00:00 Titans fans it's time for another tic-tac Titans film breakdown
00:03 I'm Tyler Roland host of the locked on Titans podcast staff writer for Sports Illustrated over at all Titans calm
00:09 I want to take a look at second year linebacker Jack Gibbons
00:12 Gibbons has been a standout for the Titans through four games
00:16 The second year linebacker has done a great job from going from undrafted to starter for the Titans and he's been shown out
00:23 I want to take a look at his performance in week four against the Bengals because he kind of showed
00:27 Everything of what he can do for the Titans. We're gonna start with where he's been standing out the most and that's in coverage
00:33 So the Titans are going to be in a cover to coverage here
00:36 You got safety right here on the deep half
00:39 Safety right here on the deep half and what the Titans like to do when they play cover to rather than have both their linebackers
00:46 play over the middle
00:48 What they want to do is they want to change things up and have one of the linebackers
00:53 Be that over the middle defender and then have a linebacker run with
00:57 Anybody who runs a vertical route and we're gonna see the inside wide receiver run a vertical route here
01:04 That's a common thing when teams attack cover - they want to attack through the middle of the deep half
01:10 So what the Titans do is just a little schematic thing that they do each week
01:14 They have a vertical runner go with that route that likes to go in between cover - it's kind of something that they build in
01:20 To what they do in that coverage. So that's what happens here and Gibbons just does such an excellent job hanging with Tyler Boyd
01:27 The Bengals good slot receiver. He stays right in his hip pocket the whole way
01:31 He knows he's got over-the-top health from Kevin Bayard. So he stays underneath
01:35 He's not trying to beat him over the top show some pressure and then runs with him
01:39 This is an absolute dot from Joe Burrow - but the pressure from Gibbons prevents Boyd from bringing it in for a big play
01:47 I just wanted to show this angle because man Joe Burrow
01:50 What a dot gets it right to Boyd's outside hand but Gibbons being in his hip pocket on the front and
01:56 Occupying his front arm and giving him some pressure there doesn't allow him to get that other arm there and it turns into a drop
02:03 So that's just great coverage from Gibbons. We're gonna see good coverage from Gibbons here as well
02:08 and again, he has great instincts over the middle and
02:10 Jamar Chase is gonna sit down the Titans are in another cover -
02:14 Coverage here. They're gonna have a Monty hooker kind of come inside. This is another
02:19 Philosophical thing from the Titans if they're in cover - and there's nobody over here on this side
02:23 Then this deep half safety is gonna kind of creep into the middle
02:26 But again, you have Jack Gibbons in that same exact role
02:29 He's gonna stay with Jamar Chase here and Chase is looking to come sit down in the middle of the field and that's where a
02:34 Burrow wants to go we're gonna have
02:36 The corner route here, but both these guys are all over that
02:41 And here's one of the problems that the Titans have faced over a lot of years
02:44 The offensive line is so bad for the Bengals and they got to protect Burrow to get anything off that they got all
02:49 Of these people right here blocking and only two people
02:52 Out in the route, so it makes it difficult when you got to play offense like that something that the Titans know about
02:59 But again, you got Gibbons on Chase here
03:01 He's gonna stay with him stay on the inside knowing that he has underneath help and he does a good job of taking it away
03:06 Burrow has time right here to make a throw but there's nowhere to go and
03:10 That's that's part of the issue and that allows Aziz Alshire to get there
03:15 Knock the ball free and I won't even spend time debating what's a fumble and an incomplete pass
03:19 All I know is if you're the Titans, whatever it is, it's gonna be bad for you. So again you get this
03:24 Angle of it from the end zone
03:27 Tons of time for Joe Burrow Gibbons is right here though
03:30 With Jamar chase in the sit-down route trying to sit down in the middle of the coverage and cover to Gibbons takes that away
03:37 There's nowhere to go for Burrow. He's got to hold it. It allows the Titans pressure to get there
03:42 again fumble incomplete I
03:44 Don't know if you're the Titans you're wrong
03:47 But I want to take a look at
03:49 Gibbons in coverage here as well because one of the things that Mike Vrabel talked about all offseason when going between
03:55 Monty Rice and Jack Gibbons was Gibbons length Gibbons is six foot three
04:00 He's a longer player Monty Rice is the faster quicker player sideline to sideline
04:04 but the length that Gibbons has against the RPO game of the NFL is
04:10 Gonna be gonna be pretty valuable quite honestly, and we see it on display here in this play Gibbons
04:17 It's an RPO Burrow can hand it off right there to Joe Mixon or he can take it and he can throw
04:24 He can throw
04:26 So what Gibbons does is
04:28 Gibbons gets here in the throwing lane that Burrow wants to go to for this RPO
04:33 And I think that length is what Mike Vrabel was talking about and it shows up here
04:38 And this is where it's super important plays like this and Gibbons is gonna get up and knock the pass down boom
04:43 Knock it down
04:45 From this angle you can see it even better
04:47 Look at that length knocking that down
04:50 It's not an easy completion for five yards that annoys all of us every Sunday
04:54 That's Jack Gibbons length that Mike Vrabel has talked about so it shows up on tape what Mike Vrabel is saying
05:01 It's nice. This isn't like an excellent play in coverage or anything like that
05:05 But I just want to showcase when you're an undrafted linebacker. Okay. This is a screen pass going to Jamar Chase
05:12 He's got room
