00:32:02 As a matter of fact, one, there was a leader of the ghetto,
00:32:06 a drug dealer, gangbanger, all of that,
00:32:08 and he leads one of the prominent ghettos.
00:32:11 He actually came to the outreach that we had,
00:32:15 heard the gospel, and got saved.
00:32:18 His story is absolutely amazing.
00:32:20 He was just in prison several months ago,
00:32:22 and a pastor in prison was ministering to him,
00:32:25 and he saw a vision that he needed to get out of the ghetto.
00:32:29 He heard about the ministry that was coming to town,
00:32:32 and he came, got saved, and he got water baptized,
00:32:36 and now he's wanting to start a business
00:32:38 with clothes and shoes.
00:32:40 People, church, you have helped transform lives
00:32:44 all the way here in Sierra Leone.
00:32:46 So I want to say thank you for your support.

00:40:12 We're in the series about the Holy Spirit.
00:40:16 Week three, we've got several more weeks to go
00:40:19 in this series and I'm excited about
00:40:22 what God is already doing.
00:40:24 You know, I think about me and Tiffany,
00:40:26 we have so many differences.
00:40:28 One of the differences is I like my coffee hot,
00:40:33 like real hot.
00:40:36 When I drink coffee, I want it to be hot.
00:40:39 So I drink it in the first 10 minutes.
00:40:41 Anybody else like your pasta, you like your coffee hot?
00:40:42 You know, now who's like Tiffany?
00:40:45 You drink your coffee half the day.
00:40:47 Just, you get a cup of coffee, you just,
00:40:49 I wanna pray for you today.
00:40:51 To me, that's just nasty.
00:40:53 I watch Tiffany, she'll be drinking coffee,
00:40:55 got the same cup of coffee two, three hours later,
00:40:58 still sipping on it.
00:40:59 I'm like, that's some nasty, lukewarm,
00:41:02 I don't know, that's not coffee now.
00:41:04 I don't know, that's an ice latte
00:41:06 you think you've been sitting so long, you know.
00:41:08 But she loves it in there.
00:41:09 But I'm the exact opposite when it comes to my tea.
00:41:12 When I have iced tea, I like my iced tea with a lot of ice.
00:41:15 Anybody like me, I like iced tea with ice.
00:41:17 If you don't give me enough ice, I will nicely ask you,
00:41:20 hey, can you bring me a side of ice in another cup?
00:41:23 'Cause I want my coffee hot and I want my iced tea cold.
00:41:28 I do not like lukewarm and neither does God.
00:41:32 And so God says in his word in Revelations chapter three,
00:41:38 and verse number 15, Jesus says,
00:41:40 I know your deeds that you are neither cold nor hot.
00:41:43 I wish you were either one or the other.
00:41:46 So because you are lukewarm,
00:41:49 because you like your coffee like Tiffany,
00:41:52 your spiritual life is lukewarm, neither hot nor cold,
00:41:57 I'm about to spit you out of my mouth.
00:42:02 And John is riding to the church in a city called Laodicea.
00:42:07 And the church had become lukewarm.
00:42:10 They had lost their passion for God.
00:42:13 You say, pastor, what does it mean to be lukewarm?
00:42:16 It's when someone becomes indifferent.
00:42:18 They have lost their enthusiasm.
00:42:21 They've lost their passion.
00:42:23 They've lost their conviction.
00:42:25 They're stagnant.
00:42:26 They're just going through the motions
00:42:29 of church and religiosity.
00:42:33 And here's the thing, no one plans to become lukewarm.
00:42:37 But somehow, somewhere along the way,
00:42:41 they've stopped pursuing God,
00:42:43 that they've stopped staying close to the Lord,
00:42:45 that they've stopped taking spiritual next steps.
00:42:50 To avoid lukewarmness,
00:42:52 you have to keep taking spiritual next steps.
00:42:57 When you stop taking spiritual next steps, church,
00:43:01 hear me, you become a prime candidate for lukewarmness.
00:43:06 The Christian life is always a life of spiritual next steps.
00:43:11 And John tells the church of Laodicea
00:43:15 how to break out of the bondage of lukewarmness.
00:43:19 And the way out of lukewarmness
00:43:23 is to start taking spiritual next steps.
00:43:27 Notice what he says when he teaches them
00:43:29 how to break out of lukewarmness
00:43:30 in Revelations chapter three and verse number 20.
00:43:33 These are the words of Jesus.
00:43:34 Here he says, "Here I am.
00:43:36 "I stand at the door and knock at the heart
00:43:39 "of the lukewarm believer.
00:43:40 "If anyone hears my voice and opens the door,
00:43:45 "I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me."
00:43:49 Jesus said, "You've stopped opening your spiritual doors.
00:43:54 "You've pushed God away.
00:43:56 "You've closed out the Lord,
00:43:58 "and you've stopped taking spiritual next steps.
00:44:02 "And whenever you stop taking spiritual next steps,
00:44:07 "you will drift in to lukewarmness."
00:44:12 Hebrews says this in Hebrews chapter six, verse 11,
00:44:15 number 11 and 12.
