00:00You're a Kryptonian, not classic enough? Todd's got you covered.
00:05Here's a look at the brand new McFarland Toys DC Super Powers Classic Superman.
00:22Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive,
00:25the Man of Steel fights a never-ending battle for truth, justice, and the American way.
00:30It's sure nice to see Kal-El with more classic of a costume.
00:33How about before we look at that costume though, let's grab the tape measure and see how tall the new Classic Superman is from the DC Super Powers line.
00:39Superman though is going to stand at about four and a half inches in height.
00:43Maybe even four and three quarters of an inch. We'll maybe stick with that.
00:46Translating though to a figure that's about eleven and a half centimeters tall.
00:50I'm sure I'm not the only one that's noticed the McFarland Toys has really finessed the Super Powers line.
00:54In fact, when you look at the Classic Superman and you compare him with the original Superman,
00:58not that the original Superman was bad at all,
01:01but if you are one like myself that really grew up loving the Kenner Super Powers line,
01:05the one that we're getting now is a little bit more closer to that.
01:08Speaking though of which, let's also bring in the Caped Crusader that also looks a little bit more with a classic costume.
01:13And even though really she was a repaint, I don't know if we're ever going to be getting an updated version of Wonder Woman.
01:18Here's at least though the colors that look a little bit more closer to the Kenner days.
01:22Because Superman doesn't have accessories, I'm going to spend a little bit of time
01:26talking about the packaging and the condition in which Amazon shipped this.
01:29That's actually where I ordered this figure.
01:31When I did get this in the mail, first of all, at least they shipped it in a box the size of this.
01:35Nothing was crampled. Nothing was folded inside.
01:38Unfortunately though, what was inside when I opened up the box was the clamshell piece of this was in fact upside down.
01:45So if you were to look at Superman, for example, instead of him looking like this the way he should,
01:49I actually had him arrive where he was upside down.
01:52Obviously his cape wasn't dangling like that, but he was upside down like this.
01:55So it looked like maybe that the clamshell, I don't know if maybe the adhesive had come loose and that this just came loose completely.
02:01So what they did was instead of worrying about the collector, oh, I don't know, maybe wanting this to keep this mint on card,
02:07they actually just flipped this around, not even paying attention to where the placement of the figure should have been.
02:12And then they took this ugly, oh no, this ugly packing tape and they ran it across the top of it.
02:18In fact, you probably can even see some of what's left behind of the packing tape.
02:22I cut it on the side and basically what I just did in order to get everything prepped for this review,
02:27I ended up just kind of gluing the side so that when I was looking at it at the beginning,
02:30I could at least make this look somewhat suggestive like it was still sealed on card when clearly it wasn't the case.
02:36I don't know, again, like what Amazon, what are you guys doing?
02:38Sometimes though I've gotten things from Amazon and they came in pretty good condition.
02:42Other times, like the Kenner Super Power Superman, it was just a disaster.
02:46By the way, though, while we are kind of looking at the packaging right now, I want to show you guys.
02:49It's not that much different from the original Super Power Superman.
02:52You can see Superman flying off to the side there.
02:54Of course, on the back, there's quite a lot of characters.
02:57I've covered, I feel like maybe three quarters of the way through there.
03:00There's some standout ones that I still want to get my hands on.
03:02Like, for example, that classic Brainiac and even Metamorpho.
03:06Maybe we might be getting that in a future review.
03:08There's also as well, not that something you could cut out necessarily as a file card, but a little bit of a read up.
03:13I read this at the beginning of this review and there's a couple of vehicles down below.
03:15Okay, so that's Amazon's screw up aside.
03:18Yeah, Superman, unfortunately, doesn't come included with any accessories whatsoever.
03:21I guess the only thing that he really does come included with is a cape.
03:25The cape, though, one thing I will say, speaking of vast improvements, if we look at the original cape that Superman had,
03:31the material that they used, and I don't know if hopefully the camera is able to convey this,
03:35it was just kind of a plastic felt material.
03:38It was really a weird material that bunched up, unfortunately, especially around the collar area.
03:43The new cape that they're using all seems now to be a more softer fabric.
03:46So right away, the improvements are notable.
03:48Also, too, you can see like while this one did still have the Superman symbol on the back of his cape,
03:53this one now has a little bit more of a smaller Superman emblem, and I think it works a little bit better.
03:57So like right away, the capes are considerably a vast improvement.
04:00But then when you look at the figures themselves, I know some still like the original superpowers.
04:04And I'm still of that variety.
04:06I'm still of that group that still like the original look of the superpower Superman.
04:10It's not a bad Superman.
