00:01It just sounds like something bad is happening to her.
00:04I heard her scream, no, stop it.
00:07I heard some gunshot.
00:08Drop it, whatever it is, drop it!
00:11That does not prove that I killed my wife.
00:14We know what happened because the video tells us what happened.
00:17The camera doesn't lie.
00:20This time on Killers Caught on Camera.
00:25In Florida, a woman is recorded screaming for her life.
00:34I heard her scream, no, and then I heard something about, it hurts, stop it.
00:38There appeared to be some signs that there was foul play.
00:43And in the UK, a brutal murder of a woman stabbed more than 50 times in her own home.
00:52I'm trying to read the text. I don't know answers.
00:53And then I walked into that.
00:56Something is not right.
00:57Jupiter, Florida.
01:19A safe community on the East Coast where crime is half the national average and murder is rare.
01:25It was home to Gretchen Anthony, a devoted mother close to her family and friends.
01:34This is such a special place for us.
01:36The sense of community, the sense of fun that we all had here on the afternoons after a long day of fishing or going out on the boat.
01:43And this is where a place where Gretchen and I would meet up here with all of our friends and there would just be a big gathering.
01:51David Anthony was her personal trainer.
01:54Gretchen fell in love and they got married in 2015.
01:57David is tall, handsome, charming, outgoing, funny, and just very charismatic.
02:07And there were instant sparks.
02:11She was so in love.
02:13They appeared to just have this magical family life.
02:16Five years into the marriage, it's March 2020.
02:25David had become increasingly volatile.
02:28Gretchen made the decision to file for divorce and moved on.
02:33David found the separation difficult and decided to live with his mother.
02:36It wasn't long after that decision to separate that David's mental health started to decline very quickly.
02:45Then the pandemic hit.
02:47Gretchen's family got a message she'd got COVID.
02:51But something about Gretchen's texts didn't feel right.
02:56The way the text messages were structured weren't making any sense.
03:01Her messages were totally out of character.
03:03And they tried to get in touch with her via phone calls or text messages.
03:09And she is not responding.
03:11The family were so concerned, they decided to involve the police.
03:16We started receiving phone calls from family members and from friends of Gretchen Anthony who were concerned about her.
03:24They were receiving text messages from her phone indicating that she's ill.
03:31That's COVID-19.
03:33We made it to the hospital and later transferred to a COVID specialty center.
03:38Messages coming from her phone aren't making any sense.
03:42They're not adding up.
03:43And so it was just red flag, red flag, red flag.
03:46When Gretchen stopped sharing her location on her phone, the police talked to Jupiter Medical Center, the last place she said she was going.
03:56We did a check with the staff and we were able to find that she was not a patient of their hospital.
04:06Police put in an urgent request for the CCTV footage from inside the hospital and the car park.
04:14Gretchen was nowhere and a missing persons investigation was now underway.
04:19Something very shady was going on and now I'm absolutely terrified for my friend.
04:28Her house had been locked up for days.
04:31Jupiter police went to her property.
04:34Body cans rolled.
04:37Evidence was being gathered for the state attorney's office, which was now involved.
04:41They've knocked at the door and they don't get an answer.
04:49Gretchen is not there, but there are some things within Gretchen's residence that causes some concern.
04:57There's some towels on the washing machine closet that has a substance that was consistent with a blood-like substance.
05:06There's some spray bottles and a cleanup rag on the kitchen counter.
05:09There's a broken picture frame that appears to be normally hanging on the wall.
05:15The search showed no sign of Gretchen.
05:18Most notably, there is a key broken off inside of a lock that leads to Gretchen Anthony's garage.
05:31We're not able to initially gain entry into the garage, which is concerning.
05:36They had no idea what lay behind the locked door.
05:42Law enforcement officers forced entry into the garage.
05:47There's a very strong odor of cleaning agents and the garage appears to be damp.
05:55Based on what we found in the residence, we became more concerned about where Gretchen Anthony was.
06:04There appeared to be some signs that there was foul play.
06:07That leads us to believe that something transpired in Gretchen's garage.
06:16Body cams picked up disturbing witness statements about an incident 24 hours before Gretchen went missing.
06:22We were approached by one of her neighbors that lives across the way.
06:27I heard a really serious woman scream.
