Couple's first cat adoption doesn't go as expected
Transcript
00:00 We brought him home thinking cats would be so independent.
00:03 What are you doing buddy?
00:04 He was the exact opposite.
00:05 Alright, get him off.
00:06 I'm Alyssa and this is Wilbur's story for GeoBeats.
00:10 I decided to volunteer for a cat rescue and I started to fall in love with the idea of
00:14 cats.
00:15 My husband and I, we had very busy schedules at the time so we were like a cat would be
00:20 a good idea, a more independent animal.
00:24 He grew up without pets so it was just, we were just kind of going out on a limb.
00:29 Not long after that we found Wilbur online.
00:31 Him and his family, they found them out in the wild and they needed homes for them.
00:35 We reached out, we filled out his application and they told us he had been adopted and we
00:40 were devastated.
00:41 Hi Wilbur.
00:42 Wilbur.
00:43 And then the next day we were told that his adoption fell through and immediately we were
00:47 like we'll take him.
00:48 We thought he would be super independent, just kind of do his own thing.
00:51 He was the exact opposite of that.
00:53 You're so comfy there, aren't you?
00:55 I didn't personally spend the first few days with him.
00:57 I had to go and move about two hours away from my husband to start a job.
01:02 Hey Wilbur.
01:03 So he spent the time with him.
01:05 He was finishing up his med school.
01:07 So Wilbur would lay in my husband's lap while he studied.
01:09 Wilbur.
01:10 At night, Wilbur would just meow like crazy.
01:13 Wilbur had a little injured paw and my husband nurtured him back to health and they created
01:20 this just really loving and sweet bond from when Wilbur was a kitten.
01:24 I feel like my husband was waiting for this his whole life and he became such an awesome
01:28 cat dad.
01:29 The meowing at night made him nervous because he really needed to sleep for school.
01:32 But we got past the kitten stage and they've just been so great.
01:36 I'm coming.
01:37 They have these conversations back and forth.
01:39 I'm coming over.
01:40 So when my husband gets home from work, Wilbur will meow and then my husband will say something
01:46 like hey Wilbur.
01:47 It's totally just the two of them back and forth.
01:49 I'm coming.
01:50 I will stand there and say Wilbur and he will not even look at me.
01:57 Wilbur, look here.
01:59 My husband just raised him basically so it's really sweet.
02:02 Wilbur.
02:03 He's very emotionally aware when we're having a hard day.
02:06 He comes around immediately.
02:07 He is crazy clingy.
02:08 There you go baby.
02:09 Do it again.
02:10 Aww.
02:11 If we're going to bed, he's there.
02:12 If we're in the kitchen, he's there on the counter trying to get involved.
02:18 If we're on the couch watching a movie, he is there.
02:23 He'll stay there for an entire movie.
02:25 You don't think you're Wil-what?
02:28 You don't think you're Wilbur?
02:31 Really?
02:32 I don't think it's personal.
02:35 Wilbur.
02:36 Wilbur is exactly like a needy toddler.
02:40 Wilbur!
02:41 Hey Willy!
02:42 And I'm the second choice with Wilbur but I'll take it because I just love to see them
02:47 together.
