00:00Hello there, good morning and a very happy new year to you. As we head through the first
00:05of January, rain eventually clears more southern counties. Before that though, we do have warnings
00:10in force. Rain warnings across Wales, Northern England, a wind warning with gusts along the
00:14coast which could reach 65 to 75 miles an hour as the rain slowly clears, and this snow
00:19and ice warning associated with a cold stream of air coming in from the north, the risk
00:23of some slippery surfaces, ice and a widespread frost as we head into Thursday morning. But
00:29eventually the skies do clear and many of us are seeing some sunshine through the first
00:33few days of 2025 but the air will be very cold. Now let's take a look at the detail
00:39as we head through the first of January. There's a lot of weather out there still and certainly
00:43across northern Scotland we've seen rain and snow overnight with a driving wind. This batch
00:51of wet weather with some wintry precipitation, particularly over the high ground but even
00:54at lower levels, sinking southwards. At the same time it's a wet and windy start to the
00:58day for Yorkshire, Lancashire, Lincolnshire, Wales, the Midlands, down towards the West
01:05Country through the first part of the morning. Notice this rain becomes quite squally and
01:09heavy for a time. Now the winds are going to be the key feature with weather towards
01:13the north as well as the south, driving in some showers for Northern Ireland as this
01:17rain with a little snow over the southern uplands just pushes down towards the central
01:21belt. So if you are stepping out mid to late morning this is what you're going to see.
01:26Cold stream of air, some snow showers, this batch of rain with some snow associated with
01:31it, showers moving in across Northern Ireland. Some brighter skies perhaps for Northumberland
01:35as well as Cumbria but further south it's still wet. So mid Wales towards Lincolnshire,
01:42down towards the south east, you're seeing the rain there and that rain does extend down
01:46towards the West Country and it will turn squally as I said as we head through into
01:50the afternoon. Notice there's a clearance coming in across the Midlands through the
01:54afternoon and certainly perhaps even a little bit of brighter weather before this front
01:58here will bring again that mix of rain and snow over the higher ground with a strong
02:03wind. It's a wet and windy end to the first of January across central southern parts of
02:07England and Wales with some heavy rain and also those gusty winds as that cold northerly
02:13wind just sinks southwards into New Year's Day night. Here are your temperatures then.
02:19Well in marked contrast to New Year's Eve it's much colder across the south through
02:23the latter part of the day and certainly temperatures struggling to arrive around
02:27one or two degrees Celsius where you see that snow over the higher ground. Now through today
02:34into tonight you can see that rain clears which is good news and then some drier skies
02:38but notice the frost extends southwards across most parts of the country so a fairly widespread
02:43frost into the second of January, temperatures sub zero, snow showers particularly across
02:49windward facing coasts and it's going to feel cold with that wind. These showers could clip
02:53the east coast of England certainly down towards Wales as well as the west country and a few
02:58coming in across the north and north east of Northern Ireland and again there could
03:02be a little wintry mix associated with them as well. Through the day on Thursday some
03:06brighter skies inland which is good news, the wind is still a feature of the weather
03:10but certainly inland you will see some fine and crystal clear air as temperatures arrive
03:15around two or three degrees Celsius but still those showers continue, wintry showers at
03:19that along the coastline. Now through Thursday evening and overnight that frost returns with
03:25a vengeance so another very cold start to the day on Friday where you see snow showers
03:31the risk of ice but then through Friday some brighter skies yet again, temperatures struggling
03:35a little bit and a few wintry showers. Wherever you are take care, happy new year and I'll
03:39see you again soon.