06:30Like, just screaming like she was being attacked.
06:34I wanted to know if we were there for the attack that happened at the residence on days previous.
06:39And then I heard her scream, no.
06:41And then I heard something about, it hurts, stop it.
06:44And then I got up and came outside and walked down the alley and then saw a truck backed in that I didn't recognize.
06:56It was backed in a couple doors down.
06:58I was outside for about 15 minutes.
06:59I didn't hear anything else.
07:01The truck was running.
07:02It wasn't, there wasn't anybody in it.
07:04The truck was running.
07:05The scream was really serious.
07:09Another neighbor noticed fresh white stains down the drive.
07:18There was some type of cleaning agent running from under Gretchen's garage, almost consistent with someone was doing some type of cleaning inside of the garage.
07:31The police knew they had to work fast.
07:35They needed to track down her estranged husband, David Anthony.
07:39They went to his mother's house where he'd been living since the separation from Gretchen.
07:45Body cams recorded the encounter.
07:47Jupiter Police.
07:51Hello.
07:52Hi.
07:52Hi, Jupiter Police.
07:53Sorry to bother you.
07:54Yeah.
07:54Is David home?
07:55No.
07:56Okay.
07:57Are you his mother?
07:59Okay.
08:00All right.
08:00We're just trying to get in touch with him.
08:02It's involving his wife.
08:05I think they're separated.
08:05Gretchen?
08:06Right.
08:06Okay.
08:07Have you heard from David recently?
08:09No.
08:10Is he staying here?
08:11Um, no.
08:14I say that because Gretchen's been in touch with me because she's in the CDC center.
08:20She has the virus.
08:23He was just said he was going to Costa Rica because the virus was, like, invading the country.
08:31Why?
08:31What's going on?
08:32You're scaring me.
08:34All detectives knew was that David told his mother he was heading for Costa Rica.
08:39We're looking to find Gretchen Anthony, um, most, most importantly.
08:45Um, finding him may help find her.
08:49Luckily, detectives got a breakthrough as images from the cameras at the hospital revealed an ominous twist.
08:57We were able to get video from the Jupiter Medical Center.
09:00We were able to show early morning video of Gretchen Anthony's vehicle coming into the property and being parked on the northeast portion of the parking lot.
09:12And there's an individual who got out of Gretchen's vehicle, except it wasn't Gretchen.
09:19A tall individual dressed in dark clothing.
09:24We still don't know where Gretchen is and if she's okay.
09:29So, now, I'm terrified.
09:32I'm absolutely terrified for her.
09:37Evidence from the cameras was adding up.
09:40Inside Gretchen's home, detectives discovered a goldmine of footage.
09:45Gretchen has multiple cameras inside of her residence.
09:50After feeling unsafe from David's increasingly violent behavior during their separation, Gretchen set up a complete home security system.
10:01She was filing for divorce and that was it.
10:04They were done.
10:05David just could not handle that information.
10:08So, someone like David Antony might, in these kinds of situations, think,
10:15well, but you've committed to me and you are mine now and we made that promise and now that you're not wanting to keep that promise slash you want to leave me, that is an unacceptable course of action.
10:28A really common theme is this idea that men have, or some men have, that they possess or own women.
10:36And the problem is with that, once you feel like you're losing this, effectively, object, this then turns into a situation where you go, no, but no one else is allowed to have her.
10:46She's mine.
10:47And that can subsequently turn to justifications for extreme behavior, extreme violence and saying, well, if I can't have her, then literally nobody else can and I will destroy her.
10:59Search warrants were executed to obtain the footage from the cameras.
11:07We are counting on the surveillance footage from her house to give us some answers.
11:17That is potentially what could give us the biggest lead or the most information about what transpired in her residence.
11:27But there was some bad news.
11:30There were some cameras that were missing.
11:33Video equipment in the garage had been taken down.
11:37Detectives tried to find out if the footage was backed up online.
11:42Meanwhile, police started to track David's and Gretchen's phone.
11:47Essentially what's happening is they're able to get an update, let's say every 15 minutes, as to the location of her phone.
11:57And we learn these phones are traveling together.
12:01And they are traveling together away from Jupiter, Florida.
12:07They were able to say on the 25th that her phone was in Pensacola, Florida.