00:44:16 "Our great desire is that you will keep on loving others
00:44:19 "as long as life lasts."
00:44:21 Keep loving or keep taking spiritual next steps
00:44:24 in order to make certain
00:44:26 that what you hope for will come true.
00:44:29 "Then you will not become spiritually, spiritually dull,
00:44:33 "and indifferent or lukewarm.
00:44:35 "Instead, you will follow the example of those
00:44:37 "who are going to inherit God's promises
00:44:41 "because of their faith and endurance."
00:44:44 Take the next step and keep on loving people,
00:44:49 or you will slip into lukewarmness.
00:44:53 You'll become spiritually dull.
00:44:55 You'll become indifferent.
00:44:57 There's always a next step to take with the Lord.
00:45:02 And if you're not stepping forward,
00:45:05 you're slipping backwards.
00:45:08 Don't ever buy into the lie that you've arrived spiritually.
00:45:13 Can you imagine parents having a little baby?
00:45:17 That little baby's growing up,
00:45:19 and little baby is now 11, 12 months old,
00:45:23 and the baby starts to take their first steps.
00:45:27 And the little baby walks three or four steps,
00:45:30 and the parents have their video camera ready.
00:45:32 They catch the baby on the camera, on their phone,
00:45:36 and they capture the moment,
00:45:37 and they grab the little baby and say,
00:45:38 "Way to go, you did it!
00:45:41 "You've arrived, you walked!
00:45:44 "Now sit on the couch, don't walk no more.
00:45:46 "We gotta keep you safe!"
00:45:47 That sounds crazy.
00:45:51 But a lot of Christians,
00:45:53 that's how they live their journey with Christ.
00:45:56 They get to a place where they think
00:45:57 they've arrived spiritually,
00:45:59 and they stop taking spiritual next steps.
00:46:02 And whether you've been a Christian for a week,
00:46:04 for a month, for five years, or for 50 years,
00:46:08 there's always a next step to take.
00:46:11 You have to keep stepping forward,
00:46:13 or you will start slipping backwards.
00:46:19 There's always a next step to take
00:46:22 in your journey with Christ.
00:46:23 The first step is the step of salvation.
00:46:26 Gotta take that step.
00:46:28 Then there's the step of being water baptized.
00:46:32 And August the 6th,
00:46:34 we're gonna be baptizing people in water.
00:46:36 If you haven't taken that next step spiritually,
00:46:38 get in the lobby and get signed up.
00:46:40 There's a baptismal table in the lobby,

00:46:46 But take that next step, don't delay.
00:46:49 There's the step of being baptized in the Holy Spirit,
00:46:52 the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
00:46:54 There's the step of being continually filled
00:46:56 with the Holy Spirit.
00:46:58 There's the step of growing in the fruit of the Spirit.
00:47:01 There's the step of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
00:47:05 There's the step of daily prayer and Bible reading.
00:47:08 I like to call this the first 15.
00:47:10 Give God the first 15 minutes of every day,
00:47:14 and watch how it changes your life.
00:47:17 It's a step.
00:47:18 Keep reading your Bible.
00:47:19 Keep praying every single day.
00:47:20 There's the step of obeying God's word.
00:47:23 There's the step of growing in sanctification.
00:47:26 There's the step of stepping out in faith.
00:47:29 There's the step of serving others.
00:47:33 Let me pause and just say,
00:47:34 if you're not serving on the Dream Team,
00:47:38 would you start?
00:47:39 We need you.
00:47:41 The church is growing.
00:47:43 We are reaching people.
00:47:44 We're getting ready to launch a new location.
00:47:47 We need more people serving in all the various ministries
00:47:50 here at People's Church.
00:47:52 And actually, there's a table in the lobby
00:47:54 for you to sign up today to serve.
00:47:57 Hey, let's not be spectators.
00:47:59 Let's be participators and see more changed lives together.
00:48:04 That's a spiritual next step.
00:48:06 There's the step of tithing and giving.
00:48:09 And if you're not a tither,
00:48:10 that's 10% of your income that you give to the Lord
00:48:13 back to the local church.
00:48:14 Become a tither, or maybe you're used to tithe
00:48:16 and used to give to dream builders.
00:48:18 Well, don't be used to.
00:48:19 Come on, take that step and start tithing again.
00:48:21 There's the step of small group,
00:48:24 of stepping into a small group.
00:48:25 And September the 10th,
00:48:27 we're launching our fall semester of small groups.
00:48:30 Get in a small group.
00:48:32 Lead a small group.
00:48:35 But today, what I wanna do
00:48:36 is I wanna focus on that step number three,
00:48:39 being baptized in the Holy Spirit.
00:48:43 The baptism of the Holy Spirit
00:48:45 is a second experience after salvation.
00:48:49 And Jesus wants his disciples,
00:48:52 his followers to be baptized in the Holy Spirit.
00:48:57 And in Acts, we see in chapter one
00:49:03 that Jesus quoted what John the Baptist said
00:49:07 in Matthew chapter 11.
