00:01It just sounds like something bad is happening to her.
00:04I heard her scream, no, stop it.
00:07I heard some gunshot.
00:08Drop it, whatever it is, drop it!
00:11That does not prove that I killed my wife.
00:14We know what happened because the video tells us what happened.
00:17The camera doesn't lie.
00:20This time, on Killers Caught on Camera.
00:24In California, a young boy goes missing while in the custody of his father.
00:30And her interaction is really sad because this is the last time she's going to see him.
00:34And in the UK...
00:36A garden security camera captures the moment before a brutal murder.
00:46We can see an individual crutching down.
00:49He's got linear form. Could be a weapon.
00:52One of the neighbours heard screaming coming from next door.
00:55A man shouting, die, die.
01:00in the UK's music scene.
01:03A woman shouting, die, die by Revon.
01:05They must have caste and devastate.
01:06Don't батyn, die.
01:08You're right.
01:10We are here to go.
01:14Los Angeles, California.
01:19Home to Ar bananas and dress Ian Jr.,
01:22a five-year-old boy known affectionately as teach real
01:26His father is RMS Andresian Sr.
01:30His mother, Ana Estevez.
01:34Ana had wanted a child all along.
01:38She had gone through medical procedures to try and conceive,
01:43and Piki was her pride and joy.
01:50He was everything to her.
01:53He was her only child.
01:57She had a difficult time with pregnancies, and this was her baby.
02:03Ana speaks about his love for cooking, baking in particular.
02:08She was such a happy child, had a great childhood, loved to learn.
02:12And if you know Ana, you know that Ana was a principal at an elementary school.
02:17So education is a big part of her life,
02:21and she wanted to instill that in Piki as well.
02:24After eight years of marriage, things turned sour, and Ana filed for divorce.
02:32Louis Aguilera is a homicide detective for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
02:38We learned that the divorce proceedings were quite contentious,
02:42that both parties were making allegations against each other,
02:45and it was a smear campaign, basically, on both sides.
02:52Piki's parents, Ana and Aramaz, became embroiled in a bitter custody battle.
02:58Ana was concerned about how Aramaz Sr. treated Piki.
03:02She claimed he was aggressive and yelled in their son's face.
03:06Despite these allegations, the court ordered joint custody
03:11and granted each parent seven consecutive days with their child
03:15on the condition that they handed Piki over on neutral turf.
03:21So the initial order for visitation allowed Piki's father to take him for an entire week.
03:28And so Ana dropped off Piki at the police station,
03:32made sure that his father took custody of him.
03:35Aramaz Sr. was planning to take Piki to Disneyland.
03:40So this video was given to us by Ana,
03:44and this was taken from her cell phone that she mounted on her dashboard
03:48to document the custody exchange.
03:53Ana was so concerned about Piki's father's behavior
03:57that she decided to record all of their exchanges on camera.
04:01What's unusual to us is you see when she's hugging Piki and saying her goodbyes to him.
04:11Aura's pacing in the background.
04:13Seems fidgety and nervous and just weird the way he's acting.
04:17And you see the affection they have for each other.
04:21And then look at him in the background.
04:23At this point, Piki's whispering in her ear and talking to her.
04:27He gives her a kiss.
04:28You'll see him caress her hair.
04:30He whispered to her, I don't want to go with him.
04:31I want to stay with you.
04:32Piki's body language with his father is in complete contrast.
04:41His body and legs arching away.
04:44Seven days later, on Saturday, the 22nd of April, 2017,
04:50Aramaz Sr. and Piki failed to turn up
04:53at the prearranged drop-off point in San Marino.
04:56Anna is in San Marino waiting for Aura to return Piki.
05:04She finally contacts San Marino Police Department at 10 a.m.
05:09and says, hey, my son was supposed to be here a couple of hours ago.
05:14And my ex-husband isn't answering his phone.
05:17He's not returning text messages.
05:20He's a couple hours late.
05:21And he's violating the order.
05:26Here's his license plate.
05:28They research it on their computer
05:30and they see that his car had been towed
05:32by South Pasadena Police earlier that morning.
05:37Craig Hum is head of the Major Crimes Division
05:40in the L.A. County District Attorney's Office.
05:43Well, the Piki Andresen case first came to my desk
05:47a couple of days after Piki disappeared.
05:51So we were involved pretty much from the beginning.
05:53Piki's dad, Aramaz Sr.,
05:55had been found on the morning of Saturday, the 22nd of April.
05:59He was lying on the ground, unconscious, in Arroyo Seco Park.
06:05His father was found in a disheveled condition.
06:09He claimed he didn't know what happened to Piki.
06:11The jogger happened to see him at 6.30 in the morning and she called the police.
06:19So when South Pasadena police officers arrived that morning,
06:22they found him passed out.
06:23You see Aura's car.
06:28Aura was about 30 feet behind the car on a horse trail.
06:32So they transported him to the hospital, not thinking anything of a missing child.
06:38They talked to him further in the hospital and he does say that,
06:42I think I was assaulted, I'm going through a divorce,
06:46and I think my ex-wife might have had something to do with it.
06:51That's all he says.
06:52He makes no mention of his child at all.
06:55So South Pasadena police just tow his car.
07:00They leave him at the hospital, not thinking anything of it.
