00:22UN experts demanded an end to the protection of israel's international allies so the
00:26zionist regime can be held accountable for the genocide it commits on Gaza
00:34In Ecuador, the National Electoral Council rejected a request to discuss the irregularity
00:38that President Obama intends to commit by staying in office while campaigning for re-election
00:47Hello, welcome from the south. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Televisual Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:52We begin with the news. South Pacific countries and Asia are among the first worldwide to bid
00:58farewell to the year 2024 and welcome the year 2025. Kiribati was the first country to celebrate
01:04the arrival of the new year 2025 with fireworks and festivities. The city of Auckland in New Zealand
01:10joined this worldwide celebration with thousands of people on the traditional countdown and call
01:14for fireworks launched from the country's tallest structure, Sky Tower. Likewise, other regions such
01:19as Samoa, Tonga, Chatham Islands, Fiji, and Australia celebrated with their families the
01:24traditional arrival of the new year. Around the world, people entered the new year at 38 different
01:36times during 26 hours. The Kiritimati Atole Aleas Christmas Island was the first to bring in the
01:42new year, locating Kiribati, a 33-island country in the Central Pacific Ocean. Other nations that
01:50already welcomed 2025 were New Zealand and Australia. Some people enjoyed toasting twice
01:55for the new year, so they crossed overtime zone borders. They can travel from Sweden to Finland,
02:00from New Zealand to Cook Islands, from Guam to Honolulu, among other cases. Finally, Kiribati
02:07into January 2, 2025, before uninhabited Howland and Baker Islands leave 2024 for their 26-hour
02:15time difference. The islands, which are officially part of the U.S. territory, are located in the
02:20Pacific Ocean. The Indian Space Research Organization described Tuesday as a success,
02:31the liftoff of the Spadex mission, the two-satellite docking experiment that
02:36will advance future manned spaceflight. Some goals of the Spadex missions are to enhance
02:41and demonstrate the technology required for rendezvous, which involves docking and undocking
02:45of small spacecraft in a low circular orbit around the Earth. The project counts on a novel
02:51processor that facilitates determining accurately the relative position and velocity of small
02:57spacecraft. Moreover, the missions serve as a test for the small satellite launch vehicles
03:03that India started producing for commercial purposes.
03:06Furthermore, it will be paramount for future lunar expeditions on the Bharatiya Antarctic Station.
03:18Vietnam's capital will raise its stakes in the tourism sector by 2025. Hanoi expects
03:25to welcome 30 million tourists, including 7 million foreign visitors. The numbers compare
03:30with the 2021 figures. This year, Hanoi welcomed over 27.8 million travelers,
03:3612.7 percent more than in 2023. According to the Municipal Department of Tourism,
03:41in 2024 revenue generated by the sector totaled $4.43 billion, a year-on-year rise of 18.3 percent.
03:49The Vietnamese capital introduced more than 20 new night tourism activities
03:53this year and developed seven pedestrian streets with culinary and cultural activities.
04:00Meanwhile, in the United States, over 44,000 people have been detained in the southern border
04:08with Mexico during the month of December. According to the U.S. Customs and Border
04:13Protection Office, the figure could increase slightly in the last hours of 2024. The data
04:18corresponds to the statistics that have been maintained throughout the year. The Border
04:22Office assures that the levels registered since July are maintained and points out that December
04:26becomes the sixth consecutive month with figures lower than those registered in the monthly average
04:31of 2019. In this context, the Mexican government's immigration policy has achieved a 75 percent
04:37reduction in regular crossings of its northern border. And in the United States, California
04:47farmers are increasingly alarmed by President-elect Donald Trump's deportation plans,
04:52which threaten to disrupt the agricultural workforce. In the Central Valley, where nearly
04:56half of farm workers are undocumented, many farmers rely on this labor for essential tasks
05:01like hand-picking crops, while some daily farmers remain skeptical about the likelihood of mass
05:07deportations. Fruit and nut growers fear that such actions could lead to significant labor shortages,
05:14resulting in wasted harvests and rising food prices. Many farmers who support Trump now face
05:20grim reality that his policies could devastate their operations. Advocates warn that mass
05:25deportations would not only harm the agricultural sector, but also exacerbate existing issues of
05:29food insecurity and inflation. We don't know what mass deportation is going to mean.