00:49:08 For you students who love the Bible,
00:49:11 Jesus quotes John the Baptist.
00:49:13 And he says in Acts chapter one, verse four and five,
00:49:15 on one occasion, while he was eating with them,
00:49:18 he gave them this command,
00:49:20 do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift
00:49:22 my father promised.
00:49:24 And the Holy Spirit is a gift.
00:49:26 That's different from the gifts of the Spirit,
00:49:29 but the Holy Spirit is a gift that the Father gives us,
00:49:31 which you have heard me speak about.
00:49:34 For John baptized with water,
00:49:35 but in a few days you will be,
00:49:37 here's the terminology,
00:49:38 baptized with the Holy Spirit.
00:49:43 And this is a second experience
00:49:45 the disciples had with the Holy Spirit.
00:49:48 This wasn't when the disciples were sealed
00:49:51 with the Holy Spirit for salvation.
00:49:53 It is where they were filled with the Holy Spirit
00:49:55 for power to be a witness.
00:49:58 Let's look at God's word, Acts one, verse eight.
00:50:00 But you will receive power
00:50:03 when the Holy Spirit comes on you,
00:50:05 and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem
00:50:08 and in all Judea and Samaria
00:50:11 and to the ends of the earth.
00:50:14 Notice Jesus said the Holy Spirit comes on you,
00:50:18 not just in you.
00:50:19 You see, at salvation, the Holy Spirit comes in you,
00:50:23 but the baptism of the Holy Spirit is about immersion.
00:50:27 And that word baptism literally means to be immersed.
00:50:30 That's why we put people all the way under the water,
00:50:33 that word baptism, to be immersed.
00:50:35 And the scripture says,
00:50:36 God wants to immerse you in the Holy Spirit.
00:50:39 He wants to fill you to overflowing with the Holy Spirit.
00:50:44 Let me illustrate this to help you better understand
00:50:48 biblical theology.
00:50:50 So when you give your heart to Jesus,
00:50:54 immediately when you give your heart to Jesus,
00:50:56 the Holy Spirit comes to live inside of you.
00:50:59 So you have the Holy Spirit in you.
00:51:04 So if you're a Christian, the Spirit of God is in you.
00:51:07 But the baptism of the Holy Spirit is a second experience
00:51:12 where you don't just have the Holy Spirit in you,
00:51:13 but you're filled to overflowing.
00:51:16 And God wants to baptize you in the Holy Spirit.
00:51:19 And this second experience is,
00:51:21 you're just filled to overflowing.
00:51:23 Anybody believe you ought to be filled to overflowing
00:51:26 with the Holy Spirit?
00:51:27 And then you can get refilled with the Holy Spirit.
00:51:29 And the Holy Spirit will fill you just more.
00:51:31 And ask God to fill you more with the Holy Spirit.
00:51:33 And your life will just fill more with the Holy Spirit.
00:51:36 The baptism of the Holy Spirit is not about salvation.
00:51:40 It's about being filled to overflowing
00:51:43 with the power of the Holy Spirit,
00:51:45 so that your life can be a witness for Jesus.
00:51:49 I believe the disciples received salvation
00:51:53 and the Holy Spirit that came to live inside of them
00:51:56 in John chapter 20, after Jesus died on the cross
00:52:00 and was resurrected from the dead.
00:52:02 Let me show this to you, John 20, verse 21 and 22.
00:52:05 Again, Jesus said, "Peace be with you.
00:52:10 "As the Father has sent me, I am sending you."
00:52:13 And with that, he breathed on them and said,
00:52:18 "Receive the Holy Spirit."
00:52:21 I do not believe Jesus just wanted them to smell his breath.
00:52:25 (congregation laughing)
00:52:26 I believe something spiritual transpired here.
00:52:29 'Cause Jesus had already died on the cross.
00:52:31 He had already been resurrected from the dead
00:52:34 when he said, "Receive the Holy Spirit."
00:52:36 And I believe this was the disciples' salvation experience.
00:52:40 They had already believed in Jesus as the Son of God.
00:52:44 So when Jesus said, "Receive the Holy Spirit,"
00:52:46 the Spirit of God came to live inside of those disciples.
00:52:51 And so Acts 2 wasn't their salvation experience.
00:52:55 It was the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
00:52:58 Salvation is about becoming a child of God.
00:53:01 It's about being sealed with the Holy Spirit.
00:53:04 It's about securing your place in heaven.
00:53:07 But the baptism of the Holy Spirit, it's not about heaven.
00:53:10 According to Acts 1:8, this is about power to be a witness,
00:53:15 not sealed with the Holy Spirit for salvation,
00:53:19 but filled with the Holy Spirit for power to be a witness.
00:53:24 Let's read about this experience in Acts 2.
00:53:27 And let's pick up reading in verse number one.
00:53:31 When the day of Pentecost came,
00:53:33 they were all together in one place.
00:53:36 All the believers, all the followers of Jesus
00:53:38 were together in one place.
00:53:40 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind
00:53:43 came from heaven and filled the whole house
00:53:45 where they were sitting.