07:05Piki's father claimed that he didn't know what had happened to Piki,
07:09and so the police treated it as perhaps some kind of abduction,
07:12or that perhaps Piki had just wandered away when his father was unconscious.
07:17And so initially they treated it as potentially a missing persons case.
07:21When you have a missing person case,
07:25the first thing you want to do is contact the relatives of that missing person
07:28to get the dynamics of the family relationship.
07:31So we did a background investigation on the father right away.
07:34He had never been arrested.
07:37He had a bachelor's degree from one of the local universities.
07:41He had never even been cited for a moving violation or a parking violation,
07:45so he had a clear record.
07:47Reading into his background, it didn't lead me to any clues.
07:50It didn't make me think any different other than this child's missing.
07:58Most missing children cases are resolved very quickly,
08:01and children also, when they go missing, usually run away from home,
08:05and either they come back or they're found.
08:07It's usually an innocent situation that people get very worried about very quickly,
08:11understandably, and the police take very seriously.
08:13But, of course, in this case, there was this other factor,
08:17which was the father and the lack of trust in the father
08:20and worry about what he might do with the child.
08:22Piki was supposed to be in Aramaz's care.
08:31Based on the fact that he had custody of his child,
08:35he didn't know the whereabouts of his child,
08:37South Pasadena arrested him for child endangerment.
08:40He was deemed to be under the influence of drugs, opioids,
08:45and they arrested him for that as well.
08:52After his arrest, police questioned Piki's father.
08:54Our main goal, more than anything in here, is to find your son.
09:00And if you can give us any information to help us find him,
09:04that's what we're trying to do.
09:07He stuck to the story.
09:09I think I was assaulted.
09:10I'm having this horrible divorce with my ex-wife.
09:14She might have had something to do with it.
09:17I've always wanted to 50-50 find.
09:20From the beginning, I was wanted always so custody.
09:24You know, it's been tough, you know,
09:26because, you know, all I just want is
09:28what is in the best interest of Aramaz, 50-50.
09:32And that's why, and it's like,
09:35more and more, it's just a continuous battle.
09:40He continued to tell that story all morning.
09:43But Aramaz still couldn't tell the police where Piki was.
09:48No one was with your son except you.
09:50Did you give him to somebody else?
09:52I did not.
09:55Aramaz Sr.'s physical appearance also raised suspicion.
10:00I noticed on his hands he had abrasions
10:02on the palms of his hands.
10:05So you don't know how all that dirt got?
10:06I do not know any of this.
10:09You don't remember digging?
10:10I don't remember anything.
10:12You don't remember digging around?
10:13And it's not dirt.
10:15You don't remember?
10:17Did you have car problems or anything?
10:18I did not.
10:20Is that grease or you don't know?
10:21It's not grease.
10:23I mean, I would love it if you guys take a sample.
10:25So you don't remember?
10:28I don't remember anything outside.
10:29You remember the fire department coming from you?
10:33No.
10:33We had his hands photographed as well.
10:38And in the bedding of his fingernails,
10:40they were covered with dirt.
10:42And the photos were quite significant
10:43because of the abrasions that he had
10:45on the palms of his hands
10:47and some blistering as well.
10:52The contents of Aramaz's recovered car
10:55began to paint a worrying picture.
10:57There was a sonogram of Peaky
11:02that was propped up on the dashboard.
11:05There was also a full gas can.
11:07And the car had been doused in gasoline on the inside.
11:12And a rag was stuck in the gas cap.
11:16It looked like it was an apparent attempt
11:20to light the car on fire.
11:22It's the LED lantern that stood out to me
11:27that was still lit.
11:29There's the sippy cup that we took as evidence
11:32and the jacket that had vomit on it as well.
11:37The police questioned Aramaz again
11:40to establish a timeline of events.
11:42From the moment he picked up Peaky
11:45to seven days later
11:46when he was found lying in Arroyo Seco Park.
11:50We wanted to get a statement from him
11:54and lock him into a story.
11:58Okay, what did you do this past Thursday?
12:00We went to Disneyland.
12:02I sent investigators out
12:04to follow up on that timeline.
12:07But before we did that,
12:09we made the decision to release him from custody.
12:12We didn't feel like a child endangerment case was strong
12:15and he was more viable to us
12:18to be out of custody
12:19and maybe help us
12:22with this investigation
12:24and locating this child.
12:28Plus, we wanted to keep eyes on him.
12:32The police tracked Aramaz's every move
12:36and started to compare his testimony
12:38with the recordings.
12:40The cameras and video evidence
12:44were critical in this case.
12:45They set a timeline for us.
12:48The first video was from Anna's dash cam
12:51on Saturday, the 15th of April, 2017.
12:55Five days later,
12:57Aramaz was captured
12:58on his own home surveillance camera.
13:00We served a search warrant
13:05at Arra's house
13:07and we located video
13:09from the house
13:10of him leaving on Thursday afternoon
13:12prior to going to Disneyland.
13:14We saw that he walked out of his house
13:17to his car
13:18with a large blue duffel bag
13:20and he also had a large gas container
13:23in his hand.
13:25Neither one of those items
13:26have ever been recovered to this day.
13:28We conducted DNA tests
13:32of the bathrooms
13:33and didn't locate any evidence
13:36of any crime in the house
13:38but we did take a hard drive.
