00:00I am joined by Robert Griffin, the third James White field. Yes, Nina Kimes. All right. So
00:10first play, we're going to look at second into one of the Patriots first offensive plays.
00:17What is going on everybody? Mike Padleck here. No Taylor, Kyle's some technical difficulty,
00:22excuse me, technical difficulties on his end, but we could not pass up the opportunity to
00:28have on friend of the show. Now, third time on the Patriots daily podcast, as you saw him
00:33in the intro there, it is James White, three times Superbowl champion, the host of the money
00:38down podcast, color analyst for sports USA. As I said, friend of the show and somebody who also
00:44spent eight seasons in new England as a running back all under new offensive coordinator, Josh
00:50McDaniels. So we want to get all the info you have on Josh, what it's going to look like for Drake
00:55what it looks like over those eight seasons. But first and foremost, James, thank you so much for
01:00coming on, taking your time. How is everything going in your on, uh, in your end in your life
01:04so far this year, everything's been going well, did a lot of different things, you know, throughout
01:09this year from, you know, being a color analyst for sports USA, helping out at, you know, NIU,
01:15you know, being a part of that program this season, doing some stuff at CBS sports HQ,
01:21and then obviously doing my podcast as well. So kind of, kind of been all over the place,
01:25but it's been, it's been a ton of fun. Just trying to stay busy in this retired life.
01:29I was going to say, you're not really retired. You're doing pretty much everything under the
01:32sun. Now you see you, uh, popping up everywhere. So, uh, good to hear it where, uh, obviously happy
01:37for you being Patriots coverage and Patriots fans. Uh, that's all awesome stuff. Now, uh,
01:42the Patriots did just hire Josh McDaniels as their OC. We do want to get into that,
01:46your experience with him, kind of how that offense works. Uh, but first you haven't been on
01:51the show with us, uh, since the season and Gerard Mayo was obviously fired basically right after,
01:57uh, week 18. And I know that you seemed a little bit surprised at that happening,
02:01at least in your reaction on social media, uh, but now a couple of weeks out
02:05seeing how that went down and seeing how the transition has gone.
02:08Uh, just what was your reaction to that? Do you think it was the right decision,
02:12the wrong decision and, uh, sort of where the Patriots are at post, you know,
02:16obviously Gerard Mayo's exit for me, I wouldn't say, I guess I was surprised. I just thought,
02:24you know, would crab actually hiring Mayo, the expectation that it was going to take,
02:28you know, more than one season. That's kind of my way of looking at it. If you're hiring a first
02:34time head coach, you know, only five years into coaching the league and everything and hiring a,
02:39a fairly, you know, new staff, a lot of guys doing things for the first time,
02:44I would expect you would think it was going to take time and you wouldn't expect it more of a
02:47league. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? So that was more of my idea on it. So that's
02:52maybe why I was caught a little off guard by it. Um, I understand the whole contract thing where,
02:59you know, it was written in his contract that he's going to be the next coach, but
03:02you can restructure contracts. You see it all the time with, you know, players and coaches or
03:07whatever you, whatever you, you know, so have it. So that's why it caught me off guard. Like I said,
03:12I don't know whether it's the right or wrong move. I mean, things could turn around completely
03:16this year. Things may not, you know, only time will tell. I just thought it just wasn't necessarily
03:21fair, you know, on Mayo's part, putting a tough spot. Um, but Hey man, that's the nature of this
03:27league is result oriented business. You know, fans weren't happy, crash, not happy. He wants to be,
03:33wants a team to compete a little bit better. So tough decisions have to be made.