05:41We don't know when it's going to start. He said it's going to be in day one.
05:45I don't know where he's going to start because if there are millions of people here,
05:49he obviously can't cover the whole country at one time. I don't know where he's going to go.
05:55Hopefully, it gives us time to reach out to the administration and talk to them about
06:02immigration for our essential workers, like our farm workers, that we can't have deportations
06:11here because it would disrupt our food supply for the country. We really don't think that
06:17anybody wants that. We're going to have a short break coming up, but first remember,
06:22you can join us on TikTok at TELUS English, where you'll find news in different formats,
06:26news updates, and much more. We'll be right back. Stay with us.
06:47Welcome back. For a joint statement, more than 11 experts at the Service of the United Nations
07:09demanded an end to the protection of Israel's international allies so the Zionist regime
07:14can be held accountable for the genocide it commits on Gaza. The communique highlights the
07:19lack of responsibility of the Tel Aviv government for having openly defied international humanitarian
07:25law. To this end, experts from all fields listed with data the extensive number of war crimes
07:31perpetrated by the Israeli troops, among them murder, torture, sexual violence, forced displacement,
07:36destruction of hospitals, schools, and the use of starvation as a weapon of war. Crimes are part of
07:42the host of atrocities that Netanyahu's administration commits thanks to the protection
07:47provided by governments such as the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, among others.
07:59In this place, Palestinians within the Gaza Strip are facing a difficult situation as heavy
08:04rains have flooded dozens of tents in Deir al-Bala, downtown, and in southern al-Bawasi. These rains
08:10are accompanied by thunderstorms and falling temperatures, aggravating the situation for the
08:14nearly 1.6 million Gazans illegally displaced to make shift shelters. Gazan authorities report
08:21that at least 110,000 out of the 135,000 tents in which the refugees are staying are unfit for use.
08:29As a result, thousands are subjected to rain and low temperatures while the health system is slowly
08:34destroyed by the unicidal forces.
08:42The outer tent, which we were using as a kitchen, collapsed,
08:45and inside the tent, we were submerged in water and the ground became slippery.
08:57I appeal to all Arab and foreign countries to try to save us,
09:00and to immediately take the initiative to stop and end the war.
09:05We, as a Palestinian people, are tired.
09:09The water has submerged us, the tents have been blown away.
09:14All night long we have been holding on to our tents to cover ourselves.
09:19Where could we possibly go?
09:25On Tuesday, Yemeni Houthi forces launched a drone and missile attack on the USS Harry S. Truman
09:30aircraft carrier. Precisely, the spokesman for the Yemeni Armed Forces, Yahya Sareh,
09:36informed that in a joint operation by the Navy, missile forces and air force had managed to hit
09:41the 9th U.S. nuclear aircraft carrier. The military spokesman also said they had foiled an attack by
09:47Washington forces on their territory and unveiled they had carried out an operation hours earlier
09:52using Palestinian Class II hypersonic missiles on Israeli territory.
10:01The South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport briefed Tuesday having identified
10:08174 out of the 179 fatal victims from the December 30th plane crash at Muan airport
10:15in the southern region. Experts are still working on identifying all those five corpses,
10:19but those 174 remainings have been handed over to their relatives. Authorities explained that
10:25the bodies are being preserved in a temporary cold storage facility installed in a hangar
10:29of the airport to keep them until their families take them. On this incident,
10:34just two people, both flight attendants, managed to survive after the plane
10:38crashed into a concrete wall. So far, both black boxes from flight 2216,
10:44the flight data and recorder and cockpit voice recorder have been found.
10:4911 accident investigators from the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board and eight
11:03joint investigators from the U.S. will be dispatched to the scene and begin the accident
11:07investigation starting today. Among the eight joint investigators from the U.S. side,
11:13one is from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, three are from the U.S.
11:17National Transportation Safety Board, and four from the aircraft manufacturer Boeing.
11:28Regarding the black box, the test and analysis center has completed cleaning the surface
11:33contamination and is currently checking its condition. However, it was found out that the
11:38flight data recorder has lost the connector of the data storage unit and the power supply unit.