00:53:47 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire
00:53:49 that separated and came to rest on each of them.
00:53:52 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit
00:53:54 and began to speak in other tongues
00:53:56 as the Spirit enabled them.
00:53:58 They were filled to overflowing with the Holy Spirit,
00:54:02 not sealed with the Spirit for salvation,
00:54:06 but being filled with the Spirit for power to be a witness.
00:54:11 And what confuses some people isn't being filled
00:54:15 with the power of the Holy Spirit to be a witness,
00:54:19 it's the tongues part that confuses people.
00:54:22 And I don't want my church family to be confused.
00:54:26 So let me help you better understand
00:54:28 this whole thing called tongues.
00:54:31 Just look at your neighbor and say,
00:54:33 pastor's teaching us today.
00:54:34 Go ahead and tell him, yeah,
00:54:35 yeah, pastor's teaching us today.
00:54:38 You see, there have been some who have said
00:54:41 that people have to speak in tongues to be saved.
00:54:44 And they try to take Acts chapter two
00:54:46 and one other passage of scripture
00:54:48 that we're going to look at in just a few moments.
00:54:51 And they try to say people have to speak
00:54:53 in tongues to be saved.
00:54:56 And first of all, some of these disciples here
00:54:59 in the upper room had followed Jesus
00:55:01 for three and a half years.
00:55:03 They believed in Jesus.
00:55:04 They had received the Holy Spirit in John chapter 20.
00:55:07 They were in a prayer meeting in Acts chapter one.
00:55:09 They were called disciples and followers of Jesus
00:55:12 already before you ever get to Acts chapter two.
00:55:16 So Acts chapter two was the baptism of the Holy Spirit,
00:55:19 not salvation.
00:55:20 And secondly, the only thing you have to do
00:55:24 with your tongue to be saved is found in Romans chapter 10
00:55:28 and verse number nine.
00:55:29 Romans 10 and verse nine says that if you confess
00:55:32 with your mouth, the Lord Jesus,
00:55:34 and believe in your heart that God raised Jesus
00:55:37 from the dead, you will be saved.
00:55:41 You're saved by confessing with your mouth,
00:55:44 Jesus is Lord, and believing in your heart,
00:55:47 not by speaking in tongues or by doing any other work
00:55:50 or deed, you cannot be saved by works.
00:55:53 Ephesians chapter two, verse eight and nine,
00:55:55 for it is by grace you have been saved through faith
00:55:58 and this not from yourselves.
00:56:01 It is the gift of God.
00:56:03 Not by works.
00:56:05 So that no one can boast.
00:56:08 We'll be around here boasting.
00:56:09 You got tongues for salvation?
00:56:11 You ain't saved, I got it.
00:56:12 No, no, it's not by works.
00:56:17 Another thing that is confusing to people
00:56:20 is when people speak in tongues without an interpreter.
00:56:24 And there are two different types of tongues in the Bible.
00:56:27 There's the gift of tongues, the gift of the Holy Spirit,
00:56:29 the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which is,
00:56:33 one of those is the speaking in tongues.
00:56:37 And you can find the gifts of the Holy Spirit
00:56:38 in first Corinthians chapter 12, verse seven through 11.
00:56:42 And the purpose of the gifts of the Holy Spirit
00:56:44 is to edify the church, is to build up others.
00:56:48 And with the gift of tongues, it builds up others
00:56:50 when someone interprets the tongue.
00:56:54 So it's the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
00:56:56 And then there's the personal prayer language.
00:56:58 And the purpose of the personal prayer language
00:57:00 is to build up the person who's speaking in tongues,
00:57:03 is to build them up, is to edify the person
00:57:05 speaking in tongues.
00:57:06 So there's a difference between the gift of the Holy Spirit,
00:57:09 the gift of tongues, and the personal prayer language.
00:57:13 And I wanna show this to you in the Bible,
00:57:15 and it will help clear up some confusion.
00:57:18 And as we read this portion of scripture,
00:57:21 understand Paul goes back and forth
00:57:23 between the personal prayer language
00:57:25 and the gift of the Holy Spirit,
00:57:28 which needs to be interpreted,
00:57:30 the gift of tongues for corporate edification.
00:57:33 He's gonna go back and forth, back and forth.
00:57:36 Let's read this together.
00:57:37 First Corinthians chapter 14, beginning in verse number four.
00:57:41 Let me teach you just a little bit here.
00:57:42 It says, "Anyone who speaks in a tongue
00:57:46 "edifies themselves."
00:57:49 That's the personal prayer language.
00:57:51 It edifies the person speaking in tongues.
00:57:55 But he goes on to say,
00:57:56 "But the one who prophesies edifies the church."
00:57:59 He said, "I would like every one of you to speak in tongues."
00:58:02 He's referring to the personal prayer language.
00:58:05 He said, "But I would rather have you prophesy."
00:58:07 Why does he say that?
00:58:08 Because this benefits the entire church.
00:58:10 He's talking to a church about corporate worship.
