00:00Well, that was fast.
00:01Drake Bay.
00:02I told you last episode.
00:03Hey, it's coming.
00:04The windows open.
00:05It could be two weeks from now.
00:07It could be three weeks from now.
00:08It could be four, but it's coming soon.
00:11Yeah, Callahan news flash.
00:12It's coming Sunday.
00:13Drake Mays here and look, if you have been listening for
00:16the last few weeks, you know, I have been on the sit, sit,
00:20sit, sit the kid, keep him away from the worst pass blocking
00:24offensive line, not only in the league, not only that I've
00:26ever seen, but historically, according to ESPN would finish
00:30as the worst past protecting offensive line since at least
00:322006.
00:34I'm so excited to see Drake May.
00:35Look, I made my thoughts clear.
00:37The Patriots are going in a different direction when the
00:39news broke Tuesday is I was literally in the middle of a
00:42jog running around something.
00:44I think Drake is probably going to do a whole lot of against
00:46the Texans.
00:48I sent out a lot of texts made some calls.
00:50These are the folks in the locker room in the organization
00:52couple outside the league being like, hey, what do you make
00:54of this and just wrap my arms around something that you know,
00:57I thought was going to come in a couple of weeks.
00:59It was always inevitable.
01:00They were going to play Drake this season, but why now what's
01:03happening?
01:04They wrote a column stating again, that opinion.
01:07I think they're rushing him into this and this is not, you
01:09know, an issue where everyone's on one side or the other dinner
01:13Lasky Mina comes even Tom Brady.
01:15Last time we heard from him is saying the same thing.
01:17I am just wait, be patient.
01:18It's not going to happen.
01:19So why is it happening now?
01:21Well in speaking with people who were let's say very close
01:25to what's going on here.
01:26The deal is this last time you saw Drake May.
01:29They said to me, he was pushing Jacoby for the starting job.
01:32He was better the last two weeks of camp and in the preseason.
01:36Then Jacoby was since then Drake has only gotten better.
01:39And yes, it's only practice but understanding they were going
01:42to play him.
01:42Anyway, they looked at this game and said, well, we might as
01:46well do it now because the last three weeks Jacoby has been
01:50actively hurting them on offense and the fact that those
01:54two happen together coincided with the schedule and my opinion
01:58based on things that I've heard observed and kind of piece
02:01together did expedite the plan a little bit, but the plan was
02:04not like week seven.
02:06It wasn't week four.
02:07It was he's going to play sooner rather than later.
02:11When that is will be determined by how Jacoby plays and how
02:14Drake practices.
02:15Jacoby played bad Drake practice.
02:17Great.
02:18Here we are.
02:18They made the switch and when I push back and said, okay,
02:22could you have just not picked a team with the Neil Hunter
02:25and will Anderson on the edges again working against your
02:28offensive line?
02:28The worst in the league.
02:29They said, honestly, we don't really care that much about
02:32the opponent.
02:33It's more about him and playing and the fact that we're at
02:35home in their eyes.
02:37I know this for a fact really helped to which again to me if
02:40I'm running the team, I care less about the geographic
02:42location than the team actually on the other side who's going
02:45to give us a lot of problems and do me go over.
02:48I is a really good defensive head coach.
02:50They see it differently.
02:52The dice cast.
02:53They've come up Drake May.
02:54So there's more Intel in that column.
02:56If you haven't read it from Tuesday, but there's background
02:59in there as we just talked about now of why they're doing this
03:02now, how Drake has gotten better specifically with the footwork
03:05playbook mastery and he's been better against pressure.
03:08Alex Van Pelle actually today.
03:10I know everyone's favorite offensive coordinator right now
03:12who I've been plenty critical of said that Drake started a
03:16good on good meaning starting off and starting defense period
03:19where it was all about the Blitz, which also tells you they
03:22think Houston's going to bring a lot of pressure.
03:24Drake May was six for six quote in his decisions.
03:29In that period meaning he did the right thing every single
03:32time.
03:32So yes, that is more coming from the coaches and I would
03:35trust a lot more of what I've heard privately over the phone
03:37and via text.
03:38They want coaches are going to say publicly.
03:39They're never going to bash their own guys, but there's a
03:43lot of overlap there.
03:44So that's what I know.
03:45That's what I've learned.
03:46That's what we're going to go with moving forward.
03:47The Patriots are going to go with Drake May and hopefully
03:49he survives the last 12 games because this is a lot of the
03:51season left to go.
03:53But that's where they're at.