11:44As a result, we are conducting a technical review to find a method to extract the data.
11:54Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed the nation in a New Year's speech broadcast highlighting
11:59China's roadmap for 2025 and stressing that the current world challenges may be overcome with hard
12:03work. In 2025, we will fully complete the 14th five-year
12:14plan. We must implement more proactive policies, focus on high-quality development,
12:21promote high-level scientific and technological self-reliance,
12:24and maintain the good momentum of economic and social development.
12:30The current economic system faces some new problems, challenges from the uncertainty of
12:34the external environment, and pressure from the transformation of new and old economic drivers,
12:39but these can be overcome through hard work.
12:45On Tuesday, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed a series of attacks on Ukrainian territory with
12:49high-precision weapons. Russian forces shelled a military airfield and an enterprise of the
12:54military industry. Moscow forces also used unmanned aerial vehicles. The Defense Ministry
12:59added that the Black Sea Fleet destroyed eight unmanned Ukrainian vessels, while its anti-aircraft
13:05defenses shot down more than 103 drones. Ukraine claimed in a morning report that
13:11its forces shot down a Russian helicopter and called the operation a historic event.
13:21Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a New Year's congratulations message to Latin American
13:25leaders who are allies of the country. Among the leaders congratulated by the Russian President
13:29are the President of Bolivia Luis Arce, the President of Brazil Luis Ignacio La Silva,
13:34the President of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro, President of Cuba Miguel Díaz-Canel, and
13:38President of Nicaragua Daniel Ortega. Putin also sent a telegram of congratulations to the leader
13:45of the Cuban revolution Raúl Castro Ruz. Russian Federation has traditionally maintained alliance
13:50relations with these countries and has recently stepped up its efforts to deepen cooperation with
13:55the region. We now have a second short break coming up but before we invite you to visit

14:33Welcome back. Ecuador's National Electoral Council has rejected a request to discuss the
14:41irregularity that President Novoa intends to commit by staying in office while campaigning
14:46for re-election. The request made by Councilwoman Elena Najera demanded the council to decide over
14:52the application of the law in question which obliges the head of state to take an unpaid
14:56leave of absence during the campaign for re-election that starts on January 5th.
15:00Novoa has failed to comply with Article 93 of the Democratic Code in order to avoid handing
15:05over the mandate to the Vice President, Verónica Abad, as the Ecuadoran legal and constitutional
15:10framework require. In this context, after the council's decision, Najera accused her colleagues
15:16of siding with the president at the expense of democratic principles.
15:19Yes, it is important that the National Electoral Council pronounces itself by means of a resolution
15:32so that from there the compliance or non-compliance with the norm may be derived. Having said this,
15:38I know that you come to these sessions having previously discussed that you already know what
15:42is going to happen, I already anticipated it in an interview on the radio, that in general,
15:48the only counselor that is and acts alone is me. Since all of you manage yourselves through
15:53previous discussions, even the schedules you set are already agreed upon. So because of that,
15:59the citizens tell you and are aware of who is going to manage the electoral processes,
16:04because it cannot be that here interpretations are given based on
16:07relationships with whichever government is in power.
16:10Also in this regard, National Assembly Member Lucia Pozo referred to the conduct of Ecuadorian
16:16President Daniel Novoa, calling it an ethical fault and pointing out the legal breach it entails.
16:24No authority can go out to campaign while being an authority. That has not been seen,
16:29it is not foreseen. But even before the law, ethically it is unpresentable that they want
16:35to support the president of the republic since surely if he wants to be the president of Ecuador,
16:39surely if he wants to do it, the rest of us have to do the same, right? I find it really unconscionable,
16:46more so from the ethical standpoint, than from the legal one, with which he is also being protected.
16:52And on the other hand, you must realize the immense contradiction that exists when there
16:57is a government that is precisely proposing to eliminate the financing of political organizations,
17:03and then wants the state to fund its campaign. It is laughable, they have no logic, they have
17:10no coherence whatsoever, to the point of imposing themselves under the arrogance,
17:15under the lack of capacity to reach an agreement among them.