05:14 He makes a play but when you're an undrafted linebacker like Jack Gibbons and you're not the fastest and you're not the strongest
05:20 Plays like this effort like this. This is how you become a starter on a good team
05:27 He runs down Jamar Chase, and if he doesn't do that
05:32 Jamar Chase goes for a touchdown
05:34 So not like an incredible play like the first three or smart or anything
05:38 But it just the little things the little things that Jack Gibbons provides
05:41 I want to look at run defense here too because Gibbons has impressed me with his ability to fight through blocks
05:47 And we see it on this play here because Gibbons is gonna see the guard
05:51 67
05:53 Pull around and as soon as he does
05:55 He triggers boom
05:58 And he's going to make the play because he knows that is tape study that is quick diagnosis
06:04 You know again, not the biggest not the fastest not the strongest
06:08 But those are little things right here and Gibbons gets look at him get blocked
06:13 fights through the block and
06:15 Is in the gap to take down the running back? I
06:18 Mean, it's great stuff and you and you get even a better look at it here watch him trigger right away. Boom
06:24 Following the guard as the guard pulls over
06:27 The offensive tackle Jonah Williams. This is a first-round pick against Titans undrafted linebacker
06:34 He goes around him
06:36 fights through the block and
06:38 Is in the gap to make the play Harold Landry does a good job of coming up here and taking on the pooler quick
06:44 So that he can try to stop the running back in his tracks as far into the backfield as possible
06:49 That's a good job by Harold. Andry
06:51 Aziz comes over but they both aren't in position to necessarily make this play right away
06:56 so Gibbons is the guy that wins and beats that block and
07:01 Look he's the one who's in the gap in position. He's the one who won on the play to stop the run
07:08 Great job great job and we see it here as well. Great job by Gibbons
07:15 Everyone I don't want to say loses but isn't in position to make a play
07:20 Aziz is gonna step up and we're gonna have a lineman step up to take him
07:25 but Gibbons works through and the in the lineman that comes up to get get him Gibbons just is
07:29 Quicker and gets around him and is able to make a play
07:32 So this is the kind of stuff here that's been impressive 60 was 64
07:39 Yeah, can't get up to Gibbons here. You're gonna see it better from this angle
07:42 Look 64 is coming to get up to Gibbons. This lineman's coming up to get to Aziz
07:53 And Gibbons simply flows before it can get there and
07:56 He's the one who makes the play Aziz does a good job of coming off Orlando Brown and help him make the tackle as well
08:03 This is a great job of just filling his gap and that's something that Gibbons is good at as well
08:10 And again, you're an undrafted linebacker. You have to do
08:12 everything right
08:16 To overcome the circumstances fill your gap play your gap do your job
08:22 Gibbons
08:24 Gibbons does that here the lineman comes up to him. He meets him and he sheds he sheds a blocker. He sheds
08:30 Yes
08:32 Something Titans linebackers have not been good at and in
08:34 Recent years is getting off blocks once they get to him with the length of Gibbons using his arms
08:40 To keep offensive linemen off his body and then Aziz being a bigger linebacker as well
08:44 It's something that has improved drastically for the Titans this year Gibbons gets off the block and he's in the gap
08:50 Boom make the tackle play linebacker
08:53 Be in the right spot do your job be smart be physical
08:58 You're not the biggest strongest fastest, but you do have great length. So use your long arms keep guys off your body
09:06 shed and tackle
09:09 boom arms length shed
09:13 Tackle, I mean, I don't know if you could tell but this stuff gets me going. This is like the fourth play of coverage
09:21 This play isn't Gibbons making some incredible play like the first three in run defense
09:25 but this is just
09:27 This is just why Jack Gibbons went from undrafted to starting linebacker and playing well in the NFL
09:33 you see he moves the defensive line and he fills his gap and it forces Joe Mixon to the other side and
09:41 Aziz makes the play
09:43 Look at this watch watch right here
09:46 Jack Gibbons tell Jeffrey Simmons the undrafted second-year linebacker tells Jeffrey Simmons
09:52 Hey move over you're not in the right spot for this long this look from the Bengals line
09:58 Look at this move over move over. Okay, and let me point this out. This is
10:04 seven people
10:07 Right here against
10:12 The Titan six in the box, I mean Byrd's coming down but that's still seven on seven
10:18 The Titans don't care if you have the numbers advantage and you got a hat for a hat
10:22 They don't care about that because they have a smart linebacker and a great defensive line and look
10:29 Simmons Tart take the double teams
10:31 Because they're in position right where Gibbons put them
10:35 Gibbons fills his gap. You can't go there Joe
10:41 You got these four taking on these three
10:43 That's how you win. That's how you win and run defense in the NFL right there
10:48 those three guys holding their gap against four guys and
10:52 Then one and then I don't know why Orlando Browns more focused on Christian Fulton then then Aziz
10:58 That's a question for the Bengals not the Titans
11:01 But boom and then your other linebackers there to make a play and if he wants to go this way
11:04 Your safety is there too. I mean, this is magnificent run defense
11:09 Gibbons getting his defensive line lined up properly
11:14 Again, no one where you're supposed to be tape study
11:18 Understanding coverage using your length
11:21 Being physical shedding tackles always filling your gap telling your teammates where to beat
11:27 Gibbons is checking every single box and that's why he went from undrafted to starting linebacker
11:32 And that's why he's been one of the best players for the Titans through four weeks
11:35 So that's what I've seen from Jack Gibbons in coverage and in run defense for more
