like obviously all the data says that Chris stops lineups with him as a lone big have been
21:10much worse at the starting lineup with Chris stops has been detrimental that like and if you were just
21:18to base it on this tiny sample size it would be easy to make a change but it's not about the tiny
21:24sample size it's about reaching the potential for this group and I think it's obvious that
21:31Christophe's Porzingis is a major major part of that and for this group to reach its peak then
21:39you have to be able to figure it out with that starting lineup you have to be able to figure out
21:43with Christophe's Porzingis as the only big man on the court you just have to be able to figure all
21:47that stuff out and so as painful as it is now and I don't know how long it will remain this way where
21:55the Celtics are playing inconsistent basketball and shooting like shit and their offense isn't
22:00working and their defense is getting gashed from behind the three-point arc but you have to figure
22:06it out and I think if it's playoffs and something like this happens where you're clearly performing
22:13differently like that's a different story you have to have a much quicker trigger but right now
22:18in the middle of January it's just something that they're going to have to play through
22:24but isn't it the coach's responsibility to like put them in the best position to win it like
22:30I agree with you it's not his what I mean it is his responsibility to put them in the best
22:35position to win but to me it's his responsibility to put them in the best position to win a
22:39championship not necessarily to to play well against the Raptors on Wednesday night or to
22:45play well against the Pelicans on Sunday night but was that with Al at center is your best position
22:51to win like the championship I think that's possible I mean two years now they've been
22:56fantastic without in the core obviously Christophe's missed a lot of time last year and they didn't
23:01really skip a beat in the playoffs that said like to me when Christophe's is at his best
23:10and the Celtics like there's no answer for them there's nothing you can do against the Celtics
23:16when they're at their best and they're operating well and Christophe's is pulverizing
23:20smaller defenders down low and Tatum and Jalen and everybody else is playing off that
23:26there's nothing you can do and and I think it's worth continuing to stub your toe a little bit
23:35now to to later on be able to run freely I agree I'll give him the rest of January I would that's
23:42like I'm with you and Janet that friend of like you make a point of this to start like we're
23:47giving you these couple weeks to figure this out more but then at that point if we get to the trade
23:52deadline and there's nothing the needle hasn't really moved with the starters with that grouping
23:58then I'm thinking about making the adjustment and not like I said I'd probably be more entitled to
24:03just go double big in the starting five and and move through in that situation I think that's the
24:08easier switch but and to your point 2J like you need to save Al regardless like you can't even if
24:15he is the best option right now like you can't be playing him 30-35 minutes a night as a center
24:20period because that's just stupid in the middle of January to do and you obviously want KP
24:27to be able to eat up those minutes anyway but also find his his form at the same time I'll
24:36throw this out to you Packard do you want to guess what the Celtics record is over the last two seasons
24:43with Al Porzingis on the floor well pretty damn good I would have to guess I'm guessing
24:50winner well how many games 48 games 48 games I'm gonna guess they're
24:5837 and 11 40 and 8 oh wow so is Chris Stapps the sixth man of the year oh my god how pissed
25:08off would paid Pritchard be if they just made converted Chris Stapps to that guy getting
25:12factor complicated factor to any to any switch there that would certainly pull up his candidacy
25:15to some degree that would be hilarious do you think Chris Stapps would accept that role like
25:20I feel like he's the happiest man alive but like I don't uh he's also got some pride there I don't
25:26know like would he come off the bench he did did it in the finals but that was because he's coming
25:29off an injury and this is why this is why repeating one reason why repeating is really difficult
25:37because for so many reasons what worked last year won't necessarily work again but you still have
25:45to fight the human nature of knowing this is how we did it this is how we used to be at our best
25:50and and maybe we have to shift a little bit and to Joe Mazula's credit I think he understands that
25:56he's been adamant from day one that despite bringing basically every key player back
26:03actually not basically every single key player back let's not slander O'Shea percent like that
26:07was not slander it's not slander if it's the truth you should know that Mr. Lawyer I could
26:11argue but they uh they just sometimes you need to find a new way and I don't think they necessarily
26:19need to like scrap the old way at all I think that might end up being their their best way
26:24but right now it's very clearly not and they've been off to bad starts like almost every game
26:30it's it's wild to see how you're equivocating like a motherfucker right now you're saying they
26:37need to try and adjust and do things a new way but then they also need time to see if the old
26:41way is going to work because I think I think at the end of the day playing Chris Hopsworth's Angus
26:47is going to be the best way for this group forward but even in crunch time games don't actually like
26:54do you want to close if Al or KP at like the end of like winnable game I feel like the one thing
26:59I'll give I think that becomes a question if you continue scuffling with any school
27:03going should now though we've gotten to a point like he's forced fed that lineup in crunch time
27:07minutes and enough games here that it's been done again after it's been taught me to have
