Bird cries for 'mama' after family dumps her
Transcript
00:00 Coco lived with a family for 20 years and was left at the sanctuary.
00:05 The family didn't want her anymore.
00:07 I don't know why.
00:08 After they left her there, she would cry.
00:11 She would call for mama.
00:14 I'm Tanita and this is Coco's story for GeoBeats.
00:23 When I spotted her, I fell in love right away.
00:28 She was a little wary at first, but she would open up as time went on.
00:33 She ended up falling in love with one of my other birds.
00:36 She's very mischievous, mostly a clown.
00:48 She loves to make me laugh.
00:49 If I'm laughing at what something she's doing, she'll do it again and again.
00:54 She loves my husband.
00:55 If he's cooking, she's right there.
00:57 She's always trying to get up in his business.
01:00 Hippity, hoppity, Coco's on her way.
01:04 She pulls her feathers out.
01:05 That's anxiety.
01:06 She'll be fully feathered by November and usually by January or February, she'll have
01:11 clipped them off.
01:12 This beautiful tail she has, it could be gone in five minutes.
01:15 She'll just clip, clip, clip.
01:18 After a year of growing them in.
01:19 Coco's really good though, right Coco?
01:22 Yeah.
01:24 She's had an unstable life and she worries that I'm going to leave her.
01:27 If our routine is interrupted, like she sees me leaving at a different time of day, I'll
01:32 come back and she'll have pulled out some feathers and trimmed a lot.
01:37 I had no idea that she was such a dancer and she does it to show off and mostly that's
01:42 what she does to entertain people or to entertain the other birds.
01:45 Good girl.
01:46 Some of the moves she does are quite complicated.
01:49 I'm like, how is she picking that up?
01:51 When we have people over, she thinks the parties are for her.
01:53 She's happy and you know it.
01:55 Jump up and down.
01:56 She's 30 years old.
01:57 She just had her big birthday celebration.
02:00 She has heart disease and she's on medications for her heart.
02:03 She's a miracle.
02:04 Careful.
02:05 Oh.
02:06 From her anxiety, she'll swallow things that she shouldn't swallow.
02:10 This is what it looks like to clean with Coco.
02:13 Last year, she had a stick stuck in her digestive tract and we have the best avian vet and she
02:18 was able to perform surgery and remove the stick and she survived that.
02:22 So she can't have anything she can swallow.
02:24 So she has to have stainless steel toys.
02:26 She plays with buttons a lot.
02:27 Coco, my whole life is like, oh, I gotta be careful what time I leave.
02:31 I don't want Coco to be in distress.
02:33 She would probably sit with me all day if I let her.
02:36 She's claimed me.
02:37 She's claimed the house.
02:38 She's claimed my husband.
02:39 This is Coco's world and we're living in it.
02:41 Coco, over here.
02:42 No more mamas?
02:43 Huh?
