Apex 5 - Matt Prettyman vs John Hickman.
Transcript
00:00Out of the blue corner, coming in at 6 feet 1 inch, 151 pounds, from Mack Fitness out of Gainesville, Florida, Mack Prettyman!
00:15And fighting out of the red corner, representing Rory MMA from Oakland Park, Kansas, at 5'10", 153.5 pounds,
00:29John Hickman!
00:33And I ask that because, as Bricker just alluded to, look, you can put all your eggs in one basket,
00:40but if your sole thing is, I'm going to take it to the ground, somebody's big right hand can get you,
00:45and of course vice versa, at what point do you not go with the feast or famine mentality of,
00:49this is what I'm going to do and I'm not going to change in fight or not?
00:52So I've always changed, as these guys start off, we've got the circle,
00:58Ooh, nice solid leg kick, change levels to a double leg, turns, cuts the corner, gets him right here.
01:05Josh Hickman slowing this fight down.
01:08When I was a wrestler, that's what you want to do, right?
01:10Somebody starts to obviously show that they're a little bit better than you up top with the ground,
01:14or the stand game, take them to the ground, even that out, right?
01:18Yeah, well, you want to just change that momentum.
01:21Especially early on, you know, this is his debut fight here for Mr. Hickman, and, you know,
01:28ate a big shot early, and now he's changing the pace up, calming himself down,
01:32and putting it to a place where he feels like he has more control.
01:34Yeah, pretty man came out, guns blazing, looking to land a big shot early,
01:39and Hickman went ahead and said, you know what?
01:42I'm going to just change my levels, let you run into my takedown, take you down.
01:45Now he's on top end mount in a great position, and you see he's not really doing a lot of damage,
01:49but he is securing the position.
01:51He's not overdoing it.
01:53He's taking his time.
01:54He knows he has time to work, and if you look at pretty man on the bottom, he's just squirming.
01:58And Justin can attest to this.
02:01He's wasting energy.
02:02He's doing nothing.
02:02You can tell he's not versed in jiu-jitsu because he is not getting hands on the hips.
02:07He's not shrimping out.
02:08He's not trying to do anything that you're supposed to.
02:11He's just holding him down and then bucking his hips for no reason.
02:14Right.
02:14There's no building of frames here.
02:16He's just kind of picking his hips up and hoping that he might tip him over here.
02:21But good knee pressure there by Hickman to stay on top.
02:26You know, I think about things like if you're in control, you're on top of somebody,
02:29simply just wearing them down so that way later on you can figure out what the finish would be,
02:34whether it's on the grounder or with the stand-up.
02:36Yeah, absolutely.
02:37It's way easier to control someone than it is to try and get someone off of you.
02:42Right now we are in the middle of round one, just a little over a buck left in it,
02:48and some good blows right here from up top right now.
02:53Hickman's got some ground and pound.
02:54If he doesn't defend himself, the ref will stop this fight.
02:57That guy gave up his back.
02:58Hick, worst thing you could do here.
03:01He's got that choke in.
03:02No fighting in the hands.
03:03There it is.
03:04It could be over quick, and he's holding on for dear life.
03:08He's thinking about it, and that is it, folks.
03:10On the ground, he finishes it off.
03:13And what a performance by the young man right now.
03:18My goodness.
03:19John Hickman looks like he's about to punch through the cage.
03:22Pure aggression.
03:23And in addition, he's got a really great mustache.
03:34I mean, let's face it, that is an incredible stache.
03:37It breeds power.
03:45Deion Sanders always said, you look good, you feel good.
03:48You feel good, you play good, and if you play good, you're glad.
03:51He gave up his back.
03:52I think that paid off.
03:53The worst thing you could do here.
03:54Absolutely.
03:55He's got that choke in.
03:56Dominant performance.
03:57There it is.
03:58It could be over quick, and he's holding on for dear life.
04:02He's thinking about it, and that is it, folks.
04:03Ladies and gentlemen, at two minutes and 16 seconds in round one,
04:11our winner with a rear neck and choke hold out of the right corner,
04:17John, he needs a nickname, Hickman!
04:22I like the stache as a nickname.
04:24Yeah, well, what I was saying was Prettyman came out looking to try to land a couple solid shots.
04:30And Hickman may have changed his game plan up and said, you know what?
04:33I think I'm going to take this to the ground where he obviously dominated him.
04:36There was not even an ounce of defense coming up.
