00:00 Paul DeLacy had been one of my oldest friends.
00:02 Three months ago, he'd been killed in a cave-in.
00:04 I was out of the country.
00:06 This was the first time since his death
00:07 I've been able to visit the cemetery and pay my respects.
00:11 I wondered if Paul's hobby had been worth the price of his life.
00:14 During the past 20 years, Paul had become world famous
00:17 as an amateur archaeologist.
00:19 In fact, everything he touched became successful.
00:21 He and Ed Phillips built the DeLacy Phillips Motor Company
00:24 into a multimillion dollar business.
00:26 I thought of his son Steve and his daughter Pamela.
00:30 I'd known them since they were children.
00:32 When their mother died, Paul and his children
00:34 seemed to grow even closer together.
00:36 I knew their father's death must have affected them both deeply.
00:39 I decided to visit them.
00:41 [music playing]
00:45 [music playing]
00:48 Hello, Phillips.
01:09 Mr. Steve, please.
01:11 [knocking]
01:12 Mike.
01:18 Steve.
01:19 It's good to see you again.
01:20 Thanks.
01:21 When did you arrive?
01:22 Late last night.
01:23 It always amazes me how you're just arriving or just leaving.
01:25 Sit down.
01:26 Thanks.
01:27 Can I get you something?
01:28 No, nothing, thanks.
01:29 Where's Pam?
01:30 You might as well know she isn't living here.
01:35 She's taking an apartment in the city.
01:37 Oh.
01:38 Do you want to tell me about it?
01:41 Not much to tell.
01:42 It concerns Dad.
01:44 I don't think Dad's death was an accident.
01:46 How does that tie in with your sister?
01:52 I think Pamela killed him.
01:55 That's a very serious accusation.
01:57 I know, but I think she did.
01:59 Call it instinct, anything you like.
02:02 I don't want to call it.
02:03 I want to know.
02:05 When your father was killed in Mexico,
02:06 you and Pam were along.
02:08 From the newspaper accounts I read,
02:09 the police believe there's an accident.
02:11 So did I at the time.
02:15 What happened to change of mind?
02:18 Well, immediately after Dad's death,
02:21 Pam began avoiding me.
02:23 It became increasingly worse at the funeral.
02:25 She didn't say two words to me.
02:27 And when Dad's will was read, she didn't even show up.
02:30 We've always been so close.
02:33 So I began to think, and suddenly I got an idea.
02:37 Pam had killed him, and her conscience was driving her crazy.
02:40 Is that what you told Pam?
02:45 Yes.
02:46 And she didn't deny it.
02:48 She had hysterics.
02:49 That night, she gave me all the proof I needed.
02:51 She moved out of the house.
02:52 She ran away.
02:54 You said she had an apartment.
02:55 Where?
02:56 Carleton Terrace.
03:02 Where are you going?
03:05 I'm going to find out if you're right.
03:07 I told the taxi driver to take me to the Carleton Terrace apartments.
03:23 As we drove, I kept thinking about what Steve had told me.
03:26 I've wanted a lot of things in my lifetime.
03:29 I know I wanted Steve to be wrong.
03:32 Is this the last evening?
03:45 I might go in.
03:47 [music playing]
03:50 I've always thought it was Dad's best picture.
04:04 Oh, Pam.
04:05 It's wonderful seeing you again.
04:06 How did you find me?
04:08 Steve gave me your address.
04:12 I guess it's only sisterly to ask.
04:15 How is he?
04:16 Much like you.
04:17 When I asked him about you, he was very uncomfortable.
04:20 I guess I'm not a very good poker player.
04:23 I didn't come here to play games, Pam.
04:25 I came because of a conversation I had with Steve.
04:28 I hope that's not the only reason, Mike,
04:30 because I'm very fond of you.
04:32 If I'd known where to reach you after Dad's death,
04:34 I-- I honestly think I would have come running.
04:37 You used to run to Steve when you had a problem.
04:40 What happened to change that?
