00:00 And from day one, I've been a booster of Peyton Pritchard.
00:03 And I'd love him to assert himself
00:08 and become a reliable guy off the bench,
00:11 doing what he does, shooting those threes.
00:13 It hasn't manifested itself yet this season,
00:16 although there were a couple of exhibition explosions
00:19 that got me very excited.
00:20 You know, I got 26 and 25,
00:22 and I'm saying, "Ah, it's gonna happen."
00:23 They're gonna, you know, and so far it hasn't happened
00:26 in the early part of this season,
00:29 in their first seven games.
00:31 But he would be the answer.
00:33 If he could be that guy,
00:35 that would be, I'd be very happy with that.
00:38 But, you know, you can't say it's gonna happen.
00:42 So, but they, the bench thing is a concern.
00:46 I mean, I go back to the fact that I was terrified
00:48 at the first two games of the season,
00:50 their bench production, 20 points total
00:52 in the first two games of the season.

01:20 Right now, new customers get $150 in bonus bets
01:24 with any winning $5 Moneyline bet.
01:28 That's 150 bucks if your team wins.
01:31 Okay, Bob, gonna talk about the Lakers
01:34 kicking things off here,
01:35 because right now you know who is out again.
01:38 You know, a hip injury with Anthony Davis,
01:41 and they're three and five.
01:43 - Yeah.
01:44 - And, but I know generally the rule of thumb
01:47 is with teams like this is like, okay, they're veterans.
01:50 You know, they'll come around, you know, playoff time.
01:54 They did last year.
01:55 Will they?
01:56 Or is time gonna catch up with these guys?
01:58 - I'm gonna run the risk on this Veterans Day weekend
02:04 to be, you know, cited Memorial Day weekend
02:10 as saying that Bob Ryan said back in November
02:12 that the Lakers were yesterday's news.
02:14 And I believe that.
02:15 They're yesterday's news.
02:17 They obsess everybody always.
02:20 That's understandable, the history of the Lakers.
02:23 And particularly since they, in this modern,
02:26 no doubt they have LeBron, they've had LeBron.
02:29 But I think they're yesterday's news.
02:31 And the new news, no new news is the fact that,
02:35 as you alluded to, their best player,
02:38 who is still, is Anthony Davis now,
02:40 or one of their two equal best players,
02:43 is unreliable, you know, physically.
02:46 Too bad, 'cause he's a wonderful player.
02:48 - Oh, he's great.
02:49 - He's a wonderful player.
02:50 I love watching him play.
02:51 He knows how to play, you know,
02:53 but he's perpetually hurt.
02:55 And anyway, I just think they're yesterday's news.
02:58 I just think they're in a West
03:01 where there's a lot of dangerous teams.
03:03 I think they're not a threat to anybody's security,
03:07 quite frankly.
03:08 - Well, even if they're healthy,
03:09 I don't know if they're the threat they once were.
03:13 - No, they're not.
03:14 I'm, that's what I'm saying.
03:15 I mean-
03:16 - Okay, so you're taking the injury out of the equation.
03:19 - Yeah, we're back to the,
03:21 who's the best team in town argument now again?
03:24 You know, even though the Clippers haven't done anything
03:26 since James, well, two games, that's not fair.
03:29 We'll see what they do.
03:29 Of course, there's another team
03:31 that you can't rely on the people to be there.
03:35 - Right.
03:35 - And of course, part of that is this
03:37 obsessive load management stuff that, you know,
03:40 that Kawhi has gotten into.
03:43 And anyway, but I've been back to Lakers.
03:45 No, they're just, you know,
03:47 they're just not that good, period.
03:49 But they're an object of great interest always.
03:52 As, you know, I also had a Celtics, you know,
03:53 these are the two ultimately iconic teams
03:56 in the history of the league.
03:57 They have dominated the league, you know,
04:00 in terms of championships more than any other two.
04:02 But yeah, I just think that I'm tired
04:06 of talking about the Lakers quite frankly,
04:08 until they do stand out.
04:09 I don't think they're going to do anything
04:10 to make us talk about them.
04:11 - Well, you know, I'm always of the theory
04:14 that a player should play as long as they want.
04:17 And I hear, have heard so many times
04:20 on sports radio and so forth,
04:22 oh, he's got to retire.
04:23 You know, we even heard it with Brady.
04:24 Brady should hang it up.
04:26 You know, I mean, what are you doing?
