00:00And the crowd wait and wonder whether Argentina can retain their world title with a team which has just three survivors from the one that played four years ago.
00:11They've had to make changes, as you were saying, because four players are suspended for disciplinary reasons.
00:19Right now, the faces and the names must be familiar.
00:27Oswaldo and Burruchaga, who scored the winner last time, will be in midfield.
00:33Maradona, who whistles as the crowd watch these pictures on the gigantic screens at either end of the stadium.
00:40He got the usual reception.
00:42And Bilardo, whose last match this is, in charge of Argentina.
00:49Either country here could, or one of them will, equal the record of Italy and Brazil and win the World Cup for the third time.
00:58West Germany with Bremer and Kohler and Algenthaler.
01:05All this is unchanged. It's when we get to the midfield that it's interesting.
01:09Franz Beckenbauer had two decisions to make.
01:11Two of the midfield positions are not that of Matthäus, but the others were in doubt.
01:16Kessler, again injured against England, got one vote.
01:19And Litvarski, 30 years old, got the other.
01:23And Klinsmann up front with Fuller.
01:29Franz Beckenbauer also steps down after tonight.
01:32There's talk of him going to the United States to take charge of their team in four years' time.
01:39Down on the substitutes' bench.
01:41Some of the suspended players are sitting there as well.
01:44But the main striker there is Balbo, number three.
01:48Calderon's been left out tonight as well.
01:50And so has Olaf Thöne of West Germany.
01:54And FIFA decided this time it should be the other way round.
01:59And the Argentines had to change.
02:02And in the early evening in Rome, with the floodlights on but still plenty of daylight,
02:10the World Cup final of 1990, the 14th, gets underway.
02:14And here's Litvarski for West Germany, looking for Fuller.
02:17And over goes Simon, the sweeper, number 20, who'll play right at the back for Argentina.
02:3119 in the cycling shorts is Rougerie from Real Madrid.
02:41Basualdo, number four.
02:53Forward run by Basualdo.
02:55Little flick for Maradona.
02:57And Hessler gets away for West Germany.
03:01Here's Klinsmann.
03:04Fuller's in the middle, so is Hessler.
03:06Offside flag is up.
03:07And it was interesting, Trevor, that when Maradona got the ball for the first time,
03:10it was Buchwalt who made the challenge.
03:16Fuller.
03:17It's a free kick to West Germany.
03:21Foul by Serizuela on Fuller.
03:25And it's given Buchwalt the chance to move forward.
03:28One of the best headers of the ball in the German team.
03:32Brehmer to swing in the free kick.
03:34Klinsmann's there as well.
03:35So is Alguenthaler.
03:43Klinsmann was there.
03:44Oh, and...
03:47Fuller.
03:49Tried to latch on to Klinsmann's flick.
03:52And it flew over.
03:56There's a bit of a fortunate escape there.
03:58Great cross, whipped in at pace.
04:00And really, the Argentine defenders...
04:05It's a compliment to Bobby Robson's team that West Germany had started in this final
04:08far better than they did against England.
04:13Hessler.
04:19Litvarski. Fuller.
04:20Litvarski.
04:21Good attempt.
04:27Litvarski puts his head up to the sky.
04:29Quite the cheer.
04:30Left it, didn't bother to go for it.
04:31But it was very close.
04:33Good ball by Hessler.
04:35Little layback.
04:36And there, Litvarski, a good curling shot.
04:39Wasn't that far over that angle of the goal.
04:44Thomas Hessler, very much involved there in the build-up.
04:46Down the left-hand side.
05:03Troglio.
05:06Borrachaga.
05:08Maradona's in there short.
05:09But again, the Germans whip it away.
05:13Bremer.
05:15They're not giving Argentina time to breathe.
05:17Bremer again.
05:21Fuller!
05:22Oh, it took the defender as well, I think.
05:26And Rudi Fuller has already been...
05:30so close.
05:35This is Bremer.
05:37And...
05:38Fuller, yes, it came off Ruggieri at the last.
05:48Mateus.
05:52Fuller!
05:55Well, any striker in the world would be pleased
05:57with the amount of service he's getting Trevor
05:59in the first 25 minutes.