13:40We discovered that
13:41the week he had his son,
13:43he created a will online
13:44and in that will,
13:46he left everything to his mother
13:48and he left everything to his sister
13:51including $100,000 in cash.
13:53He left nothing to his son
13:55which told us a lot.
13:59The next time Peaky
14:01and his father were filmed
14:02was at Disneyland.
14:06These were taken
14:07from the entrance at Disneyland
14:09and you could see Arra
14:11pick Peaky up
14:12and carry him
14:14through the turnstiles.
14:15We found a video
14:16from Disneyland
14:17that we were able to locate.
14:20He was seen
14:21leaving Disneyland
14:22at about 1 a.m.
14:24Peaky and Arra
14:27are next seen
14:28at an Arco
14:29a.m. p.m. gas station
14:31in Monterey Park
14:32and that's about
14:342 o'clock in the morning
14:35on Friday.
14:42Six hours later,
14:44Aramaz appeared
14:44on a camera
14:45over 120 miles away
14:48at Lake Kachuma,
14:49an artificial reservoir
14:51in Santa Barbara County.
14:52There's a booth
14:55at the entrance
14:56where people pay
14:58to get into
14:58the parking lot.
15:00That was extremely useful
15:01because from that video
15:03we could tell
15:04that Peaky
15:05wasn't in the car.
15:08There's a child seat
15:09in the back of the car
15:10and that would be
15:12where Peaky
15:12would normally be seated
15:13and the car seat
15:14was empty.
15:16The fact that Peaky
15:18couldn't be seen
15:18in the car
15:19told us
15:20that something
15:21had happened
15:21to Peaky
15:22between the time
15:23that he had
15:24left Disneyland
15:25with his father
15:26and the time
15:27that Peaky's father
15:28arrived at Lake Kachuma.
15:33Aramaz Sr.
15:35stayed at Lake Kachuma
15:36and made several visits
15:37to the local store
15:38which were caught
15:39on camera.
15:43So in this first
15:44still photo
15:45you see Ara
15:47arriving
15:48into the convenience store.
15:49he buys some items
15:51and which was
15:52a concern to us
15:53was that there
15:54was no Peaky.
15:56You see him
15:57leaving
15:57with no Peaky
15:58and then he
16:01enters the store
16:01a second time
16:02buys more
16:03miscellaneous items
16:04and there's
16:06no Peaky again.
16:09Police checked
16:10every piece
16:11of video footage
16:12against Aramaz's testimony.
16:14What they found
16:15was strong enough
16:16to warrant a search.
16:17Teams on horseback
16:19with tracking dogs
16:20combed 30 square miles
16:22around Lake Kachuma.
16:26Helicopters
16:27examined the area
16:28from above.
16:29Divers
16:30went into the water
16:31but there was
16:32no trace
16:33of Peaky.
16:34Meanwhile
16:35400 miles away
16:36in Las Vegas
16:37Aramaz Sr.
16:39was becoming
16:39a cause
16:40for concern.
16:42His father
16:42refused to cooperate
16:44with the police
16:44any further
16:45refused to talk
16:46with them, refused
16:46to tell them
16:47anything at all.
16:48So the police
16:49put Peaky's father
16:50under physical
16:51surveillance
16:51and they also
16:53worked with us
16:53to obtain a wiretap
16:54so that we could
16:55monitor any phone calls
16:58that Peaky's father
16:59was making
17:00to see if we could
17:00get any information
17:01from that.
17:02From the physical
17:03surveillance of Peaky's
17:04father,
17:04from the phone calls,
17:06it was clear that
17:07he had no interest
17:08in looking for his son.
17:10There was no
17:11even attempt
17:13to appear concerned
17:14about his son's
17:16well-being
17:16and that was
17:17in direct contrast
17:18with Peaky's mother,
17:19Anna,
17:20who was still frantically
17:21trying to find her son,
17:22still going to the media,
17:25asking for anybody's help
17:26in finding her son.
17:30Over the couple months
17:31that Peaky was missing,
17:33Ara not at one point
17:34called us,
17:35asked us how our
17:36investigation was going on.
17:37He never took part
17:38in the searches for Peaky.
17:41He never questioned
17:42anything,
17:43never spoke with Anna.
17:45Video footage obtained
17:47during the investigation
17:48showed Aramaz acting
17:50erratically.
17:52Ara was in Las Vegas
17:53going from casino
17:55to casino,
17:56hotel to hotel,
17:58having a good time.
17:59He was using
18:00a lot of narcotics.
18:02He was meeting
18:03women in hotels.
18:06He was skydiving.
18:08Welcome to
18:09Skydive Las Vegas.
18:10How you doing?
18:11Awesome, awesome.
18:12Obviously,
18:13you're feeling
18:13extra stupid today.
18:15No, no.
18:16So I must throw you
18:17out of a plane
18:17because of that.
18:19Prior to him
18:20jumping out
18:20of the plane,
18:22he mentions,
18:24I love you, buddy.
18:25All right, man.
18:26There's your last chance
18:27to back out.
18:27No, no, no, no.
18:28I love you, buddy.
18:30That's what he referred
18:31to Peaky as.
18:33I'm ready to go.
18:34Whatever.
18:35Let's do it.
18:36Let's do it.
18:36And he jumps
18:38out of the plane.