00:58:13 And he says, "The one who prophesies
00:58:14 "is greater than the one who speaks in tongues,
00:58:16 "unless someone interprets it
00:58:18 "so that the church may be edified."
00:58:21 He's talking about the gift of the Holy Spirit.
00:58:24 Says, "Someone who speaks in tongues in a church setting,
00:58:26 "it needs to be interpreted
00:58:28 "so that the church can be edified."
00:58:30 And Paul goes on to show us the distinction
00:58:32 between the gift of tongues
00:58:34 and the personal prayer language.
00:58:36 Notice this, 1 Corinthians chapter 14.
00:58:38 Let's pick up reading verse 12.
00:58:40 He says, "So it is with you,
00:58:41 "since you are eager for the gifts of the Spirit."
00:58:46 And one of those gifts of the Spirit is speaking in tongues.
00:58:49 And we talked briefly about the gifts of the Spirit
00:58:52 in last Sunday's message.
00:58:53 Again, they're found in 1 Corinthians 12,
00:58:56 verse seven through 11.
00:58:58 He says, "Since you're eager for the gifts of the Spirit,"
00:58:59 he says, "try to excel in those
00:59:01 "that build up the church."
00:59:03 And he says, "Build up the church."
00:59:05 The gifts of the Spirit, they build up the church.
00:59:06 They edify other people.
00:59:08 Verse 13, "For this reason,
00:59:10 "the one who speaks in a tongue
00:59:12 "should pray that they may interpret what they say."
00:59:15 And Paul is talking to this church,
00:59:17 and he said, "Hey, in a church setting,
00:59:19 "in a small group setting,
00:59:20 "when someone speaks in a tongue,
00:59:22 "they should pray for someone to interpret it.
00:59:24 "Otherwise, it will not benefit,
00:59:26 "it will not build up the church
00:59:29 "because no one knows what that person is saying."
00:59:32 Verse 14, he says, "For if I pray in a tongue,
00:59:35 "my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful."
00:59:38 My mind doesn't know what my spirit is praying.
00:59:41 So what shall I do?
00:59:42 I will pray with my spirit,
00:59:44 and Paul doesn't forbid a personal prayer language.
00:59:47 He is simply helping this church
00:59:49 who have been having chaotic
00:59:51 and out of control church services
00:59:54 to do things decently and in order.
00:59:56 How many know that we serve a God who is in order?
00:59:58 He's a God of order.
00:59:59 And Paul was teaching them how to conduct themselves
01:00:03 in the house of God.
01:00:06 But he goes on to say,
01:00:07 "But I will also pray with my understanding.
01:00:11 "I will sing with my spirit,
01:00:13 "but I will also sing with my understanding.
01:00:16 "Otherwise, when you are praising God in the spirit,"
01:00:19 so notice this, you can praise God in the spirit,
01:00:22 or he's referring to tongues.
01:00:23 That's okay to do to edify yourself,
01:00:26 to build yourself up spiritually,
01:00:28 but it doesn't help build up the church.
01:00:30 So he goes on to say,
01:00:31 "How can someone else who is now put in the position
01:00:35 "of an inquirer, of a listener, say amen
01:00:38 "to your thanksgiving
01:00:39 "since they do not know what you are saying?
01:00:42 "You are giving thanks well enough,
01:00:45 "but no one else is edified."
01:00:48 And so Paul was teaching that in the church,
01:00:51 if they praise God in tongues, the church isn't edified.
01:00:55 Only the person who is speaking in tongues
01:00:58 is edified, so Paul says,
01:00:59 "Hey, gang, hey, church, stop being out of order.
01:01:02 "Stop only thinking about yourselves."
01:01:06 In verse 18, he says,
01:01:07 "I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you."
01:01:12 Paul says, "Hey, I speak in tongues all the time.
01:01:14 "I have a personal prayer language that builds me up,"
01:01:17 and I understand what Paul is saying here,
01:01:20 because I have been speaking in tongues
01:01:21 since I was 19 years old to build myself up spiritually.
01:01:26 It's greatly benefited my life.
01:01:29 But verse 19, he goes on to say,
01:01:30 "But in the church, I would rather speak
01:01:34 "five intelligible words to instruct others
01:01:37 "than 10,000 words in a tongue."
01:01:41 And I try to model what Paul teaches here.
01:01:44 In the church, I wanna speak
01:01:46 so that everyone can understand me.
01:01:49 It will not help you if I spoke in a language
01:01:52 you did not know.
01:01:55 And what I want you to understand is there's a difference
01:01:58 between the gift of tongues, the gift of the Holy Spirit,
01:02:01 which needs to be interpreted
01:02:02 so the church can be edified and built up,
01:02:04 versus the personal prayer language,
01:02:07 which is for a person to be built up
01:02:10 and does not need to be interpreted.
01:02:13 Now that we shed some light on the difference
01:02:16 between the gift of tongues
01:02:17 and the personal prayer language,
01:02:19 I wanna focus back in on the baptism in the Holy Spirit,
01:02:23 and let's look at some more examples of people
01:02:26 who had this second experience and were filled,
01:02:30 or baptized, or filled to overflowing
01:02:33 with the Holy Spirit.