03:53They think he can do it.
03:55They believe that much in him.
03:56And that's why I started that column going.
03:58Hey, if you remember five hours, and this is from Hard Knocks
04:01revealed this five hours before Elliot Wolfe drafted Drake
04:04May, he turned down an offer with multiple first-round picks
04:07and other selections from the Giants.
04:09Then the Vikings also made an offer like that.
04:12I remember the Giants were just a pick six.
04:14So you're going back three spots for a first-round pick and
04:17more from a team.
04:18You know, it's going to stink next year.
04:19They said no.
04:20The Patriots were smitten with Drake May.
04:23They are smitten with Drake May and everyone has fallen out
04:25of love with the Jacoby Brissett experience.
04:27You want to know why Drake May starting on Sunday?
04:29That's it right there.
04:30It's not about the opponent.
04:31It's got a little bit to do with the fact that they're at
04:33home, but the fact that they're just ready and they've been
04:35wanting to do this and Jacoby Brissett's play as of late gave
04:38them a reason why.
04:39What was your reaction when you saw and what do you think?
04:42Very excited.
04:43It was the right decision.
04:45Well, it should have been last week.
04:47Now, I think that would have made much more sense going
04:49against the Dolphins.
04:50I'm sure we'll talk about the Texans, you know, tough defense
04:53to get thrown into the fire, but it was the right decision.
04:56Jacoby Brissett was not getting the job done and I know he
05:00was in a tough spot with the offensive line and under pressure
05:02a lot, but it just 139 or 129 passing yards per game.
05:08Whatever it was.
05:08It just wasn't sustainable as Gerard Mayo said and you turn
05:12it over to Drake May.
05:14There's going to be bumps.
05:15There's going to be bruises.
05:16He's a rookie.
05:17He's going to go through these stuff, but he can help the
05:19offense in ways that Jacoby was not getting it done, you know,
05:23anticipatory throws, pushing the ball downfield, making plays
05:26with his legs, and it'll make hopefully it'll get the receivers
05:30more involved.
05:30You know, those guys were rightfully getting a little frustrated
05:33out there.
05:33So I think it's the right decision to turn to him now and
05:38I say all that too by thinking he's ready.
05:41I think he's ready.
05:42I think he's been ready.
05:44I don't think they're rushing him along here, which is important.
05:47Like he's been one snap away the last five weeks for being on
05:51the field anyway.
05:51So I think they're pretty comfortable with him going out there
05:54in the first place.
05:55So with the talent, he should elevate the offense and I think
05:58he's ready from a mental side.
06:00So I think this is exciting.
06:02We should be excited.
06:03I see a lot of complaining still all over the place.
06:05A lot of negativity.
06:06We should be excited now here and I'm ready to go with the
06:09Drake May era Taylor.
06:11I'm excited.
06:12Also, I'm not quite as a hundred percent sure that Drake May
06:16is necessarily ready, but it does at least give me some faith
06:20that I know Albert be reported that he has been making steady
06:23progression that he's gotten better against the Blitz and we
06:25kept hearing this summer where we asked TC McCartney and Alex
06:29van Pelt.
06:29What exactly is it?
06:31That's keeping him from being a starter and being the better
06:33option.
06:34Why is it better for him to learn behind the scenes and
06:36Pelt kept mentioning, you know, the different pressure schemes
06:38that you're going to see in the NFL and now they've seen the
06:42you know, the Shanahan defensive tree where you got like
06:44Robert Sala.
06:45Now, they've already seen the McDonald coaching tree as well.
06:48So you've got some tape at least from these trees of what kind
06:51of pressure schemes you might see.
06:53Obviously, you know, Scott Peters told us last week.
06:55It's different based on your opponent because they have different
06:57players and you want to scheme to that but I do hope that yeah
07:00mentally he's in a place where he can go out there.
07:02He can command the huddle with confidence, you know, relatively
07:05for a rookie in his first start and be able to still make the
07:08throws and make some plays because you know, I've been on
07:11the bandwagon to wait at least till November to start.
07:13May, you know, once you get a couple weeks of the same offensive
07:15line, but at the same time, I think we may get the same offensive
07:19line two weeks in a row because the unit they weren't perfect,
07:21but they weren't bad enough that you got to make wholesale
07:23changes or bench anybody.
07:25I don't think so.
07:26You got that Kendrick Ford is back and then Jalen Polk and
07:29Keishon booty two guys who has spent a lot of time with Drake
07:32May. If you look in the preseason, his main receivers were Jalen
07:35Polk Keishon booty and I'm in Javon Baker.