06:01They're aiming for him all the time.
06:03Crosses are going in.
06:04And he just hasn't got the final touch up to now.
06:19Could Serizawa strike one, I wonder?
06:23Or will Maradona attempt the curler?
06:30They're signaling from the bench
06:32as to what they want them to do.
06:35Maradona!
06:36Over the top.
06:39Well, he jumped up in the air when he hit it,
06:41but it was far too high.
06:42It was never, as you can see, as it goes over the wall there.
06:45He got underneath it.
06:47No real pace.
06:48And Ilner didn't even have to make an attempt.
06:51And at the moment, that would have been a real travesty.
06:54There's Bilardo.
06:56Troglio.
07:00That's Waldo.
07:01Troglio.
07:02That's Waldo.
07:03Troglio.
07:07Di Zotti.
07:10That's Waldo.
07:14Oh, and very nearly a dodgy back pass.
07:20At least it gave the German goalkeeper something to do.
07:22Ilner, he hasn't had very much to occupy him in this first half,
07:26which is now in stoppage time.
07:32Mateus.
07:35Buchwald.
07:39Bremer.
07:41Buchwald.
07:50Free kick.
07:51Fuller was just holding his man off there, using his arms.
07:56There's a signal from Edgardo Prodisol,
07:58a 39-year-old doctor from Mexico City.
08:03It hasn't been much surgery needed in the first half.
08:07We haven't seen the trainer,
08:08so I wouldn't think he'll add on too much time.
08:13Most of the delays have been while they've been preparing
08:16to take free kicks, actually.
08:22And there it is.
08:24Half-time arrives in the 1990 World Cup final in Rome.
08:2845 minutes in which West Germany established
08:32a technical and a territorial supremacy,
08:34but couldn't convert that into goals.
08:36Argentina seemed happy to lie in wait.
08:39Maradona somewhat anonymous.
08:41And not too much to excite the 73,000 people
08:45inside the Olympic Stadium.
08:47Half-time in the World Cup final.
08:50West Germany nil, Argentina nil.
08:57And while that happened,
08:58I was also keeping my eye on the touchline
09:00because they're warming up number six Calderon as well.
09:04He's running up and down the track,
09:05so obviously Argentina see a change of tactics
09:08somewhere along the way here.
09:13And the newcomer, Monzon,
09:14has gone straight to Mark Klinsman
09:16in the role that Mark Klinsman has been given.
09:20And he's got the ball.
09:21He's got the ball.
09:22He's got the ball.
09:23He's got the ball.
09:24He's got the ball.
09:25He's got the ball.
09:26And he's got the ball
09:27in the role that Ruggeri has vacated.
09:36Hessler for West Germany meantime,
09:41Litvarski.
09:45And still.
09:47Litvarski, a lovely run, a good effort,
09:49and the best we've seen so far
09:52coming up to just 30 seconds.
09:56And the second half, Pierre Litvarski, at least managing there to attack from midfield.
10:10Came across the face of the Argentine defence, and the shot was just going away.
10:16It's about 30 yards out, so Goy Guichet will want some sort of protection.
10:21Referee got in the way a bit there as well, it was Troglia who's foul it was.
10:27Klinsman and Buchwald waiting on the far side as Bremer prepares to take it.
10:34Oh, and Berthold came in!
10:37And the extra man almost found out the Argentinians.
10:42The right back had sneaked in beyond everybody else, Thomas Berthold.
10:47And not a bad effort at all as the left back, Bremer, takes the kick.
10:51The strikers take the defenders away.
10:53And on the bounce, Berthold just clears the crossbar.
10:58Thumbs up he's done it really so far.
11:00Getting forward, he's had two or three poor crosses.
11:02That one, not easy to head on target because it bounced in front of him.
11:06But the classic rule is to head down and he got underneath it and went over the crossbar.
11:11Anything on target there so close in must have had a chance of flying in.
11:17Oswaldo for Argentina, tackled by Hessler.
11:21And West Germany start the second half in much the same manner as the first.
11:25Pushing forward, foul.
11:27That's the man who's just come on, Monzon, who fouled Rudy Fuller.
