The Patriots are hiring Josh McDaniels as their offensive coordinator for his third stint in the role. Kirk Minihane was first to report on it. McDaniels interviewed Monday and was always the top choice. He’ll join Mike Vrabel’s staff and work with rookie QB Drake Maye.

On defense, the Patriots are interviewing Lions DL coach Terrell Williams for the defensive coordinator spot. Albert Breer reports it’s likely Williams will join Vrabel’s staff.

00:00I am joined by Robert Griffin, the third James White field.
00:08Yes, Mina Kimes.
00:09All right.
00:10So first play, we're going to look at second into one of the Patriots first offensive plays.
00:17They did it.
00:18What's going on, everyone?
00:19Mike Catholic here.
00:20Taylor Kyle's there for CLNS media with an emergency edition of the Patriots daily podcast
00:27where we are here to react to the news that they have officially hired Josh McDaniels
00:32as their next offensive coordinator.
00:34News breaking, news trickling in over, I would say, the last couple of hours.
00:39There were a couple of tweets out there.
00:41One from a random account that I, like, cheddar something that had it.
00:45Kirk Minahan, former WEI, now Barstool Sports, also had it this afternoon.
00:49Ben Pelfert.
00:50Ben Pelfert.
00:51Ben Pelfert Peltzman.
00:53My guy.
00:54You need one of those Hollywood names.
00:55It's a beautiful name.
00:56It's a beautiful name.
00:57At the Patriots beat on Twitter as well.
00:58So there was a ton of news rumors all kind of coming in around the four o'clock hour.
00:59Mark Daniels from MassLive then reported that Josh did, in fact, have an interview, had
01:00not yet been hired.
01:01And then the big wigs come in.
01:02Ian Rappaport.
01:03Just, I would say, just about an hour ago, maybe a little over an hour ago, that the
01:04Patriots are, in fact, hiring Josh McDaniels as their next offensive coordinator.

04:17Josh McDaniels.
04:18Josh McDaniels.
04:19Josh McDaniels.
04:20Josh McDaniels.
04:21Josh McDaniels.
04:22Josh McDaniels.
04:23Josh McDaniels.
04:24Josh McDaniels.
04:25Josh McDaniels.
04:26Josh McDaniels.
04:27Josh McDaniels.
04:28Josh McDaniels.
04:29Josh McDaniels.
04:30Josh McDaniels.
04:31Josh McDaniels.
04:32Josh McDaniels.
04:33Josh McDaniels.
04:34Josh McDaniels.
04:35Josh McDaniels.
04:36Josh McDaniels.
04:37Worst case scenario, you get Mac Jones on steroids.
04:41Exactly.
04:42Maybe he doesn't use as much window dressing as we like, right?
04:45Maybe he doesn't run Drake May as much as a Jaden Daniels or a Josh Allen or a Lamar or
04:50any of those kinds of athletic dual threat quarterbacks.
04:53Other than that, I have no worries.
04:55Yeah.
04:56This is a guy who partially helped develop Tom Brady.
04:59He was there for the early part of his career.
05:01He was not the only person, of course, but he was instrumental.
05:05And also, more than that, developed the latter part of Tom Brady's career, where those two
05:09were in complete sync, were texting each other at all hours of the day, trying to figure
05:13out the game plans they both like.
05:15Josh McDaniels understands what it takes to be a winning team, to be a championship team.
05:20And that's the kind of pedigree that the Patriots did not have anywhere outside of Gerard Mayo
05:26to a slight degree because he was technically on a Super Bowl winning team.
05:29And, of course, the players like Joe Cardona, Dietrich Wise, Jonathan Jones, two of whom
05:34are for agent this season.
05:36So now you get somebody who, one, is going to be able to show you what it means to win,
05:40what it takes to be those kinds of players, but also a guy who has a history of developing
05:45quarterbacks pretty well.
05:47The Pro Bowl was first year.
05:49Yes, they fell off towards the end.
05:51I felt at the time.
05:52I was one Josh left, though.
05:53Josh was 20, 21.
05:55I'm saying like, oh, but you could also argue that the talent wasn't very good that year.
06:00Right.
06:01We know what Mac Jones is now.
06:02In retrospect, we also know that roster was not great.
06:05Hunter Henry was a hit.
06:06Kendrick Bourne that year was a hit.
06:08Nelson Aguilera.
06:09I don't think they used him to the best of his ability, but Nelson Aguilera is not a
06:12reliable player.