07:38Obviously Javon Baker hasn't proven himself yet enough to get
07:41on the field.
07:41But I do think this may have been the best situation for them
07:44to introduce him.
07:45Maybe not against the Texans.
07:46I if they don't run the ball 30 times, I'm going to be legitimately
07:49pissed off, but I really do think this probably was the best
07:52time considering how Jacoby Bursette's been performing the
07:55past couple weeks.
07:56I put on the closest thing.
07:57I got the California blue.
07:58I was literally getting a haircut when the news broke, but
08:01yeah, man, I'm psyched.
08:03I don't like a jackass anymore.
08:04So let's go.
08:07I mean, I was I was one foot out the door about to go grocery
08:09shopping and I saw and I had to run back inside Mike your
08:12thoughts.
08:13So first and foremost, congratulations, Brian Hines on your
08:18on your quarterback.
08:19It's something that you've wanted for a long time here since
08:21week one.
08:22I am obviously excited to make the change.
08:24I think they needed it from a PR standpoint and frankly from
08:28a football standpoint.
08:29It hasn't been good enough at quarterback now two hours before
08:33this report came out from Rappaport.
08:34I tweeted out that, you know, I was actually more of the
08:37mindset where maybe they keep waiting and maybe they let these
08:41front these for the these five offensive linemen continue to
08:45gel together and after last week, it looked pretty good.
08:49So give them some more time to, you know, continue seeing
08:52things through one set of eyes and make it make it happen
08:55that way.
08:55They go to it a little bit earlier.
08:57And the other reason I wanted to allow them to give me a little
09:01bit more time is the fact that this Texans defense gets after
09:05quarterbacks.
09:05They have the highest pressure rate in the NFL right now Patriots
09:08obviously allowing the highest pressure rate in the NFL.
09:11So not a great recipe up front for me, but it's fun.
09:15It's exciting.
09:16See what happens run around make some plays.
09:19It's time for the kid and I think that's that's an exciting.
09:22I keep using that word, but you know, that's that's kind of
09:25where we're at and so be it right, you know, it was never going
09:28to be perfect.
09:29They tried to make it perfect.
09:30They tried to have this cute landing spot and he's going to
09:33develop and but you know guys get hurt things happen and that's
09:37where we're at and ultimately I'm okay with it because they
09:39needed they needed something to go.
09:42I I I guess I'll get my reaction because we kind of jumped
09:45in here.
09:46You know, I said on Patriots beat yesterday Brian that even
09:50if he's not starting this week, you've got to get the ramp-up
09:52started this week and it sounds like for me Rapport.
09:54Maybe they actually started that process last week.
09:56So I think you just hit a tipping point and I think this
10:01shouldn't come out of nowhere.
10:02You had the change in in Gerard Mayo's tone yesterday and then
10:05on top of that you just had, you know, they have an offensive
10:08line.
10:08That's going to be able to play together for the second week
10:10in a row.
10:10You started seeing a group of wide receivers.
10:12Maybe start to emerge as the main guys or Mandy Stevenson
10:15didn't fumble kind of figuring his stuff out.
10:17So my reaction is like I get some people are freaked out about
10:22the way the lines been and look to cover set to this point most
10:27pressured quarterback in football literally 50% of his
10:29dropbacks every other dropback dudes under pressure and I know
10:34some people say well Drake may, you know, the lines can be
10:36better with Drake may it'll help.
10:38I still don't entirely get that argument, but let's say he
10:42even takes 10% off which would be monumental.
10:45He's still one of the five most pressured quarterbacks in
10:47football like I get that but I don't and I was somebody who
10:53was who was preaching patience and saying, you know, don't
10:56start him right away and I said it needs to be better.
11:01It's not necessarily ever going to be good, but it needs to
11:03be better.
11:04I think what you saw last week a group that is definitely
11:08better than what they started with you have some continuity
11:10now in terms of the personnel getting guys healthy is a part
11:15of that to the Texas is the landing spot.
11:18I maybe would have waited another week.
11:19I think the fact that it's going to London and they maybe
11:22have a shorter week of practice impacts that and you know,
11:25now you're waiting two more weeks.
11:27And again, you risk, you know, losing guys in the locker room
11:30as you continue to lose more games, but yeah, the writing
11:34was kind of on the wall that this made sense and just to
11:36backtrack there was somebody saying back when they drafted
11:39him in April.
