00:00Cuba has officially joined South Africa's lawsuit against Israel for genocide in Palestine,
00:17as announced by the International Court of Justice in The Hague on January 13th, 2025.
00:26Mexican government has ratified that the country is ready to receive migrants deported from
00:29the United States under the best conditions.
00:35And in the United States, dry wind gusts from Santana complicate firefighters' work and
00:40jeopardize the rescue of the bodies of the dead victims of two huge fires affecting Los
00:44Angeles.
00:47Hello, welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos, from Television Studios in
00:55Havana, Cuba.
00:56We begin with the news.
01:16And Cuba officially joined South Africa's lawsuit against Israel for genocide in Palestine,
01:21the International Court of Justice announced on January 13th, 2025.
01:25Invoking Article 63 of the ICJ statute, Cuba condemned Israel's long-standing actions
01:30against the Palestinian people, calling attention to the urgent need for accountability and
01:35justice in the face of systematic oppression.
01:38This intervention underscores Cuba's commitment to supporting Palestinian rights and highlights
01:42the role of the ICJ as a critical platform for addressing violations of international
01:47law.
01:48The Cuban government emphasized that immediate international action is necessary to confront
01:53Israel's policies and protect human rights amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
02:03The United States has announced that a ceasefire agreement could be reached in Gaza as early
02:07as this week, although the Israeli army continues its deadly assault on the Palestinian enclave.
02:13Among the outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden said a ceasefire could be reached after more
02:16than a year of carnage in Palestine.
02:19Also White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said during a press conference
02:23earlier in the day that a deal may be possible in a matter of days, although such an agreement
02:27is not guaranteed.
02:28Meanwhile, the resistance movement Hamas has also stated that talks have made some progress
02:34on some of the contentious issues that have been discussed on numerous occasions throughout
02:3815 months of genocide that has claimed the lives of more than 46,000 Palestinians in
02:43Gaza.
02:44On the war between Israel and Hamas, we're in the brink of a proposal that I laid out
02:55in detail months ago finally coming to fruition.
03:02I have learned many years of public service to never, never, never, ever.
03:11The South Africa operation is underway to rescue a group of miners trapped in a coal
03:16mine.
03:17The Group Mining Affected Communities United in Action says at least 400 men are still
03:22trapped and many have died.
03:24Zabailo Nguni, spokesman for the group mining, said a cell phone sent to the surface with
03:29some miners rescued on Friday had two videos showing dozens of bodies on the ground wrapped
03:33in plastic.
03:34Nguni also said a minimum of 100 men had died, suspected of starvation or dehydration.
03:40A professional mine rescue company has so far sent a large cage into the mine shaft
03:44near Stilfontine, about 140 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg, and it has been confirmed
03:49by Sucwisi Jam, the South African national civic organization, that same people have
03:54been rescued.

04:09We'll be right back, stay with us.
04:31Mexico's Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan RamĂłn Lafuente, has ratified that the country
04:36is ready to receive migrants deported from the United States under the best conditions.
04:40This is what he said during the consultative forum for the elaboration of a national development
04:44plan 2025-2030 held in the northwestern state of Sonora this Monday.
04:50President-elect Donald Trump's anti-immigrant law has started its countdown, and in fact
04:54Congress is about to approve the law that allows deportations, with the support of Democrats
04:58included.
04:59The Secretary explained that Mexico's consular network in the United States is ready to provide
05:04comprehensive assistance to its nationals.
05:13As migration in these times plays a fundamental role for individual and collective development,
05:22that is why we reiterate it again and you, in different ways in your work tables, reflect
05:27it with your conclusions. Those who want to return to our country or who are forced to
05:30return will be welcomed with open arms.
05:34And with all the opportunities they deserve to re-insert themselves in the productive
05:43work life, to have health services, education, social protection and security.
05:47That is the commitment of the government of President Scheinbaum, and is the priority
05:51of Mexican foreign policy.
05:54President Claudia Scheinbaum gave a report in her first 100 days in office where she
06:00highlighted the Mexican humanism model under the premise of for the good of all, first
06:05the poor, works to generate well-being. Antonio Aranda, our correspondent, has the details.
06:13In her first 100 days in administration, Claudia Scheinbaum has shown that she will follow
06:18the policies of the so-called fourth transformation. However, she will have to profile her own
06:22style of government, considers this analyst.
06:28The legislature of the Congress of the Union that started with his mandate, or almost with
06:33his mandate, had a great avalanche of constitutional reforms approved but most of them were basically
06:37the agenda of President LĂłpez Obrador. Many of these changes are initiated by him. There
06:47are some issues such as substantive equality, such as the reform that gives social security
06:52to digital platform workers that are hers. But we are at a very early stage to say that
06:56there is a differentiation from her.
07:03Among the challenges that generate more expectations in the short term is the bilateral relationship
07:08with the United States.