06:13Johnny Smith is a great number three.
06:15Number four, the Patriots didn't have enough weapons for him to be the guy that terrified
06:19you.
06:20They were still a top eight pass or they were a top eight scoring offense.
06:24So it's not like this was still a bad team like with Drake.
06:27May they showed confidence with Cam Newton.
06:29They adjusted.
06:30They became a running team like very aggressively.
06:32They basically incorporated all of Cam Newton's runs from when he was with Carolina.
06:36And even in Las Vegas, they upped the outside zone rate.
06:40Everybody thinks of Josh is just a gap kind of coach or just going to run power one.
06:44His run game is one of the most diverse in the NFL.
06:47Let's just be very real with that.
06:49When I looked at the years like some of his last years in the NFL, every single gap concept,
06:54they were like top ten, top five.
06:56So, yes, they run gap.
06:57They run everything.
06:58But when he was in Vegas, they were a top 12 outside zone rushing attack with Josh Jacobs.
07:04They also incorporated some of the RPOs that worked with Jimmy Garoppolo when he was in
07:08San Francisco.
07:09So what I'm trying to say with all of this is I understand the hesitance with Josh McDaniels.
07:14I truly do.
07:15And I want to see what this looks like when we get to the spring, when we get to the summer
07:19and things are happening on the field.
07:20But this is a proven play caller, a proven a proven quarterback developer, a proven play
07:26caller.
07:27You did not have anybody who was an offensive candidate in this cycle that checked all of
07:32those boxes or at the very least anywhere near what Josh McDaniels gives you.
07:36So, again, I'm not trying to like poopoo all the fans that are like, I would like something
07:41fresh.
07:42I get that.
07:43But also understand that Josh McDaniels could very well go nuclear with the quarterback
07:46like Drake May as long as the offensive line gets better and as long as his offensive weapons
07:51are at least marginally better and more reliable.
07:54So I second all of those.
07:56No.
07:57Yeah.
07:58Good.
07:59Perfect.
08:00Perfect.
08:01And yeah, when you look away, the camera goes crazy.
08:02So I second all of those points.
08:03And I know that this shouldn't be the best part, but I truly think that this is.
08:07It's the staying power.
08:09It's the fact that he had two failed head coaching since and a third where he walked
08:14off the plane going to Indianapolis.
08:16So like outside of New England, he's essentially radioactive in the NFL.
08:21Nobody wants to entrust their franchise in him anymore because a the last two times he
08:26actually coached, it wasn't great.
08:27And the third time with Indy, he said, yeah, I'll come.
08:30Wait, Jay can't never mind.
08:31I'm going back.
08:32So like he hasn't had success as a head coach, but that's OK.
08:35And I tweeted their different jobs.
08:38They're completely different jobs.
08:40Well, I tweeted this a couple months ago.
08:42Ball knowers know the difference between Josh McDaniels, the head coach and Josh McDaniels,
08:46the offensive coordinator and the Patriots are getting Josh McDaniels, the offensive
08:50coordinator and Kendrick Bourne is fired up about it.
08:54He tweeted this.
08:55He's back.
08:56Kelly stole my tweet.
08:58I got a career high, 800 yards under Josh McDaniels.
09:02Let's let's pull it up.
09:04Kendrick Bourne, Bourne, 20, 21 stats with the Patriots.
09:09It was his best season as a pro.
09:13I want to say I think he tied his career high and touchdowns with five and had a career
09:18high with 800 yards.
09:19Career high, 800 yards, career high, fifty five receptions and tied a career high five
09:23touchdowns.
09:24So that was his best season as a pro was under Josh McDaniels.
09:27And then Josh left.
09:28Also rushing yards.
09:29Look at his rushing yards.
09:30They get like two hundred and fifty or something like that.
09:35Say that again.
09:36I think it's like, oh, one hundred twenty five rushing yards.
09:39One hundred twenty five.
09:40He carried the ball twelve times as well.
09:42Oh, OK.
09:43Yes.
09:44One hundred twenty five is still fine.
09:45I don't know where I got over 200.
09:46No, there was one there, though.
09:47And that's where my brain goes.
09:48I just get the single numbers and they fall wherever they go.
09:51OK.
09:52Be certainly excited now.
09:54The Patriots also interviewed interim Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown, Los Angeles
10:00Chargers pass game coordinator Marcus Brady and Vikings assistant OC and assistant offensive
10:05coordinator Grant Udinski for the position.
