00:00Let's go to Bert and Benicia.
00:02Hi, Bert.
00:02Thanks for calling Willie and Debbie.
00:05I'm feeling good, man.
00:07Let me check a few boxes for you, Mark.
00:09Number one, I'm very excited for some Warrior Playoff basketball.
00:12Anytime you get to watch the greatness that is Steph Curry is a treat.
00:17I got a seven-year-old son, took him to his first game this year.
00:20I want him to watch as much Steph Curry as he possibly can until he retires.
00:24Number two, give me the yin and yang of Steph and Jimmy,
00:28someone who is hungry, who is motivated,
00:31who complement each other as the duo in the West.
00:34Of course, I'm going to take Steph over anyone else.
00:38And number three, as our homie Lo Neal used to say,
00:41same church, same pew on J.K. and Kerr.
00:45It is not Kerr's job to motivate Jonathan.
00:48He's been here long enough.
00:49He's been around Steph, around Draymond.
00:52He should know the system.
00:53He should have the basketball IQ and acumen to know where he's supposed to be
00:58on the court, when he's supposed to be there, for defensive rotations.
01:03And offensively, he should at least know what is asked of me
01:07and how I can help the team.
01:09When you see Gary Payton, when you see Guy Santos,
01:13when you see Moses Moody, guys who we would say do have less talent
01:16but seem to have what's right there in the middle of their chest,
01:20have heart and are into it, that is what drives, I think,
01:24a fan crazy looking at Kuminga, who has the talent
01:27but just doesn't either have the heart, doesn't have the acumen
01:31to pick up the system and play within the system with the people who are there.
01:35There's just something there that there's no motor to him.
01:39I want to see, like Draymond said, an angry Kuminga come out
01:42and be a difference maker, even if it's just defensively.
01:45Because if you have him and Gary Payton and Draymond on the court together,
01:50you're going to have three guys that should be able to just shut people down.
01:56And I want to see that.
01:57As a fan, I want to see that.
01:59I could agree with you more.
02:00That's a low nihilism.
02:02Yeah.
02:02Thanks, Bert.
02:03Follow up with the same church, same peel.
02:04I actually don't.
02:05You know, the one thing that I, this slight adjustment on what Bert's saying
02:09from my perspective, I don't think this is that much about effort.
02:13I really don't.
02:14I don't think Jay, like sometimes when we're talking about this,
02:17it sounds to me like people think JK dogs it.
02:20I don't think this is about effort.
02:22I think it's about two things.
02:23Two things and two things only.
02:26I don't think Kuminga at age 22 is a great on-court decision maker yet.
02:33I don't think he is.
02:35And then the other thing that no one can argue,
02:37he's just not that good of a shooter.
02:39And on this team, if you're going to play that spot,
02:42you have to be able to knock down a three.
02:45And since he came back from his injury, he is six for 35 from three-point range.
02:51Can't have it.
02:52You can't have it right now.
02:53There's just no room for it in a must-win game.
02:56There may be room for it in the Houston series.
02:58I hope that there is.
02:59He's very athletic.
03:00They may need him in this matchup.
03:02And I would expect him to be ready because that's what a professional is asked to do.
03:06But I don't think it's an effort thing.
03:08I just don't think he makes great decisions and he doesn't knock down shots.
03:11Well, I don't know if effort is the word I would use.
03:13The word I would use is intangibles because if you look at the rotation,
03:16the starting lineup is now set with Moody and Pods and the big three.
03:20And then you get into your bench.
03:22And your bench is going to be GP2 for sure.
03:25It's going to be buddy buckets.
03:26Hope you're making them.
03:27If you are making them, you'll play more than 12 minutes.
03:30If you're not, well, you're going to get 12 minutes to ply your trade.
03:34And I do think that Quentin Post, the way he shoots, is now in that eight-man rotation.
03:39So now you get down to players nine and player ten.