18:47So he's off
18:48having a good time,
18:50not a care in the world.
18:51His behavior
18:58just became
18:58more and more
19:00inconsistent
19:01with that
19:01of a grieving father.
19:03And it almost
19:04seemed like
19:04this was kind
19:05of his last hurrah
19:07because he knew
19:09that at some point
19:10in time,
19:11this was all
19:11going to catch up
19:12with him.
19:13Woo!
19:14Woo!
19:14Nothing like it, man.
19:16Go ahead, buddy.
19:16Going to Vegas
19:27and gambling
19:29and skydiving
19:30and engaging
19:30in just a series
19:32of high-risk behaviors
19:33is not a normal reaction
19:34to your child
19:35going missing.
19:36It is, however,
19:37a normal reaction
19:38to having nothing
19:40left to lose.
19:40And as time
19:46went on,
19:47Aramaz's behavior
19:48became even
19:49more bizarre.
19:51Ara is now
19:52changing his appearance
19:53and he's starting
19:54to mention
19:55to friends
19:56that he might
19:59leave the country.
20:00And he's starting
20:01to research
20:02countries
20:02that don't extradite.
20:04And that
20:05became a concern
20:06to us
20:06because now
20:08we're thinking
20:08he's going to flee
20:09and we'll never
20:10see him again.
20:12Police couldn't risk
20:14Aramaz slipping
20:15their net.
20:16He was arrested
20:17on a no-body
20:18murder charge
20:19and taken back
20:20to L.A. County.
20:22Detectives
20:22couldn't have predicted
20:24what happened next.
20:27I want to tell you
20:28exactly what happened
20:29and I'm begging
20:31for mercy.
20:32I've done enough
20:33damage.
20:34I looked at him
20:35I took off
20:36my necklace
20:37the one of my father
20:39and the cross
20:40I put on him
20:43I put the
20:45I put the jacket
20:46over
20:47and he kept on
20:50struggling
20:50I just remember
20:51and I kept on saying
20:53buddy please don't struggle
20:55I just said
20:57buddy please don't struggle
20:58and he kept on
21:01struggling
21:01and he
21:02and then he said
21:19he took his son
21:21down a hillside
21:23and that's why you have
21:25where he slipped and fell
21:26that's why you have
21:28his nails
21:30covered in dirt
21:31and he said
21:33he sat his son
21:35along the side
21:35of a tree
21:36didn't bury him
21:38so to him
21:46it was more honorable
21:47in his head
21:48that he didn't bury
21:50his son
21:51and he placed him
21:51up against a tree
21:52the fact that he gave
21:56so much detail
21:57about what he did
21:59during the commission
22:00of this crime
22:00to me
22:02just shows that it was
22:03almost certainly
22:04what sometimes called
22:05like a flashbulb memory
22:06so he
22:07probably
22:08has thought repeatedly
22:09about this incident
22:10it's
22:11basically traumatized him
22:13whether he was doing this
22:14out of catharsis
22:15so to feel better
22:16or to make sure
22:18that the police
22:18have the whole story
22:19this was a highly stressful
22:21highly emotional event
22:22that was strongly preserved
22:24in his memory
22:24and he is now
22:25getting it out of his mind
22:27on the 30th of June
22:342017
22:3471 days
22:36after Piki
22:37was reported missing
22:38police officers
22:40finally
22:41found
22:41Piki's body
22:42based on the description
22:44that
22:45Piki's father
22:46gave to the police
22:47they were able
22:48to
22:48find the location
22:50and they were able
22:51to locate
22:52Piki's body
22:52which was
22:54not that far
22:55off of the
22:56parking lot area
22:56propped against a tree
22:58just like his father
22:59had said
22:59and Piki's body
23:01was dressed
23:01in the pajamas
23:03that his father
23:04had described
23:05at the time
23:07that he confessed
23:07what we wanted to do
23:10was bring that child
23:11some dignity
23:12that his father
23:13didn't
23:14and we placed him
23:16in a helicopter
23:16with one of our detectives
23:19and flew him back
23:20to LA
23:21with that detective
23:22Aramaz Andresian Sr.
