00:00 Tyler Roland here host of the locked on Titans podcast staff writer over at all Titans calm
00:04 I want to dive into Tim Kelly's offense from Sunday against the Saints
00:09 I know the Titans only scored 15 points
00:11 But I thought Tim Kelly did a really good job and one of the things that he was looking to do
00:14 Schematically was attack the Saints man coverage the Saints like to play man coverage and teams like to play man coverage against the Titans anyway
00:21 So it's a smart idea to try to go after that and what he was doing is
00:25 He was having a lot of people go to the opposite side of the formation and they would be crossing
00:30 across the formation either at the snap in motion or
00:34 Directly after the snap and we see that here what the Titans are gonna do is they're gonna bring
00:39 Trevon West go in motion across the formation and you can see that
00:43 Influence the entire Saints second level they all start going this way
00:48 So you're already knowing that you're gonna be able to influence the second level of the Saints defense with this motion
00:54 But it's not just West go coming across to get a block here
00:57 They also bring Chicago from the opposite side of the formation
01:00 Across and the thing is when you're in man coverage and we'll see it more as we continue to go through the tape here when you're
01:06 In man coverage that starts to bring certain defenders across the formation
01:11 You really have control of what these defenders are doing
01:13 So the Titans tried to take advantage of that in multiple ways shout out to Tim Kelly for that
01:18 But here's a really nice block
01:21 By the tight ends the offensive line opening up a hole for Derrick Henry here
01:26 You can see it from the end zone view really look
01:29 We got a double team right here by billiard and scuron ski double team in a displace
01:34 The defensive lineman West goes gonna come in and take the very first defender and then Jake's supposed to come through and get the second guy
01:42 He's trying to dig out the safety here and hopefully Derek Henry gets a gets a hole
01:47 He does get a little bit of a hole. It's not perfect. But these are good runs
01:51 These are productive and efficient runs for you picking up about five six seven yards. So nice stuff there early on
01:58 We're gonna see that here again
01:59 Look Trevon West go come in motion across the formation influence in the second level and then
02:05 Take a conque. Oh coming right behind him. It's the it's the same exact look but this time boom
02:11 Look at that this time it's play
02:14 Action and here's the thing when the Titans run these play action passes
02:17 We'll have burks run this deep route and then Hopkins running this intermediate route over the middle, right?
02:24 That's what the Titans like to do all the time
02:26 That's what you see
02:27 But I like the wrinkles that Tim Kelly is already putting in the offense to counter what teams expect because look at Hopkins boom
02:34 Goes to the outside. He leaves the cornerback on the ground
02:38 I mean, that's a great route from DeAndre Hopkins and you can tell that the Saints cornerback thought
02:43 Oh, I've seen this on tape. He's crossing over the middle and instead goes to the outside easy completion great gain
02:51 That's a first down play action pass that goes for about 15 yards
02:54 That is what the Tennessee Titans offense is all about and look
02:58 Here's the whole entire point though when you have West go coming in motion and looking like he's coming and then you have chick coming
03:04 across that looks exactly like
03:06 That looks exactly like that first run play that we talked about and that we showed so you got to make similar looks
03:13 And do different things off of them to confuse defenses in the NFL. So this is excellent stuff right here
03:19 Same thing same situation different players
03:24 we have motion by Hopkins across and then Nick Westbrook Akina is
03:28 Going as the chicken conch roll roll and coming across so they show the same thing and look at these defenders
03:34 Lattimore's trying to stay with
03:36 NWI this guy's over here with Hopkins
03:39 You're removing Saints defenders from the play by using their man coverage against them
03:44 So not a huge gain there
03:46 But I just like the design in general and you would like to think those things will work out now
03:51 This one gets a little squirrely. All right
03:53 They're gonna do opposite directions here and the Titans got to work on the timing of this either West go has to go in front
03:59 Or chick has to go behind
04:00 I think West go needs to go in front and then chick needs to go behind him