07:09A person who wants to deal with Donald Trump has to be very astute, has to be very crafty,
07:17has to be very left-handed, has to know how to appear to be strong while feigning weakness
07:21and vice versa. Obviously, what we are seeing here is a defense of the conationals residing
07:29in the United States because of their own extra-official condition, not naturally accredited,
07:34but apart from that they are wrapping themselves in the flag. We are going to work, we are
07:38going to collaborate, but we are not going to submit ourselves.
07:47In 2025, security and judiciary reform will be high on Scheinbaum's political agenda.
07:56We are going to see how this year develops and how President Scheinbaum performs, and
08:00obviously her success is something that concerns us all. United States, security and judicial
08:06reform are going to be the three strong issues and how much capacity Claudia Scheinbaum is
08:10going to have to maintain leadership within the great coalition that is Morena.
08:19The increase in the minimum wage is one of the most appropriate policies to improve the
08:23welfare of the working class, according to this specialist.
08:29Something that we have found to be going in the right direction is the increase to the
08:32minimum wage. What we have seen is that between 2018 and 2024 this minimum wage has recovered
08:39111% of its purchasing power in real terms. The President's promise is that the minimum
08:44wage will be equivalent to 2.5 basic food baskets.
08:52The promotion of higher education is another strategy that will improve the population's
08:56standard of living in the medium term.
09:02Education is related to greater opportunities and higher average income growth. It is a
09:06strategy that is sorely needed. In the end we want economic growth and for that we need
09:10a robust training of different professions, especially through higher education and vocational
09:15training programs.
09:21In the end, this must be a great success in order to grow. We need an increase in the
09:25human capital of the population. This is more than necessary.
09:33The increase in social programs and more support for women are public policies that
09:38will help strengthen their development, the specialist explains.
09:44I would like to highlight the return of the full-time schools. These were eliminated during
09:48the last administration and it is a good thing for the President to reinstate these programs.
09:57In the Mexican labor market we have a great failure and it is the low labor participation
10:02of women. And when we analyze the causes, we find the use of the time that women dedicate
10:06to the care of children, the elderly and the sick, which at the end of the day is unpaid
10:10work.
10:15Scheinbaum has denounced that the right-wing opposition wants the contraction of democracy,
10:20but she is committed to maintaining the separation of powers as effective counterweights for institutional
10:25stability. One of the commitments of President Scheinbaum as a guiding principle of her policy
10:31is to prevent the return of the neoliberal system that socializes losses and privatizes
10:36profits.
10:42In Venezuela, the Vice President for International Affairs of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela,
10:46Ramder Peña, questioned on Monday who is in charge of Colombia's foreign policy, President
10:50Gustavo Petro and Foreign Minister Gilberto Murillo. Through an article, representatives
10:56of the party warned that the Colombian foreign minister obeys former President Juan Manuel
11:01Santos and the government of the United States. Ramder Peña explained that according to the
11:05Colombian constitution, the president must direct the foreign policy of the country.
11:09However, it seems that this attribution has been outsourced to the U.S., with former President
11:14Santos as intermediary and Foreign Minister Murillo as the executor. According to Peña,
11:19the U.S. has ordered the Colombian foreign minister to boycott everything that has to
11:22do with Venezuela.
11:28The Iranian President Massoud Pashinyan congratulated the president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro,
11:32on the start of his third term, reaffirming his country's support for the Venezuelan
11:36people and government. Through his social media, the Iranian president reaffirmed his
11:41country's willingness to strengthen bilateral relations between the two peoples. Likewise,
11:45he condemned the aggressions against the Venezuelan government and people, stressing that any
11:49foreign intervention and attempt to threaten and sanction the country is doomed to failure.
11:54President Maduro was sworn in for a third consecutive term after being elected by the
11:59Venezuelan people in the elections held on July 28. The Venezuelan president's inauguration
12:03has been marked by a media war and failed attempts to destabilize the country led by
12:08the country's far-right and backed by the United States.
12:16The International Congress of Communications in Caracas came to an end after two days of
12:20work. Congress has taken a number of important decisions. Details from a special envoy, Dino
12:26Soner.
12:27Caracas, Venezuela, continues to be a global center of the fight against fascism and imperialism.
12:34After three days of the World Festival of the Anti-Fascist International, on Monday
12:38finished the International Congress of Communication with an anti-fascist, anti-colonial, anti-patriarchal
12:44and anti-imperialist agenda. Its objective is to be part of constructing a new world.
12:50Our communication intended to recreate the narratives for changing the world, changing
12:58the subjectivities, the identities, changing the living people with creating the new states,
13:10the new utopias, the new forms to be people, to be humanity.
13:18More than 400 delegates from 100 countries came together for two days. Their battlefield,
13:23communication, networks and the so-called social media owned by Western corporations.
13:28In eight workshops they discussed ideas and proposals with concrete outcomes.
13:33We decided to make an executive secretary to work permanently, not just in Venezuela,
13:40also in each other country that is getting over here.
13:46A number of decisions were taken. Delegates agreed to establish the Hugo Chavez International
13:50People's Communication Award. The first grantee are the more than 100 Palestinian journalists
13:56who lost their lives in Israel's attacks.