04:12But one thing I will say, though, is I honestly did miss the classic looking Superman.
04:17So I'm kind of glad to see that they are kind of doing this again,
04:20where they're getting us characters that look a little bit more like the way they did from the 80s.
04:24I know, old guy behind the camera stuck in the past.
04:26You got a man move forward with things.
04:28But for me, at least, if you're going to be doing superpowers,
04:31there's nothing really wrong, I feel, with having characters that look like the original Kenner ones.
04:35One thing that's kind of interesting, though, about Superman is, first of all,
04:38he has completely different new head sculpt.
04:40I don't mind the head.
04:42The one thing I will say, though, is I think the coloring of his face is a little bit too dark and muddy.
04:46As this to be a comparison, if you want to look at the original Superman, for example,
04:50they went with more of a lighter color.
04:52And while it's a little bit more modern Superman,
04:54I think the coloring of his skin would have worked a lot better with this face.
04:58But I feel like they went with a little bit more of a brown.
05:00And I feel like it's too brown.
05:03It looks like Superman's gotten himself a tan.
05:05The face also does have teeth visible.
05:08And initially, I really didn't like the look of that.
05:11I think the more that I've had this,
05:13and the more I've kind of had time to look at the figure and kind of play around,
05:15move his articulation, stuff like that,
05:17I think the smile doesn't bother me as much.
05:19I think it's just the coloring of his skin tone that's throwing things off for me.
05:23Of course, the cape itself can be removable if you want to.
05:26And also, they seem to still be using that C-clip piece,
05:30which I think before was metal.
05:32It looks like they're probably using this as plastic now.
05:34But it still works the exact same way.
05:36The way they've also sewn this, too,
05:38it doesn't have as much of the bunch-up.
05:40If we can get this cape out of the way here.
05:42When you put it on Superman's neck, for example,
05:44and then we compare it with the first Superman,
05:47especially with the use of this type of material,
05:49it made for a much crinkly-looking cape.
05:52The new Superman using this material, again, I think works a lot better.
05:55I initially did think, also, that they were going to be using the body again.
05:59But if you look at the difference between the two,
06:01and just overlook the coloring right away,
06:04the abdomens, the abdominal muscles, for example,
06:06are a lot larger on the first Superman release,
06:09and smaller on the newer one.
06:11So while maybe looking at this initially thinking that the torso was the same,
06:14the torso also on this one is a lot bigger.
06:17The arms is also something that's been changed.
06:19So it's really interesting the fact that you would think
06:22that they would have gone and tried to save as many costs as they could,
06:25but that this new Superman, for example, has bigger biceps,
06:28he has a different position for his arm,
06:30and even though it's still bent,
06:32it clearly is a different mold on this one than on the first one.
06:35Legs are also something that's different, too.
06:37This guy has not skipped leg day.
06:39Not that the initial one skipped leg day at all,
06:41but the colors are, again, a lot lighter of a blue,
06:43a little bit more darker blue on both the blue and on the red.
06:46So again, while it does have, again, the changes that they've made here,
06:50the emblem, I think, is a little bit nicer here, too.
06:52It's a little bit wider, which worked really well.
06:54Short of just, again, not having any of the gimmick feature,
06:58because the original Superman from Kenner,
07:00if you squeezed the legs, basically his fist would fly forward.
07:03I understand that from a costing of producing that,
07:06they'd have to throw the gimmick in with different figures.
07:08Not all the same figure had the same gimmick.
07:10So, of course, to add those additional gimmicks
07:12would have increased the cost of this figure line.
07:14In the end, they just kind of want to make them inspired
07:17by the original superpowers.
07:19So things like gimmicks, unfortunately, get left off the table.
07:21Now, for the figure's articulation, going back to Superman's head here,
07:24the head does rotate back and forth.
07:26It's standard articulation, so don't expect too much here.
07:29The arms are only going to rotate all the way around.
07:31Same with the original superpowers figures, too.
07:33And the legs move forward and back.
07:35That's all you're going to be getting,
07:36with only just a single hinge also getting afforded to the knees.
07:39So standard levels of poseability, but, again,
07:41if you grew up collecting the Kenner superpowers,
07:43that kind of goes with the territory.
07:45Also, too, the figures don't have peg holes in the bottoms of his feet,
07:48even though the figures don't come included with display stands.
07:50That would be one thing I really would like to see.
07:52Speaking of things I also really would like to see,
07:54let's just bring back in Batman.
07:56Still one of my favorite superpowers is still the Batman.
07:59Let's also bring in Wonder Woman.