04:28 You know, did Bobby Orr play too long?
04:30 I mean, on and on and on.
04:32 You know what?
04:32 It's your life.
04:33 This is what they do.
04:34 So, you know, with LeBron, the question is going to be,
04:37 LeBron, if you guys don't have a shot at winning,
04:39 what are you doing it for?
04:40 Should you go produce movies?
04:41 Should you go, you know, do that sort of thing?
04:44 But he's still, I mean, he's still a top 20 player.
04:47 - Oh God, yeah.
04:48 No, he is.
04:49 - If you want to play, you know what, God,
04:51 play as long as you can.
04:53 - Well, you know, Brady's the ultimate example
04:56 in our modern time of that.
04:58 And you go back two generations or so,
05:00 when I was Gordie Howe.
05:02 You know, I watched him play hockey at 50
05:03 and he still was a good player.
05:05 So yeah, I see what you're saying.
05:07 And it's not like he's embarrassing himself.
05:09 This isn't. - No.
05:10 - You know, the great standard,
05:12 the sad great standard of one incident
05:15 that people refer to as the example
05:18 of what you don't want to be is Willie Mays
05:20 in the World Series.
05:22 - Right, Willie Mays.
05:23 - And you know, it's falling down.
05:25 And you don't want that.
05:26 That's the standard that you don't want.
05:28 Well, LeBron is far from that.
05:29 He's still a hell of a player.
05:31 - Of course.
05:31 - If he's not the player of 10 years ago, that's fine.
05:35 He's still, you're right.
05:36 He's a top fill in the blank player.
05:37 Is it 20?
05:38 Is it 15?
05:39 Is it 10?
05:40 Whatever, he's still a damn good player.
05:42 But you know, so he's not, you know,
05:43 he's still very good.
05:46 You know, no team would-
05:47 - I feel like, you know, I've always been a LeBron fan.
05:50 There have been some, you know, as a person,
05:53 look, I don't know if he's a cheap tipper.
05:55 Who knows?
05:56 We hear all these things.
05:57 (laughing)
05:58 Oh my God, he's a horrible tipper.
05:59 You know, we always heard that about Bird and blah, blah,
06:01 blah, blah.
06:02 Well, you know, if the only thing you could say bad
06:04 about a guy is that allegedly he was a horrible tipper
06:07 and that he did an ill-advised television show
06:10 to go to Miami, I mean, get over it.
06:13 You know?
06:14 - The decision.
06:15 - So what?
06:16 Get over it.
06:17 I mean, it looked bad.
06:18 It was bad.
06:19 Okay, move on.
06:20 I'm still a LeBron guy and I'm like,
06:22 dude, play as long as you want.
06:24 You know, I would love to see him get on a team
06:26 that could contend, you know,
06:28 where he could be part of something.
06:30 But he's had his run.
06:31 - He's had his day.
06:33 - He's had his day.
06:34 So it's not like he needs a title, right.
06:36 - He's had his trips in three cities.
06:38 Come on.
06:39 - Yeah, yeah, no, no.
06:40 You're in trouble.
06:42 Yeah, so, but I'm just saying the Lakers,
06:44 let's just, I just like to put a halt on that.
06:47 - Okay, we're done with the Lakers.
06:48 We'll go on to your new favorite team.
06:51 - Well, I'm curious,
06:52 the most intriguing, interesting story
06:55 that came out of nowhere,
06:56 is coming out of nowhere,
06:58 is some nights, you know,
06:59 disruptions that the Pacers are having.
07:02 - Right.
07:03 - I mean, you know, so far they've broken 140,
07:06 well, 143 on opening night, 152.
07:11 They've also given up 155 to the Celtics,
07:16 but they, you know, their scores,
07:18 I mean, this is un-Carlyle-like.
07:21 Rick Carlyle's, I don't know where this is coming from,
07:24 absolutely, but to me, you know,
07:27 that's been intriguing.
07:28 They're six and three,
07:30 and, you know, they,
07:31 you never know what you're gonna get out of this
07:34 on a given night with them,
07:35 but they haven't had,
07:36 they've had some big nights,
07:38 and so that's, I just find that interesting,
07:41 and I'm just curious, of all people,
07:42 'cause, you know, you don't think of Rick Carlyle
07:44 as a guy to be governing a team
07:46 that would score 140 points a game.
07:48 - Right. - In a game.