11:46Oh, they got two free this time and the flag stayed down and they still couldn't finish.
12:01And Rudy Fuller is having a bit of a nightmare tonight.
12:05As an attacker who's had some excellent service into him.
12:09But has failed to produce his usual devastating finish.
12:17Oswaldo, Maradona.
12:22But they surrounded him again.
12:24Litvarski got the touch to Hessler.
12:26This is Mateus.
12:27Klinsmann's made good space.
12:29Vuller's made his way into the penalty area.
12:31That's Klinsmann's cross.
12:33Vuller bumping and barging, didn't get anywhere near it.
12:39And it's still Vuller.
12:40And it's Litvarski.
12:42And he's curled it when Klinsmann on the far post was screaming for a cross.
12:47I think he's continued screaming to let Litvarski know what he thought of it as well.
12:51There's no way really in that range he's going to curl it in.
12:54And as you can see, Vuller wins possession.
12:57Plays it in to Litvarski.
12:59He looks up and I'm sure he would have seen Klinsmann with his hands up at that stage.
13:03And you see Klinsmann there, throwing his hand towards Litvarski.
13:07Saying I was in space, which he was.
13:10I haven't seen a card come out.
13:12And Mateus takes the free quickly to Berthold.
13:15Mateus again.
13:21And Algenthaler is onside.
13:23A chance for Germany.
13:25Oh, he's brought down.
13:26Penalty.
13:27Was it?
13:28Or did the referee play on?
13:30In which case it was nearly an own goal, but it wasn't.
13:35They're screaming for a flag in the first place, the Argentines.
13:39But Algenthaler was given onside.
13:41As he tried to go around, the last man, or the goalkeeper, was he brought down.
13:49Well, it was nearly an own goal then by Troglio, I think.
13:53There was a man on the line to save it.
13:55But the debate there is double-edged.
13:58Was there or not, should there have been an offside?
14:00Should there have been a penalty?
14:02That's possibly the greatest moment for discussion that we've had so far in this World Cup final.
14:10And it came up to 30 minutes of the second half.
14:12Calderon for Argentina.
14:22Trevor.
14:23Trevor.
14:38And they've fooled them.
14:39Bremer with the shot.
14:40And Gochea had to scramble down.
14:43And there was real variety in that free kick.
14:47As everybody packed into the penalty area, West Germany came up with something fresh.
14:52Corner now.
14:54To be taken by Litvarski.
15:05Baird holds up.
15:06Algenthaler.
15:07Back heel from him.
15:10Maradona's back there.
15:11Oh, he's got one in the face.
15:12Or so he would appear to have had.
15:16He's gone down holding his head.
15:17Maradona.
15:18Play has gone on.
15:19The referee didn't see it, I don't think.
15:22Mateusz.
15:24Oh, he has now.
15:25And the Germans have sportingly kicked the ball out.
15:28Lothar Mateusz, one number ten.
15:30Kicked the ball out to his opposite number.
15:33And I don't know whether that was an elbow by mistake.
15:37Because Maradona appeared to be exonerating Rudy Fuller.
15:44I think he was soon recovered considering he was rolling around.
15:47Here you see here.
15:48Just gets a little touch there.
15:50Almost just the fend off.
15:52West Germany and one for Argentina.
15:54Which gives you some idea of how the game has gone.
16:06Mateusz for West Germany.
16:09Klinsmann.
16:10Fuller and Litvarski waiting in the middle.
16:11And Klinsmann gets brought crashing down.
16:17This is going to be...
16:18Oh, it's red.
16:21Monzon.
16:24Is off.
16:31It's number fifteen.
16:33Pedro Monzon, the substitute.
16:35Who has dived in on Klinsmann.
16:37And it's his first defence but he's gone.
16:41Red card in the World Cup final.
16:43The first time it's ever happened.
16:51But it was a diabolical tackle I have to say.
16:55And the Mexican referee showed the red card.
17:00Maradona predictably has come to protest.
17:04Presumably to say that that tackle on Klinsmann was Monzon's first defence.
17:10And we have high drama here in Rome.
17:13Well that...
17:15He definitely went for the man and not the ball.