10:09So I'm curious, would you have rather any of those guys over Josh?
10:14Probably not.
10:16Well, I guess probably not all of them, because none of them had actually worked as a true
10:20OC, a true play caller before.
10:21Was there any interest in at least a guy like Grant Udinski who worked for Minnesota, worked
10:26with that great brain trust there under Kevin O'Connell?
10:29And I know we talked about it, I think, on yesterday's show where, OK, they interviewed
10:34Thomas Brown, they interviewed Marcus Brady.
10:36Maybe there's a chance they bring in Frank Reich, who was basically, you know, their
10:41boss in Carolina a couple of seasons ago.
10:44Like, was there any interest there?
10:46Anybody else, I guess, out there on the radar that you thought maybe could have been a better
10:51choice than Joshua Daniels?
10:53No, not better.
10:55I think there were some that were more intriguing for sure.
10:57I think that's fine.
10:58I think that I'm sorry, the Vikings assistant OC and quarterbacks coach.
11:02I'm sorry.
11:03It's Grant Udinski.
11:04Udinski.
11:05Yes, thank you.
11:06Name I'm not used to.
11:07I'm sorry.
11:08But Udinski, I think he was very interesting.
11:10A guy that Minnesota didn't want to let go.
11:12Obviously, they've done a good job with quarterbacks, with their offense.
11:15A guy who had worked with, we talked about it earlier today.
11:18He worked with quarterbacks.
11:19He had been an assistant offensive coordinator.
11:21So it seemed like the logical step was for him to be a quarterback developing type of
11:25OC.
11:26I will say it's not total non-starter that he becomes some member of the staff.
11:31And that's the important thing that I kind of also want to discuss is, yes, Joshua Daniels
11:35is the offensive coordinator.
11:37If you have someone running an offense, again, I just don't think you could have done better
11:41than Josh.
11:42He's done it so much.
11:43He's had so much success.
11:45You can't really point to a bad Josh McDaniels offensive coordinator season.
11:51Some that are worse than others.
11:52A hundred percent.
11:53No question.
11:54But when you look at the talent and the circumstances, you're not going to look at Josh and say, damn,
11:59like even with Rabel, you can go and say, damn, this season was a bit of a dud.
12:03It is a bit of a dud.
12:04I understand that.
12:05That's not what this is though.
12:06Like Josh hasn't had that.
12:07I see another comment, Michaela.
12:09Josh is too vanilla.
12:11Please go to my page and look at how many trick plays they use just under Cam Newton
12:16and Mac Jones.
12:17Joshua Daniels is not vanilla.
12:19The concern is whether he can integrate the amount of window dressing we see, whether
12:23he's going to fully take advantage of Drake May's legs, mobility, and all that.
12:27But I'm sorry, I'm kind of getting ahead of myself again.
12:29In terms of other coordinators or other, there was no one that was better than Josh in that
12:34role.
12:35But I still like the fact that Alex Van Pelt, he's not gone.
12:37Maybe he stays on as a senior offensive assistant, a quarterback's coach.
12:41Basically what I think his role would be was trying to make the transition from his offense
12:46to Josh's offense, which is not too dissimilar.
12:48They're both left foot up West Coast offense type of footwork.
12:51A lot of the same concepts, just easier verbiage, which with a guy like Drake May, you can take
12:56in a lot of information.
12:58I would love to see him in the Aaron Hart Perkins where it's just ghost ghost.
13:03Exactly.
13:04I'd love him to be able to say ghost, and then everyone knows what their job is.
13:07That type of free up offense that we saw, that was in 2011 mostly.
13:10But even in 2012, we saw it as well.
13:13And also the bones of Bill O'Brien's offense were what Josh McDaniels was trying to do.
13:17And Braybull said, cadence, tempo, all those things we want to dictate on offense based
13:22on what our guys can handle.
13:24TBD with Josh on the entire spectrum, but my concerns with him are not, can he sequence
13:29plays?
13:30Can he call plays the right way?
13:31You know, all those things that we worried about last season that I gave Alex Van Pelt
13:34passes for because he was an experienced this season.
13:37I'm saying, no, Josh, like this needs to be a legit NFL offense on time.
13:42Not a lot of pre-snap penalties that are unnecessary.
13:45Like I just expect a much higher standard.
13:47And I wouldn't have said that with a lot of other coordinator candidates because they
13:51don't have the experience.