04:43 Did-- did Steve tell you he accused me of killing--
04:50 Why don't you tell me about it?
04:52 I want to tell you about it.
04:58 Dad, Steve, and I were together at the ruins.
05:01 Dad was excited because he believed within a few days
05:03 he would uncover a tomb older than the pharaoh's.
05:06 Go on.
05:09 Steve asked Dad whether he'd consider the conversation.
05:13 Dad said he had, and his decision
05:14 was that Steve would go into no other business
05:16 but the DeLacy Phillips Motor Company.
05:19 Steve was furious, and he argued all the way back to camp.
05:23 What happened then?
05:24 Steve left the next morning for the village.
05:27 Then Ed Phillips arrived.
05:29 He and Dad sent all the workers away,
05:31 and together they began reinforcing the cave.
05:34 Two days later, Steve came back.
05:36 I told him not to worry, that Dad would come around.
05:39 Steve said he wasn't going to worry,
05:41 that everything would work out.
05:43 Well, what did Steve want to do?
05:46 I don't know.
05:48 The next day, Dad went into the cave alone.
05:51 That's when it happened.
05:53 It wasn't an accident.
05:55 How do you know?
05:56 It took 15 hours of digging before we found him.
05:59 I'll never forget it.
06:01 I was the first one to reach him.
06:04 He was dead.
06:06 Then I saw something else, but I was so stunned
06:09 that it took days before it penetrated my mind.
06:13 What did you see?
06:14 Two of the wooden braces holding up the structure
06:16 to the entrance had been sawed through.
06:18 The sliders chipped to the land, and the braces had to collapse.
06:22 When we returned here, I-- I went to some friends.
06:26 I didn't tell them why, but I told them what I'd seen.
06:29 They told me it was called splice saw
06:31 and used effectively in the last war as a booby trap
06:35 and that only an engineer could rig the proper cutting.
06:40 Then I realized Dad had been murdered.
06:44 What can you do about it, Mike?
06:46 Well, the first thing is to straighten Steve out
06:48 and get you back home where you belong.
06:51 I don't want that.
06:53 Why?
06:54 When I ran away, I-- I promised myself
06:56 no one would ever learn what I knew.
06:59 But now, I want the man punished.
07:02 I think you'll soon know what Steve meant
07:04 when he told me not to worry, that everything
07:06 was going to work out.
07:08 You think he's involved?
07:10 More than that.
07:11 Steve is a graduate engineer.
07:13 Pam said Steve and his father had argued.
07:21 If anyone could tell me whether the argument had been
07:23 really serious, it would be Ed Phillips,
07:25 Paul's partner for 30 years.
07:27 He gave the driver the address of the DeLacy Phillips building.
07:30 [knocking]
07:35 Come in.
07:38 Oh, Mike.
07:39 Mike, when did you get in?
07:43 A short while ago.
07:44 Good to see you.
07:45 Good to see you.
07:46 Mike, have you seen Pam and Steve?
07:48 No.
07:49 Mike, you-- you don't usually ask a lot of questions
07:51 unless you have pretty good reason.
07:52 Is something bothering you?
07:54 I can't quite put my finger on it, Ed.
07:56 But I'm not sure Paul's death was an accident.
08:00 It doesn't add up.
08:02 He wouldn't overlook a weak wooden brace.
08:04 I might make that mistake, but how do you
08:06 explain Paul making it?
08:09 I don't-- I don't know.
08:11 I-- I just accepted Paul's death as an accident.
08:16 I know.
08:20 There will always be a doubt in my mind.
08:23 Oh, Mike, I wish you hadn't have said that.
08:27 Maybe I've been hanging around the wrong people too long.
08:30 Come on.
08:31 I'll buy you lunch.
08:32 No.
08:33 Thanks, Ed.
08:34 Just taking my appetite away.
08:36 I'm sorry, Ed.
08:40 I'm sorry, too, Mike.
08:42 [music playing]
08:46 [music playing]
08:49 I headed for the office of Alan Harper, Paul's attorney.
09:03 He knew I was on my way over.
