Film Work on Tannehill
Transcript
00:00 All right, Tennessee Titans fans, let's take a look at Ryan Tannehill's performance against
00:05 the New Orleans Saints.
00:06 I got to tell you guys, it was even worse on tape than it was on the TV copy and I was
00:11 not expecting that.
00:12 So let's dive into a play that I think showcases all of the issues with Ryan Tannehill.
00:18 One, he was rusty.
00:19 You could tell he's a guy who hasn't played in a while because he made a ton of bad reads
00:24 and bad decisions out there.
00:25 But there are also some issues that I don't think get better with playing time as the
00:29 season goes on and that is a lack of arm strength and a lack of mobility from a 35-year-old
00:34 quarterback who's just obviously in physical decline.
00:37 Let's dive into Ryan Tannehill's second interception of the day because I think it showcases both
00:41 of the problems that we're having here.
00:43 Simple play action pass, Titans trying to hit an X play.
00:46 And here's my thing.
00:48 This is where the bad decision comes in, in my opinion, because Ryan Tannehill has Chicka
00:55 Conqua here on the deep over route who has a lot of separation already.
01:02 And then he has Chris Moore who has the cornerback in his pocket who's not as explosive a pass
01:09 catcher as Chicka Conqua.
01:11 And he makes the decision to go deep to Chris Moore, which I don't think was the right decision.
01:18 So number one, a bad read and a bad decision from Ryan Tannehill.
01:21 But here's the other problem is a lack of arm strength.
01:25 If you're going to throw this pass to Chris Moore, you have to bomb this thing to where
01:30 he can run and go get it and run away from the defense into the end zone.
01:34 Look how Chris Moore is already starting to stop and backpedal and turn around because
01:41 this ball is here and it needs to be out here into the end zone.
01:46 This is an under throw.
01:47 So not only a bad decision by Ryan Tannehill, but his decline in physical ability is showing
01:53 because Chris Moore is turning around and literally coming back to the ball to try to
01:57 get it.
01:58 This is a massive under throw.
01:59 And when you under throw it that bad, the referees are not going to give you pass interference.
02:03 OK, they're just simply not going to give you that.
02:05 So a bad read by Tannehill and an under throw with a lack of arm strength.
02:10 And I think that got into his head a little bit.
02:13 And we saw some mistakes later in the game because of it.
02:15 On this one, this is an unacceptable misread by a veteran.
02:20 So this is a two man option here.
02:22 This is all about two guys.
02:24 Either you're throwing the Spears or you're throwing the Hopkins.
02:27 Tannehill is just watching these two.
02:29 Whatever happens, he takes the one that's open.
02:32 Well, DeAndre Hopkins is about to go into the middle and be wide open.
02:39 Wide open.
02:40 And I simply cannot understand why Tannehill missed him.
02:46 Why is that ball not the Hopkins?
02:48 Perfect timing.
02:49 Instead, Tannehill holds it and then he panics because he doesn't want to get hit because
02:54 he's 35 and he doesn't want to get hurt again.
02:56 I mean, what is this?
02:58 He oh, I have a pocket.
03:00 I could step up.
03:02 I could take a step back.
03:03 But instead, I'm going to boink, hit into my own offensive lineman, put my head down,
03:11 and then I'm 35.
03:12 So it's not like I'm going to beat anybody to a spot.
03:14 I mean, you can't miss the read that badly and then go to your physical tools, which
03:21 again are declining.
03:22 And this one, this is just a misread by Tannehill.
03:27 They get the look.
03:28 The Titans get the look that Tim Kelly wants.
03:30 They're expecting the Saints to be in man coverage.
03:33 They are.
03:34 Number one has Nick Westbrook-Akene.
03:37 And this route serves as basically a pick.
03:40 Okay.
03:41 And Nick Westbrook-Akene is about to run the wheel route up the sideline and his man is
03:47 here getting picked.
03:49 Tannehill has time.
03:51 All he has to do is lob it up.
03:54 Let Nick Westbrook-Akene run under it.
03:56 That's all he has to do.
03:58 But instead, I don't know.
03:59 Tannehill just, I mean, look at this.
04:02 Look at this.
04:05 He's got them beat.
04:06 He's got them beat to the end zone.
04:08 Why is this ball not being thrown?
04:11 Why?
04:12 I can't tell you and I don't understand.
04:14 And Tannehill has to try to make something happen.
04:17 And when you have one of the least mobile quarterbacks in the NFL now, that happens.
04:22 This one is another one where I guess I just don't understand the read by Tannehill.
04:29 On this one, he has three different options.
04:31 You can go to Burks down the sideline on the deep route, which honestly, I think the better
04:37 quarterbacks in the NFL, the more aggressive quarterbacks in the NFL would have taken that.
04:42 You can go to Chikokonkwo on the out route or you can just dump it off to Tajay Spears
04:45 in the flat here.
04:46 One, two, three.
04:48 Those are your options.
04:49 The Saints are in cover two defense.
04:51 And again, Tim Kelly calls the perfect route combination for what the defense is.
04:56 You got a hook defender, you got a flat defender, and then you got the deep half here.