17:17The German player rolled over as you would expect.
17:20And the referee who had a little bit of time to think about it.
17:22He had to run across about 30 or 40 yards.
17:26Took out the red card.
17:27Having said that, Monzon is still on the pitch at the moment.
17:40Klinsmann gets up.
17:42There is Monzon.
17:43I think he's reluctant to compete.
17:45Monzon, I think he's reluctant to compete.
17:47Deciding he's got to go.
17:48It was a very bad tackle.
17:50I'm not sure whether Klinsmann injured himself in the first tackle.
17:53Or when he rolled over.
17:55Right up in the air again.
17:56When he realised he'd got brought down.
17:58He did make a meal of it to say the least.
18:00But there he goes, Monzon.
18:03Argentina are down to 10 men.
18:08Pedro Monzon, who only came on at half time as a substitute.
18:12Has been sent off the field.
18:15First man ever to be sent off in a World Cup final.
18:20And Bilardo now, having had four players suspended.
18:23Now loses another one.
18:30And the penalty area is packed.
18:31As West Germany prepare to take the free kick.
18:34Matheus is going to deliver it.
18:41It's been cleared by Lorenzo.
18:43As far as Andy Bremer.
18:46And he's probably had the best two shots of the night.
18:48The left back.
18:55He is a world class player.
18:57There's no doubt about that.
18:58Whipped in, half cleared.
19:00And he can hit the ball with either foot.
19:02This time it's a right footer.
19:03Just past the post.
19:06And volleyed forward by Reuter.
19:08And they've got three on here, the Germans.
19:10Kessler's first touch.
19:12Couldn't quite bring the ball under control.
19:14Otherwise, there was a great chance in prospect.
19:18As Argentina had to hurry back from the corner.
19:22Matheus.
19:24Fuller.
19:26Fuller is brought down.
19:27Penalty!
19:29A penalty to West Germany in the World Cup final.
19:33With seven minutes to go.
19:36And the Argentines barge the referee.
19:38And there's going to be cards out here.
19:40Yellow immediately, I think, for Troglio.
19:4221.
19:43Maradona in the thick of it.
19:44And the goalkeeper.
19:45And they've lost their heads completely.
19:48The German flags are waved.
19:50Rudi Fuller.
19:51Latches on to a ball.
19:53Rolled into him by Matheus.
19:56And the leg went out.
19:58Völler went over.
20:00A penalty has been given.
20:01The yellow card has been shown to Troglio at least.
20:05And the World Cup, which seems to revolve around penalty kicks,
20:09could be decided with one in normal play.
20:14And what a responsibility for the man who has to take it.
20:22Matheus took one earlier in the tournament.
20:25But Bremer is the player who has gone nearest to the penalty spot.
20:29And still Maradona pursues the argument.
20:32And another booking, I think, almost certainly.
20:35It may even have been Maradona.
20:38And the behaviour of the South Americans, quite appalling.
20:41Whatever they think of the decision,
20:43they should get out of the way and let the kick be taken.
20:47They've made no friends here at all, the world champions.
20:52It's quite unnecessary that this should be prolonged.
20:58And it's going to be Andy Bremer
21:02who has placed the ball.
21:05Guy Kutcher, who's been a hero on penalty kicks in the last two rounds,
21:09now has to face perhaps the most important one of all.
21:14It's Bremer for West Germany with the penalty.
21:26And is that the goal that wins the World Cup?
21:31Andy Bremer with five minutes to go.
21:37And West Germany are on the verge of winning the World Championship.
21:45Franz Beckenbauer is minutes away from a great achievement.
21:51And Argentina are quite rightly and properly punished
21:55for a performance
21:58and an incident from which they take no credit whatsoever.
22:02Bremer rolled that just inside the post.
22:05It was a good thing it was in the corner
22:07because the goalkeeper went the right way.
22:11Yes, it was what you'd call a teaser, wasn't it?
22:13He didn't hit it well and it was so far in the corner
22:16that the goalkeeper couldn't get to it.
22:17No, it was very justice really done.
22:20The penalty decision, a questionable one really.
22:22I think Rudy Vardy was definitely waiting
22:25for the half challenge from the defender.
