00:00Celtics is brought to you by price picks and the game time app
00:06Hey everyone, welcome in new addition to Celtics beat here on the CLNS media network
00:11We appreciate you if you are listening to the podcast, of course via any number of outlets where you get your podcast
00:18Make sure you subscribe or if you're watching if you're seeing us on the CLNS YouTube page
00:22Appreciate that as well. And if you are then you already know it's not just me. It's not just Devin Valenti
00:28We have the one the only Abbie chin here with us who always love when she graces us with her presence here on Celtic speed
00:36We yeah, you know
00:36We try not to bug her too often
00:38But it's a thrill when Abbie jumps on the season right around the corner when last we spoke
00:42Only a week ago. The Celtics were poised for their trip to Abu Dhabi. They go there blue doors against the Nuggets a couple of times
00:50I mean really the blowout and one of them the other one it was close either way they won both so, you know
00:55Obviously just utter domination of Nicola Jokic he's not made to compete with the Boston Celtics clearly
01:02I mean, it's it's written in stone, but no, obviously the preseason games were fun
01:07Abby I won welcome to
01:10I'm gonna say you weren't on that trip because I feel like I would have seen videos and social posts and whatever else so
01:17Maybe it's good that you got out of it. Maybe you long to go
01:19I'm not really sure but either way preseason games
01:23stateside right around the corner
01:25And it all starts with a back-to-back
01:27Saturday and Sunday quick turnaround and then the fifth and final preseason game is on Tuesday in Toronto
01:34So yes Celtics getting right after it. I was talking about it with people today at practice
01:39I feel like this is not done by mistake the Celtics wanted it this way
01:44They have a big chunk of time after that before the season opener on October 22nd
01:49So I feel like there must be a reason for this madness
01:53And I have to ask when because you know, sometimes we we plan these shows a couple days out
01:59Sometimes they sneak up on us and it's just like oh we should record a podcast today
02:03Who should we get on and you know reached out to Abby and fortunately she was around so that was wonderful
02:08But you know, you didn't get the like day before night before heads up
02:13Did you go home and change during your lunch break because I know it's it's very
02:17Important to you to look nice when Abby's around
02:20It's definitely in my my heading still on like my like a little profile info. It's Abby chin told me look nice one time
02:26No, I talked I texted you when we had Abby today that I had just so coincidentally worn my best suit to work today
02:33So just happen to where I have I don't know if I changed for Abby before I changed for Forsberg back in the day
02:40Like mid show I think it was for his because he had something really funky on and then I felt underdressed
02:45So in the middle of like one of his answers
02:47I went upstairs and in my closet at my house and pulled out like some dinner
02:52And threw it on because I felt slightly underdressed with Forsberg while he was talking and I'm shout-outs of Forsberg for just
02:59You felt slightly underdressed with Forsberg. Uh
03:02Look, Abby him and I text all the time about what he's wearing on television that night
03:06And I'm always very complimentary like even in the Abu Dhabi
03:09I didn't tell him this but I noted this the glasses frames and the shirt match that they always match. Yes
03:15Well done
03:16But we're gonna clothing store. Why would you have had to go home?
03:19I don't have to go home too often for things
03:21Sometimes if I want to like throw something weird on I can I have a lot of things
03:25Are we are you not allowed to shout it out? You can it's that's just you know
03:31Steve Valente's which is my dad's name and that's we've been here for 43 years if you didn't know by now
03:36I certainly do a lot of shows from here in the back office if people haven't realized this at this point
03:42But no Forsberg I he wore
03:44He was like just on TV. I caught him right after like, okay, he was still on set
03:49I think you might have walked in the background and he was still pretty dressed ups and I like it was one of those rare
03:55Days, I was home like Sunday and like a sweater
03:58And I just felt like I wasn't really bringing it giving it my all and Forsberg was really making me look bad
04:04So I couldn't have that at all at all, you know
04:08Things I don't have to worry about on a show with you at all. No, I am I am
04:13Dressed. I mean, I'm wearing a Superman t-shirt for people listening not watching
04:17So yeah, this is this is about as nice as it gets a sweatpants. I mean, I I'll I'll put something
04:24Some I hesitate to even use the term nicer somewhat more respectable if I'm like going out to pick the kids up at school
04:31But other if I'm professional as I am right now, this is this is as nice as it gets. I'm sorry
04:36I'm not gonna dress up for Abby. She understands. She knows me. She gets it
04:40I almost wore my Derek white
04:43t-shirt, but then I felt like it was you'd only see part of it and it just looked like weird, but
04:49So I'm not boring instead. Sorry. Well, I
04:53Know I invited this but talk about the definition of the start to an offseason show nevertheless
04:58The season is right around the corner. Of course, you know later this month
05:02Not even a couple of weeks away at this point in time. It's exciting
05:06one of the exciting things we had greenie on Dan Greenberg from barstool last week and
05:11one of the things that we began that show with was Celtics porn and how he is just spending his offseason Abby watching
05:18you know reruns of
05:21Celtics finals games of big games during the regular season or throughout that playoff run
05:26He's you know
05:27You're probably part of it because he's like binging media day
05:31Interviews and and all that like it's just all wall-to-wall Celtics content when the man can't sleep even if he can he's you know
05:38Forcing his eyelids open to consume all things Celtics for the 97th time that he has seen it. I respect it
05:44I respect the love the drive the passion but now and he's been tweeting for anyone that hasn't noticed
05:51There's there's new hotness
05:53There's a new obsession for people out there and that is the Netflix series starting five, which I have not yet started
05:59I know F here has have you taken a dive into this yet?