11:40Yeah, at some point in October.
11:42We'll see him maybe the first week, maybe the last week,
11:44maybe somewhere in between probably some point in October
11:46happy October 8th everybody as to the decision itself and
11:50we'll get into a little bit, you know, Drake may is he ready?
11:56Is this a great opponent for him to be going against, you
11:59know, we'll talk about that in a little bit, but you know,
12:02let me just let me just say and I wrote this and sort of
12:06talked about it on Felder and Maz the other day when the
12:10news came down.
12:11I was on air when the news came down.
12:15This doesn't sit very well with me.
12:18I was all on board for the plan.
12:21First of all, let's go back to the beginning.
12:24I was on board with them drafting direct May 3rd overall
12:27all the way through I have have never had any doubts that
12:32he has the type of traits from his arm strength athletic
12:35ability build.
12:37Would you like his hands to be a little bit better for a
12:39Northeast team?
12:42Yes, but we'll have to see how that goes.
12:44He'll certainly get that opportunity for the rest of the
12:47season.
12:48You know, I think he was very I think he's very raw.
12:53I think he's very on inexperienced compared to other guys
12:57in his draft class who have been, you know, playing in and
13:02on the whole doing a good job to, you know, typical sort
13:04of rookie season other than Jaden Daniels start slow and
13:09start to make progress and you know, you're hoping for the
13:12same thing with Drake May.
13:13I mean, I I would have been fine.
13:16I would have been better.
13:18I would have felt better had they been able to push this
13:21off to say mid-season second half of the season when it
13:28was clear.
13:28The Patriots were out of contention and you can make the
13:30argument that at one and four they're out of contention
13:33right now and that's fine.
13:36But I wanted the Patriots to have a plan and stick to the
13:39plan and it seemed like every week we were hearing like,
13:42you know, all right, they're they're sticking to their
13:44plan, which I was very happy about.
13:47I did not want the Patriots to do what the Jacksonville
13:50Jaguars did when they drafted Blake Bortles and Blake Bortles
13:53never maybe never would have been a you know, a great NFL
13:57quarterback.
13:58He certainly had all the physical skills.
14:01I don't know if he had it mentally.
14:02I think I think Drake may definitely has the intangibles
14:07the the smarts the the traits his upbringing his competitive
14:12myth and competitiveness.
14:14I think all that stuff is off the charts with Drake May and
14:18that's why I was all on board with him being the third
14:20overall pick.
14:21Now.
14:21I did have I did have my draft order Kayla Williams Jaden
14:25Daniels and Drake May if it was Jaden Daniels and Drake
14:28May I would have taken Jaden Daniels Kayla Williams.
14:32The only question which I don't know the answer to the
14:35Bears don't even know the answer to is is his makeup, you
14:40know what you need to be that guy to be you know, one of
14:44the elite quarterbacks.
14:45Certainly.
14:46There's a lot of questions about that Jaden Daniels.
14:48I had fewer questions with Jaden.
14:50It was more physical and whether he could take a beating
14:53given his size and and a six-game sample size is not going
14:58to tell you, you know, it's going to be years.
15:00I mean our G3 was rookie of the year and over Andrew Luck
15:07and what ultimately did him in was injuries along with
15:12you know, some personality things with him, but so so all
15:19on board on Drake May my evaluation coming out of college
15:22was similar to a lot of guys whether it's Greg Cosell or
15:25Dan Orlovsky or whoever love the traits love the flashes
15:31on film definitely green inexperienced under trained.
15:37I would have loved to have spent upwards of a season laying
15:42that foundation retraining him.
15:44So, you know in a similar fashion to Patrick Mahomes, that's
15:49ideally what I wanted for Drake May but everybody's different.
15:51I mean Drake Drake might learn faster than anybody.
15:55He might be picking up whether it's his footwork.
15:59I definitely would like to see him over time and it's not
16:03something that's going to happen in one offseason tighten
16:05up his motion, which I do think is is too long, but that's
16:09something that can be worked on and you know, I just thought
16:15the especially considering this offense and that Alex van Pelt
16:19has said like you need to operate from under center in this
16:23offense, you know, Drake has a long ways to go in terms of
16:28that. I I don't expect him to be under center very much if
16:32it all I just don't think he's very comfortable with that.
16:35I think every opportunity that we've seen him under center.
16:38It's been an adventure and it's not just the center.
16:42So it's it's him as well.
16:45So but that being said and this is part of where the Patriots
16:50are. I think the plans that they had for the season for this