12:13We are able to see David getting money from the ATM.
12:20We see him going inside of a store.
12:22We see him going inside of the pawn shop.
12:26And not just in Palm Beach County, but as he travels north hours away outside of the county.
12:33We contacted that jewelry store.
12:36They were able to provide us with some video footage of him in the store, also his vehicle outside of the store.
12:42We also have surveillance footage of him pawning more jewelry that belonged to Gretchen.
12:50Police continued to track both phones and follow them heading west across the southern states.
12:59Gretchen's phone is pinging in close proximity to David's phone.
13:06You never see Gretchen with him in any other surveillance.
13:11You see his dog occasionally, but you never see Gretchen.
13:14As the net tightened, Gretchen and David's phones are located in Las Cruces, New Mexico, less than an hour from the Mexican border.
13:28It was a race against time to find them.
13:31Detectives in Florida asked Las Cruces police for an urgent traffic stop.
13:38You need officers to block on me.
13:40I need them here.
13:41But Gretchen was not in the truck.
13:45Hands up so I can see them.
13:47Keep them up for me, please.
13:50Put your hands behind your back.
13:54So this is about your wife.
13:57Okay, I guess she's been reported missing.
14:01Last I heard, she was in a CDC facility getting treatment for coronavirus.
14:08And what makes you believe that?
14:10Her sister texted it to me.
14:12Her sister did?
14:13Texted it to you.
14:15Well, where's the CDC's place at?
14:17She didn't mention it.
14:20They spoke to David.
14:22He didn't provide any information as to her location.
14:26When was the last time you talked to your wife?
14:29Saturday.
14:30Last Saturday.
14:31Last Saturday.
14:32Did you guys talk in person?
14:34We talked in person.
14:35Where at?
14:37At a gas station.
14:39And he didn't provide any information that would indicate that he had committed a crime against her.
14:44It was the same truck seen outside Gretchen's house seven days earlier.
14:50The police had no idea what lay beneath the tarp.
14:54There was evidence that Gretchen's cell phone was with David's.
15:11Police impounded his pickup truck.
15:14The officers in Florida actually have a search warrant for his album.
15:18Okay.
15:19So we're going to take that.
15:19So at this point, we had a reason to take his car.
15:23We didn't have a reason to take him into custody.
15:25We're still evidence gathering.
15:30So we wanted to gather as much evidence as possible to find Gretchen's whereabouts.
15:35She mentioned being in trouble.
15:37I suffered with her work.
15:39She said she was in trouble.
15:40You know, and she didn't want to give me too much because she didn't want to put media in the danger.
15:44He gives a lot of statements about conspiracy theories of things at Gretchen's job that she has uncovered.
15:53And for her own safety, she's essentially gone into hiding.
15:58Have you had any contact with her since?
16:01No.
16:02Las Cruz's police let David go, but kept his vehicle and the unknown contents under the tarp.
16:10Okay, you can relax and follow his instructions now.
16:16Back in Jupiter, cybercrime specialists worked hard to retrieve the camera footage from the night Gretchen went missing.
16:22We were able to write a search warrant that was addressed to a surveillance company.
16:29We were also able to obtain footage from the cloud.
16:35A crucial part of this investigation was the video footage that we ultimately reviewed from Gretchen's house.
16:46The footage stored in the cloud included video recordings from the missing cameras.
16:54Detectives immediately got to work, hoping it would reveal exactly what happened to Gretchen.
16:59There is a camera that is on the patio of Gretchen's home.
17:08It's still dark outside, although it's the early morning hours.
17:12And you see what appears to be a tall male individual.
17:17This person lurking on her patio.
17:20They're moving around very slowly, methodically.
17:24It is unclear as to what they're doing.
17:28We don't know whether Gretchen hears someone outside.
17:32The surveillance shows that person was in Gretchen Anthony's porch for quite some time before she answered the door.
17:46Gretchen comes to her door.
17:48Her door swings out, and this person is behind the door.
17:51Some of the footage was so graphic, it was never released.
17:57The same person, this tall male dressed in all black.
18:04We see this person taking Gretchen or dragging Gretchen or forcing Gretchen to the garage as he muffles her screens.
18:15This is the same garage where the key was broken in the lock.