06:02Cuz Jason Tatum as we know or as I think people know prominently featured. I
06:07Watched the first 30 minutes last night was all I could get through before after bedtime putting the kids to bed and then before
06:14my own bedtime
06:16Which obviously is gonna start getting later and later once again now that the season is here but uh
06:21Super I'm excited about it. I
06:25The LeBron stuff is a lot on the beginning and so that to get through that
06:32And better Abby just to tell you there's more there's more LeBron stuff coming just to be frankly
06:36I know and it's it's his production company, right?
06:39Like obviously it's gonna be but it also was the hot topic at practice today
06:43Jason Tatum spoke after practice and I think one of the things I thought was awesome and something
06:49That the producers have promised is that we will get to see more of him
06:52than we usually do and
06:54Part of that is because one of the main photographers. His name is Brett Hampton
06:58He works for the Celtics, but he also is super close with Jason and really travels everywhere with him
07:03and so Jason said bread was the one who captured a lot of those behind the scenes clips at home and with deuce and that's
07:10Awesome to me because I feel like we really will get to see
07:13an authentic side of Jason that maybe we don't get to see all the time because he's so comfortable with bread and he's used to
07:19Having bread around with a camera and so is deuce and so is his entire family. And so
07:24I I think we will get to see a lot
07:27More of Jason than we do in a regular basis
07:29But the other thing he said that was really cool is that when they first approached him about it
07:33Uh, he said he spoke with LeBron and LeBron said, you know
07:36There is going to be a season two and if you wanted to be the star of season two
07:40I understand if you want to wait and Jason said no, I want to be I want to be a part of the first one
07:44And so, um
07:46I think that's really cool. I mean number one that he was offered that but number two that he really
07:52Wanted to be a part of it. And so then he's invested and I feel like we will get to see a lot of
07:58Who he is to say I caught that quote too and part of it ev was, you know, everything that abby just said but also
08:04That he's like and I you know, I I felt like we were going to win the championship and we did
08:08You know as people get through the whatever eight nine ten episodes, however many episodes of this thing there are
08:13You know, it's it's just that build-up for anyone that's watched like quarterback or receiver the other netflix series in the nfl
08:19It's the build-up throughout the year and I mean how wonderful
08:22That the one celtic that is prominently featured of the five guys that they have in here
08:27It does culminate with banner 18. It's it's yeah
08:31He mentioned that he's a big fan of the nfl and he's a big fan of the nfl
08:36It's it's yeah
08:38He mentioned he fast-forwarded episode 10 to kind of he said he went straight to 10. Yeah
08:42I didn't I didn't do that and i'm avoiding a lot of the clips as much as I can because I just do on
08:47Want to experience it authentically and see things like kind of with fresh eyes
08:51Are all the episodes out or are they released? Yeah, they released it all at once. Yeah
08:55I'm on episode. You've got some late night binging on the way out
08:59i'm not all the way through i'm on episode three right now and and it's
09:02Uh, I think I left off with sabona somewhere
09:04But there is a lot still to kind of comb through and farm through there was the obvious clips that have gone crazy with
09:11Uh, we we had the first game against the wolves in minnesota. That was a great game
09:16Um and and you know, obviously talked a little bit after about how you know, jason's the bet. No, he's not like all the stuff
09:21It's a lot a lot of trash talk that you expect after winning the game like that
09:25um, but like it's it's
09:27it's great and like
09:29What I love this summer has been kind of like the summer of the jays
09:32You know, you have this show with netflix you have better or worse
09:36Well, you have jaylen brown who was on hot ones, which again, we don't get to see a ton of jaylen brown
09:41Doing stuff like that unless you've watched his video series on youtube, which I did back in the day. I loved them
09:47I thought they were great
09:48um, but you get like a different side of jaylen a little bit, you know, he opens up about a few things which is I think
09:54Valuable to us who are looking to get a little bit more inside the minds of these two guys
09:59Abby, you can speak to this better than the both of us can like these two guys. There's all this conversation in the
10:06twitter sphere x sphere, whatever sphere about
10:09Are these two guys actually friends but they get a lot of blah blah and it's like yeah
10:12They're people that know them again. They're very friendly off the court. They just don't like to
10:16Show everybody and so now we get a better look at who these guys really are
10:21And for people that have covered the team
10:23For as long as they've been around it's like we're still kind of finding out
10:27Who they really are behind closed doors and it's been a nice
10:31Opening experience. I mean I again I haven't gone through all the the starting five stuff yet
10:35I'm still rifling through it. Can't wait to get done with it
10:38um, but like jaylen on hot ones was like literally my favorite thing like I
10:43Abby, uh kaufman I discussed how I could get a run of wings
10:47To discuss the hot ones episode if I could find it do that i've done that for the content
10:53Um, but like and then tatum, you know
10:55You get to see like inside his mind a little bit and like the clips that have gone viral were mostly about
11:01like today was a great example of
11:03Oh people thought you know
11:04I thought people were trolling us that they they didn't think we had a shot against the mavericks
11:08Like I couldn't believe
11:09How many people were actually picking against us and it's like yeah
11:12I'm glad he heard all that stuff because it was driving me crazy. He was driving kaufman crazy
11:16Yeah, i'm sure it was driving you crazy at the same time
11:18um is this I guess
11:21You have a better understanding of who these guys are than most people but yet
11:25Are you still itching for content like this, even though you spend a lot of your time with them throughout the regular season?
