Dog tastes freedom after spending whole life in crate
Transcript
00:00 More than likely, this little guy was kept in a crate his entire life.
00:04 I'm Roger and this is R2's story for GeoBeats.
00:07 Driving down a busy interstate, I was on the phone with my wife and I said, "Oh my gosh,
00:10 there is a puppy on the side of the road."
00:12 This little guy sat in the right lane of traffic.
00:15 I immediately pulled off and as soon as he saw me, he ran right to me.
00:18 Picked him up, put him in the car, and he immediately laid in my lap and went to sleep.
00:23 Like, immediately trusting, which was just insane to me.
00:26 Somebody asked me if I recorded it and I said I had no intention on doing anything like
00:31 that.
00:32 My number one goal was to get this little guy out of harm's way.
00:34 Poor guy was covered in ticks and fleas.
00:36 I picked up the phone and told my wife, "Get a hold of the vet.
00:39 We need to give this guy the best chance he's going to get."
00:42 Per the vet, unfortunately, he had spent his entire life in a crate.
00:46 I'm sitting here wondering how anybody could do that.
00:49 Why would they do that?
00:51 But this little guy's never, ever going to have to experience that again.
00:55 The vet gave him everything.
00:56 They were really super kind.
00:58 Look at this guy, like he owns the place.
01:00 A week and a half later, you would look at this dog and say, "You didn't find him on
01:03 the side of the road.
01:04 He's just a normal, regular pup living a good life."
01:06 Hi!
01:07 Hi!
01:08 Hi!
01:09 First taste of peanut butter.
01:10 We have a couple different theories.
01:11 I personally believe he was dumped there due to the countryside location that it was in.
01:16 Here's my beautiful wife.
01:17 The biggest thing I've noticed with him was grass.
01:20 He did not want to walk on grass, which is probably due to him not ever walking on it
01:25 and it feeling a little bit different on his feet.
01:28 We did get him used to that, though.
01:29 This doesn't seem like a big deal, but this is the first time this guy has been walking
01:32 on the grass without being totally freaked out.
01:36 Last night, first time ever sleeping in a bed.
01:40 The only thing we're dealing with right now, which we have to do physical therapy for every
01:44 day, because he was in the crate, his feet are very flat.
01:47 R2!
01:48 Come here, buddy!
01:49 So when he walks, you can actually hear his feet smack the ground.
01:52 So one way we're dealing with that is getting him on uneven surfaces, so his paws have to
01:56 kind of conform to that instead of a flat space.
01:59 But other than that, he's playing, he's running, he's jumping, he's living the puppy life.
02:04 He looks like a little deer fawn as he runs around because he's just kind of getting used
02:07 to that, too.
02:08 He looks like so many things in so many different angles.
02:12 We've done a DNA test.
02:13 I'm waiting for the results.
02:14 I can't wait to see what he is, but I do believe he's part Great Dane.
02:17 He has the ears, and I'm just looking forward to how he's going to grow and what he's going
02:21 to turn into.
02:22 Good job, buddy!
02:23 Good job!
02:24 His adaptation has been astounding to me.
02:27 It's been amazing the way he looks at the world, and then he has no fear and just conquers
02:31 it.
02:32 We have four total pups with him.
02:34 We've rescued a lot of animals, and he has that kind of one-in-a-million attitude of
02:38 a perfect dog for me, where he's calm, he's very good with people, he's very good with
02:42 other animals.
02:43 Hi, bud!
02:44 He's a boy.
02:45 We're going to have a big day today.
02:47 We're going to go to Home Depot.
02:49 He's just a loving little pup.
02:51 It's on your nose!
02:53 This little guy, so far, loves me the most.
02:56 However, with my daughter, it is very close second, and she's trying as hard as she can
03:00 to get this dog's love.
03:01 Buddy!
03:02 Your human sister loves you!
03:04 We'll see what happens in the future.
03:06 But this is the first time where I ever felt like I truly saved his life.
03:10 Grabbing him off the interstate, and I think that formed a special bond.
03:12 And then just the way he initially went to sleep on my lap and wants to be around me
03:17 and the way he wags his tail when I walk into a room.
03:19 He's got a little smile on his pretty little face.
03:22 I don't want anything to ever happen to this guy.
03:24 He slept right beside me all night, and yes, we did spoon a little bit.
03:28 He's officially been adopted.
03:29 I tried to play hardball at first with, "Oh, this is the fourth dog," and my wife says,
03:33 "There's no way you're going to let this dog go anywhere."
03:35 And I said, "I know.
03:36 Don't tell the kids."