18:27There is footage of what appears to be the back of what we believe to be Gretchen's head.
18:34And she is on the floor of her garage.
18:39And there is this tall male dressed in all black moving around Gretchen's garage.
18:47And there is one camera that captures this individual as he turns around and looks directly into the camera.
18:55And that person was David Anthony.
19:00One of those videos captured David looking up at the camera and taking it down and tossing it across the room.
19:12At this point, we are convinced that David Anthony has killed Gretchen.
19:23It was enough to issue an arrest warrant.
19:27Then, out of nowhere, Detective Kennerson got a call from their chief suspect.
19:32I spoke with Gretchen today.
19:34You spoke with Gretchen today?
19:37Yeah.
19:38So what?
19:38We've obtained legal representation.
19:40You both have?
19:41She went to prepare a statement.
19:45The person calling me was David Anthony.
19:47He conveyed a message to me on some alleged circumstances as to why Gretchen may have been in danger.
19:55Gretchen's terrified for her life.
19:57Someone was sent to her house to hurt her the other weekend.
20:00And Gretchen hasn't ruled out her ex-husband.
20:03But the call ended abruptly.
20:05You and Gretchen obtained representation?
20:10Are you there?
20:12And she provided the...
20:14And who provided the statement?
20:16Are you there?
20:20David was now on the run, close to the Mexican border.
20:25They had just a few hours to catch him.
20:27Detective Kennerson headed to Las Cruces, New Mexico.
20:31This is when we were able to execute a search warrant on David's car, which they had seized for us.
20:38David was still at large, but the manhunt became even more urgent when they discovered what was in the back of the truck.
20:45Cameras from Gretchen's garage and a voice-controlled Alexa device.
20:50She used the Echo devices in her garage to turn the lights on.
20:56During the attack, Gretchen and Anthony attempted to have Alexa summon his help.
21:01The audio files are disturbing.
21:04Alexa, come on!
21:05It sounded like she was muffled.
21:10Alexa, come on!
21:16After we completed the investigation on his vehicle, we then went searching for David Anthony.
21:25With David just a few miles from the Mexican border and driving to Costa Rica, every minute counted.
21:32Homeland Security deployed the latest tracking technology.
21:38Las Cruces police traced his car on the move.
21:42Outside a convenience store, David Anthony was cornered at gunpoint.
21:47Get out!
21:48Can I get up?
21:48No! Get down!
21:49I'm standing up!
21:50Get down!
21:54Get out!
21:55Get out!
21:55Get out of the car!
21:57All right, all right.
21:59Get down!
22:00Drop it!
22:01Drop it!
22:02Whatever it is!
22:03Drop it!
22:03What's he got in his hand?
22:04Stop resisting me!
22:07I got nothing!
22:08Sir!
22:08Flat on your face!
22:09Out like an airplane!
22:11Hands out like an airplane!
22:13Flat down!
22:17He dropped a bunch of stuff.
22:20I was worried about a gun.
22:22He kept going in the car.
22:23I almost shot him.
22:25Bring your other hand back.
22:27Okay, sir.
22:27Yes.
22:28I'll do everything you say.
22:28I almost shot him.
22:29I'll do whatever you say.
22:30I'll do whatever you say.
22:30I'll do whatever you say.
22:31David was arrested and taken into custody for the arrest warrant from back in Florida for
22:38second-degree murder and kidnapping.
22:42Finally, Detective Kennerson had his suspect.
22:45David Anthony, Gretchen's estranged husband, was confronted with the gruesome footage from
22:51Gretchen's home.
22:52I presented the surveillance video of him.
22:55We presented evidence of what happened.
22:58Actual evidence that we obtained.
23:00David kept telling us that Gretchen was still alive.
23:03Despite his denials, he'd been caught on camera at the crime scene.
23:08We know what happened because the video tells us what happened, right?
23:13So what happened?
23:14You killed him.
23:15I told you what happened.
23:18I told you this numerous times.
23:21She's still alive.
23:23Even when police showed David the video evidence, he denied he caused her any harm.
23:28You put your hand over her mouth and dragged her into the garage.
23:34It's on video, David.
23:36You might want to think that, David, because you don't want to face the facts of what you
23:39did.
23:40I was trying to warn her.