11:31Yeah, I think something else that came up for practice today
11:33Gary washburn of the globe who I know you guys have on asked him, you know
11:37When you see the side by sides of jason from year one when he was just 19 years old to now
11:43It going into season eight and then season nine for jaylen brown. It really
11:48hit home for me that
11:51These guys are still evolving. We think of them as these superstar super humans, which is true
11:56but they're also still just people and came into the league so young and are just now
12:02on the cusp of their peak as athletes, but just as humans becoming into their own and figuring out
12:10What platform they have who they want to be who they are at home
12:13Um, and and jason I told this story recently. It was so funny that first season. I
12:18Distinctly remember that practice in december when he was he came in we were talking to him like a regular post-game
12:25Press conference presser. It's not a presser group interview
12:28And uh, he just mentioned well, you know, i'm a dad now and it changes my perspective and we all were like what?
12:33What when did when did that happen?
12:36and um to see how he has evolved as a father and involving deuce and all that and deuce also
12:41Hugely prominent in the netflix starting five
12:44um, but so I do I think that
12:47We are all learning about them and learning more about them and I certainly have an appetite for that, but there's also
12:55this
12:56They are different people than they were then and and the fact that they are more open and more willing
13:01And able even to really be themselves and be open and authentic in these situations
13:07I think speaks volumes about how much they have each grown
13:11And I am excited to see who they are as people now off the floor
13:15And then also who they will become in eight more years or whatever that is
13:20Yeah, it's interesting. I I was thinking i'm glad you brought that up because I was thinking earlier about how
13:26I don't and and i'm I don't know if this is representative of most fans
13:30Maybe more fans are sort of interested in the the tmz lifestyle if you will of jason tatum
13:36I i'm not and I don't say that in a dismissive way. I mean, I just don't like seek it out
13:40You know what?
13:41I mean, like I i'm basketball obsessed with tatum, but I and I I love like all things deuce
13:47it's entertaining and and he's adorable and you know as a
13:52a dad with three sons like that, you know some of it's very relatable like so all that's great, but
13:58You know, there was the I don't remember if he announced this or if it was just on social media or whatever
14:03But that he's having another kid, you know to tape the two names on the shoes and abu dhabi, right?
14:08Yeah, so like tatum deuce if you will as opposed to deuce tatum
14:12And I but like I I I saw that and I found myself thinking abby
14:16I was like, wow, like you always see, you know, brandy his mom, you know, you always see her you always see deuce but
14:23I couldn't have told you if tatum had a partner, you know
14:27I I couldn't right now tell you if the mother of this next child is deuce's mom
14:32Like I don't know anything in that way about tatum's personal life
14:36you know, we see the you know, all things again basketball or sneakers or he's over at like
14:42You know ruben's white party or he's hanging out with jay-z at this or he's part of jordan brand and you know
14:48Netflix or cover of nba 2k or all these things that that you're supposed to see and that he wants you to see
14:55but some of this other stuff
14:57I don't know anything about the guy not that i'm entitled to or need to I just you know
15:01Some of that stuff is so subtle other than deuce, you know always being around that. I don't know
15:07I I find that I don't even really think about it
15:11I am a reporter first
15:12So obviously i'm curious but that is not does not fall under the under the purview of my job
15:19And I don't know it might be different. Um
15:22If I worked for another station another producer, but my producer likes to keep it hoot and I
15:28completely respect that and appreciate that about him, so
15:31um, while I I do enjoy gossip as much as the next person that that does not unless it's affecting his play on the
15:39floor, which
15:40It that has not been an issue for anyone on this team at all ever
15:45um
15:48And I think that when it does become something we try and talk about it and and we try and
15:53kind of figure out what those things are, but you're right I I do think it's
15:57It's a respect thing in boston, which I appreciate and I think that people kind of let you
16:04Live your life off the floor but are happy to talk about any and everything that happens
16:09on the court and that has to do with the boston celtics, but
16:13um
16:14Yeah, I think unless
16:15Unless he's willing to open up and talk about how it's affecting him doing his job
16:20Then I I don't see it as part of my job to report upon it
16:25Kaufman one of the things you're going to find out as you because you're going to watch this eventually i'm assuming
16:30Oh sooner than later for sure. I just the thing dropped like two days ago, didn't it?
