Man Drowns When Locals Dive for Money in Lake - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.

A young man’s body has been found after he drowned in a lake in India while diving for money. Denominations of five hundred and one thousand rupee bills amounting to a total of approximately 1 and a half lahks, or 150 thousand rupees, were mysteriously floating in the lake and surrounding wetlands. No one knows the source of the currency, but many people had gathered at the lake to get their hands on some of the floating money. After the drowning incident involving a man in his early twenties, local officials are discouraging people from entering the area in search of more floating rupees.

Witnesses claim that the young man was probably not a strong swimmer and fell victim to the rising water level of the lake that occurs after the area experiences intense monsoon rains.

"The currencies we have recovered yesterday look genuine. We are trying to find out their source but it's not an easy task as the wetland is spread over a huge area" said an official.
