Chihuahua living his best life after proving vets wrong
Transcript
00:00 He's 16 years old.
00:01 He's been through a lot.
00:02 Sometimes I wish he could tell me,
00:04 but at the same time, I'm happy that he can't
00:06 because I think it would break my heart
00:08 when he's gone through.
00:10 My name is Gloria, and this is Bitty's story for GeoBeats.
00:13 Sweetie.
00:14 He was found wandering the streets.
00:17 He had this head tilt, constantly shaking
00:19 and scratching at his neck.
00:20 Someone at the shelter decided to take him
00:27 into her care temporarily.
00:29 I was working at a vet clinic, and I
00:31 was fostering dogs that worked with the vet clinic I was at.
00:35 He was my 12th dog.
00:37 Coming from California, they arranged for him
00:40 to be flown to Saskatoon, where I am.
00:42 I picked him up from the airport,
00:43 and I remember the way he was looking up at me, like,
00:45 I hope you're going to be kind to me.
00:47 He wasn't eating.
00:48 He was constantly dehydrated.
00:50 We don't know exactly what happened to him.
00:53 I was taking him in to work with me at the vet clinic.
00:55 One of my bosses there at the time, a veterinarian,
00:58 she said, I don't know if he's going to make it.
01:00 You can keep on trying.
01:02 Then I started to see that he had a really
01:05 strong will to get better.
01:07 Hi.
01:08 He got progressively better and better,
01:10 and more of his personality came out.
01:12 What?
01:13 Having him in my care, I decided to officially adopt him
01:21 at six months.
01:23 He's a very atypical chihuahua.
01:26 Everyone who meets him, they're like, what breed is he?
01:29 He's very calm and confident, and he's just
01:32 a really gentle, quiet dog.
01:35 He's very expressive, too, without being super vocal.
01:39 He'll make little sounds every now and then,
01:40 just express what he wants.
01:42 He's very happy-go-lucky.
01:47 If you want to take him out for a run at the dog park or a walk,
01:50 he's always happy to go.
01:52 If you just want to stay home and watch a movie
01:54 and cuddle on the couch, he's happy to do that.
01:58 It's indescribable, the kind of relationship that we have,
02:01 because he--
02:02 oh, my gosh.
02:03 I can't even put it into words.
02:06 Hi, baby.
02:08 Hi.
02:09 He is truly the light of my life.
02:11 It's a mushroom.
02:15 Depending on the lighting and his mood,
02:17 he can sometimes look like a little wise old man.
02:20 Yeah, I didn't think so.
02:21 And then sometimes I look at him and I see a puppy.
02:24 I keep asking him, how did you ever live on the streets?
02:27 I used to be scared of everything.
02:28 A sneeze would worry him.
02:30 My boyfriend had a guitar, and that guitar scared him.
02:33 He is such a sweet little dog.
02:39 I wouldn't be surprised if he had a family.
02:41 Hi.
02:42 Hi.
02:43 Hello.
02:44 [SQUEALS]
02:45 You're not trapped.
02:46 He must have had cats in his past life,
02:49 because he has a lot of cat-like behaviors.
02:52 He'll groom himself like a cat.
02:53 He gets along really well with cats.
02:56 There you go.
02:58 There was something about him where I just felt like,
03:00 you're meant to be with me, and I'm meant to take care of you.