23:41We presented evidence to him.
23:43We presented evidence that we actually had to show what he did.
23:49You put your hand over her mouth as you dragged her into the garage, then bleached down the
23:59driveway, but unfortunately for you, the cadaver dog hit on the garage, and we found blood spatter.
24:06So there's no way that she's alive.
24:09You murdered her in that garage, and we'd like to know where you put her mom.
24:16I know he's the one who did it.
24:25David Anthony was subsequently charged with second-degree murder.
24:29But police still had no idea where Gretchen's body was.
24:33Not having a body in a murder case is difficult.
24:36Jurors expect to see a body, right?
24:38If you're saying this person is dead, and the person you've charged killed this person,
24:44show it to me, which makes sense.
24:48Then a new witness came forward with a critical clue as to where her body might be.
24:53I remember horrible, rotting smell as I was driving home from work.
24:59You know, I've smelled dead animals before.
25:01It smelled a little out of the ordinary.
25:04I noticed some buzzards flying in the air, and that's where the buzzards were flying.
25:10It narrowed the search to a busy part of Jupiter, but wasn't specific enough to find her body.
25:17David continued to maintain his innocence.
25:19Desperate to get some sort of closure for Gretchen's family,
25:29Creche Mixon changed her approach.
25:31Her family didn't want to go to sleep every night, wondering where Gretchen was in the world.
25:40And they wanted to have a place where her daughter could go to, her mother could go to,
25:43her sisters, her friends could go to and know that she was there.
25:47Defense counsel approached me, wanting to discuss potential negotiations.
25:58So as a part of these negotiations, Dave is going to tell us where Gretchen was.
26:08Denying the families the ability to see and often bury, of course, their loved ones
26:15is a major barrier to grief, and it's a major barrier to move on.
26:19So if we look at the escalation of violence to femicide, which is the killing of girls and women,
26:25we can see usually a clear pattern, especially in intimate partner relationships.
26:28And it starts with, as you might expect, male aggression.
26:32Then there's victim blaming.
26:34So the man is saying, you are making me do this.
26:37Then there is an escalation.
26:40So the violence gets worse.
26:41After that, there's resistance by the woman who then says, no, you know, this is not acceptable.
26:48Then the woman usually tries to leave the relationship, which is met with consequences.
26:56David Anthony gave up his claims of innocence and decided to swap the location of Gretchen's body
27:02for a shorter sentence.
27:04On the morning of December 21st, 2020, he and his attorney provided the location of Gretchen
27:12Anthony's body.
27:15One traffic, one red tag.
27:18Cameras on helicopters and mapping technology got involved in the search for Gretchen's body.
27:24Juliet, Charlie, Zulu, kilo, two, six.
27:27And last day it's going to be Bravo Alpha 001781.
27:31I wanted her to not be there and I wanted her to be okay.
27:36But I knew the reality was we were going to bring Gretchen home, just not in the way that
27:44anyone would have wanted.
27:463,800 block of Kirk Road.
27:50They close in on the site.
27:52There's a cadaver dog on scene.
27:57There were crime scene investigators who began the search for Gretchen's body.
28:03Nine months had passed since Gretchen went missing.
28:06At this point, her body may not be identifiable.
28:11This is the location where we located Gretchen Anthony's body on December 21st, 2020.
28:20Just south of that large, I believe it's an oak tree, um, in that lower area, um, of the
28:28ground, that's where, um, Gretchen was with her husband.
28:31It's not a hugely secluded area.
28:34We were able to identify her on scene and, um, and let her family members know that.
28:40We were able to see tattoos on her and there was one in particular and I recall there was
28:46a detective who yelled out about one of her tattoos that she had.
28:50Medical examiners determined Gretchen died from multiple stab wounds to her neck and torso.
28:56I don't know where this investigation would, would be without surveillance footage.
29:04Without those cameras inside of Gretchen's house, without the cameras from, um, the ATM or from the pawn shop.
29:13I don't know that we would have gotten to an arrest of David Anthony for murdering Gretchen.
29:23But for those cameras, we would have, we would have never known.
29:27Due to COVID regulations, no grand jury could be assembled.
29:31David Anthony was convicted of kidnapping and second degree murder.
29:36Sentenced to 38 years in prison.