03:38It is, you're right. And that is the tough part. And you said it best where he was put in,
03:42you know, it felt like virtually impossible decision, at least her situation, at least
03:47down the stretch, right. Where, you know, the roster is shot first time, head coach,
03:51first time coordinators off the, uh, across the board. And then he said, he's supposed to make,
03:56uh, you know, lemons out or lemonade out of oranges. And it's like, well, you know,
04:00what are we doing here? And then it gets to the end and obviously, uh, it doesn't go well, but
04:04they had to make their decision. You said it, right. It is a business and they had to do what's
04:07best for the team. And now we're on to the Mike variable era and the Josh McDaniels era, which is
04:12why we wanted to truly have you on this show here. Um, I want to get your thoughts on Josh coming in
04:19a third time and, uh, you know, what it, what it's like working under him, but first and foremost,
04:25I guess with a rookie quarterback and with the other options out there, how would you characterize
04:31the hire of Josh McDaniels again? Was it the right hire? Do you think they're in, you know,
04:35going in the right direction, bringing him back here? I think it's a great hire. You know, this
04:40side of the ball on the offense has been a struggle bus for the last few years since he's left. Um,
04:45it's been very disoriented from the offense line to inconsistency with the receivers,
04:50just inconsistencies, you know, as a whole, you know, as an offense, I think the main part has
04:55been no lack of details and a lack of execution. And what Josh McDaniels is going to emphasize is
05:01details, execution, and preparation, all the things that you need to have, you know, in a
05:06good offense. And like I said, a couple of these guys that are still on the roster, they've got
05:10to play under Josh McDaniels. I'm sure they're happy to have him back. It's a familiar sister
05:14for them. And it's good that some of those guys will be there like Kendrick Bourne, you know,
05:19guys like David Andrews or guys like Hunter Henry, they can really help those younger
05:25players and really get them to buy into the process because it's not easy. It's not going
05:30to be easy for a lot of those young players. It's going to be a lot different than what you've been
05:33doing those last couple of years. So it may be easy for you to be like, oh man, I can't,
05:38I can't rock with this. It's a little too tough. This guy's getting on me a little bit too hard,
05:42but it's, he's getting on you because, you know, he wants the excellence. He demands the excellence.
05:47And if you buy in the results, you know, we'll show. So that's why I'm glad some of those guys
05:52that have played under him are still there to help some of those younger players. I think it's
05:57great how I know a lot of people will say his offense is outdated and this and that. I'm not
06:02with that. I mean, football is like, I know people do all this shift in motion, whatever, these fast
06:07motions, but it's all the same thing at the end of the day, they're just dressing it up a little
06:11bit different. And we've done probably the most shift in emotion in a different person than
06:17anybody else. I thought our offense was always, you know, really versatile and, you know, you can
06:22move guys in multiple different, you know, different positions or, you know, different,
06:26whatever alignments and everything like that. And right. And the same stuff, but, but it looks
06:30different. So I think he's always done a great job of that. And I've also seen that he, you know,
06:35during his time off this year, he's spent time with the different NFL teams, different college
06:40teams to really, you know, learn a little bit more of what to add, you know, to his offense.
06:45Cause it's a, it's a different style of players these days. They learn differently. And especially
06:50from the college level, as we all seen, like these guys that may not necessarily be prepared
06:55for, you know, some of the, maybe the older offenses that were in the NFL. So I think that,
07:00that way too. I want to get into that side of it, the, you know, the scheme, the, this Earhart Perkins
07:06that it's called the, the sort of the shell of it, even though it's so multiple and there's, you know,
07:10all these different scenarios I want to get into that. But first you mentioned buy-in and there
07:14are some younger players on this team, obviously a rookie in Drake may. And then the two rookies
07:20wide receivers, Jalen Polk, Jayvon Baker, new era of player. You also mentioned, what is it like
07:27working under Josh? What does he expect from you? Is it, you need to know every position.
07:32You need to know your position. Like what's the work ethic that's needed. Is it going to be a
07:37challenge for these guys to turn this over? And again, what does he expect out of, you know,
07:41out of, out of his players each and every day? Yeah. I mean, it's going to be a challenge for
07:45the younger players like Polk and younger players like, you know, Javon Baker, even
07:50probably guys like Kashan Bhutib just because he's going to expect, you know, you to know certain
07:55things. Like maybe you, maybe it takes you a couple of weeks to get it. Maybe it takes you
07:59a couple of months. Maybe it takes you, you know, who knows a couple of games before you really,
08:04you know, get into a rhythm. But for those guys, for me, it's just like, just don't get
08:07discouraged about it. You know, some guys is going to want to learn multiple positions. Some
08:12guys may get put in a box for one position. Then once you know, show that you can do that, then
08:17you'll get more put on your plate. So I think it just all depends on what you show you're able to
08:22do and practice. And then, you know, as you prove yourself and practice, improve yourself in games,
08:27then the ball started coming your way more and more of the plays will get designed for you.