01:02:36 Let's look at Acts chapter 19.
01:02:37 Let's pick up reading it in verse number one.
01:02:40 It says, "While Apollos was at Corinth,
01:02:42 "Paul took the road through the interior
01:02:44 "and arrived at Ephesus.
01:02:46 "There he found some," notice these words,
01:02:49 "He found some disciples and asked them,
01:02:51 "'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?'
01:02:53 "They answered," this is kind of our theme verse,
01:02:55 "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit,"
01:02:59 the theme verse for the series.
01:03:00 He says, "So Paul asked,
01:03:02 "Then what baptism did you receive?
01:03:04 "John's baptism, they replied.
01:03:06 "Paul said, 'John's baptism was a baptism of repentance.
01:03:09 "'He told the people to believe
01:03:10 "'in the one coming after him, that is in Jesus.'
01:03:13 "On hearing this, they were baptized
01:03:15 "in the name of the Lord Jesus."
01:03:19 This was their salvation experience.
01:03:22 They believed in Jesus.
01:03:23 They were water baptized.
01:03:25 Listen, church, if they were not saved,
01:03:28 Paul would not have baptized them in water
01:03:31 because they would have went under the water,
01:03:33 a dry sinner, and come up a very wet one,
01:03:37 but they would not have been a saint.
01:03:38 They would not have been a child of God,
01:03:39 but these people were born again.
01:03:42 They were saved, and we know the Bible teaches
01:03:45 that the Holy Spirit comes to live inside of the believer
01:03:49 at the very moment they give their life to Jesus Christ.
01:03:52 You find this in Ephesians chapter one in verse number 13.
01:03:55 And you also were included in Christ
01:03:57 when you heard the message of truth,
01:03:59 the gospel of your salvation.
01:04:00 When you believed, when you, right at the very moment
01:04:03 you believed, you were marked in him
01:04:06 with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.
01:04:09 The Holy Spirit comes to live inside of every person
01:04:12 at the moment they give their life to Christ.
01:04:14 Church, listen, at salvation, 100% of the time,
01:04:19 the Holy Spirit comes to live inside of the Christ follower.
01:04:22 So these disciples at Ephesus have the Holy Spirit
01:04:25 living inside of them, and then they were water baptized.
01:04:30 Next, we see them receive this second experience
01:04:33 called the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
01:04:37 Let's look at this, Acts chapter number 19,
01:04:39 and beginning in verse number six,
01:04:41 it says when Paul placed his hands on them,
01:04:45 the Holy Spirit came on them,
01:04:47 and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.
01:04:49 There were about 12 men in all.
01:04:52 These believers were baptized in the Holy Spirit.
01:04:57 Let me pause and say this, church, understand this.
01:04:59 No one has to place their hands on you to receive salvation.
01:05:02 That's by works.
01:05:04 It's not by works so that no one can boast.
01:05:07 This was a second experience,
01:05:08 the baptism of the Holy Spirit,
01:05:11 and the scripture says they spoke in tongues and prophesied,
01:05:15 and you do not have to speak in tongues
01:05:17 or prophesy to be saved.
01:05:19 This was not salvation.
01:05:20 It was the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
01:05:23 This was not the gift of tongues.
01:05:25 That's why it was not interpreted there in these verses.
01:05:29 These believers at Ephesus received
01:05:30 a personal prayer language,
01:05:32 which is for a person to edify
01:05:34 or to build themselves up spiritually.
01:05:36 Let's look at another portion of scripture
01:05:38 and see a second experience called the baptism
01:05:41 of the Holy Spirit.
01:05:42 Acts chapter eight, verse 13 says,
01:05:44 Simon himself believed and was baptized,
01:05:49 believed in Jesus.
01:05:50 He's water baptized, and he followed Philip everywhere,
01:05:55 astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw.
01:05:57 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard
01:06:00 that Samaria had accepted the word of God,
01:06:03 this is their salvation experience.
01:06:05 Ephesians one, verse 13, lets us know
01:06:08 when someone gives their heart to Christ,
01:06:09 they immediately, the Holy Spirit
01:06:12 is now living inside of them.
01:06:15 It goes on to say, they sent Peter and John to Samaria.
01:06:19 When they arrived, they prayed for the,
01:06:22 notice the words, the new believers.
01:06:25 They prayed for the new believers.
01:06:27 They have the Holy Spirit living inside of them.
01:06:29 They've been water baptized,
01:06:31 but there's a second experience.
01:06:32 It says they prayed for the new believers there
01:06:34 that they might receive the Holy Spirit
01:06:36 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them,
01:06:39 not just in them, but on them to overflowing.
01:06:42 They had simply been baptized in the name
01:06:44 of the Lord Jesus.
01:06:45 Then Peter placed his, their hands on,
01:06:47 Peter and John placed their hands on them,
01:06:49 and they received the Holy Spirit.
01:06:52 This is referring to the baptism of the Holy Spirit,
01:06:55 not salvation.