16:34So I haven't gotten into it yet 10 hours of content for people with get on it
16:40Yeah, yeah, um, we're not finished it by now god it's killing me personally actually but
16:45um, one of the things I thought was interesting because we don't get too much into the
16:49Like what it takes to become a basketball player and what these guys do to stay at the level and lebron has talked about this
16:55About what he does with his body and he does mention like the number I spend on my body
16:59None of you will actually ever know the number is not real
17:02But just keep that aside over here
17:04One of the things that I liked, uh in the show is, you know
17:07Tatum, obviously very open about his love for kobe bryant and the drive
17:11That kobe's, you know mentality instilled in jason
17:16Look, I know jason's one of the best seven guys on the planet playing basketball
17:21That guy still gets up and is at the gym at six o'clock in the morning five o'clock in the morning every day to get
17:26better
17:27and that's the stuff where like
17:30You yeah, he's a great father. He's you know
17:33He's obviously an awesome teammate
17:35but then he's got time to work on himself too in the morning and just
17:38Just shoot around work on his skills and like
17:40As we try and bring this back to basketball a little bit
17:42One of the things that I really liked coffin and I think you'll enjoy this too
17:46It's just like the the grind of of being jason tatum getting up in the morning getting your body ready to to play
17:53but also
17:54you know putting the practice time in the stuff after practice where you take care of yourself like
17:58All the stuff that you'd want him to do
18:00he's
18:01Doing and again, he's done it without any of us really knowing what's going on, right?
18:05Like and i'm not trying to paint in a bad light here because i'm not
18:10But there's like if you watch the show
18:13There is a difference in the way that jason tatum leads his life and lives his life in the way ant lives his and i'm not
18:19Saying either one of them is bad
18:21But as someone who follows jason tatum, it's like man
18:24It's really interesting to watch like this guy finds time for like certain things and it's either
18:30Family related or basketball related and everything else like doesn't matter and as someone
18:36who watches this team all the time and is someone who is
18:40Focused on the success of this team like having tatum drive the car so to speak
18:44You got to feel good with that guy behind the wheel and this metaphor that i've painted for you
18:48But maybe i'm abby you tell me like maybe i'm being a dick when I say this but isn't
18:54Like shouldn't that be expected?
18:55I mean, I don't know how ant lives his life and obviously we've seen some guys not take their profession as seriously
19:01The james harden of the world's letting themselves get you know bigger out of shape
19:05Especially after they've been around for a while and cashed in but you know
19:08If you're paid the way that tatum is and you are the face of the franchise
19:12You are the number one due respect to jaylen brown
19:15You are chasing celtics legends and being a celtics legend and winning multiple championships
19:21You want to be that guy that face of the nba if you have that drive to
19:26you know
19:28Say x y and z, you know sort of talk the big game for all this time
19:33I sort of feel like you have to deliver like to me, you know
19:36Getting up at six in the morning going to the gym and practicing outside of your team practice
19:40Just practicing on your own or with your trainer or whoever you're doing it with like
19:44I don't know like he better be doing that. I i'm not I
19:49I guess I maybe I should be more impressed by it
19:51I feel like that should be an expectation and i'm i'm proud that he meets that expectation
19:56but I don't necessarily
19:58I need to watch it I guess but the way you've presented it. I don't feel like I should be like throwing him flowers for it
20:06I just think that's what makes
20:08The great ones who they are right is that they have that drive that initiative
20:13They not only are they in the gym at 6 a.m. They want to be there and they enjoy it
20:18It's it's a way of life, but I think it's also
20:22super important and makes those earlier experiences
20:26So much more valuable. I mean
20:28Going being a part of team usa four years ago or then even being part of the select team
20:34The years before that and going to those camps and seeing how lebron james works what he does in his routine
20:41And even watching an al horford who we know works incredibly hard
20:45But is super efficient in what he does and every single thing that he does is with a purpose
20:51and
20:52I think that
20:53Everybody does it differently. Obviously, there's no two ways are the same
20:57Everybody's body is different and these are the things that works for jason, but he has
21:03Done everything he can to figure that out and hone
21:06That sort of routine that works best for him and clearly it is working
21:11The celtics bring home banner number 18, but I can speak to that evan
21:15I mean, I see jason when we're on the road at every shoot around
21:19He is the last guy to leave the gym. You see him in the hotel gyms working out
21:25every day game day or not and
21:28um
21:29it's just
21:30it it's a lifestyle and
21:33It's what I think differentiates people so we'll see
21:37What happens and and how anthony edwards career trajectory ends up?
21:43But jason obviously
21:45Is doing everything that he can to become one of the greats who he has talked so much about
21:50this summer and people who he is looking up to particularly in the celtics organization, not
21:55just the kobe bryants, but
21:57the larry birds and the bill russells and
22:01Let living up to the expectations that you're talking about adam that are absolutely the baseline when you play
22:08Here in boston and when you play for the boston celtics

23:51But yeah, it's like it's just not universal coffee like that. Everybody does it's not I mean look at luka
23:56I mean, he's an incredible player, but he's you know good and to abby's point like bodies are different
24:01But he's got a beer gut he's drinking a beer after a game like yeah people care for themselves differently
24:06so I I
24:08Appreciate what tatum does to?