03:43And if you have Kavon and Guy and Kaminga and you're looking for what?
03:48What are you looking for?
03:49You're looking for that je ne sais quoi from that player.
03:52You're looking for hustle plays, rebounding, pick setting, putbacks, defensive, acumen,
03:59and all the rest of it.
04:00And J.K.'s best attributes are I can score, I've got the ha-ha, I can rim run, I can elevate,
04:07I can defend.
04:08But these things are already boxes that are checked.
04:11And so when you get down to player eight, player nine, and player ten,
04:15and you're looking for those things, that's not what J.K. does best.
04:19And so that for me is what this is all about.
04:22It's not about the person, or the doghouse, or a grudge, or his development, or the rest of it.
04:28It's just about what you're looking for.
04:30And what you're looking for is like, it's kind of Guy Santos in a nutshell.
04:34Well, Guy Santos, I mean in a way, yeah, Guy Santos makes it so that you can go to him.
04:40Not even because it's like, if I said to you, what does Guy do well?
04:44Nobody's going to come up with a basketball thing.
04:46You're just going to say, well, he just goes crazy out there.
04:49He just goes crazy.
04:50But that leads to plays.
04:51Sometimes it leads to fouls.
04:53There are times where it leads to a turnover.
04:55But more often than not, what it leads to is,
04:57that guy's going to get me a loose ball.
04:59That guy's going to get me a rebound.
05:02That guy's going to create another shot for Steph Curry or Jimmy Butler.
05:08That guy's going to create another shot for Steph Curry or Jimmy Butler.
05:13And that's what this team is looking for this time of year.
05:16Look at their point.
05:18Look at the box score last night.
05:19They scored 75 of the 121 points.
05:22Like, that's it.
05:24That's all this team wants.
05:25More shots for Jimmy Butler and Steph Curry.
05:29Draymond shot one last night, told the story of how Steph kindly walked over to him and said,
05:33how about not do that right now?
05:34Because I'm Steph Curry.
05:35Let's have me shoot.
05:37And then he shot twice.
05:38And then the Warriors moved on to the playoffs.
05:40Right.
05:41Like, that's...
05:41And I was looking at the play-by-play.
05:42That's all there's room for right now.
05:44And the one that he's talking about was with about 7.30 to go.
05:49Because Draymond shot two threes in the fourth quarter.
05:51The second one he shot was with one second on the shot clock.
05:54And that couldn't have been the one.
05:55Right.
05:56But I'm looking at the one where they're down one.
05:59Jaron Jackson Jr. hit that three.
06:01Memphis took its final lead of the game.
06:03And Curry misses.
06:05And then Memphis misses.
06:06And next trip down with about 12 on the shot clock, Draymond gets it in the corner.
06:10And it's an open three.
06:11Oh, yeah.
06:12It wasn't a...
06:12In February, it's a good three.
06:13Absolutely.
06:14It's a great February three.
06:16It's April 15th.
06:18He shoots it.
06:19He misses it.
06:20And then, you know, you get it back.
06:21And there's a foul.
06:22Butler free throws, whatever.
06:23And then Steph eventually hits another three shortly thereafter.
06:26But that's the three that I think Steph was talking about.
06:28Like, yo, dog.
06:29I think you're right because it also, that to me was as nerve-wracking of a moment as the game held.
06:35Which is Memphis has the lead and the ball.
06:38Oh, crap.
06:39Right.
06:40If they go up by four, and how much time did you say was left?
06:43When Draymond shot that three, it was 7.41 to go.
06:47No, no, no, no, no.
06:47We're not doing two score leads as we move toward the six or seven minute mark left to go in the season.
06:54No.
06:55We're not doing that.
06:56Thank God they got a defensive stop.
06:58And that's when, every time stuff like that happens, that's when you can tell Jimmy's like,
07:03we're going to get you a foul.
07:04We're going to get a foul right now.
07:05Yep.
07:06That's about enough of that.