29:38We all miss the radiant, beautiful, smiling, vibrant person that she always was and the
29:46energy she brought to everybody she met and just the happiness that she just gave to everyone.
29:55So it's hard to go on and, and I miss my friend.
29:59I miss my friend.
30:00David, I'm glad David's in prison.
30:03You have no right to take another human being's life and steal that person from people who loved
30:09her and people she loved.
30:12She's gone and you're still here.
30:15And thankfully you're in prison and you get to think about that for a very, very long time.
30:19A crucial part of the evidence gathered against David Anthony was the footage captured by the
30:35cameras in the home and on the body.
30:43Recording everything and everyone they came into contact with.
30:46No, get down, get down.
30:56Emi Polito is an expert forensic video analyst who's worked on hundreds of cases in the UK.
31:03Contrary to common belief, body-worn cameras are always recording, but it's not until the
31:09point where the officer pressed the start button that that footage then becomes a video file
31:15that can then be retrieved later.
31:17And often it's crucial evidence as in the case of Carrie Woolley.
31:24In the United Kingdom, the West Midlands, with over 400 violent crimes a day, at its heart,
31:31the city of Birmingham.
31:33Back in early 2020, Carrie Woolley had returned to dating after divorcing the father of her two
31:39children.
31:41She met 38-year-old Ian Bennett and they started to go on the occasional date.
31:47The pair enjoyed spending time together and for a few weeks it seemed to be going well.
31:51In July, Ian and Carrie enjoy a night out.
31:58But early the next morning, police respond to an emergency call.
32:04Carrie had been found brutally murdered in her bedroom.
32:08Digital forensic experts searched for any crucial evidence captured on camera.
32:12Dr. Vasilios Karagianopoulos is a leading expert in criminal law and cybercrime at the University
32:21of Portsmouth.
32:26The police is equipped with body cam footage and that helps them gather evidence as things
32:33might unfold.
32:34It's got a very wide angle.
32:36So, you can see, we're actually looking through the eyes of the police officer at the scene.
32:43The cam will record if there's any kind of evidence flying around or if any other people
32:48come in or out that might have been witnesses.
32:53The body cam recorded Ian Bennett's witness statement.
32:57He was the last person to see her alive.
33:01I'm sorry, sir.
33:02What was the last one, sir?
33:03One o'clock I left, sir, this morning.
33:06Here.
33:06Yeah, we was having a few drinks.
33:08I left here at one.
33:10Professor Coral Dando is a former police officer who now applies psychological research to camera
33:16footage to understand criminal behaviour.
33:19When police arrived, he was standing outside.
33:23He provided them with a uninvited and very detailed account of his movements and his whereabouts.
33:32And, you know, his account seems fairly plausible.
33:35He is looking very distraught, quite shaken, trying to figure out what's happened.
33:52He's calling his mother.
33:53Looking quite shaken again and explaining what's happened to his mother on the phone.
34:10When we look at the context of a horrific murder scene, something is not right.
34:22Smoking, I see.
34:24Talking on his phone.
34:25A little bit of eye blinking, suggesting a bit of tears.
34:28But he's not traumatised by the looks of it.
34:31He was very calm.
34:34This very nuanced, very detailed, very sort of, at the time, plausible account of his movements and his whereabouts.
34:43And this struck me straight away as being a red flag and quite a significant red flag from a psychological point of view.
34:53Certainly having someone who just spills everything and tries to immediately tell you every single thing that they did that day is not abnormal, as is someone being very upset and calling their mom.
35:03They're acting through what they think people need to see to make them not look suspicious.
35:09So when we go back to that first scene, we think of the oversharing, we think of the calling performatively in front of the police, the mom, and the almost crying there.
35:19That now feels like a performance.
35:21But at the time, that would have been really difficult for police to spot because that could also be a normal reaction.
35:27We're looking for signs of nervousness, but nervousness looks different for different people.
35:30We're looking for things like inconsistent stories.
35:33We're looking for things like avoiding eye contact.
35:41He's the one that has found her and really quite shocked and upset.
35:55Ian's tears did not convince the police.
35:58Ian's mother, Linda, arrived on the scene.
36:15Straight away, she is a little bit more believable.
36:20You don't get this outpouring of information.