24:10You know keep himself in in the just peak physical condition that the vast majority of us me
24:16especially are not in but at the same time I I
24:21I don't know. I I I feel like he's he's set up. He's he's choreographed
24:26Through all the things that he's said and done throughout the years that he's going to be that guy. So now to me
24:31Go be that guy and I I guess you know, i'm glad he hasn't taken his foot off the gas, but um
24:37Again, I I for lack of a better word. I've used it already. I I like it. It's like he's meeting expectations
24:45Well, that's what you say to your children when they
24:48Come home and start doing their homework right away way to meet expectations
24:52Yeah, get your crap done and then you can go ahead of your screen time and play. This is boston, man
24:57It's like a championship
24:59Yeah, but it's not the same in every city like there's not that pressure of and maybe that's part of the pressure
25:04of trying to be
25:06Because he has the opportunity to be one of the greats, you know
25:09Not just of his generation but in like basketball history considering what he's done at such a young age
25:13I just I like the fact that he hasn't lost
25:17Track of that or sight of that. He's still on that trajectory to maintain that and again you look around look around the league at
25:24You know faces of franchises around the league. Not everybody does that stuff
25:27That's what separates the the great from the elite, you know
25:30that's that's what like tom brady was insane because 365 days of year his schedule was set to
25:37Getting his body right to play football in the regular season. Lebron's very similarly like not everybody's wired that way
25:43and it's just nice that we seem to follow a guy that's wired that way and
25:48And that's it's just encouraging for the future of this franchise because they just handed him
25:52You know what the biggest extension in nba history until whoever breaks the next offseason breaks it, you know what I mean?
25:58It's you know, a lot of people gave jaylen a lot of a hard time for his contract, right?
26:02Oh my how could you give jaylen 300 million dollars?
26:05Well, guess what?
26:06He backed that up with people that still don't understand the whole like it's not about the money
26:10It's percentage of cap like until people get that through their heads and and understand just the price of doing business
26:16That's what you do. He is worth that right if you're not going to pay him he's gone like you have to pay him
26:23But that's not that wasn't the point people were making it was like how could you give jaylen brown
26:27X amount of money per year it was because he's awesome
26:31And to abby's point that's the cost of doing business, but he also backed you up by winning nba championship being
26:38The best guy on the team pending who you ask in the most important games of the year in the eastern conference finals
26:44He was the mvp of that series and he was the mvp of the nba finals. So after everybody
26:50Trashed him in the offseason over
26:52Oh, how could you hand jaylen brown that much money?
26:55He was like i'm worth this much money and he backed it up
26:58Now how many times have you gone throughout a segment throughout, you know espn throughout the day of guys?
27:03Oh, how could you pay mike trout? How are you paying mike trout this much money, etc, etc, etc
27:09There's so much talk about money and the the money athletes make in today's world
27:14This is a just a soapbox I get on because every time I used to call on radio
27:18Everyone would just scream about how much money these guys are making and I don't want to get to that point
27:22But there's a lot of conversations about how much these guys make and are they really worth that about a lot?
27:27Both of these guys who are faces of this franchise clearly put the time in
27:32To be not only just be awesome
27:34But to get better every single year and I just want to commend that and I think it's something we should celebrate
27:39Because this isn't this isn't not every fan base coffins having this conversation
27:43Well, and I think that's the point and abby alluded to this before and and I think it's a very good point
27:49It's not a a new point, but it is something that I don't think we really talk enough about which is that
27:55Just being in the nba
27:57Isn't being in the nba and i'm not even talking about the level of player which clearly there's a hierarchy there. I'm talking about
28:04Where you are like winning in boston versus winning in because we were talking about ant minnesota
28:11being a celtics legend being a timberwolves legend like the
28:14Apples and oranges these are not the same thing and I do appreciate that
28:19someone like tatum someone like brown some of the other guys that are less heralded and
28:24You know have have not achieved what those guys have achieved on an individual level in boston aren't asked to because their roles are different
28:32There's an understanding here that you know
28:34Like I grew up with have you grew up with you know, abby you've been around it for many many years
28:39You fully understand it. You're around it at a much closer level to
28:45These guys that are trying to live up to it
28:47You know, I I that's that's I think maybe the bigger thing of all of this is that tatum
28:52is doing all those things that we outline that he needs to do because
28:57it just
28:59People will come after me for putting it this way, but it just means more here
29:04And in cities like this boston's not the only one
29:08than it does in many other places you brought up football before ev like
29:13Tom brady created that for the patriots. He didn't walk into it
29:17but winning as a patriot now
29:21Has a certain meaning that obviously didn't pre-tom brady, but if brady was never a patriot
29:27That exists, you know in places where that was previously created if if brady like brady being a buccaneer
29:33For his career or for a segment of his career longer than he was
29:38That isn't necessarily of the magnitude as like man if he had won as a niner as a stealer as a cowboy