23:25was charged
23:26with first degree murder
23:28initially
23:29he maintained
23:30his innocence
23:31but he changed
23:32his mind
23:33and decided
23:34to plead guilty
23:35in court
23:35on the 1st of August
23:362017
23:37at this time
23:40my client
23:41wishes to change
23:41please
23:42from not guilty
23:43to guilty
23:43if you are ever
23:45released from prison
23:46you will be on parole
23:47for the rest of your life
23:48you understand
23:49these are the consequences
23:50that I've just explained
23:51to you sir
23:51he pled guilty
23:54because he didn't want
23:56to go through
23:56court proceedings
23:57that were going to show
23:59what a bad person
24:00he was
24:01he made it seem
24:02as though he pled guilty
24:03to help Anna
24:05to help the rest
24:06of the family
24:07but in his narcissistic way
24:10he knew
24:11everything he had done
24:13after murdering
24:15that child
24:15including all his
24:16Vegas trips
24:17and the partying
24:18and the drugs
24:18and the women
24:19were going to come out
24:20in court
24:20and he didn't want
24:22any part of that
24:23detectives believe
24:34Aramaz's motive
24:35was to hurt
24:36his ex-wife
24:37murdering their child
24:39as an ultimate
24:40act of revenge
24:42taking Piki to Disneyland
24:47is a really interesting
24:49facet of this case
24:50because it
24:51goes against the idea
24:52that he's dehumanizing
24:54his child
24:54because it sounds
24:55like he might be
24:57trying to give his child
24:57the best last days
24:58of his life
24:59in which case
25:00he's entirely seeing him
25:01as the child he actually is
25:02and yet he's then
25:04making the decision
25:05to then end his life
25:06so there's this discord
25:07going on
25:08between wanting the child
25:09to be happy
25:10and live a fulfilled life
25:11but then also taking
25:12that life away entirely
25:13in some way
25:14Disneyland is like
25:15a Vegas for children
25:15and it's having that
25:18reckless, fun, euphoria
25:21before death
25:23that maybe he was
25:24trying to offer his son
25:25that he perhaps
25:26was also trying to do
25:27to himself
25:28I think he did it
25:34because he wanted
25:35to hurt Anna
25:36and he knew
25:38the only way
25:38to hurt Anna
25:39was to take away
25:41the most important thing
25:42in her life
25:42and that was Piki
25:44this is the last time
25:47she's going to see him
25:48it's the last time
25:49she's going to be able
25:50to touch him
25:51Piki meant the world to her
25:55and he still does
25:58and he knew this
26:00and that was the ultimate pain
26:02he could cause
26:03was killing their child
26:05despite the successful prosecution
26:09there are still many
26:11unanswered questions
26:12around Aramaz's behavior
26:14did he mean
26:16to set that car on fire
26:17using that rag
26:19that was sticking
26:20out of the gas cap
26:21as an ignition point
26:23since the entire car
26:26was doused in gasoline
26:27did he want
26:28to commit suicide
26:29without the cameras
26:35Aramaz may never
26:36have been held accountable
26:37for Piki's murder
26:38cameras are one of the most
26:42important things
26:43to a homicide detective
26:45that exists
26:47they set a timeline
26:48for when the last time
26:50that Piki was seen alive
26:52which was the video
26:53from when he left
26:54Disneyland
26:54at about 1 o'clock
26:55in the morning
26:56later on that morning
26:58at around 8 or 9 o'clock
26:59in the morning
26:59Piki was no longer
27:01with his father
27:02in the car
27:02so it gave us a window
27:04of when Piki was killed
27:06it also gave us
27:08an indication
27:09of where the crime
27:10actually occurred
27:11Aramaz Andresian
27:15was comprehensively
27:17caught on camera
27:18he was given
27:20a sentence
27:20of 25 years
27:22to life
27:22in prison
27:23it really sticks
27:26with you
27:26the death of children
27:28and then
27:29the fact that
27:29a child is murdered
27:30by their parent
27:31is just something
27:32that never goes away
27:33and it never
27:34ceases to amaze me
27:36what people will do
27:38to their own children
27:39I've had over
27:41350
27:42homicide cases
27:45and this is the only
27:47funeral I've ever
27:48attended
27:49it was
27:50really somber
27:52I'll never forget it
27:53surveillance cameras
28:06were crucial
28:07in solving
28:08the Piki Andresian case
28:10all around the world
28:12CCTV
28:12has become
28:13almost omnipresent
28:15home surveillance
28:17and doorbell cameras
28:19in particular
28:19have become
28:20a global
28:21billion dollar industry
28:23in the UK
28:28the COVID pandemic
28:29and the increase
28:30in home deliveries
28:31created a huge demand
28:33for doorbell cameras
28:34the concept of a doorbell camera
28:37was for home security
28:38for that specific address
28:40for a property owner
28:42to be able to see
28:43who was approaching
28:44their front or rear
28:45of their property
28:46you could see
28:48if somebody was
28:49delivering parcels
28:50for example
28:51the recordings
28:53have also become
28:54an invaluable source