13:52Now with Mike Braybull, with Josh McDaniels, you have guys that are experienced who have
13:57been in this system and understand what it means to be a winning team, which cannot be
14:02emphasized enough because players were telling us this towards the end more about players,
14:06but obviously that trickles up towards the rest of the staff as well.
14:09So yeah, I didn't think there was anybody better than Josh more interesting.
14:12Yes.
14:13Higher ceiling for sure.
14:15But I still think we're just talking about Josh.
14:17This is the only guy that has anywhere near the resume he has.
14:21So, you know, I'm happy.
14:22I feel like I'm like losing breath, but I just want people to be excited about this.
14:26It's upsetting seeing people that are like, Oh, Josh, a retread.
14:29I get it.
14:30I just want everybody to get on this side of the fence where, Hey, this is going to
14:34be a real offense again.
14:35I think the same people that are complaining about it are the same people or the people
14:41that are complaining about are the people that gave a lot of crap, I think, to Mac Jones
14:45towards the end of his career.
14:47Well, Mac Jones's first season with Josh McDaniels as a rookie, he threw 22 touchdowns.
14:51He threw for 3,800 yards.
14:53Oh my God.
14:55The team went 10 and 7, and they ranked 6th in points per game with 27.2.
15:00They put up 250 burgers on the Jaguars and the Jets.
15:04And one of them was him throwing the football to Christian Wilkerson.
15:07And people are going to be like, Oh, those were against bad teams.
15:10When's the last time the Patriots blew out a bad team?
15:12They haven't scored 30 since 2020.
15:15I'm pretty sure 2022.
15:16The last time the Patriots scored 30 points was the Bailey's Appy game against the Cleveland
15:20Browns.
15:21Like there's a ceiling here.
15:23There's a higher ceiling here.
15:24Someone mentioned.
15:25Oh, Daniel Oyefusey mentioned today how Vrabel is a floor raiser.
15:30I think McDaniels is an immediate floor raiser for the softball.
15:33Oh, 100%.
15:34You're going.
15:35I don't know about the ceiling with, you know, the Ben Johnson and the number one offense.
15:42But like, look, this is a good hire.
15:44I'm actually kind of surprised that people don't like this move.
15:48We're getting dumped on for all of our old bad takes.
15:50Like what?
15:51Taylor wanted poke over lad.
15:53We're getting crap for the fact that we were excited for Mayo.
15:57Like, folks, you live and you learn.
15:59And you know what?
16:00If this all blows up in our face, then fine.
16:03At least this time we're banking on proven commodities.
16:06That going forward is where I'm no longer.
16:09And I've said this with Vrabel, even though he is proven in Tennessee, I'm not just going
16:13to give him the benefit of the doubt fully.
16:15I want to see what he and Josh do on the field and how this all comes together.
16:19But like, no one is saying they're guaranteed to be great.
16:22But it's when you're looking at the context of the situations like last year, offense
16:26or free agency sucked.
16:28The Patriots didn't get a lot of good players.
16:30And you're like, you know what?
16:31It wasn't great.
16:32You're not a team that people want to go to.
16:34I get it this year with the coaching staff.
16:36And that was actually coaching staff last year was the same story.
16:38But this year it's like, oh, no, they're getting guys with track records of success who actually
16:43have connections around league and all these things.
16:45So I just it's not the same situation as before.
16:48Like Josh McDaniels has proven himself.
16:50Mike Vrabel has proven himself.
16:52They need to do it in this situation.
16:54And no one is assuming they're going to be great or anything like that.
16:57We're far past that.
16:58We've been on the beat for a whole me for a whole two years, you for all three, four.
17:02Like we've been here long enough to know that nothing can be assumed.
17:06But at the same time, I think at the very least, if you're a Patriots fan who's hoping
17:09they can get themselves back to seriousness, back to relevancy and all those things, it's
17:15who are part of the winning culture and know what it takes, but also hopefully can adapt
17:20to the current times.
17:21Hundred percent.
17:22Let's keep reacting to Josh in a second.
17:23But first, I want to give a quick shout out to our sponsors at both Price Picks and Game

20:12You can get it in the TD Garden, Celtics as well.
20:15And hey, maybe next year tickets go a little bit higher.
20:18But if you use that code CLNS, $20 off, take a little bit off the top.
20:22Come hang with me and Taylor as Josh McDaniels gets to call the Patriots offense next season.