29:45You know what? I mean some of these franchises and winning there in those respective leagues. It just means more abby
29:53I would agree with that. I think
29:55number one, I loved uh, tom brady's clap back at baker mayfield and
30:00I think that goes directly to evan's point is that some people are just built different and
30:06that difference could be the difference between winning a championship and coming up short and so
30:14Yes, I think that winning in boston
30:17Is different. I also just feel like
30:20You there's a different
30:22Air around this team this season in the gym and it's only been a week or so that we've been in
30:29but it does feel
30:31lighter and more joyful and just
30:35There is
30:37I asked jay scrub who the celtics just signed yesterday about this and he said you can there's just like a
30:42championship feeling in the building constantly and
30:47Not not that they're letting their foot off the gas and are riding high and enjoying this championship too much
30:52it's just more that I feel like that sort of
30:55Weight has been lifted off their shoulders and now now they know that they're capable of doing it
30:59They understand what it takes to get there and they're just
31:04just methodically going about
31:06the journey of
31:08trying to get another one and so
31:11It's it does feel different when you walk in there it feels lighter it feels
31:15I don't even know how to describe it and and i've i've only
31:18Feels like the rest of the time. Yeah, it feels like you're walking into a championship
31:23championship gym
31:25And I don't think you can discount that
31:28and I feel like
31:30We are going to see how these players react to that pretty quickly
31:35That by the way, it was my favorite celtics headline in a press release of all time was celtics signed scrub it was like
31:44It didn't have two b's his name has two b's right so that's right. Yeah
31:49No, we've we've been chatting about that the the you know, that's just teams ramping up for the regular season
31:53Does anything feel different doesn't look different? It certain feels like they're carrying themselves a little bit differently
31:59but at the same time you have to
32:01Keep that hyper focus, right? Because it's this like, you know, you're walking a fine line here
32:05Like yeah, we appreciate all the things that happened last year. We won the championship
32:09Uh, you know, that's the ultimate goal. But now, you know as missoula has talked about a little bit
32:15Uh, you know, they're the hunted they want the targets on their foreheads on their backs all these things
32:20So, you know in your estimation abby and again, you've only it's only been a handful of days
32:24you've been around and you know, we're still kind of ramping up at this thing, but
32:28It's lighter it's more fun. It's jovial. We love that but they're also like there isn't
32:33It just feels like there isn't that edge like on media day
32:36Jason hayden sat down and the first question was so you didn't play in the olympics and he was like damn
32:42that's what you're gonna that's how we're starting this and
32:45which but there was still an air of humor to it and a side of like
32:50I I am a champion. So yeah, knock me all you want say what you want
32:54I know that I have accomplished this goal that I set out my whole life to do. So sure do your worst
33:00I'm, not worried about that and you can just kind of feel that I don't want to put words into his mouth
33:05But that's I mean kind of the air that they're carrying themselves with it. It feels like a different confident
33:10And I think that that can only be a good thing
33:14Is that different confidence and if you listen to missoula, the answer is absolutely yes, but to a man to a player at least
33:21in what you've gathered
33:23Is that
33:24confidence
33:25Leading to the same hunger. Are they just as hungry for banner 19 as they were banner 18?
33:31I don't think joe missoula would let them feel satisfied about anything
33:35I mean as as jason mentioned, you know, no one was happier that he was sitting out
33:41major minutes of the olympics
33:43then joe missoula who
33:46Well, that's true
33:47And he will let jason know that also went to paris to kind of help him and be there for him in that situation. So
33:54joe is
33:56I think what we have learned about him is he is an incredible
34:01motivator an incredible coach an incredible culture setter and
34:05he
34:06Obviously is a sicko when it comes to studying that kind of stuff and then also implementing it and living by it
34:12and
34:13I think the players are going to
34:15Need that they needed it last season and it worked clearly
34:19They're gonna need it this season and I have no doubt in joe missoula right now
34:23You know to that point actually and this is we've talked about this throughout the off season a number of different ways
34:30But it's just another example of joe missoula
34:32Sort of beats to a different drum than most of us right than the average person
34:37I think this was part of starting five a clip that I saw on on twitter. Maybe the greenie put out
34:42uh was
34:44He was being asked he was being interviewed about
34:47The off season that jaylen brown has had and again being left off all nba not being part of the olympic conversation
34:54all of that and uh, you know, I think I don't I wish we could play the clip, but I think that
35:00He was asked basically, you know, jaylen brown has to deal with all this adversity and he cuts off the reporter and he says gets to
35:09Gets to do they're talking about jason. Yeah, this is a this is a tatum quote. Oh, that was the tatum
35:13I thought it was jaylen. So that was tatum. Okay. It's a lot about um, just like again
35:17I had a I had chad finn on the show about this about how
35:21Tatum seems to be like a lightning rod just for discussion
35:24And you know the fact that he didn't play in a game
35:28Like led the a block of every show on espn for like three straight days
35:33And it just drove me crazy because it's like man, I can't imagine dealing with this. This would drive me nuts
35:39I can't believe he's got to deal with this again
35:41It was more about as well as you could he wasn't saying anything, right?