08:32I just think he just demands you to work hard and practice the pit and demands you to prepare,
08:36prepare hard, like everything serious to like from walkthroughs, you know, walkthroughs after
08:43meetings, walkthroughs before practice. You know, he's all about the details, you know,
08:46make sure you're not, your eyes aren't in the wrong place in the walkthrough. Your eyes are
08:51not in the wrong place, you know, in practice, you know, whatever it may be, he's going to be
08:54on top of it. He, he does a great job of not allowing people to slip up and make errors at
09:00any point. And I think that's why, you know, he's such a good office coordinator. It can be,
09:05it can be a lot of times for sure. You know, you, you know, day before the game,
09:09you walk it through every single play, you know, everything that might possibly happen
09:13that the defense might do it. It's a lot like, man, like this is long, but when the game rolls
09:17around, it's like clockwork because, okay, we've already walked through every single thing. I'm
09:22ultra confident. So it's just, those guys had to buy into the process. And like I said, they
09:26definitely can. And I think he can get the most out of Jay LaPole. He can get the most out of
09:30Jaylon Baker, Keyshawn Booty. So as long as those guys work hard and believe in what's going on,
09:35they'll be just fine.

10:47game. You mentioned the, you know, knowing what every scenario is going to be on every certain
10:52play. So you always have the answer to the test. And I heard, uh, Tom Brady was on Colin Cowherd,
10:57uh, Fox sports a couple of weeks ago or a couple of months ago at this point, maybe,
11:01but Colin asked him like, was it just difficult at the end working for Bill and Josh because they
11:07expected so much and you couldn't just relax on a Saturday night, but instead you were going
11:11through everything. And Tom said it was the exact opposite where no, it's actually refreshing that
11:16we sit there and we go through everything. And so that if there's a 5% chance, something's not
11:21going to work. We don't just say, well, we're going to take the 95%. We're going to know what
11:25the other answer is to this as we know what everything is. And so I'm glad you said that it,
11:30it, you know, sounds like it makes a ton of sense from that. And again, it's just,
11:33it's the prep, it's the work, it's the prep, it's the knowing, okay, how do we answer this? Look,
11:37how do we answer this blitz? How do we answer this shell? Uh, things of that nature. One more thing
11:41on Josh, I guess how similar slash different, uh, you know, was working under him versus, you know,
11:48working under bill. I know it's different because it's an OC versus a head coach, but
11:52I feel like one of the, the knocks on Josh has been, you know, when he goes off to be a head
11:57coach and takes on more than just offensive coordinator duties, that's kind of where things
12:02go arise. So were they the same, were they different? How, you know, how would you, I guess,
12:08look at their two different coaching styles? I mean, no, everybody's going to be somewhat
12:12different, you know, as a coach. Um, I think for, for Josh and bill, they're both about the
12:18details. They're both about the preparation. I said, but they're, they're going to have different,
12:22you know, personalities for me. You know, obviously I'm going to interact more with,
12:26with Josh and I'm more than I ever did with bill because bill's a little bit more of a,
12:30a defensive coach. He's probably sitting in those meetings a little bit more than
12:33he ever was with the offense. So Josh was in full control of what the,
12:37the office was doing, but I would say that they're fairly similar. I wouldn't say,
12:41you know, as far as the lack of success he had as being a head coach, I don't think that's
12:47necessary to me. It's not completely a hundred percent just on him. Sometimes it's all about,
12:52you know, everything that's going on within the organization, not being, not being the right fit
12:57and at the right time from whatever GM ownership and just the players too. Like if you were able
13:03to always say, if you're able to just take our roster from new England and put them, you know,
13:07in Vegas, you probably win a ton of games, right? Unfortunately, that's not, that's not how
13:13this thing works. You gotta try to figure out, you know, who's going to be your guys.
13:17No, those star guys that are already there that are under contracts. If those guys don't,
13:21don't buy into what's going on and they don't get to believe in what's going on,
13:24then it's kind of hard for those younger guys to really get it going. So it's easy to kind of lose,
13:31you know, your locker room, I would say, if you know, some of your good players,
13:35there aren't in belief of what's going on. So I think sometimes it can be put in a difficult spot.
13:39I know a lot of people just automatically say, if a lot of these coaches, they don't win,
13:43you know, where they're at, they're just these bad coaches or sometimes just not the,
13:48the greatest situation. I mean, maybe they're not good head coach. Maybe, I don't know.
13:52I'm not, I'm not in the building, so I don't know. I'm not, I haven't sat in there.
