00:06The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center or CICC

00:11is now discussing the amendment or passing of a new law to address this.

00:16This is what Rod Laguzan reported.

00:28Because there are more than 6 million text scams

00:30and more than 600,000 scam calls.

00:33This is how much was leaked by the trust technology firm

00:35Gogolook in 2024 in the country.

00:38This is based on the data leaked by their mobile application,

00:41Who's Call, which is an anti-scam app.

00:44to the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center or CICC of the DICT.

00:49From this number,

00:50it is noteworthy that this number has been increasing

00:54since the first quarter of 2024.

00:56From the 1.1 million text scams

00:58that were recorded in the first quarter of 2024,

01:00it increased to more than 2 million text scams

01:03in the last quarter of the year.

01:05This is also the trend in scam calls.

01:07Because from more than 100,000 in the first quarter,

01:10more than 200,000 were recorded in the fourth quarter of 2024.

01:13The bare months or from September to December

01:16are the highest number of text scams

01:18and scam calls in the past year.

01:20More of a cultural thing.

01:23Because we all know that during the last quarter of the year,

01:28that's where we would have a higher tendency to spend.

01:40that we earn our commission, rewards, bonuses.

01:44Who's Call also reported

01:46that more than 16,000 risky URLs were sent last year.

01:49Most of these are invitation links

01:52to register for online services,

01:54promotions, insurance, game memberships,

01:56financial services, loans, and rewards.

01:59The increase is more than 100%.

02:03If we compare the quarter 4 of 2023

02:08with the quarter 4 of 2024,

02:12the increase is more than 100%

02:14for both scam calls and SMS scams.

02:19According to CICC Executive Director

02:21Undersecretary Alexander Ramos,

02:23they were the first to announce

02:24not to click the link to text messages,

02:27especially since there's a police here.

02:28You see there are third party or a scammer

02:31trying to take control of your account

02:35or take away your money.

02:37So that's what we're saying over and over again

02:40because we knew that our practices, behaviors,

02:46we're quick in this.

02:48So we changed the norm

02:51by removing that as a vulnerability

02:55among Filipino users.

02:57Ramos added that because of the SIM card registration,

03:00they already know who can be chased.

03:02He added that because of this,

03:03the vulnerability of the process was reduced.

03:05According to Ramos,

03:06the new scams are coming from social media platforms

03:09that are not included in the SIM registration act.