35:46And that's the point of missoula. It's like no. No
35:48You're so good at what you do. You get to deal with this. This is yeah
35:52You might be an elite player. This is what comes the territory like and this is sort of the not the point
35:59I got with chad, but like one of the things i'd try to get to this this point of like
36:03He's just getting a treatment that most guys especially his age
36:08Don't get
36:09Like lebron says in starting five goes like i've been in the face of league since I was 20 years old
36:15They threw that at me. I had to deal with that
36:17It wasn't easy to deal with at that age
36:19And then he just eventually because I don't care what anybody says anymore
36:23Obviously lebron has accomplished as much as any athlete could have possibly accomplished in their lifetime as an athlete
36:29But he goes I don't sure cares. No, he goes
36:33Applying this stuff on twitter. Yeah
36:35Look the idea behind it right is yes
36:39Like it doesn't matter they're gonna say stuff
36:42I can't get I have to focus on what i'm doing to
36:45Keep my team going where it needs to be. And so tatum's at that point of
36:49You know, everybody's going to talk about you know, if he misses
36:5310 shots in a game or whatever and he's just got to learn how to roll with that and not let it bother him and focus
36:59On the task at hand or the next task at hand and be fine
37:01And that's what joe's getting at. It's like because you're so good
37:05you get to deal with all this scrutiny, which you should definitely
37:09And not not
37:11No, if you were bad, they wouldn't care. This is a privilege to be able
37:15to do that and to be the face of this team and
37:18goes back to the quarterback conversation, but
37:20If you win you get the praise and if you lose you get the blame and those are the realities
37:26But that is the privilege of being who you are playing for this team
37:30and
37:31Being a pillar for the boston celtics
37:34Well, and it's it's sort of that
37:36old adage
37:37I don't remember if it's an actual expression, but the the old adage of and it applies to everything professional athlete
37:44You know people work in broadcasting like you name it. It's it's you know
37:48Your love like howard stern, right? I don't know if he was the first one to say it
37:52But he often gets the credit for it, you know, love me or hate me
37:55But the last thing I want to be is ambivalent, you know, like or or have you be ambivalent toward me?
38:00Like I you know at least you know one way or another talking about me. That's the bottom line exactly and so that's the
38:08You know, it's it's not quite the you know, any pr is good pr. I mean that's a little bit different
38:13but I I do think that
38:14To that point like tatum matters enough that yes, he's going to get that kind of media coverage
38:20He's going to either have to or get to frame it. However, you want deal with all these things, but that's because
38:26He has earned that quite frankly now whether he wants it is a different story probably doesn't i'm sure it weighs on him
38:33It's agonizing. There are plenty of days. They'd probably
38:36You know like to be able to just whatever good
38:40Go to the gym and play go to the gym
38:42Like, you know just be left alone and be a normal human being you're not and you know
38:46You've worked all your life to become not that so it's uh
38:51it's just really interesting all the things that are surrounding this team right now and I
38:55You know, we were like I mentioned before we're being told that hunger is still there. I hope it is
39:01I mean, I I'm i'm tired of sort of talking about it and forecasting it. I can't wait to see it
39:06You know, I want to see the sequel to to the movie
39:09I want to see what what this next season looks like here because they did run it back
39:14Everybody's back. Everybody, you know is is ready to go of consequence
39:18I know that obviously like horford's going to be load managed like crazy
39:22Holiday may take a step back minutes wise because he's getting up there in age poor zing is probably isn't going to play half
39:27The year, but if they are all there
39:29come mid april
39:31That's all that matters. That's all that matters. It's just the regular season. It's going to be fun
39:36It's going to be enjoyable. You're going to be on the road constantly
39:39But it's just the run-up to the part that actually matters and that's what is exciting
39:44I'm, not saying ignore the regular season the journey's fun, too
39:47You know we had to oftentimes on this show sort of warn people against that last year like holy crap like
39:52Stop counting down to the conference finals. Like this is a good time, too
39:56And it was it was an incredible year and I I hope I hope that abby this is much the same obviously
40:03I hope so, too. I think that um
40:07There have been no indications that that is not the case
40:10and
40:11I think as evidenced by as evan mentioned all of the work that you see jason tatum and what he's doing behind the scenes
40:17And jalen brown coming to camp. I mean once again
40:22Jalen every single year comes back better worked on his game worked on his body
40:29and
40:30I don't think that's ever going to go away for him
40:33And I know you guys have talked about it ad nauseam about the fact that these guys do have motivation
40:38Despite the fact that they're coming off a championship run. The slights are there and you see it with these elite
40:45athletes
40:46these
40:47People that yes, you may need to have that chip on your shoulder
40:51But it's there and and I feel like part of what makes jason and jalen great is that it wasn't necessarily
40:58That they had to prove everyone wrong. It's that they wanted to accomplish
41:02that
41:03and
41:04It's all the more sweeter that they were
41:08Together it's all the more sweeter that they were able to prove all the naysayers wrong. But while I do
41:13Think that they hear all of that criticism. They're very focused and that's one of the I think
41:18Really greatest strengths of jomezula is that he gets them to be able to block out all of that noise
41:24And it is the focus you're focused on this team on what your role is on this game tonight and what needs to happen
41:31Yes, we are all
41:33Obviously on the same page and fighting for this ultimate
41:36Goal, but
41:38All I need you to do right now
41:40Is play this possession and do the best job do your job on this possession?