07:49 - No, no, no, right, right, right, right, right, right.
07:50 - No, no, they got a guy that I would like to get my,
07:53 I would have loved to have gotten my hands on, you know,
07:55 and we're gonna, you know,
07:57 we know the Celtics need,
07:58 they're not whole.
07:59 Then there's a couple of areas where they could improve,
08:04 and one of them would be scoring off the bench.
08:06 - Right.
08:07 - I would have loved to have gotten my hands on Buddy Heald,
08:10 and, you know, Buddy Heald is now 30 years old.
08:13 He's a career 16 points a game guy
08:15 and a career 40 point, 40% three-point shooter,
08:20 and he's out there doing his thing now for them very nicely,
08:24 and I would love to have gotten my hands on Buddy Heald.
08:26 I don't care if he couldn't guard a hat rack, you know,
08:28 we need that kind of guy,
08:30 and we, you know, they could well use a guy,
08:34 a sniper of that type.
08:35 - Oh, I mean, we'll see what happens
08:37 around the trade deadline.
08:37 It's in the hands of the Celts.
08:38 - Yeah, no, I'm just throwing it out there,
08:40 but, and by the way, I'm happy for Rick Carlisle.
08:42 I like him very much personally,
08:45 but boy, this is, it's just fun.
08:47 I mean, this comes out of nowhere,
08:49 the Pacers being a team that would run up 140.
08:53 - Score early this NFL season with FanDuel,

09:26 FanDuel, official partner of the NFL.
09:32 - The other guy that just popped up on the web
09:33 was Terrace Ross, who's available.
09:35 He is a shooter, can come off the bench.
09:38 He was with Orlando and Phoenix and he's available right now.
09:42 So I think, you know, we might start to hear his name.
09:44 - You know, I've always-- - Apparently not a household name.
09:46 Not a household name. - Yeah, no.
09:47 No, I've always, you know, I've been,
09:49 from day one, I've been a booster of Peyton Pritchard.
09:52 And I want, I'd love him to assert himself
09:57 and become a reliable guy off the bench,
10:00 doing what he does, shooting those threes.
10:02 It hasn't manifested itself yet this season,
10:05 although there were a couple of exhibition explosions
10:08 that got me very excited.
10:09 You know, I got 26 and 25 and I'm saying,
10:11 ah, it's gonna happen, they're gonna, you know,
10:13 and so far it hasn't happened in the early part
10:17 of this season, in their first seven games.
10:20 But he would be the answer, if he could be that guy,
10:24 that would be, I'd be very happy with that.
10:27 But, you know, you can't say it's gonna happen.
10:31 So, but they, the bench thing is a concern.
10:35 I mean, I go back to the fact that I was terrified
10:37 at the first two games of the season,
10:39 their bench production, 20 points total
10:41 in the first two games of the season.
10:43 Now in the big, in the aforementioned round of the Pacers,
10:45 the bench scored 69 points in that, you know,
10:49 fiasco of a game that was, you know.
10:52 So, you know, I, the truth is somewhere in the middle,
10:55 obviously, or closer to the 20 than the 69.
10:59 They, but they're gonna, you know,
11:01 I wanna see some consistent bench production.
11:04 - How soon do you think they'll try to pull the trigger?
11:07 Do you think this is gonna come down to the trade deadline
11:09 or is there something Brad needs to get on now?
11:11 - I would like to see him get on it now, you know.
11:14 And, you know, but, you know, if you go back
11:18 to the last truly great season we had in '07-'08,
11:22 they made late moves that were crucial.
11:26 And one of them was getting up P.J. Brown.
11:28 That was important.
11:30 But, you know, picking up Sam Tussauds
11:33 at the time they did was important.
11:35 And one little extra layer of protection that they had.
11:40 But they had a guy all year.
11:42 They had Eddie House.
11:44 - Well, I was gonna say Eddie House.
11:45 - We could get Eddie House back.
11:47 (laughs)
11:47 You know, that Eddie, the '07-'08 Eddie House
11:50 would be one, we're very welcome on this team.
11:53 I can tell you that.
11:54 - Well, a lot of times, you know, we'll talk about
11:56 when we're prognosticating about the playoffs and how,
11:59 well, you know, you don't need to mention the playoffs
12:01 and so forth.
12:01 And I understand it's about the stars,
12:02 but if you go to that year, as Phil Jackson said,
12:06 Leon Powe, right?
12:08 'Cause he was all pissed off.