22:27He couldn't really get the ball,
22:28but I don't think he really made contact with either of his ankles,
22:31but he went down and he got the pen.
22:36So, as you say, Argentina punished rightly so
22:40because they almost attack against defence this second half.
22:43Great ball from Matheus through to Völler to get the penalty
22:47in a similar position, wasn't it, to the one Paul Gascoigne gave away
22:50where the forward is waiting for the challenge
22:52and then he's going to go down.
22:56But wait, Maradona looks for Di Zotti,
23:01but the player's already been pulled back.
23:09Oh, look at that, Di Zotti on Kola.
23:12This is disgraceful by him.
23:14He's off, the second sending off.
23:18Di Zotti is dismissed.
23:19Oh, and I think a referee has been not struck.
23:24Oh, look at this.
23:25The referee has been physically manhandled by four players.
23:29And if Argentina continue this,
23:31FIFA will have to ban them from the next World Cup, surely.
23:34You can't have this in the final.
23:43The yellow card to Maradona.
23:47But the red card has gone to Di Zotti.
23:54And his world is in tatters now.
23:57And his team have let themselves down so badly.
24:01You really can't find words to express
24:03how they've spoiled what's supposed to be the great showpiece.
24:06Kola tried to take the ball away,
24:08Di Zotti pulled him round the neck,
24:10put him on the ground,
24:12and he would say, well, was that a sending off offence?
24:15It was petulant, but the red card came out
24:19and the way Argentina reacted again will go against them.
24:24There are two minutes to go.
24:28Kola said he was struck in the face.
24:30There'll be a lot of talk about
24:31whether the Germans overreacted on a lot of these things.
24:34But the fact of the matter is
24:37that Argentina are down to nine men
24:41because Di Zotti has gone,
24:43Hansson went earlier,
24:44the Germans have been told to sit down on the bench.
24:47The referees run forward.
24:53And Maradona's in there.
24:55And so are the Germans,
24:56and they might just break again with Hessler.
24:59And onside, Matthäus.
25:02And can they finish it in style? Jürgen Klinsmann.
25:06Oh, pity he couldn't.
25:08We would have had something to remember then
25:10if he could have followed that one in the roof of the net.
25:13But it may have wasted a few valuable seconds for the Germans
25:16as the ball is retrieved.
25:17Trevor Brooking.
25:18Well, as you say, the game tarnished,
25:21and the world game tarnished, really,
25:23by the spectre of these last few minutes.
25:26As you say, the Germans did make a little bit of a meal of it.
25:28But Di Zotti, if you...
25:30Most managers will tell their players,
25:32if you touch or handle somebody else,
25:34you're going to be in trouble with the referee.
25:36And there he is now.
25:37Argentina down to nine men.
25:42And Germany really ought to make the extra two men tell,
25:45to stay on the break.
25:46This is Matthäus.
25:51Brehme.
25:53Number eight, Hessler.
25:55Völler in the middle, so is Klinsmann.
25:59Hessler couldn't hardly try to square it,
26:01and the one defender who could have stopped it got in the way.
26:07Well, they're looking at their watches
26:09down on the West German bench.
26:12Because we're in the second minute of stoppage time.
26:15Beckenbauer, who played in a World Cup winning team,
26:18looks now like equaling the record of Mario Zagallo of Brazil
26:22and managing one as well.
26:28And Condesal of Mexico,
26:29who's had a real handful to deal with tonight,
26:32and I would say hasn't done too badly in the circumstances,
26:36might well be advised to end this as soon as he can.
26:45Two men are over.
26:46The Germans should be all right.
26:48Hessler. Matthäus.
26:50Litbarski.
26:55Brehme.
26:56And still they wait in the middle.
26:57Völler and Klinsmann.
27:02Matthäus.
27:06They can go back to the goalkeeper if they want.
27:11Somebody from FIFA were telling me this afternoon
27:13Argentina have booked their flight back straight tonight,
27:16which was a bit of a problem in the organisation.
27:18I think they must have known what their performance was going to be.
27:21They leave at 4.30 in the morning.
27:23I don't think there'll be too many people to see them off after this.
