Dog was nearly put down because she barked at another dog
Transcript
00:00 She was emaciated, she was pregnant, and in the x-ray you can see a bullet lodged in her lung.
00:05 I'm Miki and this is Moose's story for GeoBeats.
00:09 She was set to be euthanized the day before I applied for her, and they had one extra kennel open,
00:15 and so they gave her an extra day, and that's when I saw her.
00:18 They put her on a bus from Texas, and I picked her up in Virginia.
00:22 She looks around all nervous, sniffs me, and I started petting her, and then she kind of figured it out,
00:26 and she hopped in the back of my car and we went home.
00:30 She sniffs her toys and getting to realize, "Oh, these are mine. I can play with these."
00:34 I think she must have had another owner and just gotten out because she came to me fully potty trained.
00:43 She knew drop it, which was a really random trick for her to know, and she's always just been perfect in the house.
00:52 It's really sad because she was behavioral euthanasia, and the only thing I saw in all of her staff notes was that she barked at a dog.
00:59 This makes me happy.
01:00 From what I've seen with her, she gets very, very excited and wants to be every dog's best friend,
01:05 which we've been working on because a lot of dogs don't like her excitement.
01:09 But her temperament was perfect.
01:13 I have some mobility issues, and so she's training to be a service dog.
01:17 Besides that, I've considered doing a therapy dog certification because she loves other people, especially little kids.
01:23 There's such a stigma around this breed specifically.
01:31 I would go on walks with my friend who had an Australian Shepherd,
01:34 and people would literally stop and ask to take pictures of her dog and ask to pet her dog,
01:38 and I would be standing there with Moose, and no one would give her attention, and it would break my heart.
01:43 I'm shocked that this dog, considering how terrible her first year of life was, wants to be everyone's best friend.
01:49 We're going to make sure the bullet hasn't moved.
01:54 It doesn't bother her. It's lodged between two of her ribs,
01:57 and so it would be more difficult to take it out and cause her more damage.
02:02 I've had her for almost a year and a half.
02:06 She's always been a sweet dog, but she's finally realized that I'm her person.
02:12 She sees me now, and she gets so excited.
02:14 She's like, "Oh, you came back for me!"
02:16 With my health issues, it's interesting because usually she sleeps by my legs,
02:21 but if I'm having a flare and really, really don't feel good, she'll sleep up by my head, and it's really cute.
02:27 It makes me happy that she's safe, but also really sad because there's so many awesome dogs
02:33 that get euthanized every year just because there's not space.
02:36 She was going to get euthanized for behavior issues that don't even exist.
02:41 It's just sad because she's perfect.
02:43 Good night.