13:57Only those people, people who are in those locker rooms or in those meetings
14:00will have a better understanding of, you know, how it all kind of went down.
14:05All right. So this, this system, the, you know, the Earhart Perkins system, the EP that Josh runs,
14:10it's been in new England for, you know, since 2000, since him and, you know,
14:14Charlie Weiss were kind of there starting the entire thing. It's evolved in many ways.
14:18We saw your guy's season in 2020 with Cam Newton. He's running bootlegs.
14:21He's running zonery. It's like, it's very adaptable. It's very multiple.
14:26And we also mentioned all of the answers to the tests that Tom had because he was in it for so
14:31many years, right? The reason I'm saying this is also listening to an episode of Edelman's podcast
14:38with Josh talking about preparing a young quarterback and developing a young quarterback
14:42and putting a certain amount of plays in his bucket. Okay. He, we can take care of red zones
14:47today. We can take a third, take care of third down today. We can make sure the center exchange
14:52is all set now and not putting everything on his plate. I guess I'm all the, the big question here
14:58is what exactly is this offense and how difficult is it? Is it going to be for Drake May to pick it
15:05up? And I know that you've kind of seen it firsthand because you also saw the whole thing
15:09installed for Mack Jones, his rookie season. So what's this going to look like? The answers aren't
15:14going to be all there right there, but I'm just curious about your view on this Josh McDaniels
15:18offense. I think it's just a multiple offense. It's an adaptable offense. Like I said,
15:23it could be a game plan offense. It just, it's almost like a week to week thing. Like obviously
15:28we had like our core plays that you would run, you know, every single week, but you know,
15:33facing certain defenses, you have to scheme up your offense based on the defense that you're
15:37going up against. Maybe they're a very good, you know, run defense and we may not be able to,
15:42we may not expect to run the ball very well and we'll go into the game plan. I think we may have
15:47to throw it to win the game or vice versa. Maybe they, we think they have a very good pass coverage
15:51or this and that nature. Maybe we can't throw it 40 times. We're going to have to run the ball
15:5530 times and win this game. We're not just going to walk out there saying like, okay, we're,
16:00we're just going to do our thing. They stop it. They stop it. They don't, they don't,
16:03that's not necessarily how we would go about it. I think as far as a rookie quarterback,
16:09I said, there's going to be a lot on your playlist. I don't know what he was responsible for
16:14under Alex, Alex Van Pelt, you know, and company, but he's going to be responsible for Mike points
16:19in the run game, responsible for Mike points in the passing game. He's going to be responsible for,
16:23you know, checking protections, going to be responsible for, you know, maybe
16:26alert receivers for signage, just making sure they're on the same page. You know, the,
16:30the weak safety blitz is coming and the guy that picked up letting them know that, you know,
16:35still run your route. Like there's, there's like a lot of, you know, different, you know,
16:38pieces to this office is going to be a lot for him at first, but I think it's, it'll be something
16:42that he'll be able to pick up based on what I've seen from him, you know, so far in his rookie
16:46season seemed like the game was pretty slow to him and he wasn't panicking, you know, with
16:51everything, the chaos that was going on around him, he never seemed to panic. So, I mean, I have full
16:56trust and, you know, seeing how Mac was able to pick it up there really quickly, I think Drake
17:00will be able to do, you know, a similar type of thing. So there's going to be a lot of responsibility
17:05on him, a lot of onus, you're going to make some mistakes, I'm sure early on, but you know, as the
17:10year goes on and you know, at the more reps he gets at it, I think he'll be ultra confident and he'll
17:15learn the game kind of front to back and get a better understanding of, you know, everything,
17:19you know, not just what he has to do, but you know, offensive line, running backs, receivers,
17:24I think that's the biggest thing about the offense. Everybody, the more you were in the
17:29office, the longer you were there, you started to understand more of what we're trying to get done
17:33as a whole offense, not just my responsibility and my job and the better you can understand that,
17:39I think the better the offense works. This episode is also powered by Game Time,

18:32quickly. Like that was an impressive. It was really, it was really impressive. I think like
18:36as the the weeks went on during training camp, you're just like, okay, like it's really starting
18:41to click for him. He's making these adjustments. He's making these checks. He's. Yeah. Seeing the
18:45blitz. He's getting the ball out of his hands. He knows where it's hot to rise. Like, okay, like
18:49this is it's pretty impressive for a young guy and he had a really good rookie season. So, I mean,