36:22So at the moment, we'll be going to Coventry.
36:25I don't know which Coventry.
36:26I'll let you know.
36:26It's possibly going to be Coventry, hopefully.
36:28Coventry?
36:29Yeah.
36:29That's the closest one we've got.
36:30You don't know how to get to Coventry.
36:32Linda didn't ask about Kerry.
36:34She was more concerned about her son's welfare.
36:37You just get these questions about where her son is.
36:41Where's my son?
36:42You know, what are you doing with my son?
36:43What's happened to my son?
36:45Is my son OK?
36:46So she's just asking a series of questions.
36:50Ian was taken into custody while the forensic team got to work.
36:54The autopsy revealed Kerry was smothered, strangled,
36:58and died from 54 stab wounds to the neck and upper torso.
37:06Investigators pulled both Kerry and Ian's phone records
37:09and discovered there was already some tension between the two.
37:15They'd only been dating on and off for a few weeks,
37:18but Ian was accusing a friend of Kerry's of sleeping with her.
37:23One of the interesting aspects of this case
37:26is it would seem as if Ian believed
37:31he was in a relationship with the victim.
37:34Ian was the sort of person that wanted to control
37:39and manage his partner's behaviour.
37:42Or maybe he's not had any successful relationships before,
37:45and this is the first one
37:46that he felt was going to go somewhere,
37:50real or perceived.
37:52And the fact that she didn't behave in the way that he expected
37:55was enough to trigger this response.
37:57The relationship doesn't have to be real.
38:00In the perpetrator's mind, it exists.
38:04Police dug deeper
38:08and discovered disturbing internet search records.
38:12This has turned into,
38:14I'm going to go and confront her,
38:15and maybe that has turned into a row of some sort.
38:22Or maybe he's thought,
38:24right, okay, I'm going to kill her,
38:26because both things happen
38:27in coercive and controlling relationships.
38:30It seemed like an intent to harm,
38:34but police still needed more evidence.
38:37Ian was at Kerry's flat that night,
38:39but claimed he left at about 1 a.m.
38:42Police checked CCTV footage in the area
38:45to verify his statement,
38:46and found him on camera.
38:52The closer he gets to the camera,
38:55the better the overall resolution
38:57of the area that we're looking.
38:58So even though we have CCTV here recorded at night time,
39:01we still have sufficient illumination from the street
39:05to allow to discern quite a fair contrast of detail,
39:10certainly with his face,
39:12with his clothing as well,
39:13which can be quite important as well
39:15for identification purposes.
39:16We can see here Ian actually leaving the flat
39:24late at night, carrying a bag.
39:27The second camera tracked him to a local park,
39:31still holding the bag.
39:33Minutes later, close observation showed
39:35he was travelling light.
39:38But what is interesting about these two clips,
39:40they're a few minutes apart,
39:41and in the first one,
39:44we are seeing the suspect
39:45potentially carrying a plastic bag,
39:49which again is consistent
39:50with what we've seen in previous footage.
39:52And then a few minutes later,
39:54and again we can tell from the timestamps,
39:57we can see a person of similar appearance
40:00to the one we've just seen,
40:02but without the carry bag.
40:05Even in the dark,
40:06the CCTV images were clear.
40:08CCTV has developed a lot
40:12during the last 10, 20 years.
40:16In the old days,
40:17it was more like a corroborative piece of evidence.
40:20During an investigation,
40:21you would have police officers
40:23knocking at people's doors,
40:25getting witness statements,
40:26trying to get some traditionally forensic evidence
40:28like fingerprints or DNA.
40:30So the roles have effectively reverted.
40:33CCTV is now the first source of evidence
40:36for an investigation, usually.
40:38then corroborated with other pieces of evidence.
40:41A third camera provided another breakthrough,
40:44a mysterious car.
40:47So in addition to regular CCTV,
40:49there is a police-controlled system of cameras
40:53called the Automatic Number Plate Recognition System,
40:56ANPR for short,
40:58and this can be used to record license plates
41:02and identify vehicles of interest
41:04and show us the movement of those vehicles
41:07across the country.
41:10Despite it being the middle of the night,
41:13investigators were able to identify the car.
41:16It belonged to Linda, Ian's mother.