28:55of evidence
28:55for the police
28:56particularly
28:58in the murder
28:59of Stephen
28:59and Jennifer Chappell
29:00the investigation team
29:03will actively seek
29:04if there are any
29:05doorbell cameras
29:06within the area
29:07that may have
29:07you know
29:08captured the incident
29:09itself
29:10or the offenders movement
29:11in the southwest
29:14of England
29:15in the county
29:16of Somerset
29:17lies the small village
29:19of Norton Fitzwarren
29:20home to just
29:22over 3,000 people
29:24including
29:25married couple
29:26Stephen
29:26and Jennifer Chappell
29:28lived in a small
29:32housing estate
29:33where everyone
29:34knew each other
29:34Jennifer Chappell
29:36worked in the
29:37local garden centre
29:38cafe
29:38and her husband
29:41Stephen
29:41was a teacher
29:42they were very much
29:44in love
29:44and they had
29:45two young children
29:47and they were
29:48friendly
29:49approachable
29:50people
29:51that
29:51they were liked
29:52by almost everyone
29:54Stephen and Jennifer
29:56lived next door
29:58to Colin
29:58and Kaylee Reeves
29:59the Reeves family
30:01and the Chappells
30:03were friends
30:03during lockdown
30:05they texted each other
30:06checking in on each other
30:08making sure
30:09everyone was okay
30:10I believe
30:11that Mrs. Chappell
30:12and Mrs. Reeves
30:13shared the school van
30:14because they had
30:15children of a similar age
30:17and then
30:18it all sort of changed
30:20tensions escalated
30:23between the two families
30:24over the parking spaces
30:25directly outside
30:27their homes
30:27this minor annoyance
30:31was growing
30:32into a daily obsession
30:34Mrs. Chappell
30:36had bought a second car
30:37and she used to park it
30:39on the road
30:40at the bottom
30:41of the Reeves' parking space
30:43and this
30:44didn't exactly
30:45obstruct
30:46the Reeves' parking space
30:48but it made it
30:48more difficult
30:49for Colin Reeves
30:51to reverse
30:51in and out of his space
30:53Colin Reeves
30:55confronted Jennifer
30:56the exchange
30:57was captured
30:58on her doorbell camera
30:59hello
31:00hello
31:00hello
31:01yeah we can
31:02you can't
31:03you can't
31:03you can't
31:04you can't hear
31:04when you can't hear
31:05when you can't hear
31:05you can't hear
31:06you can't hear
31:07you can't hear
31:07emmy palito
31:08is a forensic video analyst
31:10and an expert witness
31:11in criminal cases
31:12in the UK
31:13the sound
31:15in this clip
31:16is particularly important
31:17the actual camera
31:19has got a microphone
31:20as well
31:20that will switch
31:21on and off
31:22depending on
31:22how loud
31:23the conversation is
31:24you can't
31:25you can't hear
31:26when you're talking
31:27when Colin
31:37is close
31:38to the camera
31:39we can clearly hear
31:40what he's saying
31:41to Jennifer
31:41this vehicle
31:43we're seeing here
31:43belongs to Jennifer
31:44this is the vehicle
31:45that is causing
31:47upset to him
31:48but the situation
32:01intensified
32:02Stephen Chappell
32:05Jennifer's husband
32:06was manoeuvring
32:07out of his parking space
32:09and he accidentally
32:10bumped
32:11Colin Reeves' car
32:13so that kind of
32:14changed the relationship
32:15a bit after that
32:16they weren't quite
32:17as friendly
32:18the relationship
32:21deteriorated further
32:22over arguments
32:24about the Chappell's
32:25cat
32:25and other
32:26petty disagreements
32:28there was then
32:30quite a tense
32:30exchange of swear words
32:32between Colin Reeves
32:34and Mrs. Chappell
32:35he's the one who
32:40stopped it
32:40we can identify
32:43Jennifer here
32:44and we know
32:45from recognising
32:46the voice
32:47and from
32:47previous recordings
32:49that that's Colin
32:50that that's Colin
32:50for the police
32:55this is essential
32:56because it kind of
32:57proves that the
32:58relationship between
32:59them is deteriorating
33:01rapidly
33:01and is therefore
33:03at this point
33:03where potentially
33:04something violent
33:06and sinister
33:06could start working
33:07in Colin's head
33:08we can all relate to
33:13being in a dispute
33:14with a neighbour
33:14because whether it's
33:16noise or someone
33:17parking in your spot
33:18or the person next door
33:19gardening too often
33:20these are invasions
33:22of your sense of space
33:24and your sense of sanity
33:26sometimes
33:27and I think that
33:28compounding of even trivial
33:30tiny things
33:31over and over and over
33:32and over again
33:33is like pushing
33:33into a wound
33:34and at some point
33:36it can feel
33:36like the only way
33:38to deal with it
33:39is to take dramatic action
33:41the tensions extended
33:47beyond the doorstep
33:48Colin Reeves had gone
33:52to the garden centre
33:53where Mrs. Chappell worked
33:55and she said
33:56that he was staring at her
33:57apparently he went there twice
33:59Jennifer Chappell
34:01definitely felt
34:02intimidated by his presence
34:04and definitely felt
34:05like he had gone there
34:07to scare her
34:09or to make her feel uneasy
34:11Colin Reeves
34:14was an army veteran