27:11both halves like in the course of a game is I understand you start a game of it but if it's
27:15been bad in the first two stints of a game you don't need to automatically go back to that at
27:18the end of the game for like the fifth game in the row like if I'm taking a wider view
27:24then like what happens in one game global view JK I like I'm okay with playing bad basketball
27:32at the end of a game giving away a game in crunch time if it means you get reps Joe said a couple
27:38of times it's just training camp right now for that group and they're not really practicing much
27:43there they don't have opportunities at practice to work with the starters in like a training camp
27:48setting so you're getting your reps in the game so far they've played 138 minutes together you
27:53could do that in a week of practice during training camp you could get all those reps together in
27:58training camp but if you're giving if you're giving up stints because you're trying to win
28:03a close game against the pelicans or something like that like I just don't think that's smart
28:08I think you need to iron everything out learn how to play again and and I think they'll get
28:16there the the they're too talented they're too good they're too unselfish not to get there
28:23it's going to happen to me I just think right now it's just a process to figure that out and
28:32like it's just kind of it's gotten been longer than I expected it's it's taken more pain than
28:39I expected but you know I think they've been realistic with themselves Porzingis day after
28:46day he comes out and he's like this is my fault guys like I came back and I'm out of shape and
28:51everyone else is adjusting to me and it's been tough on our whole team and I think they understand
28:58what's going on they're realistic with themselves and if they stay that way then everything will be
29:03okay it's he's had 16 games though now I know it's been in and out but like you can only
29:09lean on like the training camp stuff for like a certain amount of like 130 like that's not nothing
29:16like that's like a stiffing mountain this is they played all together last year too so you
29:21you would just scrap it you'd be like no I wouldn't scrap it I would say I'm talking about
29:24luke or in crunch time I'm talking about like we don't have to prepare for the playoffs at
29:29all we don't have to get these guys used to playing high leverage moments we're just going
29:32to go with luke or net in the final three minutes of games even if it's game seven of a playoff
29:36series luke or net where's al horford in this situation here we go like I mean this is what
29:41I'm talking about saying at the end of a closed game if the starting lineup looks like crap at
29:45the beginning of the first half and the second half I'm going to close with al over kp like
29:50and you can still get the reps for the starters and other parts of the game you can still get you
29:54can do both but you also want to win games and build some kind of cohesion for the rest of the
29:59starting five because it's not just kp we're talking about you're like other guys around kp
30:02have looked like crap of kp2 and how much everybody feeds into that like that's that's
30:07an open question but the stars of al have been amazing this year like that lineup has been
30:13far and away the best lamp in this team and so to ignore that for to get an extra five minutes
30:20for a unit that has not looked good all year time after time that's where I'm saying like
30:25you need to draw a line there like you can do both you can win games and get get the practice
30:29in for the starting five and I think they need to look a little closer at that some of us aren't
30:35okay with just playing bad basketball jay some of us you know uh want good basketball uh like you
30:42can you can have better process if the if they continue to uh fail in the process you got to
30:47switch up the process somehow and so there are many ways you can switch up a process without
30:51changing the lineup he's talking about changing the closing line he's talking about winning
30:56basketball games at the end of the day the biggest flaw in the in the kaizen growth mindset
31:02uh lifestyle is that you're applying it to basketball where there is always a result
31:08uh you either win the game or you lose the game it's not like football where there's a tie uh
31:13and so I think that's a a at some point Joe Mazzulla has to be the one to be like this isn't
31:21working and we need to make a pivot and I understand that there's the working through
31:25the process and trying to give KP time but at the end at the other side of the coin you have
31:32to start building winning habits and start like going to things that are actually working the more
31:36you just have a um failed all this is like we're why it feels like some overreaction because they're
31:4328 and 11 and still like have a net rating over 10 and so they're still a very very solid basketball
31:50team um but at the some point like if you continue to struggle you're not kind of building
31:56up the habits of a team that's gonna go deep in in the playoffs and you can't continue to just
32:02play poor basketball over and over again and I not expect that to bleed over um into your kind
32:08of playoff I I agree with you guys there should be a point when he considers all that stuff
32:14deeply I just don't think they'll ever get to that point because I think they'll just figure
32:18it out before that yeah no that's fair like do we need a do we need a code word for like when
32:22they've reached that point um I think for this people in still potable chat come up with a
32:28come up with a word when you think you've reached the panic button yeah just like where we um where
32:33we think possibly uh you guys think on that code word and I'll tell uh the fine folks about our

33:54jay mazula I made him head coach I'm going to make you president of basketball operations
33:59you got a jayden springer contract and a couple first round picks what are you going to do with
34:06it and why is it trading for walker kessler the only answer that I've seen out on the internet