20:30So back at it.
20:31Josh McDaniels is the Patriots offense coordinator.
20:34I think we're pretty much 50-50 here.
20:37As far as people like it, people hate it.
20:40But let's use D's super chat here because D sent us $5.
20:44We greatly appreciate that.
20:46Today's offense is nothing like when McDaniels is OC.
20:49It's way more creative.
20:50Nobody wants to see 3rd and 8 all day screen all day.
20:53People complain a ton about the Josh McDaniels 3rd and 8 screen.
20:58And look, sometimes it gets annoying and repetitive.
21:01And I do – not even repetitive.
21:03But it's not even really 3rd and 8.
21:06Like if there's 3rd and 8, he'll call the right play to get to the 6.
21:11And occasionally it's a screen that works.
21:13And other times if they're backed up it's more like 3rd and 15 where it's like, you know what?
21:17We're going to see if we can get it.
21:18Take what we can get on a screen.
21:19If we can break one, great.
21:20And if not, we live to see another down.
21:22We live to punt.
21:23And we live to end every drive in a kick, which is basically what every team wants to do.
21:29You want to punt.
21:30You want to kick a field goal.
21:31You want to kick an extra point.
21:32So sometimes I would say that it gets kind of like, all right, come on.
21:37You could have called something better than that.
21:38But again, it's better than so much of the alternatives.
21:40So I don't really like – although I do like the super chat,
21:43not a fan of the complaining about the 3rd and 8 screen.
21:46My thing is I don't like critiquing play calling.
21:50We've talked about this.
21:52Because it's so – one, it lacks the context of why the play was called.
21:58You don't know if there was a certain call that they really wanted to avoid the situation,
22:02especially with smarter play callers.
22:04And I guess I kind of honestly did both because with Alex Van Pelt,
22:07I was like, he doesn't really know what he's doing a whole lot.
22:09And he's like, I'm doing this, so I'm going to give him some grace.
22:12And with Josh McDaniels, there's got to be a little bit of that.
22:15But at the same time, if it's an egregious mistake –
22:18and a lot of these are decided by the head coach,
22:20so not all of this is going to go on Josh.
22:22But if you want to punt on 4th and 2 in your own territory or in the opponent's territory,
22:27yeah, that's a pretty bad sign.
22:29But the whole him going for the screens, think about when he was doing that.
22:34That was mostly when the team wasn't very good.
22:36And also when you have a quarterback like Tom Brady, who unfortunately on 3rd and 15,
22:41yeah, in really important situations are going to go for it.
22:44But you also understand that your quarterback is a pocket passer who can't really move around.
22:48If they can just tee off on him, knowing they're in a 3rd and impossibly long situation,
22:52especially if you're running the game, yeah, I'll go with a screen or a run
22:55because I'm not letting you tee off on my Hall of Fame pocket quarterback
22:59when I don't need to because the game isn't on the line.
23:01So I feel like these are the same – like, no offense, D, I love you.
23:05But these are the same recycled things we hear about anybody who doesn't like an offensive coordinator.
23:09Their play calling sucks. The sequencing sucks. Da-da-da-da-da.
23:13Sometimes that's true. Josh McDaniels is one of the best at his job in the entire NFL.
23:18And the reason he hasn't been in football, and I know somebody asked me this on Twitter,
23:22why has he been coaching?
23:24He burned three organizations, one because he just actually burned them
23:28and didn't even kind of let them at the altar, and two others because he was so bad
23:32they had to fire him prematurely.
23:35There's not a whole lot of teams that are dying to get Josh McDaniels in the building
23:38because of that, and he has more familiarity with the Crafts, with the Patriots.
23:43So it's a little easier to come back to this system,
23:45one that's been running on something he grew up in,
23:47versus another team that doesn't have as much familiarity with him,
23:50especially considering the Patriots' coaching tree is not terribly extensive
23:54because most people who leave under Bill Belichick did not work out.
23:58So, yeah. No, that's all I have.
24:01We're going to get to the Patriots' defensive coordinator search in a second here.
24:05We'll talk about that quickly.
24:06Before we get out of here, we'll probably rip it here for another five, ten minutes.
24:11But before we get into the D.C. stuff,
24:14any more thoughts on who Josh can now bring in to his offensive staff?
24:19Quarterbacks coach, assistant quarterbacks coach, wide receivers.
24:22And I know that it's early, and we don't have a ton of info out there yet.
