00:00The bivouac is a working area located between the finish time controls and the start of
00:08a stage.
00:10It serves as the place where competitors camp for the night and the primary support base
00:14for the race.
00:16It is a controlled and secured closed surface over a huge area for private use as part of
00:21the Dakar, access to which is exclusively and uniquely reserved for all persons accredited
00:27by the organizer.
00:28There are between 2,500 and 3,000 people in a bivouac, including competitors, mechanics,
00:34team staff, rally officials, medical staff and media representatives.
00:39In essence, the Dakar Rally Bivouac is like a small travelling city following the race,
00:44providing all the necessary logistical support for the smooth functioning of the race.
00:49This includes such things as water, catering, waste services, electricity, internet, satellites,
00:54TV production and all other necessary medical and technical facilities.
01:00Bivouacs are usually set up near an airport to facilitate mobility for the organization.
01:04It is common to say during the event that the Dakar doesn't wait, so there will be
01:09often two to three bivouacs built in different places at the same time in order to keep up
01:14with the demands of the race and enable the smooth transition between race locations.
01:20One special type of bivouac is also set up during the marathon stage of the race.
01:24A two-day stage where no outside service, such as team mechanics, is authorized.
01:29The only authorized service is between competitors still racing, and so the bivouac is set up
01:34to reflect these restrictions.
01:36Through it all, the bivouac is an integral and crucial part of the Dakar experience,
01:41without which the event could not take place.