09:05 [knocking]
09:08 Come in, Lanyard.
09:11 Thanks.
09:13 I'm sorry taking up your time like this.
09:16 You said it was important.
09:18 Yeah.
09:19 Could be.
09:21 Well, please sit down.
09:23 Thanks.
09:24 Harper, how much money did Paul DeLacy
09:31 leave to Steve and Pamela?
09:33 Even for you, that's an irregular question.
09:35 But the will's been filed for probate.
09:38 It's now a matter of court record.
09:40 I figured you could save me a trip downtown.
09:43 Paul DeLacy left over $5 million after taxes.
09:47 $1 million he left to several charities.
09:50 The remainder he divided equally between Pamela and Stephen.
09:54 Had he ever discussed changing his will?
09:56 The only changes Paul ever made were
09:57 due to his increasing fortune.
09:59 Occasionally, we altered the amounts of various trust funds
10:02 that he had set up for his children.
10:06 Did he ever say he was disappointed
10:07 in either of his children?
10:09 Absolutely not.
10:10 His children were devoted to him, and he to them.
10:15 I assume you and the insurance companies carefully checked
10:19 and were satisfied his death was accidental.
10:21 A thorough investigation was held.
10:23 Yes, we were satisfied.
10:25 Did you or anyone else check the braces
10:27 at the entrance to the cave?
10:29 I can't say.
10:30 Why not?
10:31 You must realize that when a man of Paul DeLacy's stature
10:36 is accidentally killed, there's confusion.
10:39 We made arrangements for the funeral,
10:40 and a few days later started our investigation.
10:42 It's very likely you didn't examine the braces
10:44 that caused the cave in.
10:46 I don't remember.
10:47 But why is it so important to you?
10:50 I might have a surprise for you.
10:53 I might prove that Paul DeLacy was murdered.
10:56 [music playing]
10:59 [door opening]
11:02 I went back to my hotel to review everything
11:12 that I'd learned today.
11:14 I thought over all that Steve had said.
11:16 The fact that Pam suspected him of killing their father
11:18 could explain her reason for avoiding him.
11:20 Pam was an intelligent girl.
11:22 She recognized something and described it well enough
11:24 to be told it was splice sawing.
11:27 It had to be rigged by an engineer,
11:29 and Steve was an engineer.
11:32 I remembered Ed's words.
11:33 I issued orders that nothing in his office was to be touched,
11:36 just kept clean.
11:38 I realized it sounds silly, but every morning I open his door
11:41 and say, good morning, Paul.
11:44 It makes me feel that he isn't far away.
11:47 Alan Harper had said in the confusion of Paul's death
11:49 the investigation was delayed several days.
11:51 If someone had realized this, it gave him or her time
11:54 to get rid of damaging evidence.
11:56 I had to start somewhere, and a long-distance call
11:58 seemed like a good beginning.
12:00 Long distance.
12:03 Long distance.
12:04 I want to speak to Captain Harold Thompson
12:06 of the Boston Police Department.
12:08 No, I don't know his precinct number.
12:11 Sorry, sir, the circuits are busy.
12:13 Shall I try again in half an hour?
12:16 Yes, please.
12:17 This is Michael Lanyard, room 514, Ambassador Hotel.
12:21 Thanks.
12:22 [knocking]
12:26 It was only 4.30 in the afternoon.
12:28 That meant Alan Harper would still be in his office.
12:31 I decided to call him because I had an idea.
12:33 Operator, get me Alan Harper.
12:40 He's an attorney.
12:42 His office is on Park Lane.
12:44 Yeah.
12:46 Harper's secretary put me through to him.
12:50 He didn't sound at all happy to hear from me.
12:53 He said I upset him when I implied that Paul's death
12:55 might not have been an accident.
12:56 I told him I was sorry and that I needed all of Paul's
12:59 private papers and files.
13:01 He said it was impossible and unethical.
13:03 I told him I didn't have time to argue.
13:05 If he didn't send them over right away,
13:07 I'd call the insurance companies.
