00:26judges.
00:27And in Brazil, heavy rains triggered strong flooding in the city of Sao Paulo.
00:43Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Televisa Studios in
00:48Havana, Cuba.
00:49We begin with the news.
01:08In Palestine, Israeli forces increased military checkpoints at the entrances to towns and
01:12cities to prevent thousands of displaced people from reaching their homes.
01:17Federal forces established at least 10 new checkpoints around Nablus, installed 36 iron
01:22gates at the entrances to the city, and closed more than 47 roads.
01:27At the same time, civilians in the town of Abud, denounced as vehicles, are being subjected
01:32to exhaustive inspections, which increases tensions in the area.
01:37Meanwhile, Zionist raids continue in several localities, among them Beirutlerkia and Al-Muqayir.
01:47A mass resistance movement released on Saturday four more Israeli soldiers held captive in
01:52the Gaza Strip, whose names were revealed by the spokesman of the Al-Qassam Brigades,
01:56the armed wing of the Palestinian movement, Abu Beira.
01:59According to the information provided, the Israelis to be handed over to their counterpart
02:04will be Karina Adief, Daniel Gilboa, Nama Levy and Liri Elbaz.
02:10Spokesman for the military wing of the Al-Qassam Brigades said that 200 Palestinians will
02:15be released in exchange, among them a leading resistance commander in the West Bank.
02:20Spokesman reported that the Zionist entity agreed to release up to 50 Palestinian hostages
02:25for every Israeli woman soldier released by Hamas.
02:32Released on Saturday as part of a ceasefire deal, Israel freed 70 Palestinian prisoners
02:37in exchange for four Israeli women.
02:41Official sources say that the released prisoners were actually deported and that they have
02:46been transferred to Egyptian hospitals for treatment.
02:48The Palestinian Prisoners Affairs Committee said that once in Egypt, the deported prisoners
02:52will be able to choose to reside in either Algeria, Turkey or Tunisia.
03:02The United Nations Development Program denounced that the Israeli war against Gaza set back
03:07the development of the Gaza Strip by 60 years.
03:11The organization detailed that for the reconstruction of infrastructures in the territory, tens
03:16of billions of dollars will be needed, due to the fact that 70% of the buildings are
03:20completely damaged and affected by the bombardments.
03:23Furthermore, the economic system was totally destroyed after Israel destroyed the productive
03:29infrastructure and eliminated basic services in what experts describe as a loss of at least
03:3460 years of development.
03:39And in Yemen, Houthi forces unilaterally released 153 prisoners of war in coordination with
03:45the International Committee of the Red Cross.
03:48The National Committee for Prisoners Affairs in Sana'a informed that most of those released
03:53are combatants captured in different battlefronts.
03:56It detailed that the measure, which includes humanitarian cases such as the sick, wounded
04:00and elderly, was also coordinated with the United Nations.
04:04The committee pointed out that the release coincides with UN and its team's efforts
04:09to advance in the humanitarian field and to comply with the agreements reached.
04:17We are here, the International Committee of the Red Cross, at the request of the National
04:22Committee for Prisoners, to facilitate the release of 153 detainees.
04:26We have conducted private interviews with them to verify their identities, that they
04:30are in contact with their families and that they are ready to return to their homes.
04:37A broad initiative to pardon and release 153 prisoners from the other side, who were captured
04:44on multiple battlefronts and from multiple governorates.
04:51It is a unilateral initiative from one side.
04:57I am very happy to be released from prison.
04:59I spent six years there, and I thank everyone who contributed to our release from captivity,
05:04headed by Mr. Abdul Malik Badr al-Din al-Houthi.
05:06I also thank the Red Cross for its cooperation and response to us.
05:13Iran's Revolutionary Guard is conducting naval maneuvers as part of a military drill
05:17to face any invasion in the region.
05:20The maneuvers began early January and bring together the armed forces and the Revolutionary
05:25Guard with the aim of training soldiers for possible threats against the nation.
05:30The drill, which will run through March, features modern strategies and sea and land operations
05:34in the Persian Gulf and in the Strait of Hormuz.
05:38The Revolutionary Guard said that the maneuvers are meant to step up security in the region.

06:10Welcome back.