05:00 Well, in my opinion, this safety is him too far inside.
05:05 And I think that Burks has the deep route.
05:09 I think you throw that pass and it's a touchdown to Traylen Burks.
05:12 If you don't want to throw that to Burks, dump it out to Spears.
05:17 Look, look at all this space.
05:19 Look at all this space.
05:20 Dump it out to him.
05:21 He's going to get five or six yards.
05:22 He might even make that cornerback miss and take it to the house.
05:25 Just dump it off.
05:26 The worst thing that you could do, the worst option is to throw this to Chigga Conqua.
05:32 That's the worst option you have.
05:33 And that's exactly what Tannehill does.
05:36 And it's an incompletion.
05:37 He's the most covered guy with the least space.
05:40 And once again, Traylen Burks, explosive play, touchdown, miss.
05:43 And speaking of Traylen Burks, look at this frustration.
05:46 Look at Burks.
05:48 Look at Burks right here about to run this route.
05:50 And this is third and six.
05:52 If Tannehill hits this quickly to Burks on the drag route, this is a first down.
05:57 And maybe, maybe even more.
06:01 Give your guys a chance to make a play.
06:04 Instead, Tannehill forces it to DeAndre Hopkins.
06:07 And look at that.
06:08 That ball is late.
06:10 That ball is behind.
06:12 Tannehill does not have the arm strength to make that throw like he once did.
06:17 Bad read and physical decline.
06:20 On third down when he could have got a first down, Traylen Burks on the drag route.
06:24 It's frustrating.
06:25 And speaking of Burks, three plays in a row.
06:27 Look at Burks here.
06:28 Look at Traylen Burks here.
06:32 Wide open.
06:33 There's a miscommunication on man coverage by Saints, and he's wide open.
06:37 This play was a three route play to attack man coverage on this side.
06:43 Tannehill bails on it and decides to force it to Hopkins, who is literally covered.
06:49 I mean, the cornerback has great position.
06:52 And here's another issue with Tannehill.
06:55 You got to throw this ball out in front of Hopkins and let him go up and get it.
06:58 I don't know if this is just a miscommunication and he thought back shoulder and they're off,
07:03 but how this ball isn't to Traylen Burks for a freaking wide open touchdown is just frustrating
07:10 for me.
07:11 And it has to be frustrating for Burks.
07:12 That's three plays in a row now where it's been obvious that he's been missed.
07:16 So on this one, this is a tough play for Ryan Tannehill to make.
07:24 But the problem is you can't make this throw.
07:29 You can't make this throw.
07:30 Look at this.
07:31 This is double covered.
07:33 These guys have Hopkins bracketed.
07:36 And if you're going to make this throw, you better throw it out here as far as possible
07:40 to the sideline where only Hopkins can go get it.
07:43 But Tannehill's decline in arm strength doesn't allow him to get the balls behind Hopkins.
07:49 Hopkins actually had some space deep, but the ball was underneath.
07:53 And my big problem with this is this is once again, the physical decline of Ryan Tannehill
07:59 here.
08:00 Because if you look at him in the pocket, he could just take a couple of steps and give
08:06 himself more room.
08:08 Step up right here.
08:10 Step up right here, right there.
08:13 That's what you got to do.
08:14 But he doesn't.
08:15 He stays where he's at and makes a tough throw with a guy on him.
08:20 I mean, look at this room right here.
08:22 You have space.
08:23 Why do that?
08:24 Why stay where you're at?
08:26 Take a quick step, set your feet and deliver.
08:30 I don't know.
08:31 I don't know.
08:32 It's frustrating stuff.
08:33 If I'm honest with you guys.
08:36 Moving to this next one, the last two plays that we have here are the misses.
08:40 There's not really a lot to talk about here, but I mean, this needs to be a touchdown.
08:46 And this is where the arm strength problems come back, in my opinion, because Tannehill
08:50 has missed some throws earlier in the game because he didn't throw it further enough,
08:53 his arm strength.
08:54 And I think that's in his head right now.
08:55 And he's like, man, I can't miss another one.
08:57 I got to throw this out here.
08:59 And he overthrows.
09:03 Unacceptable misses from a veteran quarterback.
09:04 And here is the last one, Itajay Spears.
09:07 Again, unacceptable misses.
09:10 Look at Spears.
09:11 Look at him running by.
09:13 Tannehill does not have to throw the ball the way that he's throwing the ball here trying
09:17 to do it like this.
09:18 He doesn't need to do this.
09:20 He could set his feet, get ready and make an easy throw to Spears down the sideline.
09:24 I mean, there's no one there.
09:26 This is a touchdown.
09:28 But a bad throw by Tannehill outside, too far up.
09:33 He's trying to push it out there so that, you know, he doesn't under throw it because
09:37 he's under thrown some passes.
09:38 So again, I thought it was even worse than what we saw on TV.
09:43 And it makes sense that Mike Rabel came out and said, we got to block better.
09:47 We got to get open.
09:48 And then on Monday, he said, Ryan has to play better.
09:51 And I don't know why he played so bad.
09:53 So that's my film breakdown of Ryan Tannehill from week one against the Saints.
