I asked a cybersecurity expert what causes most data breaches. I expected a tech answer—what I got was a leadership lesson.
In this episode of The Mason Duchatschek Show, I interview Christian Espinosa, CEO of Blue Goat Cyber and author of The Smartest Person in the Room.
Christian explains that the biggest cybersecurity failures are not due to bad software or outdated firewalls—but to how people communicate, lead, and work together. It’s a wake-up call for executives who think tech alone will protect their company.
If you’re a business owner, HR executive, or leader responsible for protecting your people and data, this conversation is a must-watch.
Key Takeaways
✅ Most breaches stem from people problems, not tech flaws
✅ Ego and poor communication open the door to attacks
✅ Cybersecurity is a culture and clarity issue

Alchemy was the medieval forerunner of chemistry, based on the supposed transformation of matter. It was concerned with attempts to convert base metals (like lead) into gold. WORKFORCE ALCHEMY is kind of like that—except with people and businesses.

00:00People in general want to be significant, but in cybersecurity, people get their significance by being so-called smarter than other people, and their ego does what it can do to protect that identity, this I'm smarter than other people identity.
00:13And what that results in is people talking over your head, because if they talk over your head, you don't understand it, and therefore they must be smarter than you.
00:19It also results in a lack of collaboration amongst cybersecurity teams, because we're always looking for a reason to prove that we're smarter than somebody.