01:06:56 No one has to lay their hands on you to be saved,
01:07:00 or for the Holy Spirit to come live inside of you
01:07:02 at salvation.
01:07:03 You just need to give your life to Jesus Christ,
01:07:06 and at that very moment,
01:07:08 the Holy Spirit comes to live inside of you.
01:07:10 This was the baptism of the Holy Spirit
01:07:12 for power to be a witness.
01:07:15 And then verse 18 says,
01:07:17 when Simon saw, come on, every location,
01:07:20 shout saw.
01:07:22 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given
01:07:26 at the laying on of the apostles' hands,
01:07:28 he offered them money.
01:07:32 Now we can't be 100% sure what Simon saw,
01:07:36 because the Bible doesn't tell us.
01:07:38 Maybe he saw them speaking in tongues,
01:07:40 maybe he saw them praising God,
01:07:42 maybe he saw them prophesying.
01:07:43 We aren't 100% sure,
01:07:45 but we do know there was some type of outward sign
01:07:48 that these people had been baptized in the Holy Spirit.
01:07:53 And I have my own thoughts on what they saw.
01:07:56 Come talk to me later.
01:07:58 Acts chapter 10, verse 44.
01:08:00 Let's look at another second experience that happens here.
01:08:05 Acts 10, verse 44 says,
01:08:06 while Peter was still speaking these words,
01:08:09 the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.
01:08:12 The circumcised believers,
01:08:14 the circumcised believers who had come with Peter
01:08:17 were astonished at the gift of the Holy Spirit,
01:08:21 'cause the Holy Spirit's a gift,
01:08:22 whether it's the gifts of the Holy Spirit
01:08:24 or whether it's the personal prayer language,
01:08:27 the Holy Spirit's a gift,
01:08:29 had been poured out even on Gentiles,
01:08:32 for they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.
01:08:36 This is the other passage of scripture
01:08:38 people try to use to say
01:08:40 you have to speak in tongues to be saved.
01:08:42 But again, we know the Bible makes it very, very clear
01:08:46 that salvation is a work of grace.
01:08:49 You can't do anything to earn it.
01:08:51 All you have to do is place your faith in Christ,
01:08:55 lifting your hands, getting water baptized,
01:08:57 speaking in tongues, jumping up and down
01:09:00 will not make you a Christian.
01:09:01 These people were saved, they gave their life to Christ,
01:09:05 they believed in Christ,
01:09:06 and then immediately they were baptized in the Holy Spirit.
01:09:11 So understand this, you can be saved
01:09:13 and immediately baptized in the Holy Spirit.
01:09:18 Church, understand this, understand this, understand this.
01:09:20 I've been a Christian a long time.
01:09:22 I've seen a lot of Christians miss this.
01:09:25 The baptism of the Holy Spirit
01:09:27 is not about spiritual maturity.
01:09:30 These people were saved and baptized in the Holy Spirit.
01:09:33 It's not about spiritual maturity.
01:09:35 It's about power to be a witness.
01:09:38 There are people who are baptized in the Holy Spirit
01:09:41 that are still babes in Christ,
01:09:44 but it is a second experience for every Christian
01:09:47 to receive power to be a witness.
01:09:50 And how many of you would agree with your pastor?
01:09:54 We could all use more power.
01:09:55 Come on, we could all use more boldness.
01:09:57 We could all use more of God.
01:09:59 Man, I need more of God.
01:10:02 Here's how I wanna close this message today.
01:10:05 How to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
01:10:07 Let me give you four quick points, application.
01:10:09 How do you receive it, how do you receive it?
01:10:10 Number one is this, ask God to baptize you
01:10:14 in the Holy Spirit.
01:10:16 Luke chapter 11 and verse 13,
01:10:18 "If you then, you dads, you moms, though you are evil,
01:10:22 know how to give good gifts to your children,
01:10:25 how much more will your Father in heaven
01:10:27 give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?"
01:10:29 And you don't have to ask for the Holy Spirit of salvation.
01:10:31 So Jesus is not talking about salvation here.
01:10:34 He's talking about the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
01:10:36 He's talking about having more of the Holy Spirit
01:10:38 in your life.
01:10:39 You're saved, you're sealed with the Holy Spirit.
01:10:40 Now ask your Father who gives good gifts
01:10:44 to baptize you in the Holy Spirit.
01:10:46 Here's the second thing, just worship and magnify God.
01:10:49 Just worship God.
01:10:51 As you ask God, just God, I magnify you.
01:10:52 Open your mouth, lift your hands,
01:10:54 and just begin to worship God.
01:10:55 God, fill me with the Holy Spirit, I magnify you.
01:10:57 Baptize me in the Holy Spirit.
01:10:59 Just ask God, worship God.
01:11:01 Here's the third, by faith, receive the baptism
01:11:05 of the Holy Spirit, by faith.
01:11:06 Every gift we receive from God is by faith.
01:11:09 You cannot get saved without faith.
01:11:11 Everything you receive in the kingdom is by faith.
01:11:16 So by faith, ask God to baptize you in the Holy Spirit.