24:26Any immediate thoughts?
24:27I look at Jerry Szaplinski from the Rams who worked with Josh before.
24:31He worked with him here, and he worked with him in Vegas.
24:34I wonder if Chad O'Shea still potentially could come over from Cleveland.
24:37Worked with Rabel there, worked with McDaniels here.
24:40And there was another name.
24:42Oh, Alex Van Pelt.
24:43I know you talked about it a little bit before,
24:45but do you think there's any chance they still retain him and keep him around
24:48to maybe try and work with Josh,
24:50given what he did with Drake Mays' development last season here in Foxborough?
24:54I think a chance for sure.
24:56It's going to be tough because, like we talked about it,
24:58he's going to have to take a demotion.
25:00That's not great for your reputation in the NFL,
25:02but if you're also the guy who's associated with Drake Mays,
25:05that'll probably get you some more offensive coordinator opportunities.
25:08Like we've talked about going to Buffalo and taking a media job.
25:11But we have no idea what the guy wants to do.
25:13I want to be very clear this is all up in the air.
25:15Another name I'll throw in, though, for the assistant coaching search is
25:19Cole Popovich was the offensive line coach for a bit.
25:22I think he followed Josh McDaniels to Vegas.
25:26Might have to do a little bit more digging on who his assistant coaches
25:29are going to be necessarily.
25:31I'm just thinking Nick Caley.
25:32He's not going to come back here.
25:33He's already got it.
25:34I doubt it.
25:35He's got too much momentum in L.A., I think.
25:37Yeah.
25:38Yeah.
25:39No, he's not going anywhere.
25:40But the assistant coach is a little bit tougher, but I would throw in –
25:42oh, I'm sorry.
25:43Greg Popovich.
25:44Wait, is it Cole?
25:45No, it's Cole.
25:46Cole is correct.
25:47Oh, it is Cole.
25:48Somebody – okay.
25:49Greg Popovich is the basketball coach, right?
25:50Yes.
25:51Greg Popovich is the basketball coach.
25:52Right.
25:53Okay.
25:54Yeah.
25:55Damn it, Adam Bentley.
25:56Just kidding.
25:57That's fine.
25:58I should have known better.
25:59But that's the really one big one I would think of.
26:01Yeah, no.
26:02I'm going to need to do a pretty extensive background check on that one.
26:03Yeah.
26:04So that's what I'll kind of – we'll sort of end the Josh talk a little bit here and
26:08say that that's our rapid reaction, and we're going to be back on Pat's Daily as we always
26:12are.
26:13We'll guide out at tomorrow at some point.
26:14We'll do our mailbag, but we're also going to dive a little bit deeper into what Josh
26:18McDaniels, his offense, can bring with Drake May.
26:21And again, we'll look at some assistant coaches.
26:23We'll take some research more in depth there and see how they can fill this thing out.
26:27So we're going to move on for a second here.
26:29We're going to talk a little bit of the defensive side where, according to Albert Breer, the
26:36Patriots already have permission to interview Terrell Williams as their defensive coordinator.
26:41He's with the Lions right now as their D-line coach and is somebody who worked with Mike
26:46Braybill in Tennessee, was an assistant head coach under Mike Braybill in Tennessee.
26:51It sounds like there's momentum building here for him to ultimately be here.
26:55I know Matt Zenitz from 24-7 Sports and CBS Sports reported earlier, while we were on
27:00our show this afternoon, that it looks like Williams is the front runner to land the job.
27:05And also, they have interviewed Ryan Crow, who's the offense outside linebackers coach,
27:11for the position as well.
27:14They are now, at least once they interview Terrell Williams, they will be Rooney Rule
27:19compliant for defensive coordinator.
27:22And Crow, I believe Crow's a minority, correct?
27:25Yeah.
27:26I mean, he's darker.
27:28Crow Williams.
27:30He's Italian as hell.
27:32I can say that because I'm Italian.
27:35That's fair.
27:36But Crow Williams come in for interviews and then Terrell Williams looks like the front
27:40runner.
27:41So what do you make of it?
27:42Do you think it should be Williams?
27:43And how do you see that ultimately playing out as we continue to sort of react here to
27:46the Patriots coaching staff?
27:47Yeah.
27:48I mean, again, we've mentioned it, but the fact that he was promoted to assistant head
27:51coach, Mike Vrabel let him coach the first preseason game in 2023, clearly has a lot
27:56of respect for Terrell Williams.