06:11In Colombia, the number of people displaced by violence in Catatumbo region rose to more
06:16than 40,000.
06:17According to data provided by the Unified Command Post, close to 20,000 people sought
06:22refuge in Cúcuta, the departmental capital north of Santander, reliving their localities
06:27due to the armed conflict.
06:29In addition to this number, there are 10,719 Colombian refugees in Ocaña and over 14,482
06:37in Tibu, but hundreds more sought refuge in Venezuela.
06:41On top of the thousands of displaced people, the confrontations between the ELN and FARC
06:45EP dissidents have left approximately 80 people dead, as well as kidnapped and missing people.
07:00Venezuela's Supreme Court of Justices set up the training plan for communal peace judges
07:03selected on December 15, 2024.
07:07The training program is carried out in every municipality of the country, with emphasis
07:10on the promotion of peace, justice, and conflict resolution in accordance with the Organic
07:16Law of Communal Peace Justice.
07:17The training program has a duration of five weeks, after which the justices of peace will
07:22be accredited.
07:23The president of the Supreme Court of Justice, Caris Lía Rodríguez, recalled the vision
07:28of peace of Commander Hugo Chávez and the importance of the popular power to achieve
07:32the objectives of the homeland.
07:40This moment, which we hope will not stop, is a moment of continuous training that will
07:45not only take place in the spaces we designate for this purpose, but also in the streets
07:50with the people.
07:51The participation of the people's power is fundamental to achieve the great objectives
07:55of the homeland.
07:59The president of the Supreme Court of Justices affirmed that President Nicolás Maduro urged
08:03to promote the joint work of state institutions to train justices of peace.
08:14He called on us at the beginning of the year 2024, at the opening of the judicial year,
08:19to jointly promote with the National Assembly, with the National Electoral Council, with
08:24the Ministry of Communes, with the people's power, which is the driving force, the vigor
08:29that pushed us forward, and with all the actors of the state that joined us, in this great
08:33effort.
08:34That became a reality on December 15th, with a massive election.
08:43The foreign minister of Venezuela, Iván Gil, emphasized that there would be no possible
08:47relationship with Chile as long as the current government maintains a posture of disrespect
08:52towards the Bolivarian country.
08:54Through his social media, Foreign Minister Gil expressed that the Chilean bureaucrats
08:59and diplomats of social networks are very funny and ridiculous.
09:02They are so eager to support the empire that they forget the reality.
09:06Since August of last year, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela expelled them from the
09:10homeland of Bolivar and we broke all relations, withdrawing also all our personnel from Chile.
09:16All this because they were dragged to the gringos.
09:19As long as the imitator government of Sebastián Piñera does not assume a dignified role of
09:24respect for our country, there will be no possible relationship.
09:33Meanwhile in the United States, the Senate has ratified Pete Hexeth as Secretary of Defense
09:38in Donald Trump's administration.
09:40Vice President James David Vance, cast the vote that awarded the victory to Secretary
09:44Pete Hexeth.
09:45Hexeth's appointment was troubling because of his involvement in various events, where
09:50he was accused of drunkenness on duty, inappropriate sexual behavior, and possible financial mismanagement.
09:58Hexeth suffered a pre-vote interrogation about a potential sexual assault, which he repeatedly
10:03denied.
10:04He thus pledged to foster a water culture in the Defense Department.
10:14According to the White House statements, U.S. Marines arrive at the Mexican border under
10:19the pretext of supporting border protection efforts.
10:23Washington's shared images of the first Marine Corps elements arriving at the Mexican border
10:27supposedly assist Customs and Border Protection and allegedly protect the United States.
10:33Footage shows trucks operating in their territory a few meters away from the Mexican side, while
10:38the ground is being prepared for the landing of aircraft with armed military personnel.
10:44The Pentagon announced that approximately 1,500 troops will be sent to the border as
10:49the Department rushes to implement President Donald Trump's executive order demanding
10:53a crackdown on migration.
11:11In Brazil, heavy rains triggered strong flooding in the city of Sao Paulo.
11:15Authorities report that the rains caused buildings to collapse, power outages, and hindered the
11:20functioning of public transport.
11:22Several airlines canceled their flights, and at least 21 airplanes were diverted to land
11:27at another airport due to poor visibility.