13:08 He was silent for a moment, then he agreed to have
13:11 the files delivered to me.
13:12 I made it clear to him that I wanted everything--
13:14 the insurance policies, pending patents, corporation
13:16 setups, and anything else he had.
13:19 Harper didn't say goodbye.
13:20 He just said OK and hung up.
13:23 I talked to Captain Thompson and told him
13:29 what I wanted him to do.
13:30 He said he'd get on it right away, and if he found anything,
13:33 he'd call me back.
13:34 Paul's files showed him to be a man with dreams and vision.
13:37 I'd learned what he felt the day he and Ed Phillips
13:40 started in business, and how he felt when his children were
13:43 born, and when his wife died.
13:45 And I learned something else.
13:47 Hello?
13:48 We have a collect call from Mr. Harold Thompson.
13:50 Thompson began by saying he'd put several of his men to work,
13:53 and he'd only been able to turn up two things.
13:56 He mentioned MIT in the year 1916, World War I
14:00 and the Engineers Corps.
14:02 And he said even if he had more time,
14:04 he doubted that anything else could be found.
14:06 I told him that was enough, because with his information,
14:09 plus what I'd read in Paul's files,
14:11 I was beginning to get a pretty clear picture.
14:14 [music playing]
14:17 Thompson had supplied me with what might
14:19 be the key to Paul's death.
14:21 Right now, I was tired and needed some sleep,
14:23 because by this time tomorrow, I would either
14:25 have proved Paul was murdered, or I
14:27 would know for certain his death had been accidental.
14:29 [music playing]
14:32 The next morning, while having breakfast,
14:38 I telephoned Steve and Pamela.
14:40 I asked them to meet me at my hotel about 10 o'clock.
14:43 I also called Ed Phillips and invited
14:45 him to stop by around 1015.
14:47 I had an idea, but I wasn't at all sure it would work.
14:50 [knocking]
14:51 [music playing]
14:54 I'm back.
15:01 Oh, did I disturb your breakfast?
15:03 No, not at all.
15:04 You're right on time.
15:05 Mike, I'm sorry.
15:07 I'm sorry I'm late.
15:08 You're right on time.
15:10 Mike, you sounded so urgent this morning.
15:13 Have you--
15:14 Have I found out something about Steve?
15:17 Yeah.
15:19 Yesterday, Mike, I made a mistake.
15:22 I shouldn't have talked to you about my brother.
15:24 I don't want anything to happen to him.
15:27 Sit down, Pam.
15:30 Steve will be here any minute.
15:32 We'll get everything straightened out then.
15:34 Oh, but I don't want to see him.
15:35 [knocking]
15:37 I think it's a little late to prevent it.
15:39 Hello, Mike.
15:45 Steve.
15:46 If this is a joke, I don't like it.
15:52 It's no joke, Steve.
15:54 I want you and Pam to listen to what I have to say.
15:57 Come in.
15:59 [knocking]
16:01 Sit down.
16:07 Steve, you told me that you thought
16:13 your sister was responsible for your father's death.
16:16 You want the truth.
16:17 No.
16:18 Then you don't think she did it.
16:20 Let's get it over with.
16:21 You said you had something to say.
16:23 [phone ringing]
16:26 Mr. Phillips is on his way up to your suite, Mr. Lanyard.
16:29 Thanks.
16:31 What's going on, Mike?
16:33 In a few minutes, I'll know whether your father's
16:35 death was an accident.
16:37 [knocking]
16:39 Come in.
16:40 Well, Steve.
16:44 Hello, Ed.
16:45 Oh, Pam, it's good to see you both.
16:47 You know, I've got an attendee to call you for dinner.
16:49 How about tomorrow night?
16:50 That'll be fine.
16:51 I'll be there.
16:52 I'll be there.
16:53 How about tomorrow night?
16:54 That'll be fine.
16:55 Oh, Mike, I'm sorry for the way I acted yesterday.
16:58 Now, uh, what's this all about?
17:01 Ed, you lied to me yesterday, twice.
