00:00 Titans fans welcome to another tic-tac Titans film breakdown
00:03 I'm Tyler Roland host of the locked on Titans podcast staff writer for sports illustrated over at all Titans calm
00:09 I want to take a look at DeAndre Hopkins performance against the Indianapolis Colts
00:13 The Titans may have lost but it was Hopkins best day as a Tennessee Titans so far
00:17 He had eight catches 140 yards should have had a couple of touchdowns as well
00:22 I got a bunch of plays from Hopkins here
00:24 but I want to start with the two catches that he made on the Titans only touchdown drive of the day because
00:29 Hopkins was absolutely imperative to the Titans on the drive with two catches over 50 yards and what was on display all day
00:36 from Hopkins is his ability to
00:39 Beat zone coverage because the Colts are a zone heavy team and we see that on display here in the very first play
00:44 Hopkins is able to sit down in the hole in the zone give Ryan Tannehill in
00:49 Easy Avenue to throw the ball to him
00:52 He does a good job of kind of bouncing to the outside
00:54 Once he gets to the top of his route to give Tannehill even more room
00:58 We're gonna have a good angle on it here from the back of the end zone
01:02 Watch how Hopkins comes into the screen
01:03 Look how he sits down and what he's gonna do is he's gonna take kind of a bounce step to the outside
01:08 That gives him even a little bit more room from that linebacker
01:12 And we know he has room from the deep safety because of where he sat down
01:16 Tannehill is able to get a ball to him now if Tannehill didn't throw the pass so high and Hopkins didn't have to jump
01:23 Maybe Hopkins is able to catch this ball cleanly and turn up field and get a little bit more yards after catch
01:29 But either way a good completion. This is the very next play for the Titans
01:33 we're gonna see Hopkins on a deep crosser and
01:36 One of the big things that stood out for me was Hopkins ability to vary his speed to sell his routes
01:42 We're gonna see that here because Hopkins doesn't go full speed right here until he gets past
01:48 These second level defenders once he sees the back of the second level defender
01:53 then he kicks it into full gear to get across the screen and that's just sort of a
01:57 Nuance thing that a veteran wide receiver like DeAndre Hopkins is gonna show on a weekly basis. Look right here. He's leading up
02:04 He's leading up now
02:05 He's passed and he kicks it into high gear as he turns across the field
02:09 Great catch good ball by Ryan Tannehill as well to get that ball over Zaire Franklin
02:14 Franklin was great in run defense throughout the day, but he definitely struggled at times across the middle of the field in pass coverage
02:21 Again, there Hopkins hits the turbo button great catch right over the linebacker really good ball by Ryan Tannehill as well
02:30 we're gonna see more ability from DeAndre Hopkins to sit in zone coverage and kind of see his
02:37 Superstar ability to make incredible catches
02:40 So what the Titans like to do is run the play action and what they're selling here is they're selling a dagger concept
02:46 Where this guy's gonna go vertical and what you would see is Hopkins has come right here across the middle of the field
02:53 Well, one thing I do love about Tim Kelly is he's really great at turning defenses expectations on
02:59 Themselves and kind of doing the opposite of what teams expect
03:02 Team see the Titans go with play-action crossers over the middle of the field all the time
03:07 so like we saw in the very first play Hopkins sits down as a curl instead of going across the field and here
03:13 Instead of going across with the dagger concept and doing the deep in look how Hopkins sells the in
03:20 He sells inside here and then he's just gonna go back outside in between
03:26 These two Colts defenders. It's tremendous route running from DeAndre Hopkins
03:32 Boom and kicks out and then watch this catch so he turns his hips
03:35 Inside this way to cut on the route and then has to turn his hips back
03:40 Outside this way to make the catch and stay in bounds this sort of body control is why Hopkins has been one of the best
03:48 wide receivers
03:49 For the last generation of the NFL. I mean what an incredible catch
03:53 What a route really like seeing the DeAndre Hopkins catch from this angle
03:57 I mean look at how his hips are turning in between both guys holding the ball as he goes out of bounds. That is just
04:04 High level stuff from DeAndre Hopkins. Okay. I talked about Zaire Franklin just a second ago
04:11 And how he struggled over the middle of the field watch how nasty
04:14 This move is from Hopkins to completely shake Zaire Franklin over the middle of the field
04:21 So Hopkins comes into the middle of the field here and what he's trying to do is like we saw earlier
04:26 He's gonna come in and he wants to sit down right here because this guy is clear and vertical to get
04:32 These defensive backs out of the way and then Hopkins just wants to sit down
04:36 Right behind that vertical clear route and he should in theory have a hole in the zone now
04:42 Franklin does a good job of just turning around and finding Hopkins
04:45 He's just matching up with him in zone coverage and in theory
04:49 This is a good job
04:51 This is a good job by Franklin to turn around and find a guy who's trying to sit down behind you
04:56 But watch what Hopkins does he fakes inside and then goes back outside and he's wide open it
05:02 And I want to do it from this angle because not only can you see how Hopkins shakes Franklin in the middle of the field