27:57And Terrell Williams has also developed a ton of very talented defensive linemen.
28:01Terrell Casey, Jeffrey Simmons, Harold Landry.
28:04These are guys who made the Pro Bowl under his watch.
28:07And obviously, he did a great job with the Lions, despite the fact that Aiden Hutcherson
28:10went down very early in the season.
28:12So it makes perfect sense that he would be the front runner.
28:14Ryan Crow, though, at least seems like someone who may join the staff.
28:17Maybe they throw a senior defensive assistant tag on to bring him over.
28:20But we mentioned it.
28:21The Ohio State connection is there with Vrabel.
28:23He was at Vrabel throughout his time in Tennessee.
28:26Very highly respected outside linebackers coach.
28:28You can see it in the way the players respond to him.
28:31So I can see him potentially joining the staff.
28:33Although you have Drew Wilkins, he's the outside linebackers coach.
28:36So if he did, that would be interesting.
28:38But Terrell Williams seems like the very obvious front runner for this job.
28:41Yep.
28:42So it sounds like that is going to be the case.
28:43Let's get a couple more in the chat here.
28:45Reactions to Josh McDaniels.
28:47Before we get out of here, I see plenty of super chats.
28:51So thank you guys so much.
28:53This one is again from Dee.
28:54A $2 super chat.
28:55McDaniels was only available because nobody wanted him.
28:58I disagree.
29:00Maybe not completely disagree.
29:03He was around the area.
29:07I think he wanted to be here.
29:08He spent last season around some college programs.
29:12And I think that this fit just makes sense for both sides.
29:15I do wonder too, like he could have probably had jobs elsewhere.
29:19At lower level.
29:20Maybe quarterbacks coach and OC in college.
29:22Working as a consultant like Mike Brable did.
29:25Something tells me he was waiting this out and thinking that he could come
29:28back here and take this job.
29:29So I don't necessarily believe that it's just because nobody wanted him
29:32that he's here.
29:33And then another one here.
29:34Do we feel like the Patriots, at least the owners,
29:36are stuck in the past era?
29:38I feel like RKK only wants familiarity or the people who have been in
29:42here.
29:43I can see where people are coming from.
29:45Yeah.
29:46It's not like.
29:49Like these are still good hires.
29:51It's not like they're taking like.
29:53It's not like they did what Jim Irsay did.
29:55Right.
29:56And went and got Jeff Saturday because he was a really good center.
29:58So I'm going to make them our interim head coach.
30:00Right.
30:01This is Mike Brable.
30:02Who's been here.
30:03Been here and been a head coach.
30:05And then it's Josh McDaniels.
30:06Who's been around as an OC.
30:08So I see where they're coming from,
30:10but as far as stuck in the past era as well,
30:12I think when you look at the Joe McDonald hire that we mentioned earlier
30:15as a, you know,
30:16a senior analytics guy in the front office,
30:18Brable coming in,
30:20knowing his analytics background from both Tennessee and Cleveland.
30:23There,
30:24there is reports of sort of a,
30:26an old age inside to that building,
30:30but I feel like they're sort of starting to turn a corner here,
30:33especially this season in the direction that they're going.
30:35You know,
30:36front office wise,
30:37it definitely seems like they're trying to at least modernize their
30:39approach.
30:40I think they're going to add more people that speculation,
30:42but the fact that they did hire from somebody who's from another sport,
30:45as we know,
30:46the Browns did does kind of show the effect that the Browns are having
30:49on Mike Vrabel.
30:51And in terms of getting stuck in the past,
30:53man,
30:54like I understand again,
30:55that people want something new,
30:57but what was the past for the Patriots winning games,
31:00going into playoffs,
31:02winning playoff games,
31:03winning Superbowl.
31:05The past is not always a bad thing.
31:07The past is a bad thing.
31:08When you refuse to update your offense and support your offense.
31:12When you refuse to adjust the way that you interact with players and staff
31:16members to the point where people don't want to work for you because they
31:20feel that they are not being heard to,
31:21or listened to or respected.
31:23That is what the old version of the Patriots needed to desperately change
31:27the rest of it.
31:28We heard constantly.
31:29Yeah.
31:30You don't think we're fun.
31:31It doesn't really matter what you think because we're winning.
31:33And we think winning is fun.
31:34And Mike rebels acknowledges different generation of players.
