A 39-year-old scientist from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali, lost his life after a parking dispute in Sector 67 turned violent. Dr. Abhishek Swarnkar, originally from Dhanbad, Jharkhand, was allegedly assaulted by his neighbor, Monty, following an argument over bike parking on Tuesday night.

Dr. Swarnkar, a distinguished scientist with international publications, had recently returned from Switzerland to work as a project scientist at IISER. He had undergone a kidney transplant and was on dialysis. During the altercation, Monty allegedly pushed him to the ground and punched him. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he could not be saved.

CCTV footage captured the dispute, showing Dr. Swarnkar being attacked before neighbors intervened. His mother, Malti Devi, accused Monty and his family of repeated harassment over parking issues, stating that her son was frequently forced to move his bike. On the night of the incident, Monty allegedly threatened him, leading to a confrontation that turned fatal.

Mohali Police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and are conducting raids to arrest Monty, who is currently absconding. His phone is being tracked to determine his location.

The tragic incident has once again highlighted the rising violence over parking disputes in urban areas, raising concerns about public safety and conflict resolution in residential neighborhoods.