08:01And even though I didn't bring him in earlier for the comparisons,
08:03I also want to bring in the Hal Jordan Green Lantern.
08:06A little bit darker on the green,
08:07he probably could have gone a little bit lighter,
08:09but still, like, if you're looking for, like,
08:10classic-looking superpowers figures,
08:13good little lineup we got going on right here.
08:15I know that they can't incorporate a gimmick.
08:17Throwing in accessories or seem to be hit or miss,
08:20some of the accessories aren't really included,
08:21for the most part, with these figures.
08:22And, yeah, they don't come included with display stands.
08:24Something, though, I would love to see,
08:26and it's still not something that they've ever entertained,
08:29I don't think, is to include mini-comics.
08:31If you ever remember collecting the superpowers from the 80s,
08:33all those figures had not only accessories,
08:35but they also had mini-comics.
08:37Mini-comics, I think, would have been well welcomed.
08:39They sort of have already done that already,
08:41and that's something I've also mentioned
08:42when we did the reviews of other superpowers figures.
08:44They've done it, really, with also, like,
08:46those little small figures.
08:48What were they called?
08:49And they, of course, came included with the comic.
08:51Those were all figures back then.
08:52Tom was doing this pretty early into the run
08:54of what he was doing when he first acquired the DC run.
08:57Page punchers. Page punchers.
08:59That's exactly what it was.
09:00The page punchers came included with a full-size comic.
09:04I think, really, it's not that hard to think
09:06that they probably could just shrink something down like that
09:08and just include a little mini-comic.
09:10If you're not going to include a gimmick,
09:11at the very least, a mini-comic would go a long way
09:14to make the line even more nostalgic than what it is now.
09:17Oh, boy.
09:18Can we, again, just talk a little bit
09:20about the state of that packaging?
09:22You know, it's a sting on that.
09:24I mean, obviously, I'm not a mint-on-card collector.
09:26The fact that we are looking this figure loose in this review.
09:28But had I been, I would have, first of all,
09:30been really disappointed.
09:32The fact that they run clear tape
09:34just to keep the bubble on top of the card.
09:36But then, the worst on top of that
09:38is that Superman arrived upside down.
09:40You know, if you're at least going to try to hide things,
09:43I mean, they didn't even hide it, either.
09:45If you're going to try to patch up the condition of the box,
09:47the first thing I at least would ask that you do
09:50is make sure that the figure is right-side up.
09:53Either way, though, still, for me,
09:55I was going to open him up anyways.
09:57But the condition, though, of that,
09:59it has to be noted in this review.
10:01For Superman, though, alone,
10:03one thing, though, I'm really impressed
10:05that Todd and his team did
10:07was that they made this figure from scratch.
10:09I just assumed that he was probably
10:11going to be using the same body
10:13as the first release Superman,
10:15different shape, different head sculpt.
10:17And while looking at the head sculpt initially,
10:19I would have rathered they had given him
10:21a neutral expression with a closed mouth instead.
10:23The mouth grows on me.
10:25The coloring, though, for his skin doesn't.
10:27I think, again, it's way too dark.
10:29And had they maybe just taken the same tones of skin
10:31as they did with the first initial release of Superman,
10:33this figure would have looked a lot better
10:35than what he does.
10:37Yes, he's missing a gimmick.
10:39Don't go into this line expecting that any of the superpowers
10:41are going to have flailing arms or moving legs
10:43like the original ones from the 80s would have done.
10:45But if you go into this just with these
10:47being inspired by the ones that we got from Kenner,
10:49they're doing marvels
10:51when it comes to the Kenner stuff.
10:53And it's funny that I'm saying marvels
10:55and I'm talking about DC.
10:57But as we get more subsequent releases,
10:59you can kind of really see the progression
11:01and a positive progression of what we got
11:03from the first superpowers figures from McFarlane Toys
11:05to what we're getting now.
11:07If you want the classic look of the characters
11:09back in the 80s, I think what we're getting now
11:11might maybe entice you,
11:13or maybe you were on the fence before.
11:15What do you guys think of this Superman?
11:17Let me know down below in the comments section.
11:19And really, between this one and the first release of Superman,
11:21which one do you think is the better looking figure?
11:23Also, again, if you guys did enjoy this video,
11:25you can do it a solo, of course,
11:27and always hit it with a like.
11:29But if you guys want to stick around for more,
11:31I hope so.
11:33We are going to be kind of wrapping up things right now,
11:35at least in the territory of superpowers.
11:37But there will be, though, more DC Multiverse reviews
11:39coming out next week.
11:41So I hope you guys are coming back for those.
11:43As always, thanks for watching.
11:45See you guys next time.