34:11danny ainge get on the line uh am I taking crazy pills they're going to trade for a fifth big
34:16like it just it why has that been the go-to trade of Celtics twitter because he makes less because
34:23you can trade that's the only intriguing player that makes under like four and a half million
34:28dollars a year that's probably available that would match with jayden springer um plus he's
34:33a danny ainge player people will have rumors about him and think he's on the block just how it
34:41goes this is how it goes is there anyone out there that is like maybe at one what position are you
34:47targeting is it why don't they just resign o shape or set bring his energy back into the fold
34:53um maybe Lonnie Walker still wants to play for the Celtics what is is there anything
34:58brad stevens can do in terms of changing this roster to give this team a jolt or is
35:05it just a matter of fact of uh the guys on the court need to be better yeah you trade
35:13christos portingez you just take care of this lineup issue no um I think realistically
35:19no anything they do they're they're not touching the rotation
35:24anything you're bringing in is just supplemental and as jay and I have like talked about in class
35:29week it's like you also if you're talking about a wing like I wrote about givenchy green after the
35:33game on monday just as like again he's a minimum guy he's just an option on that front if you don't
35:39if you're not going to play jordan walsh but at the same time I think a very strong case can be
35:42made play jordan walsh like see what these guys can give you and again now I guess that's kind
35:49of a byproduct of them going double big more now because that's been working is that there's
35:55certainly not minutes for jordan walsh when everyone's healthy and there's barely enough
35:58minutes for sam hauser when everyone's healthy and they're playing double bigs for 24 to 30
36:03minutes a game so yeah it's honestly anything brad stevens is doing is not going to really
36:10impact the rotation when it's healthy in all likelihood you're just kind of going look maybe
36:16getting a guy that joe you trust that joel will play when guys are out so you can rest drew more
36:23or you know if tatum brown to games here they're one of those guys that hurts you're okay but
36:29outside of like you know as far as i'm concerned if you're gonna make a move it has to be for a
36:34former celtic so that's either giovante green yabu or tice those are those are your options
36:38yabu's not not on the block yabu is the best player in the sixers in the entire city of
36:42philadelphia right they can't afford that's a sad part like they should but do they do they give up
36:48by the trade deadline will be the question like are they so bad their schedule is just gonna get
36:52tougher now and so if it's like they they do have some semi-inceptive that like if they shut mb down
36:58maybe it turns into a fire cell for them this year and they just take what they can get for
37:02the expiring guys like like even though like you said he's been really good for them they
37:05clearly can't afford to lose them if they want to win you can't trade your best player in the
37:08middle of a season people that's gonna be like the send adam silver in to take control of the
37:13team again yeah speaking of adam silver coming in and taking control of the team uh he basically
37:20just uh i don't know this is a big news story here in philadelphia but uh the sixers had this
37:26whole deal to build a new stadium in the middle of center city uh right in downtown and then recently
37:34uh adam silver basically just came in and was like no you're gonna partner with comcast who
37:40owns the flyers and obviously is related to nbc and you're going to do a deal with them
37:47and it's a weird deal where both it's like a 50 50 merger not merger a 50 50 deal to build a new
37:53stadium presumably for the flyers and the sixers um and it's right after nbc has signed this new
38:01uh kind of contract to broadcast the nba it's just very interesting and the thing that's kind
38:08of makes it interesting is everyone in the city of the philadelphia including the mayor was like
38:14this is going in centers uh what about that super shitty eagles fan oh that guy he got banned from
38:20all all the games um but that's just that's just kind of attending to uh you don't mess with the
38:26birds here it's a real cult it's it's kind of sneaky uh tip i could do all my uh grocery
38:32shopping during i got a bone to pick with with everyone talking about that video that guy was
38:38terrible first of all that guy was like a horrible horrible human being however how as a husband are
38:45you just sitting there like filming the guy how he's a youtuber he's a youtuber he's got content
38:51brain that was pathetic wait i haven't seen the video yet so the husband of the wife that was
38:58getting like harassed was filming it yeah these two packers fans were filming the guy called her
39:04a c word he called her like just horrible names and the guy was just filming it calmly
39:10put the phone down and throw fists what are you talking about defend your wife i saw a quote from
39:17him that was like that was a tough situation he had friends there like two other guys or something
39:23i don't care i don't care if he had guns on him if he says that stuff you gotta throw
39:29he could have he could have a knife at your neck and you gotta throw hands
39:34i was i don't condone violence as a city official uh in the state city and county philadelphia i
39:40cannot uh confirm or deny you just can't allow it that guy would way across the line i'm with
39:47joe mazula on this one like sometimes you just gotta let guys fight it's a coin situation yeah
39:52i mean if you turn in a coin then it's um i'm not gonna personally press charges um
39:59to get back to the philly thing i think it's just interesting in the context of
40:04who are the celtics new owners going to be because is it going to be some i don't know
40:09it feels like adam silver is basically just able to come in and dictate terms of the entire city of
