A very cold start to the day today across the country, with some milder temperatures only in the far southwest. Some cloud about in the Midlands and Wales, although clear for most, with some wintry showers in the north of Scotland. A wet day is expected for the south, with a chance of some wintry showers although certainty remains low for the location and amount. Overall, bitterly cold across the country with some icy surfaces about. A yellow snow and ice warning is in effect for Northern Ireland and north and west Scotland, and a yellow snow warning is in place for the south. - This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the morning of 08/01/2025. 00:00Hello there, good morning to you on this bitterly cold Wednesday morning.
00:05Temperatures plummeted overnight, the risk of ice this morning. A snow and ice
00:09warning extends from northern Scotland, western Scotland down towards Northern
00:12Ireland. This feature here, we've been keeping an eye on it. It's an area of
00:16cloud and rain, some stronger winds as it bumps into the cold air. There is a risk
00:21of some snow through today, particularly for southern counties. A mix of rain and
00:26snow along the coastline. The distribution is slightly, somewhat
00:29uncertain, but certainly there could be some winteriness about as we head
00:32through the day. Winds are light inland and in fact overnight we have seen some
00:37freezing fog patches along with that ice, the frost and also these wintry showers.
00:41A cold biting wind towards the north-northeast, the western side of
00:46Scotland delivering those showers towards Northern Ireland. You can see
00:49there are some freezing fog patches around, some clearer skies across the
00:52central, about northern and eastern England, but towards the west as well as
00:56central parts of England and Wales, more in the way of clouds. And notice rain
00:59approaching the west country, so Cornwall, southern parts of Devon. And even
01:04through the first part of the morning on its northern edge, you can see there is a
01:07mix of rain and snow here, particularly over the moors, but even at lower levels
01:12the air is that cold. And it's going to skirt the south coast this feature, but
01:17as it moves northward just slightly, it will turn to snow. So the risk of snow
01:21through the day across southern counties. More clouds across the
01:25Midlands as well as southern parts of Wales. Further north you can see these
01:29showers running in. Wintry showers, further accumulations across the
01:33northwest Highlands and then further south a mix of rain and snow in terms of
01:38showers across Northern Ireland, particularly the far north there. Many
01:41areas having a dry day away from the far south and then the periphery of
01:45Scotland down towards Northern Ireland and there will be some sunshine around.
01:48But watch out for this feature towards the south, could cause some problems on
01:51the roads through rush hour this evening. Temperatures struggling where
01:55you see lying snow struggling to get above freezing. It's going to be a
01:59bitterly cold day with icy surfaces. So that frost returns with a vengeance
02:04further south as we head through the evening. This rain and snow retreats,
02:08which is good news, through evening and overnight and we see starry skies. Now
02:13yet again those wintry showers will continue to affect windward facing coasts.
02:18But look at this, temperatures are going to be lower than the last few nights.
02:21So a widespread and severe frost into Thursday morning across the snowfields
02:26of the north where the winds are light and you see clearer skies. We could see
02:30temperatures down as low as minus 12 to minus 14 degrees Celsius. So it's bitter
02:35outside as we approach Thursday morning and yet still across the far southeast
02:40through the early hours that mix of rain and snow continues with the risk of ice
02:44as well as it retreats. So a cold start to the day, a very cold start on
02:48Thursday. Clearer skies, some freezing fog patches where the winds have been
02:52light and yet again we'll see those showers continuing along coastlines and
02:57pushing in across Wales, Irish Sea coast there. Now on Friday, after a
03:02widespread and severe frost, we'll see brighter skies across the north and
03:06northeast. Temperatures struggling towards the west. The cloud will thicken.
03:10There is a chance any rain which is associated with that cloud could turn to
03:14snow yet again. We'll keep you posted on all our social media channels for
03:18today though. Stay warm, stay safe and I'll see you again soon.