04:03 But they kind of chick tries to go a little too early. Maybe it's the other way around but either way they get a little
04:09 Cross there. So work on the timing on that but similar play coming back side and Derek Henry's able to find a gap
04:16 And get some good yards
04:17 So these are just the type of things that I like to see
04:20 From the Titans and I think Tim Kelly is doing a good job of let's let's scoot forward here
04:26 Cuz the next thing I want to talk about is Taj a Spears being used in jet motion
04:30 So we have three plays back-to-back where the Titans show this jet motion and now they're gonna weak side run
04:36 This was one of my favorite plays of the entire day
04:39 Motion away from the weak side and then run weak side zone watch Chris Hubbard cave in the defensive end here
04:48 Boom Brunskill moves this guy and there's nothing but space because the Titans if you go back and look the Titans brought the defender
04:56 Look at I believe that's a long tay Taylor number one. Look at him coming across the formation
05:01 You are removing a defender from the math problem on that side of the field by using them defense
05:07 The man defense against the Saints. That's what you're doing right there. So I love this stuff from Tim Kelly
05:13 I love it. And then Derek Henry stiff arm. Boom
05:15 Let's cut forward a little bit. Boom
05:18 Watch Henry stand over him a little bit to let him know. Oh, yeah, I love that right there
05:23 So same thing jet motion from Spears this time
05:28 You go to the strong side. All right, it's not a weak side run anymore
05:31 You're going to the strong side this time. You got the tight end up over here. You got the bunch over here
05:36 Not as productive of a run
05:39 But again, you're showing a similar look but running a different play to a different side and that's how you confuse defenses
05:45 Let's go to this last one here. All right got a little ahead of myself there, but let's go to this last one here
05:50 Taj a Spears again, it's gonna come in jet motion
05:55 Similar look same look same motion. Okay, right now
05:59 This play is exactly the same as the previous two plays which were run plays and let me point out this the Titans ran those
06:05 Previous two plays with Taj a Spears and jet motion in the first half. They didn't run this way
06:11 This was the Taj a Spears miss throw by Tannehill. They didn't run this until the fourth quarter
06:15 So they say they showed it early and then they saved it for late two runs early. Oh now it's play action
06:22 And look you have man coverage guys looking into the backfield here. He's looking in at Tannehill thinking
06:27 Oh, is he gonna run? Is he gonna keep it? I gotta I gotta be responsible for that and
06:31 Taj a Spears is able to run right past him. I mean, this is wonderful design
06:38 This is layering plays on top of each other. I love this from Tim Kelly
06:43 This is high level man, and that's an explosive play. That should be what a 60-yard touchdown
06:49 So many explosive plays created by Tim Kelly's designs here
06:53 They're just weren't executed properly and you don't want a dogpile on Tannehill
06:57 But at the end of the day a lot of it was the execution of the quarterback here. We have
07:01 DeAndre Hopkins and
07:04 Nick Westbrook Akina on the other side. All right
07:07 Hopkins gonna come in
07:10 Westbrook Akina is gonna run the wheel again the wheel route trying to attack what the Saints like to do
07:16 What are their tendencies? We're attacking them
07:18 This is a first down wheel route to attack and this my friends is a 30-yard touchdown
07:25 Look, the cornerback is looking inside
07:28 This guy has man on one
07:30 NWI but he's blocked by the natural rub route of DeAndre Hopkins
07:35 this ball in this pass needs to be just lobbed up just a touch throw out here and
07:39 NWI if he catches it, of course is running in for easy touchdown. Look at that
07:45 And he'll bails on it for some reason and and we're gone. Here's another one. Look at this. Look at this counter
07:51 So the Saints knew that the Titans were running these wheel routes. They were going after him
07:55 So they're gonna show the same thing wheel route with DeAndre Hopkins. That's what they're gonna show
08:01 Watch this Hopkins
08:04 But he put this hand up wheel route and then cuts it off to the out route
08:09 That's an adjustment and a counter to what team saw you do earlier in the game easy first down pitch and catch that
08:16 That's beautiful design. I love that
08:18 Let's talk about this next thing that stood out to me and it's the orbit motion of trailing Burks