41:21When they impounded the car,
41:23they made a discovery
41:24that changed the course of the investigation.
41:26There was a dash cam
41:28that was recording everything that was going on.
41:32And Ian was seen
41:34throwing something into the canal.
41:38Steve Jones is a former police officer,
41:41an expert in the cameras
41:42that are now the key tools in evidence gathering.
41:46Dash cams have now become a common practice
41:49right across the world.
41:50Most dash cams will automatically record
41:53when the ignition systems engage or are activated.
41:56The dash cam will capture the scene
41:58wherever that driver takes the vehicle.
42:00The police realized that the footage,
42:02not just for road traffic collisions,
42:04but for, you know, general crime incidents,
42:06that it can be invaluable.
42:08In the Kerry Woolley murder case,
42:09the dash cam from the mother's car,
42:11from Ian Bennett's mother's car,
42:13proves to be a pivotal piece of evidence.
42:15Police pulled the dash cam footage
42:17from the night Kerry died.
42:19This is Ian getting rid of something in the river,
42:22but this is his mother's car dash cam.
42:26And we can see the same scene.
42:30The footage from the car
42:31identified the man as Ian Bennett.
42:34Police dredged the canal and found a knife.
42:37The blade was heavily bent out of shape.
42:39The dash cam is actually what cements this case
42:42in terms of actually establishing
42:45that what we've got on the CCTV footage
42:47is Ian Bennett actually getting rid of evidence
42:51and his mother helping him.
42:54DNA on the knife matched both Kerry and Linda.
43:03Their life script and the account
43:05that they've developed between them straight away
43:07can be undermined by CCTV
43:11and also the dash cam footage
43:13from the mother's own car.
43:15You can clearly see that she was involved
43:17in the aftermath
43:18in terms of helping him
43:21to dispose of the knife.
43:24The dash cam footage gave police
43:26the evidence they needed.
43:28All the dash cam evidence
43:29that was collected
43:31alongside all the CCTV footage
43:34that the investigators had
43:35helped them build a very, very strong case
43:38against the suspect.
43:39Police now had enough to charge Ian with murder
43:49and arrest Ian's mother Linda
43:52for assisting an offender
43:53and perverting the course of justice.
43:55It's a really interesting question, isn't it?
44:00Whether you would help your own child
44:02cover up a crime.
44:04I think there's a lot of people
44:05who would say,
44:06of course I would.
44:07Of course I'd help my child
44:08either because I'd believe
44:09that they had to do it
44:10or I'd believe they were innocent
44:11or if I knew that they actually
44:13did go through with it
44:14I just wanted to keep them
44:15out of prison.
44:16Whereas other people
44:17would definitely say the opposite
44:19and say, no,
44:20I'd encourage my child
44:21to hand themselves in immediately.
44:22And I think it's
44:23one of those things
44:25that you probably just have
44:26absolutely no idea
44:29how you would react
44:30until it happens to you.
44:32If he's a coercive controller
44:36a control freak
44:38which it seems as if he was
44:40then he will have been
44:42manipulating and managing his mother.
44:45We also know that
44:47this is cyclical behaviour
44:49and he may have experienced it
44:52or seen it
44:53with his mother's partner
44:56may have been a husband
44:58may have been his father
44:59may have been a stepfather.
45:02In December 2021
45:05the case went to trial
45:07at Birmingham Crown Court.
45:09The jury took just two hours
45:11to find Ian guilty.
45:13The cameras were crucial
45:15to the conviction of the killer.
45:17There are so many opportunities
45:19for investigators
45:20to find evidence on video.
45:23Now we have evidence
45:24from mobile phones,
45:25body-worn cameras,
45:27dashcam vehicles,
45:29drone footage,
45:30aerial footage.
45:31Without all these
45:32multiple camera sources
45:33a lot of cases
45:34would be abandoned.
45:36Ian was sentenced
45:37to at least 25 years in prison.
45:41Linda was given three years.
45:44It was that crucial dashcam footage
45:47alongside the CCTV
45:48and all the other digital evidence
45:51that helped the investigators
45:52crack the case really quickly
45:54and it shows us
45:55and it shows us
45:55how collecting evidence
45:57from the various different
45:59digital sources
46:00can speed up a case significantly.
46:02and it shows us