01:11:19 Worship God, just God, I receive your good gifts by faith.
01:11:24 Us, earthly fathers and mothers,
01:11:26 we know how to give good gifts to our children.
01:11:28 How much more will you give the Holy Spirit
01:11:30 to those who just ask him?
01:11:32 And number four, this is for all of you who are saved
01:11:35 and you've been baptized in the Holy Spirit.
01:11:37 Number four, ask God to continually fill you
01:11:40 with the Holy Spirit.
01:11:41 And we gotta be continually filled
01:11:44 with the Holy Spirit, Ephesians 5:18.
01:11:46 Do not get drunk on wine,
01:11:48 which leads to debauchery.
01:11:49 Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit.
01:11:53 It's literally saying be filled and filled again
01:11:55 and filled again and filled again.
01:11:57 You need to keep being filled
01:11:58 with the power of the Holy Spirit.
01:12:01 Why?
01:12:02 So you don't drift into lukewarmness.
01:12:04 You need to keep taking spiritual next steps.
01:12:08 And in a moment, we're gonna stand,
01:12:09 we're going to worship God, we're gonna magnify God.
01:12:11 Ask God to baptize us with the Holy Spirit.
01:12:13 Ask God to fill us with the Holy Spirit.
01:12:16 God, fill us again and again.
01:12:18 And God fills you up to be a witness.
01:12:21 He fills you up to pour you out.
01:12:24 He fills you up to pour you out.
01:12:26 To pour you out in the community,
01:12:27 to pour you out in your workplace,
01:12:28 to pour you out at your school,
01:12:29 to pour you out at the ball games,
01:12:30 to pour you out at the activities,
01:12:32 to pour you out at your church to make a difference.
01:12:34 And I'm praying that God would fill you up
01:12:36 and you would join the dream team and help serve our kids,
01:12:39 help serve our students,
01:12:41 help serve in the first impressions,
01:12:43 help serve on our worship team.
01:12:44 And some of you have incredible voices
01:12:46 and play instruments that you would use it
01:12:48 for the glory of God.
01:12:49 God, fill me up so you can pour me out.
01:12:53 Come on, every location, would you stand?
01:12:54 Every location, would you stand?
01:12:55 We're gonna worship God with the worship team.
01:12:57 Just come and get ready to prepare.
01:12:59 And right now, church, would you do this?
01:13:02 Nobody leave at any location.
01:13:04 Would you just right now just,
01:13:05 if you're comfortable today,
01:13:07 would you just lift your hands right now
01:13:08 and ask God to baptize you in the Holy Spirit?
01:13:10 Just right now, would you ask God,
01:13:12 some of you, to fill you again with the Holy Spirit?
01:13:14 That you'd have the power to be a witness.
01:13:16 God, fill us right now, every location.
01:13:19 Come on, Midwest City, come on, lift those hands high.
01:13:20 Come on, Northwest, lift those hands high.

01:16:03 I thank you for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
01:16:07 In Jesus' name, as eyes are closed at every location,
01:16:11 hands are bowed, heads are bowed today.
01:16:13 There are some people across the locations
01:16:15 that don't know Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
01:16:17 You've never given your life to Christ.
01:16:19 You never said yes to Him.
01:16:21 You never surrendered to Him.
01:16:22 You know about religion, you know about church,
01:16:24 you know a Bible verse, you know "Amazing Grace," the song,
01:16:27 but you don't know Jesus, and today's your day
01:16:29 to know Jesus, to have your sins forgiven,
01:16:32 to be made right with God,
01:16:33 to have your name recorded in heaven
01:16:35 with what the Bible calls the Lamb's Book of Life.
01:16:37 When you say yes to Jesus,
01:16:38 God's gonna write your name down.
01:16:40 I'm talking to several of you today.
01:16:42 You're lukewarm. You're lukewarm. You're lukewarm.
01:16:46 You've stopped taking spiritual steps,
01:16:48 and whenever you stop taking spiritual steps,
01:16:50 you don't stay where you are.
01:16:52 If you're not moving forward, you're slipping backwards,
01:16:55 and some of you have slipped backwards,
01:16:56 and you've been slipping backwards and backwards
01:16:58 and backwards and backwards and backwards
01:17:00 and backwards and backwards,
01:17:02 and there's a big gap between you and God.
01:17:04 Sir, ma'am, today is the day to come home.
01:17:08 Teenager, today is the day to come home,
01:17:10 to get right with God.
01:17:12 Don't live distance.
01:17:13 Don't keep going backwards and backwards
01:17:15 and backwards and backwards and backwards.
01:17:17 Today, come home.
01:17:19 Rededicate your life to the Lord.
01:17:21 Let Him touch you and wash you and fill you again.
01:17:25 If that's you, you're far from God today.
01:17:27 You don't know Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
01:17:29 Today, you need to rededicate your life to the Lord.
01:17:31 As I count to three, shoot that hand up high in the air
01:17:34 and come home to God today.
01:17:36 One, two, three.
01:17:38 Just lift it high right now.