34:15he was part of the Royal Engineers
34:18and in 2008
34:20then he went to Afghanistan
34:22where he was stationed
34:23at Camp Bastion
34:25in his role
34:26with the Royal Engineers
34:27and also
34:28on the Prisoner of War camp
34:30when Colin returned
34:33from duty
34:33his experience of war
34:35had an impact on him
34:36it affected his work
34:38and his relationship
34:39he was a different Colin
34:41he had completely changed
34:44he was withdrawn
34:45relations between Colin
34:47and Kayleigh
34:47started to break down
34:48Colin Reeves
34:49did turn to drink
34:51and when he was drunk
34:53he was abusive
34:54to his wife Kayleigh
34:55Colin's experiences
34:58in the army
34:59had also led him
35:00to develop a fear
35:01of camera surveillance
35:02which affected
35:03his civilian job
35:04as a truck driver
35:05he felt like
35:09he was always on camera
35:10because there were cameras
35:11watching him in the lorry
35:12and he became more and more
35:14depressed and withdrawn
35:15on the 21st of November 2020
35:20Colin went to Taunton
35:21with his mother and children
35:22to see the Christmas lights
35:24being switched on
35:25while they were there
35:28he was surrounded by crowds
35:30and his mum said
35:31that she could see
35:32he felt very uneasy
35:33being in such a crowded place
35:35after lockdown
35:36he also saw the war memorial
35:38in Taunton
35:39and Colin Reeves said
35:41that this reminded him
35:42of Remembrance Day
35:43which was always
35:44a difficult time for him
35:45when Colin got home
35:48he put the kids to bed
35:49it had already been
35:51a tough day
35:52then his wife Kayleigh
35:54asked for a trial separation
35:56following that then
35:58Colin went
35:59and sat on the stairs
36:00and he said he cried
36:02just 40 minutes later
36:07a man was captured
36:08on Stephen and Jennifer
36:09Chappell's garden camera
36:10we can see
36:13an individual
36:14crouching down
36:16the suspect
36:18was trying
36:19absolutely everything
36:21not to be
36:22detected by the light
36:24because the footage
36:26is in infrared
36:26and because
36:27of the angle of view
36:29we can't identify
36:30this person
36:31at this stage
36:32but what we can see
36:34it's some
36:37black tonalities
36:38on the right forearm
36:40which might indicate
36:42a tattoo
36:42but it's got
36:44linear form
36:45which is extending
36:47from the hand
36:48potentially could be
36:49a weapon
36:50this tiny detail
36:54uncovered in the footage
36:55was about to become
36:56hugely significant
36:58one of the chapel's
37:01neighbours
37:01watching TV
37:02with his partner
37:03when he heard
37:04screaming
37:05coming from next door
37:06he heard
37:08a man shouting
37:10die
37:10die
37:11we can see
37:14a cat
37:15running away
37:17from the scene
37:18could indicate
37:20that there's something
37:21inside the property
37:22that the cat
37:23is obviously scared about
37:24a similar figure
37:27leaves the house
37:28with completely
37:29different body language
37:30the suspect
37:32is not crouching
37:33or sneaking
37:34anymore
37:34potentially this
37:36could indicate
37:36that he has
37:38got no more
37:38people to worry
37:40about hearing him
37:40or seeing him
37:41moments later
37:44a 999 call
37:46is made
37:47you're through to the police
37:51what's the location
37:52of your emergency
37:52I've stabbed
37:56the neighbours

38:05whereabouts have you been stabbed
38:06no not me
38:08the neighbours
38:08the neighbours been stabbed

38:10by me
38:12by you
38:13yes
38:14right ok
38:15what's your name
38:16Colin Reeves
38:18alright Colin
38:19tell me exactly
38:20what's happened
38:20take a deep breath
38:22we have a first
38:25admission of guilt
38:25from the caller
38:26the emergency calls
38:28are very important
38:29pieces of evidence
38:30the operator
38:31is not only
38:32providing
38:32support and help
38:34but is also
38:35gathering
38:36information
38:37about what has happened
38:38which is being recorded
38:39I went around
38:41yeah
38:42with a knife
38:43ok
38:44I've stabbed both of them
38:50alright
38:50how many times
38:51I don't know
38:55a couple times each
38:56not
38:56two or three times
38:59each maybe
39:00ok
39:00are they still
39:02conscious and breathing
39:03I don't think so
39:04no
39:04ok
39:05Colin sounded
39:07pretty with it
39:08for a man
39:08who had just
39:09stabbed his neighbours
39:10he was able
39:11to answer
39:12all the questions
39:13asked of him
39:14by the call handler
39:15alright
39:16what kind of knife
39:17did you use
39:18the female's voice
39:28that we heard
39:29in the background
39:29is the caller's wife
39:31alright
39:32Colin
39:32just down the line
39:33to meet you
39:33ok
39:33we're going to get
39:34some help out there
39:35so you stabbed them
39:37both several times
39:38yes
39:39you've done the right
39:40thing by calling us
39:41ok
39:41next door
39:46at the chapel's house
39:48the neighbours
39:48were first
39:49on the scene
39:50after they
39:52heard the screaming
39:53from Mr. and Mrs.