31:37These young guys may take something different to buy in.
31:39A lot of that is who you bring into your building in the culture you have
31:43around them that affects how they end up developing because a player coming
31:46into the NFL,
31:47maybe not necessarily having the right perspective doesn't mean they're going
31:50to keep that poor perspective throughout their career.
31:53So I just,
31:54I,
31:55again,
31:56I cannot emphasize enough.
31:57I understand why people were hesitant about variable,
31:59why they are hesitant about Josh,
32:01but also these are two people who are positives to the dynasties that you
32:05built.
32:06And also guys who have had success both here and elsewhere,
32:09Josh,
32:10not to the same degree,
32:11but considering the talent he's had or not has had,
32:14because in the Broncos,
32:15they were pretty good.
32:16I will say that,
32:17but like the Raiders,
32:18Devante Adams had one of the best scenes of his career.
32:20I think the second best by most metrics,
32:22but Derek Carr is his quarterback.
32:23Derek Carr is not a good player.
32:25I'm sorry.
32:26That's me.
32:27He's not,
32:28he's okay.
32:29He's not a great player,
32:31right?
32:32I think that's fair enough to say in the fact that Josh was able to
32:35help Devante Adams,
32:36not just from targets either.
32:37Like he was up there in yards per reception or yards per target or
32:40something like that.
32:41So yes,
32:42he was getting fed the ball,
32:43but he was also getting chunks.
32:44And that,
32:45a lot of that is Josh McDaniel.
32:46So I just,
32:48I want people to understand that just because it's old doesn't mean
32:51it's bad.
32:52Cause this is not an old franchise.
32:53They used to suck.
32:54This is an old franchise.
32:55They used to be the best in sports.
32:58Sometimes retreads are okay.
32:59As long as those retreads are willing to modernize and take some of
33:04their approaches into the current age,
33:06where appropriate.
33:07The last time the Patriots retread Josh McDaniels,
33:09they won three more super bowls.
33:11So that's all I have to say.
33:13Good hire.
33:14It's good.
33:15Not a good head coach knows how to call an offense knows how to
33:19develop a quarterback.
33:20So that's where we're at.
33:22The Patriots have hired Josh McDaniels as their next offensive coordinator.
33:27It's official.
33:28It's here.
33:29He will be in Foxborough alongside Mike Brable.
33:32So I believe that's going to do it for our rapid reaction here to the
33:36hire on Patriots press pass.
33:38We have a ton more coming down the Pike here on press pass.
33:42So keep it here all night long.
33:44We have an all new,
33:45all 32 podcasts with Mike Giardi and Will Parkinson coming up soon.
33:50Greg Bedard,
33:51John Zanis will react on the Greg Bedard Patriots podcast as well.
33:55And then we may even have for the late night crowd,
33:57the Pat's nation pod with Pat Lane and Matt St.
34:00Gene,
34:01all coming up to react to the news that Josh McDaniels is here.
34:04So we got a full lineup,
34:05full slate.
34:06That's why myself and Taylor came on first to get it done for you,
34:09but make sure you keep it here.
34:10Rate review and subscribe to the channel.
34:12We'll have you covered all night long here.
34:14And myself and Taylor will be back tomorrow as well.
34:16Digging into this even further.
34:18We will also have a mailbag tomorrow.
34:21So ask all your questions,
34:22all your offensive questions,
34:23all your Patriots questions,
34:24anything surrounding Drake may,
34:26because we're here to react to it every step of the way.
34:29We got also one other name to look out for Wes Welker.
34:33Oh,
34:34good point.
34:35Good point.
34:36Wes Welker fired as the wide receivers coach from the dolphins earlier or
34:40last week,
34:41I believe obviously played under Josh McDaniels here in Foxborough is
34:45looking for work.
34:46Patriots don't have a wide receivers coach because Hughes and Underwood are
34:49not returning.
34:50So potentially look out for him to be here.
34:52So that's going to do it here for our emergency Patriots daily episode
34:55reacted to the news that Josh McDaniels is back in Foxborough as offensive
34:59coordinator until tomorrow.
35:01Thanks for watching.
35:02There's a ton of you in here.
35:03We appreciate it.
35:04Don't go anywhere.
35:05More reactions coming up until tomorrow on Patriots daily.
35:07He's Taylor.
35:08I'm Mike.
35:09Take care of yourselves,
35:10take care of each other,
35:11and we will see you next time.
35:13Peace out.