27:26Völler.
27:29Litbarski.
27:33I don't know where these referees find the stoppage time from sometimes.
27:36I really don't.
27:40FIFA criticised the referee in the semi-final.
27:42He played eight minutes overtime at one point.
27:44And there it is!
27:45West Germany win the World Cup for the third time
27:49and equal the record of Italy and Brazil.
27:54They take the championship away from Argentina.
27:58And Franz Beckenbauer becomes the second man
28:00to play in and manage a World Cup winning team.
28:06The German supporters celebrate.
28:08And after what has to go down as a disappointing final
28:13then the result has to be seen to be right by the watching world.
28:18West Germany made all the running and there's trouble again on the pitch.
28:21The referee was surrounded and pushed and shoved by Argentine players
28:25and the inquiry into this match, I believe, will go on for quite some time.
28:29FIFA will have to do something about it
28:31because South American players have manhandled the officials
28:35and Carlos Bilardo's career has ended in disgrace, really, for his team
28:41while Beckenbauer's has ended in ecstasy.
28:47And the scenes on the pitch are quite extraordinary.
28:50There's celebration on one side
28:52and there's anger and resentment and hostility on the other.
28:57One or two of the Argentines are now coming back
29:00and the mood seems to be calming down.
29:03But quite what that's done for the game of football
29:05I'm not entirely sure.
29:07It would be too early to judge.
29:10The game itself was all West Germanies from the first whistle.
29:14They made opportunity and Maradona had none.
29:31The chances were all at one end
29:35and the lack of ambition on the part of the ex-world champions was quite startling.
29:41They finished the match with nine men and very few friends.
29:46But for the West Germans, who from the start of this tournament
29:49and I saw their first match against Yugoslavia
29:51have by and large tried to attack, tried to show the better side of the game.
29:56They have been involved in one or two unsavoury incidents
29:59but their supporters will feel that they've proved again
30:02having played in five of the last seven World Cup finals
30:05and now won it three times, Trevor Brooking
30:07that on the night certainly the right team won.
30:11Well, you're just relieved really that it is West Germany.
30:15It's a shame for the game that they didn't get the goal early in the match
30:18and then Argentina hopefully would have had to come out.
30:21But really, especially when they lost the first man send-off
30:24they just sat back with their ten men
30:26and their ten men were almost waiting for, in fact, the penalties to come in.
30:30And here you see that Wolle, in fact, just goes in to defend
30:34but you can see Wolle is already going for the dive.
30:37Zenzini it was who was tackling.
30:38He didn't really need to make the tackle.
30:40He could have just held off, but he tried to make it.
30:43You see, he stretches trying to get the touch
30:46but nothing really has happened to Wolle.
30:48But as soon as he's felt somebody making a challenge
30:51he's dived full length and he's got the penalty that's won them World Cup.
30:55Yes, well that's obviously what angered Argentina
30:58but the fact of the matter remains that the World Cup
31:01seems to have revolved around penalty kicks in some shape or form.
31:07And it has been won by such a kick
31:12but at least it was in normal play and not in a penalty shoot-out.
31:15We have to be grateful for that.
31:18Three.
31:21Three.
31:23West Germany, the world champions.
31:25They will play in the United States in 1994 without having to qualify.
31:31Argentina will go home
31:34and face, I would imagine, quite an inquiry.
31:39And I just wonder, a man who believes deeply in the spirit of the game
31:42and has seen many World Cup matches and played in the final himself
31:45I just wonder what Bobby Charlton feels about the way that match went in the second half.
31:52Well, I'm sorry to say that it's deteriorated the way that I thought it might.
31:56When the Argentines lose the cool, they certainly lose it completely.
32:01And of course they want to play the game to their rules and nobody else's.
32:04They don't accept referees' decisions.
32:06Any sort of foul, it doesn't matter what it's like.
32:09If it's going to stop them scoring a goal, it doesn't matter.
32:12What you see today is the worst side of South American football.
32:15It's disastrous for them because people actually look at them with great skill and with great affection.
32:20But this is the worst side that we're seeing now.
32:22And as many neutral people throughout the game would be absolutely delighted
32:26that the fairest and the best team has won.