11:29Forecasters warned that the storm could continue throughout the weekend, causing more flooding
11:34and destruction, and urged the public to stay alert.

12:06Welcome back.
12:07The Serbian government confirmed that it will not impose sanctions against Russia despite
12:11pressure from Western nations.
12:14President Alexander Vucic denounced the Western pressure, which wants to tell Serbia when
12:19and against whom to impose sanctions during the founding event of the Movement for the
12:24People and the State, which gathers all patriotic forces of the Balkan country.
12:28Vucic reminded that it is up to the Serbian people and government to analyze the geopolitical
12:32situation and to decide on the matters concerning the nation.
12:36The head of state also reiterated that the most important issue for his country is its
12:41independence and asserted that Serbia follows the European path, but it will always maintain
12:46brotherly and friendly relations with Russia, China, and other friendly nations.
12:56The Belarusian Central Electoral Commission confirmed that more than 480 international
13:00observers have been created for the presidential elections to be held this Sunday, January 26.
13:06Among those created, there are more than 800 journalists, including over 300 foreign correspondents.
13:12Also 486 international observers being the most numerous mission that of the representatives
13:17of the Community of Independent States.
13:20Likewise, the Electoral Commission detailed that six polling stations were set up so that
13:25nationals living abroad could vote.
13:27In the UK, the decision made last year by the current Labour government of reinstituting
13:40an inheritance tax on some farms has stirred protests in London.
13:44The Labour government said the measure would go into effect in April 2026 to provide vital
13:49new revenue.
13:50Back in December, hundreds of farmers drove their tractors to London for a non-presidential
13:55election.
13:56They claimed that, coupled with existing economic headwinds, the new tax would likely ruin their
14:02family business, for when adding the value of a farmhouse, livestock, and equipment,
14:07they would likely surpass the exemption threshold capped at £1 million.
14:11Beyond that threshold, they would have to pay a 20% tax.
14:16Still half the normal rate, though, but given the low margins in the business, many would
14:21have to sell some of their land to meet the tax requirement.
14:28We have an organic dairy farm in North Devon.
14:30We have 400 cows selling milk to Muller, distributed throughout the UK to various supermarkets,
14:38Sainsbury's, M&S, Waitrose, etc.
14:41We breed all our own replacement animals, so we don't buy in cows.
14:45We try to keep our own bloodline.
14:48We grow all our food for our cows on farm, so we're self-sufficient, part of the organic
14:55element of that.
14:57I'm not against an inheritance tax, personally.
14:59It needs to be targeted correctly.
15:03My view would be that the government needs to review it and target it more specifically
15:10to those that they say they were targeting it at.
15:14The very big landowners who use their money to fund a tax haven.
15:23In Germany, over 15,000 people demonstrated against the far-right.
15:28Citizens have taken to the streets in several cities in rejection of the far-right party
15:31alternative for Germany and other far-right populist tendencies globally.
15:37Socialists rallies had the support of numerous clubs, parties, trade unions and organised
15:41civil society initiatives.
15:43Demonstrators seek to send a signal in favour of a social democratic Germany to confront
15:47the violence and hatred prevailing in Western societies.
15:54For me, it is most important that we stay united against the far-right.
15:59Especially after yesterday and from what we heard from Friedrich Merz,
16:02we have to stand together to fight the far-right.
16:05I think it is important, because of the early German elections, to set a sign.
16:14We see a party that so far gets 20% of votes and might get more and this party shows openly
16:19a racist, discriminatory and intolerant attitude and I think it is important to
16:23send a signal for a tolerant and active democracy.
16:35In Nicaragua, the Games of the Americas 2025 kicked off, a sports event that brings together
16:48outstanding athletes from the region.
16:50The contest began on Friday, January 24th with the presence of six teams from the region,
16:56Cuba, Colombia, Curacao, Panama, Argentina and Nicaragua.
17:00After the opening event, the Nicaraguan team got the first victory in baseball
17:03with five runs against one, against the Cuban team.
17:07For the first edition of the tournament, Nicaragua allocated an investment of more than
17:11$140 million for the construction and renovation of the first labor sports infrastructure,
17:16consolidating itself as a competitive host in the international sports scene.