05:08 But watch how Tannehill stands in and delivers the pass and waits for this
05:14 I mean Tannehill could dump this off to Henry. He could dump it off to Henry and
05:19 Get it out, but he waits and waits for Hopkins now
05:22 Sometimes that causes problems with Ryan Tannehill, but in this circumstance now watch Hopkins here Franklin finally has eyes on him
05:29 Watch right up here
05:31 Franklin finally has those eyes on him
05:35 Hopkins inside out
05:38 And Tannehill getting smashed
05:41 But still finding a way to deliver that ball to Hopkins big gain
05:49 Again Hopkins against zone coverage
05:51 Fantastic. We see here just gonna be Hopkins on the drag route
05:55 Watch how he starts slow and then increases his speed a gradual crescendo
06:00 And he ends up getting a matchup with a linebacker and it kind of can watch how the Colts kind of confuse this defense
06:07 This Colts defender is pointing this direction. They could 32 is gonna go with him Hopkins sees that and that's when he kind of kicks
06:14 That speed boost forward gets an open spot in the zone coverage catches a pass first down good gain into the red zone
06:22 Excellent stuff. I always love these end zone angles to see these throws Hopkins
06:28 Boom kicks in the speed good catch again could have been a better ball
06:31 Lead Hopkins out further but a completion now this pass isn't against zone coverage
06:37 we've been looking at zone coverage and Hopkins ability, but
06:41 Against physical press coverage on a slant route
06:44 Hopkins gets the job done here. I believe that's Juju Brents the rookie cornerback for the Colts
06:50 He was pretty good in this game as well, but he gives Hopkins good press coverage Hopkins wins the physical battle though
06:56 Just a slant route over the middle. Good job first down now
07:00 Hopkins should have had a couple of touchdowns and they were missed
07:04 and
07:07 One of them was with Hopkins out of the backfield like he is here now. This is a big completion. Look at Hopkins
07:14 staring straight at the linebacker
07:16 literally straight out of the linebacker coming out of the backfield and then Hopkins just gonna skirt get around right into the middle of these
07:23 guys and credit to Tannehill again
07:25 Waiting for it to happen waiting until it's open and making sure to deliver a good pass big catch
07:31 That's a third down that gets the Titans into the red zone
07:35 You see it really well from this angle as well. Look at Hopkins just boom right through good ball
07:41 Accurate ball by Ryan Tannehill who didn't have the best day ever but had a good day nonetheless
07:46 Now I wanted to show that because we go into this play and again
07:49 Like I said Hopkins should have had some touchdowns and this one
07:53 You can let me know you can fight me on it if you want to
07:56 But I think this should be a touchdown and if the Titans have a better quarterback, this is a touchdown
08:01 So Hopkins is gonna run just a vertical seam route in the red zone
08:05 Okay, and I think this is open and it requires just a touch of mobility and a little pocket maneuverability and navigation
08:13 But I just feel like this is a touchdown for for a lot of quarterbacks and a lot of teams
08:18 So right here you have all of these Colts defenders looking inside. This guy's dealing with him
08:24 They're looking inside Hopkins is gonna go through this seam and he is open
08:29 All right, Tannehill has time now what I will say here is
08:33 Skronsky is starting to give way and it's coming into Tannehill's lap
08:37 but there is a good seal right here and Tannehill should be able to take a couple steps up through this gap and
08:45 Drill this seam route home to DeAndre Hopkins that and maybe I'm asking for a lot
08:52 But I don't think I am from an NFL quarterback. Look at that seam for Tannehill here step up
08:57 Look these guys inside. There's no way they're getting to Hopkins back here. There's no way drill that thing home Tannehill
09:04 drill it home
09:07 Instead he doesn't he comes off it. Look Hopkins puts his hand up right here
09:11 I'm open. I'm open. I'm gonna it's gonna be there instead of Tannehill comes off of it
09:17 Throws it to Chikokonkwa who just pushed the defender off of him and gets called for pass interference on this
09:22 But I want to show up from the other angle because I know that this is critical of Tannehill and this is asking a great play
09:29 This isn't asking for a good play from the quarterback
09:31 This is asking for a great play from the quarterback, but you know what you need to win in the NFL a lot of times
09:36 So look to me
09:40 Take one slide step here into this lane and throw this ball
09:46 right here
09:49 fire it like
09:52 I just don't think that I'm asking too much
09:54 And we talked about red zone failures and that's that's part of it. This is the pass to Henry
10:02 this is just unfortunate because this is open and
10:05 Henry is just a little long and Hopkins can't get the feet down just a little long
10:11 So again, I think in my opinion Hopkins should have had two touchdowns
10:15 150 yards a couple more catches if we get a
10:20 Little bit better a little bit better passing, you know what I mean, whether it be Tannehill or be
10:26 Derrick Henry so not a bad day overall for DeAndre Hopkins his best day as a Titan could have been even better
10:33 But his ability to beat zone coverage is absolutely incredible and he can still be physical man as well
10:38 So that's DeAndre Hopkins in week 5 against the Indianapolis Colts