32:28They have, and the Argentinians will have to go back and lick their wounds.
32:32But I think that they'll have to have some deep thinking about
32:35whether they're going to come back to this country again
32:37and perform in the way that they have this time.
32:40You can hear now the whistles from behind.
32:42People are outraged at the way that they've played this match.
32:45Not so much that they've been unadventurous in the way they've played,
32:49but they've been unceremonious in their tackling.
32:51They've not accepted the referees.
32:53In fact, they've physically threatened the referee.
32:55And I think it's an absolute disgrace.
32:57I'm very pleased that the German side have won
33:00because it reflects very badly on our game when we see football played like this.
33:05I'm terribly disappointed.
33:06Argentina, fine history of playing football.
33:09The only time they've ever done well is really when they've played fairly
33:14and they've tried to play in conformity with the rules of the game.
33:17Unfortunately, I'm very disappointed in them.
33:19Nevertheless, congratulations to the Germans.
33:21At least they kept their cool.
33:22They played methodical football.
33:24And for the possession that they had and the skill that they showed,
33:27it's right that they should have won.
33:31Thank you very much, Bobby, for those thoughts.
33:34And I think they reflect what a lot of people at home will be thinking too.
33:40And Maradona's in tears.
33:44And there'll be a few shed for world football tonight after the way his team behaved.
33:49He, I must say, was not one of the guilty members.
33:51That point should be made.
33:53Although he was booked at the end for protesting,
33:55the two players who were sent off and those who charged the referee,
33:59and indeed there may even be charges from FIFA
34:02when all this is examined again on video.
34:04But there's the face of a man who came here as the outstanding footballer in the world
34:10and goes home crying his eyes out.
34:17The Germans, meantime, are full of smiles.
34:22They reversed the result of four years ago in Mexico City
34:28when they lost to Argentina 3-2.
34:33And Franz Beckenbauer ends his six-year campaign as the West German coach in triumph
34:46with Matthias on the left there, number 10,
34:49in with a very good chance of being voted the outstanding player of the World Cup.
34:53There is a prize for that.
34:55And he was leading certainly until a few days ago.
34:59Prior to the penalty being given,
35:02it may be worth reflecting that the Germans had an earlier shout with Algenthaler,
35:06but that's history now.
35:08And as the president of FIFA, Yao Haberland, in the centre there,
35:13waits to present the trophy.
35:19The West Germans start to sing and the Argentines hang their heads.
35:29Lothar Matthias, for me, one of the best players of this World Cup,
35:36in which perhaps there weren't as many outstanding performers as normal,
35:40but he kept up a very high standard.
35:44He was in the squad in 1982, he played in 1986, he's the captain in 1990.
35:50And Lothar Matthias goes forward to receive the World Cup on behalf of West Germany.
35:58Who win the championship for the third time.
36:08And join Italy and Brazil as the leaders in World Cup football.
36:20Winners' medals being handed out.
36:22The losers, as Trevor said, get silver.
36:25England last night in Italy got bronze, but here are the gold medals
36:29being presented to Jürgen Klinsmann and the other West German players.
36:32Rudi Völler, his striking partner, is just behind him.
36:36Plays his club football here in Rome.
36:38And he was the player who earned the penalty
36:42with which West Germany had won the 14th World Cup.
36:47And now I'm pleased to say the mood in the stadium has got a lot calmer.
36:52And a great deal more benevolent than it was just a few minutes ago when that match was ending.
37:02This is the climax to a month of football, 52 matches.
37:09Some quite good, some not so good.
37:12Wouldn't have called it a vintage World Cup, but at the end there has to be a winner.
37:18And I don't think too many people are going to argue about West Germany,
37:23although one reflects again just how close England were to putting them out in the semi-final.
37:36The floodlit scene from the sky of the Olympic Stadium in Rome,
37:40where the World Cup draws to a conclusion for another couple of years
37:50until the qualifying matches start for 1994.
37:55When, as I say, West Germany, as of right, will play in the United States.
37:59And I just wonder whether they might play against the United States team managed by Franz Beckenbauer.
38:05What a career he's had.