07:07We're going to get to the free throw.
07:08That's right.
07:09That's what he's so good at.
07:10Yeah.
07:10Every time the Warriors are like, dude, please, please score.
07:14Jimmy's just like, watch this.
07:15I'm going to get somebody to slap my arm.
07:17Or not.
07:18Yep.
07:18And I'm going to go to the line, and we're going to get a couple here.
07:20And the thing that preceded the Draymond three that made me a little nervous is Limpy McLimperson, who...
07:28Ja Morant.
07:28And he was really hurt.
07:30Oh, yeah.
07:30That was a legitimate...
07:31That ankle turned.
07:33I'm so glad that they went to the monitor and saw that it was Ja, because Ja splayed his legs out into Buddy Heald.
07:40Buddy didn't stagger into him.
07:42And so that was not a flagrant, and they rightly did not call it as such.
07:46Still called it a foul, though.
07:47Right.
07:47Still went to the line.
07:48And I think that the foul was not on the fact that he landed on his foot.
07:52Yeah, I don't know when it was.
07:53You're probably right.
07:54All I know is the ankle was really bad, and then he comes in, and it's like, oh, look at Ja.
07:58He's back.
07:58And then immediately, whoop, step back, 15-footer, and I'm like, oh, no, not this guy.
08:03Well, that play made me so mad.
08:05That play made me so mad, because I'm like, look, I think as they got into the fourth, Ja was able to still drive a little bit.
08:12But in that moment, he wasn't.
08:15He wasn't.
08:15And I'm like, why are you sagging off of Ja?
08:19He can't go by you.
08:21He can't walk.
08:23And they let him shoot an outside jumper.
08:25That was Clinton, yep.
08:26I'm like, get in his face.
08:28Get in the face.
08:29Posting that drop coverage.
08:30He's trying to sag back a little bit.
08:32Clinton is a ton of fun.
08:33And sometimes on defense, I'm like, you're new here, aren't you?
08:37You're new.
08:38And he is.
08:39Kumar in Ukiah.
08:41Hi, Kumar.
08:41What's up?
08:42Hey, guys.
08:44I just wanted to, when you were talking about, you know, digging your toes into the carpet at the hotel room, a sense of relief today.
08:53I just wanted to mention, as a tax preparer who is also a Warriors fan, yesterday being tax day, today is probably the most relieved I've ever felt in my life.
09:05So I share that with you times 100.
09:08Love the show.
09:09Keep it going.
09:10Let's go, Warriors.
09:11Kumar, thanks.
09:12And you did it.
09:12What are the extensions, Kumar, you had to file?
09:14Exactly.
09:15Kumar.
09:15Kumar's like, we're done.
09:17And half of America's like, we're just getting started.
09:20Exactly.
09:20Nobody does anything on time ever, ever, anymore, ever.
09:24Nothing.
09:25Well.
09:25Nothing.
09:25And shout out to my wife.
09:27We've already gotten our refund.
09:29Look at you.
09:30Because she insists.
09:31I'm a classic April 15th guy.
09:34I'm like an April 1st-er.
09:35April 15th, 1999.
09:37I was playing adult league basketball, and I tore my ACL, and I hadn't yet filed, and so that was an extension year.
09:44Yeah, that works.
09:45Yeah.
09:45That works.
09:46I had to pay some late fees that year.
09:47Most extensions, though, come from the fact that this is, I think the human brain always thinks you're about to be rich soon.
09:56I just think that's the way people's brains think.
09:59You know what?
10:00I know that I can't pay this now, but August.
10:06Oh, baby.
10:08I'm going to have all kinds of dough in August.
10:12And then August gets here.
10:14And you're like, hmm.
10:16So I used to owe 1,000.
10:18Now I owe 1180.
10:20One triple eight tax deal.
10:22Payment plan?
10:23Call my guy.
10:23Yeah.
10:24Anyway.
10:24Call Mosky.