12:10 - Oh yeah.
12:11 - That Leon Powe had a good game against them.
12:13 But Leon Powe came up, he came up big.
12:15 Eddie House came up big during that series.
12:17 And you just mentioned P.J. Brown made the shot.
12:20 He made the big shot, the winner game, whoever thought.
12:22 I love the story.
12:23 The story is, you know, about how he was truly recruited
12:27 by Paul Pierce specifically.
12:30 Saw him walking down the street.
12:33 I mean, it's just so true.
12:35 - In New Orleans, right?
12:36 In New Orleans.
12:37 - Yeah, rolled down the window and P.J. wondered,
12:40 who's yelling at me?
12:41 You know, saying, and it was Paul Pierce.
12:43 And that was the beginning of the romance.
12:46 And Paul Pierce recruited him and got,
12:49 and that's how he became a, he was a happily retired P.J.
12:54 And now he's a happy recipient of a,
12:56 owner of a championship ring.
12:58 - Yeah.
12:59 - Thanks to Paul Pierce.
13:00 - In what, he played 30 games or whatever?
13:02 I mean, that's good work if you can get it.
13:03 - But you love one, you know, one in particular
13:06 that they needed and, but no, he was important.
13:09 And so anyway, so things can happen.
13:11 Things can happen.
13:12 - I'm gonna put you on the spot.
13:14 I mean, the guy that comes to mind to me
13:16 is always downtown Freddie Brown with the Sonics,
13:18 but is there one bench player during the playoffs
13:21 that sticks out to you?
13:23 - Well.
13:24 - Oh, oh, oh, oh, Iguodala with Golden State.
13:27 - Iguodala got MVP in a final.
13:30 And congratulations to him now as the new interim,
13:32 if he is interim, we'll now know,
13:33 the director of the association.
13:36 Interesting guy always.
13:38 Well, the ultimate, for me, and for many of us in Boston,
13:43 he was more beloved, I think, in Boston
13:45 or is appreciated here more than anywhere else,
13:48 except his home city, was the microwave, Vinny.
13:51 - Vinny, oh, Vinny, Vinny, Vinny.
13:54 - To me, you start there.
13:56 That was the greatest,
13:57 I think that's the best offensive backcourt
13:59 in the history of the league.
14:01 - Right, those three.
14:02 - The three, the three of them,
14:03 but Isaiah, Joe Dumars, and Vinny,
14:05 when they were in their prime,
14:06 that was the greatest three-man offensive backcourt
14:09 that the NBA has ever seen.
14:11 And Vinny was, people don't realize,
14:16 you know who gave him the nickname, was Danny.
14:19 And it was after a game here in Boston,
14:21 and Danny said, "If they call that guy in Chicago,
14:25 "the refrigerator, we should call this guy the microwave
14:29 "because he heats up in a hurry."
14:31 - That's phenomenal.
14:32 - And that's Danny tying up two sports together there.
14:36 Of course, we're talking about refrigerator Perry,
14:38 in case people don't know.
14:39 And that's where Danny Daines gave him that nickname.
14:42 And I think it's one of,
14:43 it's as good a sports nickname as we've had in our lifetime.
14:47 It's a great nickname.
14:49 And it was so apt,
14:51 'cause Vinny came in, and Vinny off the bench,
14:55 and you can just put the two,
14:56 how, is it gonna be 20 seconds he's gonna score, 25?
14:59 And 'cause he was a fearless scorer,
15:01 I mean, he was fun, the microwave was,
15:03 and he's a good guy, by the way.
15:04 He was a great guy.
15:04 - Well, yeah, you know, that's the thing.
15:06 Like when you talk about Pritchard
15:07 and you talk about like Vinny,
15:09 like I, you know, he's one of the all-time greats,
15:12 but fearless is the key word, you know?
15:14 And that's when you come off the bench,
15:16 you're not warm, you're in for two, three seconds.
15:19 It's the hardest thing to do in sports.
15:21 You have to be fearless, you know?
15:24 No conscience.
15:25 I mean, even Ray was great.
15:26 Of course, Ray started,
15:28 but Ray would miss like 12 threes and hit the game winner.
15:30 You know?
15:31 - Oh yeah, well, he was, yeah.
15:32 - You gotta be, and that's, but you know,
15:34 Pritchard or anybody who wants to fill that role,
15:36 you have to be fearless and you have to have no memory.