40:14philadelphia and their redevelopment because he wanted his mbc partner to uh make some more money
40:20out of their stadium and we got what a new story from himmelsbach today that they're going to open
40:25up the bidding process on january 23rd for new potential celtics owners this is all wild rampant
40:32speculation but we have no idea who that person is going to be but their relationship with the
40:38league office and the other owners could like it has this like bigger implications
40:45i don't think the celtics are like this always comes up i don't think they're close like they're
40:48not going to leave at least in the short term to create their own building but like
40:53if you're in the money making business which presumably you are if you're building uh if
40:57you're buying the celtics it's serves you better to have your own arena i don't know if there's
41:03really any analysis or any actual question in this thing but i'm just uh you know pointing
41:08things out it's it's going to be interesting the interaction between owners and the league office
41:14and especially we haven't seen the new ownership thing for the celtics have any real impact on
41:19this season i haven't heard any real rumors recently um but that since that's officially
41:24going to start soon um it could become a talking point as we get like do this again in a month
41:32yeah a lot could shift depending on who the owner is how the owner wants to move forward
41:38that's a enormous unknown right now for the celtics the entire celtics organization
41:48and like it could become like a talking point like if it's someone
41:51like i don't know i'm just throwing like if it's bezos or something or is this like someone who's
41:56or is this like someone who's like at all controversial it just becomes a thing that
42:00you guys are like have to ask the players about and then it's just like another thing
42:05and maybe they rally around the team because they hate the new potential owner and it's a
42:09really thing that galvanizes everyone but it is just another thing that i might be ignorant but
42:15why is bezos controversial um people generally don't love uh billionaires who hoard their they
42:22won't love any owner of this exactly that's what i'm trying to say is that any chance to be a
42:27polarizing anyone who gets put forward who has enough money to buy the celtics probably has uh
42:33some skeletons in their closet or has been uh in charge of some sort of corporation that has
42:37treated someone poorly and so there's going to be some sort of kerfuffle or brouhaha uh or
42:45something that creates some sort of story and it's just it starts in what in eight days basically
42:53so um it's just gonna be we're gonna have to sit back and take notice and figure out like
42:59what that exactly that controversy is i doubt it has really that many impact on the court um i am
43:05excited and i feel bad for the first uh journalist guy in the media room asked joe mazula about it
43:12um because he was gonna he's gonna dismiss it very quickly but someone it is enough of a story
43:17that someone's going to have to ask it and i look forward to that interaction that will be very fun
43:24it is i mean the the reaction in the short term of the season if they the deal like i think it
43:30was like like i think again they're trying to close the first part of the deal i imagine at
43:35some point in the next two or three months while the season's ongoing so that'll be a backdrop but
43:39as far as this team goes it's all like everything the arena stuff whatever they do in the future
43:44that's all gonna be like long long term down the road situation stuff what will be really
43:48interesting is now is for like this summer situation which we're out of the gate the
43:54money stuff's gonna be right there are they want to come in as heroes and say keep everyone together
44:00and we're gonna pay a bazillion dollars truly heroic right literally like do something that
44:06people love bezos if bezos does that i'll be buy everything from amazon right so i mean that is
44:12in play of the way to do that or and if they need to strip it down all the questions we're
44:17talking about in this podcast become relevant to future decisions and not yeah so far in the future
44:24decisions how do you how do you evaluate this season where the celtics have not been able to
44:30play at their highest level with chris osborne's how do you evaluate this season where drew holiday
44:37at age 34 is it 33 34 whatever it is is shooting 34.3 percent from the field and has dealt with
44:46some nagging injuries how do you evaluate all that stuff when to keep this group together
44:52you're going to need to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in salary and luxury tax like those are
44:59going to be real questions and real determining factors for who stays on this roster moving
45:04forward if the whoever the next owner is doesn't have unlimited pockets chris stapps is the biggest
45:13one because he immediately becomes an expiring contract next season it's like do you trade him
45:20because if whether or not he shows up right now they already showed that they can kind of win a
45:23championship without him and if he continues that gets harder if al horford is 39 and like
45:31it just gets harder and harder so harvard's a free agent oh he's coming back i can't imagine
45:38going anywhere back to philly but my man but then listen if he keeps like this he could
45:45he's playing at a discount right now there's no question about that um and that's a guy who's
45:51always gotten paid gotten really good contracts over the course of his career i'd say this last
45:57two he took a nice little discount for this last two-year extension but that'll be another
46:01fascinating subplot there knowing that every single dollar spent is actually like five or six dollars
46:07when you're adding to the roster at that point it's going to be fascinating whatever happens
46:12we'll be here to talk about it and bring analysis to you uh just like we'll be here the rest of the