10:25Happy tax day.
10:26I hope it went well for everybody.
10:28Let's do, let's go to Rich in Fremont.
10:31Hi, Rich.
10:33Hey, what's up, fellas?
10:35Thanks for taking my call.
10:36Hey, listen, this is just really a feeling today.
10:41Hats off to Steve Kerr and the coaching staff and also them Golden State Warriors.
10:46They pulled it out and they pulled it out when they needed to pull it out.
10:49And we are no longer in the play-in.
10:52We are in the playoffs, baby.
10:54Let's go.
10:54I'm loving this.
10:56They got it done.
10:57Doesn't matter how.
10:58Doesn't matter when.
10:59What matters is that they got it done.
11:00So, no negativity.
11:02Accentuate the positive.
11:04They got the W.
11:05Let's go, Warriors.
11:07Let's make a run.
11:08Yeah, Rich.
11:09I love it.
11:10I hope that everybody did take a moment.
11:12I did today.
11:13And just look back.
11:14Like, look back at where we were from the 12-3 start to then going through a period of
11:21many weeks where they just were not a very good basketball team.
11:25And then the angst over who they were going to trade for.
11:28And Kevin Durant.
11:29Remember the guy?
11:30I remember we were sitting right next to each other when Shams comes out and is like,
11:33turns out Kevin Durant hates Golden State.
11:36Oh, God.
11:36He's not coming.
11:38And everyone's like, oh, my God.
11:39They're going to get no one.
11:41And it felt like Steph's career was slipping through everyone's fingers.
11:45And you were 25 and 25 or whatever the hell they were at that moment.
11:49And then the Butler trade.
11:51And that had its own set of opinions.
11:53Mine was not perfect by any stretch.
11:56None of ours was.
11:56Yeah, not thrilled.
11:58Did not think that was the perfect move.
12:00And boy, was I wrong.
12:01And then all of a sudden, he shows up.
12:03And then I'll never forget the first half at Chicago.
12:07And you're like, this is the Jimmy Butler Warriors?
12:09They stink.
12:10I hate this even more now.
12:11And then he put his cape on at halftime against Chicago.
12:15And they've lost single-digit games since then.
12:17And at that moment, any one of us would have honestly taken any playoff spot,
12:24especially any playoff spot that's not number eight.
12:28Because everyone knew all year that Oklahoma City was so powerful.
12:31You just wanted to be in the rest of the group.
12:33Was it perfect?
12:34No.
12:35Was last night scary?
12:36Yes.
12:37But are we here?
12:38Yeah, man.
12:39They did it.
12:40They did it.
12:41So now I'll never forget Steve Kerr's comment.
12:44Man, we've got to give Steph that at bat.
12:47Well, step to the plate.
12:50Yep.
12:51You did it.
12:52You did it.
12:52And you're the second seven seed in 30 years to be favored over the two seed in the first round.
12:59The last team to do it, the Lakers in 2021, they lost the series.
13:04Did they?
13:05Four games to two.
13:06Oh, listen.
13:06I'm doing a deep dive on seven and eight seeds who win in the first round.
13:10I'll have that for you at some point.
13:12And we can talk about throughout the rest of the week.
13:15The likelihood is not very likely that a seven or an eight wins.
13:19But the ones that do win, it's an interesting matchup.
13:22It's an interesting case.
13:23The last one to do it was Jimmy Buckets.
13:26Oh, God.
13:27As an eight over Milwaukee.
13:29Of course.
13:29They won that series in five.
13:30In five games.
13:31In five.
13:32They dominated.
13:32It happens, but it doesn't happen that often.
13:35No, listen.
13:37If I'm going to be an objective observer, and I'm not because I'm a Warrior fan, but I would
13:42You can try.
13:43I would think that if a gambler were looking for value going into any NBA series that's
13:51about to start, you would put your dough on the Rockets.
13:54To get a two seed and get juice, that much juice in your favor?