18:54it's like I said, if you're able to grasp and understand what's going on and really, you know,
18:58work at it and you won't have a problem with it. And so you mentioned to the all all the adjustments
19:04that fall under the quarterbacks sort of, you know, per view, right? The the mic adjustments,
19:09the knowing what the answer is hot off a blitz or adjusting the line protection. Like, at least
19:15from my understanding with the West Coast system they ran last year, a lot of the protections were
19:19on the center and now those are on the quarterback. Yeah. Curious about from a running back's
19:24perspective for you and I guess your position in general, what's on your plate, what's not,
19:29how easy, how challenging is it? I think in a conversation me and you maybe had in the past on
19:35one of our shows or one of my shows, you mentioned that it was difficult for you in season one and
19:39that that's kind of why you didn't play as much. It took you a little while to pick it up and then
19:43it eventually, you know, caught on and you had the career you had. So, what are the responsibilities
19:47of the running back in this scheme? For the running back, I mean, it's like I said, I never
19:51played in a West Coast system but. Right. Like the center can make the mic point and you know,
19:57center or the quarterback can make the mic point, you know, but the quarterback can always,
20:02you know, trumpet at any given time if he sees a certain look based on safety rotation or the
20:07linebackers or the defensive backs and all that but as a running back, it doesn't really make
20:12a difference to you whether the center's making the point or whether the quarterback's making the
20:16point. Now, based on that mic point and the protection, there's a certain, you know,
20:20blitz that you may have and if a guy does a certain thing, you may have to pick up somebody
20:25else. If he, if nobody blitzes, then you kind of get out on your route. So, it just depends
20:28on the protection that's called and just really everybody being on the same page but you do have
20:33to, you know, have a feel for, you know, the offensive line calls and maybe even the different
20:37calls that the quarterback's making and certain protections because that can change, you know,
20:42who you're blocking or maybe it can change, you know, whether you're actually going to get out
20:45on your route and whatnot. So, I think it was a fairly just really good understandable, you know,
20:52system, protection system. For me, I know Brian Hoyer always says because he's been in a ton of
20:56different systems. He's like, it's the most like quarterback like friendly system when it comes to
21:00protection as far as, you know, him picking things up. So, to me, if I hear that from a quarterback
21:06then I think it's it should be friendly, you know, for everybody else as far as picking up blitzes.
21:11Love it. Alright. Well, this was awesome. Ton of good information. We appreciate it. I do have one
21:17final question for you. I know it was reported that Tony Dews is going to come over from the
21:22New York Jets. We don't know if it's running back. Don't know if it's tight ends coach. He's coached
21:26both. You did tweet something the other day with a little eyeball emoji James White that you may
21:32want to return. I don't know if it was here but do something coaching running backs. Is that in
21:37your sights? Is that something you want to do? I don't know if it's here. You don't have to drop
21:41anything but curious about your goals outside of media and maybe if you want to join the coaching
21:45sphere or something. I always like to tease people whenever they whenever they mention that
21:51mention that about me being a running back coach but like I said, if they were to reach out to me,
21:55I'd definitely entertain it for sure especially like with Josh. I know the system. I know him
22:00personally and I think that, you know, makes a difference as far as showing up to work knowing
22:04what, you know, that coach is all about. I don't know if Rable personally but compete against him,
22:09you know, quite a few times whether at Ohio State or with him with the Texans and with the
22:13Titans and everything else. So, you know, him kind of from afar and obviously, you know, he's
22:18a patriot guy too. So, yeah, I definitely entertain in some place that I know and I'm
22:23very familiar with but I don't know if I'm if I'm ready for that, you know, you know, lifestyle,
22:28you know, just maybe maybe somewhere down the line but I said, if if that phone call did happen, I
22:35I definitely listen in and you know, see if it's actually a fit for me currently. Well, I love it.
22:41Yeah, maybe we'll maybe we'll see you around. Maybe we'll have you back.
22:45No, this was good. Again, a lot of great information. So, we appreciate you joining
22:48us. Before we let you go, I know we talked about it a little bit off the top but let the people
22:52know what you're up to, where they can find you. You have a lot of cool stuff going on in the media
22:56world. So, just a quick plug for yourself before we get you out here. Definitely, I mean, you can
23:00check out my podcast, the Money Down podcast. You drop new episodes, you know, weekly, you know,