17:23In this context, the National Electoral Council of Ecuador approved an almost $14 million fund
17:28for the electoral campaign. Resources will be distributed in an equitable manner
17:33for leading campaigns on press, radio, television, social media, among others.
17:38The electoral activity is scheduled from January 5th to February 6th, 2025. We are going to the
17:43polls where over 13 million voters are able to elect a new Ecuadorian head of state,
17:48the 151 members of the National Assembly and five representatives to also be elected.
17:53And the Venezuelan Public Prosecutor's Office reported Monday having released 1,369 detainees
18:03who had participated in the violent riots and crimes committed after the July 28th elections.
18:08The entity explained that from December 26th to the 30th, 413 petitions had been assessed
18:14to study the cases of those involving acts of violence following the electoral process.
18:20These releases were granted under a process of respect and unrestricted
18:24observance of the principles and guarantees enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic
18:28in matters of human rights. Thus, the Public Prosecutor's Office reaffirmed
18:32its commitment to the defense of peace, justice and the rights of Venezuelans.
18:41The Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela imposed a fine of $10 million on the social platform
18:46TikTok in Latin America for being negligent in the control of content that endangers the
18:51integrity particularly of children and young people. The report with Madeline Garcia.
18:58The way was open to debate and control of the contents of TikTok's vital challenges.
19:05And the responsibility of the TikTok platform for the lack of timely control of the so-called
19:10viral challenges whose contents affect the health and lives of our children and adolescents
19:16has become evident.
19:25For this reason, the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice announced for the
19:29first time decisions against a social network for the protection of children and adolescents,
19:34victims of manipulation and violence of the videos posted on the platform,
19:38creating a precedent with TikTok.
19:41We impose on the company a fine equivalent to $10 million for not having implemented the necessary
19:48and adequate measures to prevent the dissemination of publications whose content
20:04is elusive to the so-called viral challenges in violation of the Venezuelan legal system.
20:11During 2024, two boys and a girl died when they submitted to viral challenges.
20:22These images correspond to the last goodbye of Erica, 12 years old,
20:26who lost her life when she consumed three pills as part of a TikTok viral challenge.
20:31Almost 800 minors put their lives at risk, according to figures from the scientific police.
20:36The Ministry of Education has a huge responsibility to study the issue,
20:43to give recommendations, to regulate the use of social networking technologies in schools,
20:49and also to educate not only our students, but also our teachers and the family in family schools.
21:02The last case was that of a young woman with a special condition.
21:05She was set on fire live on TikTok following the viral challenge to the whale.
21:10Seventy percent of her body suffered first-degree burns.
21:15I don't know what the TikTok is called, but my poor daughter couldn't defend herself.
21:24An awareness campaign about the danger of social networks compared to a whisper that kills
21:30and traps the minds of children and adolescents, inciting them to suicide,
21:34is promoted in Venezuela.
21:42The Supreme Court of Justice also ordered TikTok to install an office in Venezuela
21:48in order to monitor and control the contents.
21:54All this for TikTok to assume the legal responsibility of operating publicly,
21:58also establishing a fine of $10 million, which is done in relation to the victims of the families
22:02that unfortunately are in mourning as a result of these networks.
22:09Another of the five decisions is that a technical roundtable will be created with the victims'
22:14families and the money from the fine will be used to compensate the damages to those affected.
22:22President Nicolás Maduro had given an ultimatum to TikTok to restrict content that kills human
22:27beings. The network responded that it understood the concern but did not act. Now we'll have eight
22:33days to comply with the decision of the Supreme Court of Justice. If it does not do so,
22:38the highest judicial body will take action.
22:49Like this, we have come to the end of this news brief. You can find these and many other
22:53stories on our website at Telestro English. Connect or join us on social media Facebook,
22:57Instagram and TikTok. I'm Luis Alberto Matos and we now leave you with images of all the
23:07celebrations that are being held across Asia and the Pacific as people are welcoming the year 2025.
23:13Happy New Year. Have a good one.
23:23Let's open a new chapter of the high quality coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei
23:48region and build the region into a demonstration zone of Chinese modernization.
