Ivanka Trump has reportedly used a private email account to correspond with members of her father’s administration.
According to Newsweek, which broke the story based on documents acquired by American Oversight through the Freedom of Information Act, Trump, who was not an official government employee at the time, used the account in late February to write to Linda McMahon who oversees the Small Business Administration.
The first daughter, said to have referred to herself as “Ivanka Kushner,” reportedly asked McMahon about potential opportunities to work together on “women’s entrepreneurship” issues.
News about this account was made public soon after her husband Jared Kushner was also found to have used a non-government email address to discuss business with top White House officials including former chief of staff Reince Priebus and National Economic Council director Gary Cohn, notes Politico.
Nevertheless, Kushner’s attorney Abbe Lowell has downplayed the account, saying it contained “fewer than 100 emails” which were “usually forwarded news articles or political commentary.”
“All non-personal emails were forwarded to his official address,” Lowell has also said.
The use of personal accounts by government officials has drawn extra scrutiny since President Trump continually attacked Hillary Clinton over her handling of emails during the 2016 campaign.