17:06 I'm afraid I don't follow you.
17:08 You said you believed Paul's death was accidental.
17:11 You said you weren't an engineer.
17:13 All right.
17:14 I'll still say it.
17:16 It won't work anymore, Ed.
17:17 You see, I've been checking.
17:19 You were graduated from the Massachusetts Institute
17:21 of Technology in 1916.
17:23 In the First World War, you served as an engineer.
17:28 What about it?
17:29 Well, what has this to do with Paul?
17:31 I did a lot of reading last night.
17:33 Mike, don't fool with me.
17:35 If you have anything to say, say it to my attorney.
17:38 Better still, why don't you call the police?
17:42 I'm sorry, Pam.
17:44 I want to apologize for it.
17:46 You're not leaving, Ed.
17:49 Sit down.
17:50 You told me that 30 years ago, you and Paul
17:55 formed a corporation.
17:57 But you neglected to tell me that the stock in that corporation
18:00 had a reversion clause.
18:02 If one of you died, the stock reverted
18:05 to the surviving partner.
18:07 That's common knowledge, Mike.
18:09 Perhaps.
18:10 But 15 years ago, you and Paul decided to change that.
18:14 But you never did.
18:16 I know why.
18:19 Oh?
18:22 Suppose you tell me, hm?
18:24 Paul married first and had two children.
18:29 You married much later and had a son.
18:32 Then you and Paul began to discuss the stock clause
18:34 because you both had heirs.
18:36 And as you said, you'd built a dynasty.
18:38 Then your wife and son were killed
18:43 in an automobile accident.
18:45 [music playing]
18:48 Shall I go on?
18:51 No.
18:52 You might get it wrong, Mike.
18:56 When my wife and son died, a part of me died too.
19:06 Over the years, they've grown in this groove
19:08 instead of lessening.
19:09 There was nothing left for me but my work.
19:14 Mike, you know, I--
19:16 I used to go home at night and I'd count the hours
19:18 till I could get back and get started again.
19:22 Do you know why I tampered with that brace?
19:26 Why I had to kill Paul?
19:27 One day, Paul talked about bringing Steve into the firm.
19:37 I-- I tried to talk him out of it.
19:40 You remember that, don't you, Steve?
19:43 Paul brought up the stock provision clause again,
19:45 and I realized that he wanted everything for his children.
19:47 Mike, I-- I haven't very long to live.
19:51 I'm a sick man.
19:55 I don't have a son to leave my share to.
19:59 Everything that I'd spent a lifetime to build
20:02 was going to go to Paul and his family.
20:04 Mike, I didn't want to be cheated.
20:07 Don't you understand?
20:08 I-- I wanted to own the company.
20:10 For once in my life, I-- I wanted something
20:12 that was all mine before I died.
20:14 None of you understand.
20:22 Just like Paul does, I loved him.
20:32 I loved him.
20:33 You want me to go to the district attorney?
20:45 No.
20:50 I may as well do that.
20:55 I've done everything else.
20:59 [music playing]
21:02 Operator, would you give me the district attorney, please?
21:11 [music playing]
21:14 Hello, Mike.
21:22 I thought you left town without saying goodbye to us.
21:24 You know me better than that.
21:26 Goodbye, Pam.
21:28 Steve.
21:29 Goodbye, Mike, and thanks.
21:30 Bye.
21:31 Mike, we-- we visited Ed today at the penitentiary hospital.
21:36 The doctor told us he won't live another 30 days.
21:40 Pam and I talked it over.
21:42 The firm's name will remain the DeLacy Phillips Motor Company.
21:45 We told that to Ed today.
21:48 What did he say?
21:50 He asked Steve if he would issue orders that nothing
21:52 in his office be touched or changed.
21:54 That it always remain as it is.
21:56 What are you going to do?
22:00 It'll be the first request I make the day I die.
22:02 I didn't say it to them, but I knew Paul had to be very proud
22:08 of his two children, and I knew something else.
22:11 Steve was going to do a good job.