08:23 So you bring Burks an orbit motion behind you run an inside zone
08:27 Gain some good yardage. I want to point this out
08:29 Watch this
08:32 And the influence on the second level
08:36 Here they go here they go here they go
08:39 Now look now look at the end you have
08:46 Higher Matthew defensive back Marshawn Lattimore defensive back
08:52 Offensive lineman this for
08:55 Against this for has to be a win for the Titans has to be win and it is a win
09:01 They get good yardage on inside zone the double team works
09:05 Henry's able to pop it inside because those DBS don't want to come in too far and that's a really good game for the Titans
09:10 So orbit motion from trailing Burks in the inside zone this next play didn't work out
09:15 But it's a similar look orbit motion from Burks. I really like the play design in general
09:22 All right, it's orbit motion look the same same thing. Look at all these guys crashing down right here
09:28 crashing down on it the play-action fake worked and
09:34 What we're looking for is inside route inside route this guy's got man on Burks again attacking man coverage
09:41 So if either of these wide receivers Hopkins or or NWI get open
09:46 This is an easy completion in a good game for the Titans
09:50 The problem is Alante Taylor is all over the Andre Hopkins, right? I mean all over
09:56 Absolutely all over him and this is NWI against Marshawn Lattimore
10:00 Who do you think is going to win the Titans need someone more talented to be that wide receiver right there then Nick Westbrook?
10:06 Akina no offense to NWI who had four catches 58 yards, but at the end of the day, they just need more talent there. So
10:13 Incompletion because NWI can't shake and that's Marshawn Latimore, but it just highlights the problem now
10:19 I want to talk about some stuff that was just pure creativity
10:22 From Tim Kelly that I was impressed with number one a little bit of King cat
10:28 Derrick Henry in the pistol with Taj a Spears love the look of this. I
10:31 Tweeted this out Derrick Henry should be taking this this to the end zone right now
10:36 There is a huge lane, but he tries to change direction and loses his balance and falls down
10:42 So great design by Tim Kelly should have been a touchdown for Derrick Henry or at least a big gain here more motion
10:50 From chick across the formation, but turn it into a reverse for trailing Burks get your best players the ball
10:57 I love that simple reverse nice reverse. I like to see that here. Look at trailing Burks in the slot
11:03 To run the crossing route and he's wide open. I mean he's wide open and this is first down in the red zone
11:12 It's a touchdown going after their man coverage attacking it. I get the throw to Hopkins. I really do
11:18 He is open as well. This this ball gets tipped at the line of scrimmage, but man
11:23 Look at Burke's and Burke's put his hands up. Look at Burke's with his hand up right now. He's so frustrated
11:28 He was so frustrated all day. It was so open
11:30 More stuff I like just the swing screen to Henry again get the ball on your best players hands and space
11:38 Get Henry rolling downhill. I like that play to get Derrick Henry involved in the passing game
11:43 here
11:45 This is the play-action crosser to chicken Conquo
11:48 I mean look how much separation that chicken Conquo has we talked about this in the Tannehill breakdown
11:53 So much separation. I mean, this is an explosive and explosive playoff play action that Tim Kelly created here
11:59 This is this should be a huge play. Boom
12:02 I mean chicken Conquo might catch that at 20 and be able to run in the end zone of Tannehill delivers it to him
12:07 So great design again by Tim Kelly here
12:09 I
12:12 Like this one, this is a quick RPO read it and you got the bubble screen to Burke's again
12:17 Get the ball and your best players hands and space
12:19 Burke's is able to pick up about five yards on first down. That's a productive play. This is the last play
12:25 This is the miss to
12:27 To chicken Conquo on the double reverse pass. I just want to mention the design here. You got Burke's on
12:32 Overout trying to draw everybody to this side of the field so that it opens up the space for chick here
12:39 I do want to mention that Mario Davis the inside linebacker from the Saints is absolutely freaking awesome
12:44 He was all over the place almost catches up a jig and maybe makes Tannehill a little nervous
12:48 But I still think a good throw. This is a walk-in touchdown for chicken Conquo
12:51 Great design by Tim Kelly overall is the point wanted to point that out Titans fans have a lot to be excited about with Tim
12:58 Kelly going forward into this year