13:59Yep.
13:59That's pretty rare.
14:00It is.
14:01And the other interesting one is Clippers in Denver, because I believe that Denver opened
14:05as the favorite, and it flipped to the Clippers.
14:08100%.
14:09Yeah.
14:09And like I said, I remember Sunday night, Ephraim and I had a big conversation about it
14:14on Fox.
14:15I was like, dude, I completely expect the Clippers to win that series.
14:20And I now wish that I jumped on that number right when it came out.
14:23Yeah, I jumped on it.
14:24Yeah, the Clippers.
14:25Good for you.
14:26What'd you get it at?
14:27Like plus 130.
14:29Yeah, congratulations.
14:29It was not a huge number, but now it's minus 125 or so, right?
14:32Yeah.
14:33I just think they're a better team.
14:35Like end of analysis.
14:37They're better.
14:38They're just better than Denver.
14:40Jokic is a problem, but dude, the Clippers are so, like, they've got legit experienced
14:46experienced playoff performers, and they're just a better basketball team.
14:50I don't think it's close.
14:51I think it's close.
14:53For me, the big variable is Kawhi Leonard and him being available to play.
14:58I mean, because he does get injured, but the way he's playing, and you add in Harden and
15:04Zubats, I do think that the Clippers are a team matchup-wise.
15:07They match up very well with the Denver Nuggets.
15:10Yeah, Zubats and Jokic.
15:12That's a lot of huge white men right there in the middle of that series.
15:15Yep.
15:16So give Warriors just a brief glimpse of hope.
15:19Just two years ago, the Lakers as a seven, Miami as an eight.
15:22They both made the conference finals.
15:24Crazy.
15:25Crazy.
15:26Unheard of, actually.
15:27Yeah.
15:29Do it.
15:30Yeah, let's do it.
15:30All right.
15:31Come on.
15:31Morgan in Morgan Hill.
15:35What's up?
15:37Hey, guys.
15:38Thanks for taking my call.
15:39I'm just so excited to leave after that game last night, and I have just a few comments.
15:45One, you know, the more I see Jimmy Butler, the more and more respect I get for him as
15:51a player every single game.
15:52It's hard to kind of get a sense of a player when you don't see him day in and day out.
15:56But now that we see Jimmy Butler every game since he's been here, I mean, the poise, the
16:03calmness, composure with the ball, his ability to sense the moments in the games when he should
16:08make the right pass or be aggressive.
16:12You know, and when he talks to the ref, he's never demonstrative, and he's always in control.
16:18I just gained so much respect for him.
16:19And, you know, I was thinking about that game, you know, the Warriors, they really know how
16:25to make it a nail-biter with all the clutch games, and I was thinking about those two fouls
16:31that the refs called, the one against Pods when he had that block, and then the one against
16:35Looney late.
16:36And I was thinking about another fallacy of the brain, you know, Willard, you mentioned,
16:41you know, people think they're going to get rich.
16:42Well, another fallacy of the brain is, you know, when you think you see something that's
16:46supposed to be something, your brain fills in the rest.
16:49So, like, an analogy is when, you know, like, you see a word, but the letters in the middle
16:55of the word are mixed up a little bit, but your brain pieces it together to know the right
16:59word.
16:59I feel like that's what happens when refs see certain plays, and it's just something that's
17:05unfixable.
17:06But anyhow, really looking forward to this Rocket series.
17:11Can't wait to see.
17:12Yep.
17:13Morgan, great call.
17:14And I agree with him.
17:15And you and I both agreed on this, I think.
17:17If Draymond Green blocks that shot, it's not called.
17:20Yeah.
17:20But it's pods.
17:22It's star bias.
17:23Yeah.
17:23And we know this in the league.
17:25Yeah.
17:25And that's why we wanted to avoid the Lakers and Luka and LeBron, because Houston's not
17:30going to get that same star bias whistle.
