Lonely chicken finally makes a friend
Transcript
00:00 Hi, cutie.
00:00 She was smaller than the rest of her flock,
00:02 and to avoid any bullying,
00:04 she would sleep on top of a seven-foot fence
00:07 all by herself at night.
00:08 I'm Tiffany, and this is Dot's story for GeoBeats.
00:12 Dot was found as a stray.
00:14 It's possible she was dumped.
00:16 Good chicken.
00:17 A rescue friend of mine adopted her,
00:19 but she didn't get along with other chickens,
00:21 so she was spending her time alone
00:23 at the top of a seven-foot fence.
00:26 That rescuer and myself ended up exchanging animals
00:29 so that Dot could come to stay with me.
00:31 My first meeting with Dot,
00:32 I was surprised at how skittish she was.
00:35 She was scared.
00:37 Hello, my pinky.
00:38 It took Dot a few months to really be comfortable enough
00:41 to come and sit with me and choose my company.
00:43 Hello, ma'am.
00:44 Oh, you're gonna wipe your beak on me?
00:47 But once she did, she came to rely on it.
00:49 So it was a daily thing that she would request and want,
00:52 and she would kind of get annoyed
00:54 if I wouldn't take the time to spend time with her
00:56 and talk with her.
00:57 You know, they make something called chicken food.
00:59 (chicken clucking)
01:00 She has a few ducks that like her.
01:02 You love your chicken, don't you?
01:04 (chicken clucking)
01:07 Chicken, she's not gonna pet your face.
01:12 If she runs around and gets too far away,
01:15 they'll perk up and make sure she comes back.
01:17 (chicken clucking)
01:20 Will you come see me?
01:23 I missed you today.
01:24 In the winters when she has dropped her feathers
01:27 and had to come stay in the house,
01:28 she'll choose to sleep not in her playpen,
01:30 but on the top of the refrigerator.
01:32 If it is to your liking, I offer my hand and you bite it.
01:36 Have a good night.
01:38 Good night.
01:39 Bite.
01:40 There you go.
01:40 Good night, little boogie.
01:42 Bite.
01:43 And then in the morning, she is an early riser.
01:45 Did you say something?
01:46 (chicken clucking)
01:50 Chicken, there you are.
01:54 She's a Belgian booted bantam,
01:55 which means she has kind of these bell-bottom
01:58 feathered feet.
01:59 Looks like she's wearing big slippers
02:00 and you can just hear her clip-clip
02:02 coming through the house.
02:03 But when she gets to the bedroom,
02:05 she will fly up onto the bed and ride up on you
02:08 to look in your face and tell you it's time to get up.
02:10 Wanna go see your duckies?
02:11 If I had to describe her to someone,
02:14 I would say she's like a giant lovable tornado
02:17 jam-packed down into a tiny feathered dinosaur.
02:20 Weighs less than a pound.
02:22 (chicken clucking)
02:26 (chicken clucking)
02:28 She's a good listener.
02:29 If I say a few words, I'll pause
02:31 and then she'll say a few clucks.
02:32 Hello.
02:33 Hello, when you come to see me.
02:36 Chicken.
02:37 She's not gonna pet your face.
02:39 Good chicken.
02:40 She's affectionate like a dog.
02:44 She comes.
02:45 If you take time to get to know them as individuals
02:48 and they let you inside of their flock,
02:50 you'll see what a rich, colorful world it is.
02:53 She's a sweet, caring friend
02:54 and I'm super happy that she's here with me
02:57 and the rest of the flock.
02:58 (chicken clucking)
03:03 You are not a rooster.