39:54Chapel's house
39:55they went
39:57into the chapel's house
39:58where they
39:59found them lying
40:00on the floor
40:01in a pool of blood
40:02they checked
40:02the chapels
40:03for a pulse
40:04and could find none
40:05Stephen and Jennifer's
40:08two young children
40:09were asleep
40:10upstairs
40:11the police arrived
40:12ready to arrest
40:14Colin
40:14at first
40:17Colin Reeves'
40:17father Brian
40:18came out of the house
40:20and they thought
40:21that he was
40:22Colin Reeves
40:23the man that they
40:23were supposed to be
40:24arresting
40:25put your hands up
40:26make him
40:27go in
40:28put your hands up
40:30hold still
40:33hold still
40:34listen
40:34you're under arrest
40:36at the minute
40:36and the attempted
40:38murder
40:38are two people
40:39inside the address
40:40next door
40:41do you understand
40:41so you can see
40:44body one camera
40:45on this officer
40:46he gives us
40:47a visual
40:48of the defendant
40:49we can see
40:50his tattoos
40:51the same clothing
40:52let's walk over here
40:54a minute
40:54I'll go
40:54Colin had already
40:58confessed to the double
40:59murder
40:59but in the police
41:00interview
41:01it was as if
41:02he was still
41:02in the army
41:03on active duty
41:04in another police interview
41:21Colin refused
41:23to answer questions
41:24did you kill
41:26did you kill Jennifer
41:26and Stephen
41:27no comment
41:29how were you involved
41:31in their deaths
41:32no comment
41:34in court
41:37Colin pled guilty
41:38to manslaughter
41:39on the grounds
41:40of diminished
41:40responsibility
41:41his defense argued
41:43that the security
41:44light in the garden
41:45triggered his
41:46post-traumatic
41:47stress disorder
41:48which led him
41:49to kill
41:50Stephen
41:50and Jennifer
41:51Chapel
41:51we can clearly
41:54see
41:54ill intention
41:56possibly a weapon
41:58being held
41:59we can kind of
42:00discern that
42:00it was already there
42:01to commit a crime
42:03or to
42:04cause some serious hurt
42:06things like lights
42:11including white lights
42:12can trigger flashbacks
42:14which are
42:15one of the main
42:15symptoms of post-traumatic
42:16stress disorder
42:17so that piece of it
42:19is reasonable
42:20but then saying
42:22that that caused
42:23him to kill
42:24his neighbors
42:25is nonsense
42:26people with
42:26post-traumatic
42:27stress disorder
42:27aren't justified
42:29to kill people
42:30and they don't
42:31typically go on
42:32to harm anybody
42:32so that
42:33that's a huge leap
42:35from what is
42:36a likely trigger
42:37for a flashback
42:38whether or not
42:39it actually
42:39triggered a flashback
42:40I don't know
42:40but even if it did
42:43that is no excuse
42:44to then go
42:45and murder people
42:45in court
42:50the details
42:51of what actually
42:52happened
42:52on the night
42:53of the 21st
42:54of November
42:54were revealed
42:55Colin Raves
42:57went to his
42:59military plaque
43:00on the wall
43:01and this was
43:02a framed ornament
43:03that he was given
43:04when he left
43:05the army
43:05and it had
43:06a ceremonial dagger
43:07which was traditionally
43:09given the soldiers
43:10you know
43:10when they were
43:11decommissioned
43:13when Colin Raves
43:15went into the
43:15chapel's living room
43:16he was met
43:17by Stephen Chappell
43:18at the door
43:19and he stabbed him
43:21at least six times
43:23some of the wounds
43:24were up to 21 cm deep
43:26Stephen Chappell
43:29then stumbled
43:29a couple of steps
43:30forward
43:31and fell
43:32near the door
43:33Colin Raves
43:35then went over
43:36to the sofa
43:37where Jennifer Chappell
43:38was sitting
43:39and he stabbed her
43:40six times as well
43:42and she then
43:43slumped forward
43:44onto the floor
43:44and that's
43:46where she died
43:47when he spoke
43:49to the police
43:49Colin Raves
43:51said that
43:51he'd stabbed
43:52Mr and Mrs Chappell
43:53a couple of times
43:54each
43:55but in fact
43:56it had been
43:56quite a sustained
43:57and bloody attack
43:59a jury found
44:02Colin Raves
44:03guilty of murder
44:04he was sentenced
44:05to a minimum term
44:07of 38 years
44:08in prison
44:08in one very big
44:13research study
44:14on British soldiers
44:15researchers found
44:17that soldiers
44:18especially those
44:19who've returned
44:20from active duty
44:20so who were in combat
44:21they're three times
44:23more likely
44:23to be convicted
44:24of violent offences
44:25and if we're looking
44:27at numbers
44:27one in five
44:29so just over
44:3020%
44:31of people
44:32who return
44:33under the age of 30
44:34are convicted
44:35of a violent offence
44:36which is astronomical
44:38the numbers are so high
44:40partly because
44:41in military training
44:42you're taught
44:42that violence
44:43is a conflict resolution tool
44:44that that ends
44:45your disputes
44:46second
44:47there's often
44:48an aggrandizement
44:49of aggression
44:49so it's valued
44:51it's seen as a positive trait
44:52to be aggressive
44:53and stand your ground
44:54I'm absolutely not saying
44:55that everyone
44:56who is in combat
44:57or is part of the military
44:59and comes home
45:00that they are a danger
45:01to society
45:02we need to be really careful
45:03not to be
45:04leaning into the
45:06hero to zero narrative
45:08because that can be really
45:09stigmatizing
45:11also for individuals themselves
45:12instead what we should be looking at
45:14is making sure that support
45:15that transition
45:16is effectively supported
45:18so that we don't have
45:19these kinds of outcomes
45:20I think the murder
45:24of Stephen and Jennifer Chappell
45:27is quite an unnerving one
45:29because Colin Reeves
45:31probably had nothing more
45:33than depression and anxiety
45:35like a lot of people
45:37but that combined
45:39with the dispute
45:41over the parking
45:41caused them to just
45:43snap one day
45:44it doesn't make any sense
45:46what he did
45:47and now his children
45:49have no father
45:50because he's in prison
45:51and the chapel's sons
45:53are orphans
45:54and now his children
45:58are in prison
45:58and now his children
45:59are in prison
45:59and now his children
46:00are in prison
46:00and now his children
46:01are in prison
46:01and now his children
46:02are in prison
46:02and now his children
46:03are in prison
46:03and now his children
46:04are in prison
46:04and now his children
46:05are in prison
46:05and now his children
46:06are in prison
46:06and now his children
46:07are in prison
46:07and now his children
46:08are in prison
46:08and now his children
46:09are in prison
46:09and now his children
46:10are in prison
46:10and now his children
46:11are in prison
46:11and now his children