14:02Imperialism's walls cannot be an obstacle against the communication and development
14:06of the peoples that love independence, peace and justice. This Congress is a beacon and
14:12a window for us.
14:17Creating the network of the networks established was a permanent secretariat within the International
14:22University of Communication, an international team of researchers and the plan of action
14:27for the creation of media content. Media institutions will consolidate their relations within what
14:33delegates called the network of the networks globally.
14:36As you know, Islamic resistance comes from other nature, Latin American socialism, the
14:44other one. But when these people that try, actually are trying hard to fight against
14:54imperialism come under or unite themselves under a unique flag of...
15:00Several speakers spoke about coordinating the effort with China and Russia. Delegates
15:05from the latter have already ideas.
15:07Russia has its own experience to struggle with fake news. On political level, on society
15:15level, we can propose a project of laws for any countries how to work with fake news.
15:24In her closing remarks, Director of the International University of Communications, Tania Dias,
15:29said the Congress was a step further to complete Simon Bolivar's dream. In communications,
15:34the Liberators' vision is now beginning to embrace the entire world.

16:31Welcome back. In the United States, right-wing gusts from Santana, difficult firefighters
16:35work and jeopardize the rescue of the bodies of the dead victims of two huge fires affecting
16:39Los Angeles. The Palisades and Eden fires, that have already consumed more than 40,000
16:44acres, the equivalent of an area larger than the city of San Francisco, have intensified.
16:49Wind gusts of 72 to 112 kilometers per hour are forecast to proceed through Wednesday.
16:54Rescue officials acknowledge that this is a worst-case scenario, especially since there
16:58are more than 20 bodies to be rescued, and at least 23 people are confirmed missing.
17:03The Palisades fire is currently only 14% contained, and the Eden fire 33% contained.
17:13And in France, migrants have been occupying a theater in Paris for about a month, demanding
17:18the government provide them with housing. According to local media, last December, the
17:22Guide Lyric Theater in Paris hosted a free conference entitled Reinventing the Reception
17:26of Refugees in France, which attracted more than 250 African immigrants, led by Parisian
17:32activists. Currently, around 300 people have occupied the theater's facilities to intensify
17:36their demands for housing from the country's government. It is important to emphasize that
17:41the immigrants occupying the theater arrived in the country claiming to be under 18, which
17:45would entitle them to housing and assistance from the local authorities, but they were
17:49considered adults and most ended up sleeping on the streets.
17:57In Romania, thousands of people took to the streets of Bucharest through protests against
18:02the decision to cancel the elections, pressing their support for candidate Gheorghe Scu.
18:06The protests came a month after the Constitutional Court announced the decision to annul the
18:11presidential elections after the pro-Russian candidate Kalin Gheorghe Scu won the first
18:15round of the elections. Demonstrators demanded the resignation of the Romanian president
18:20and the resumption of the second round of the elections. The cancellation of the presidential
18:24contest was announced under accusations of electoral violations and Russian interference,
18:29a decision that plunged the country into political chaos.
18:32In Praia Garage, India, the Maha Kunz Mela 2025 has officially begun, with organizers
18:54expecting around 400 million attendees over the six-week festival. Kicking off on January
18:5913, the event features the auspicious Pushpurnimathnan, where millions gather to bathe at the sacred
19:05confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati rivers. At the largest religious
19:10gathering in the world, the Kunz Mela showcases India's rich cultural heritage alongside
19:15its spiritual practices. This year's festival is particularly significant due to a rare
19:20celestial alignment enhancing its spiritual importance.
19:25And then in celebrated Voodoo Day, a festivity focused on the arts, culture and spirituality
19:33around this cult. Let's learn more in the following material.
19:39In the southern city of Ouida, in this African country, dozens of participants gathered for
19:46a three-day celebration of this traditional event, which featured a mix of vibrant songs,
19:51dances and the display of characteristic attire.
20:03In practice, women play a central role during the organization of the rites and meetings,
20:07being the main responsible for teaching and sharing this knowledge to young and old people.
20:13Imagine a voodoo ceremony without all those people telling sermons. As you can see, most
20:19of them are women, because they are the ones who will carry the energy. Don't forget that
20:23everything is a matter of vibrations, energy and frequency, so women, through their voices
20:28and through their hearts give the energy and frequencies necessary for the manifestation
20:32of the divine energy.
20:35Women are considered guardians of the spiritual and cultural transmission of this tradition,
20:40linked to the powers of nature and ancestors.
20:47Some festival celebrations are even specifically dedicated to female divinities such as Mamiwata
20:53and Sikpata, underlining the importance of the role of women in the organization of the
20:58Anyone can join the Vodun cult. As soon as a person presents himself, he is put in contact
21:03with the priests, who explain the conditions to be met in order to be able to access the
21:07practice or simply the initiation.
21:13Every year, thousands of tourists from all over the world come to the Vodun cult to learn
21:18about the tradition.

21:26Every year, thousands of tourists from all over the world flock to the city of Ouida,
21:30considered the cradle of Vodou, to watch dozens of the faithful perform these practices and