41:45and
41:46I think that those goals those immediate little inchy steps in the journey are
41:52what is important and it's that's where jomezula comes in and
41:57Will be the guy to make sure that that is what they are focused on
42:01And we are powered by game time football season
42:04It's here. Don't let people tell you football season's coming because listen the college football season
42:09That is I mean literally days away in the nfl season. That is beginning september 5th
42:14It is right around the corner the time to start planning is coming up the season
42:20Uh with our friends over at game time a great opportunity to get out to games
42:25Obviously game time is a new feature
42:26It is called game time picks makes getting tickets to see your favorite teams like the patriots for instance

42:39Okay shows you incredible deals on great seats. You don't have to waste time searching through thousands of tickets
42:45There's so many other places that it just you get bogged down game time. It just makes things so easy
42:50Yeah, my favorite part. I was scrolling through the other day and I was like
42:53This is what's really great is sometimes you have a significant other at home adam
42:57Some of us do as well. Sometimes you look at you see if you're gonna say we want to do today
43:02I don't know. What do you want to do today?
43:04Well, guess what game time has something for you. You can be a little spontaneous
43:09Get a little inspiration from game time. Let them help you with their this weekend tab scroll through and find some events

43:28Concerts comedy theater all of it is shown up front. No surprise fees at checkouts
43:34Which is my least favorite thing about buying tickets anywhere
43:38Uh, and you get a panoramic view from your seat in the app before you buy coffin
43:43It's just way easier take the guesswork out of buying tickets use game time
43:47Download the game time app create an account use the code clns again
43:51That is code clns for twenty dollars off your first purchase terms apply again create an account redeem the code
43:58It is c l n s twenty dollars off download the game time app today. What time is it game time?
44:08Yeah
44:10Yeah, well, you know the only thing i'll point out is everybody seems to think
44:14I would say various levels of extremely highly on joe mizula coffin
44:18I know if you have to look at the the gm survey, but joe mizula ranks pretty highly in a lot of those surveys
44:23he turned out, uh, whether it was the best offensive scheme or defensive scheme or best motivator, he's
44:29He's he wasn't in the top 10 for best coach, right? Or he like wasn't even like zero
44:34There was there was there's
44:36Depends on the list. I don't know if they if I if I have that one on hand that particular slide of it
44:41I just know if I go all the way through
44:44As I do this very quickly, um, like which head coach is the best manager slash motivator of people joe mizula finished top three there behind
44:51spolstra and steve kerr
44:54Um, who's best offense joe mizula came in behind rick carlisle, uh best defensive schemes
44:59Joe mizula came in fourth behind tibbs finch and spolstra like very highly thought of there was a there was a list that came
45:06Out from cbs where he was like 11 or 13th and it was like, how is this possible?
45:12How are the bunch of people watching
45:14yeah, that's what's all about but like
45:17again, the guys
45:18The guy's awesome. And as kaufman, you know, he would be a terrific life coach for you
45:22I think at some point you'd be you know, I know your career's here, but he'd take you to the top buddy
45:27Trust me. I have I I fear that I have plateaued I could use mizula to lift me up to that x level
45:35I don't know. I can't also that is not how I I know myself. I cannot live my life that way
45:40I do not walk into a performance of
45:44My daughter's little mermaid and think oh, they really nailed that breath and that scene change
45:50That's not what i'm looking for. So i'll tell you what though. I could I know I couldn't handle it
45:54I could live the mizula life
45:56And and all that comes with it a lot easier than I could live like the tom brady diet
46:00And and caring for my body that way
46:03I would fail at both of them. It's good. I'd fail at both
46:06I'm just saying which one i'd have an easier time with there's a reason we are not at this level
46:12There's a reason that I am
46:20Although avocado ice cream, I know this is controversial, but i'm not i'm not completely against it. I haven't had it
46:26I have zero opinion on it. It wasn't that bad. I like avocados and I like chocolate and then you mix them together
46:32I'm, i'm pretty warm. What what's bad about that? I I can't say i've tried it
46:38but
46:39I'm, a notoriously picky eater. Yeah coffin. You look like a picky eater just by
46:43I don't know. I think we had wings one time together and then we had like the
46:47The barbecue night and that's right all the things i've seen you eat and I can just by looking great wings and barbecue
46:53What's wrong with that? There's nothing about that. That's that's a
46:57What
46:58Show does stress me out though
46:59I don't do well with heat and then I can't imagine having to be on camera and like it's not pouring out of your nose
47:05Is your I would I would love to be on the hot one show
47:08Evan, I saw the ariana grande one and she didn't even flinch at the most
47:13That's psycho behavior. That was
47:15Impressive. I'll give jalen credit. He didn't take a sip of milk at all
47:20Not the entire I mean he didn't finish the wing which is my if I had to give him any, you know demerits
47:26Maybe he doesn't like milk
47:28But there's milk and water next to you when you do this. Okay. Now the the rumor is you gotta
47:34Actually have the milk before you eat
47:37I don't know that I can't tell you that to like
47:40To coat the stomach before you put it in
47:42Afterwards doesn't make as much sense but in in jalen brought this up a couple of times throughout the interview. He said
47:49Has anybody gone through this without?
47:52Like I said athlete ever gone he's challenging himself there hoffman
47:56He wants to be back. He finds new challenges. He did that on the show. Like i'm not taking any milk until this is over
48:03Are you actually concerned?
48:05He really wanted to challenge himself eat the wings
48:08Don't just take a couple of little nibbles eat the wings and try not to have explosive diarrhea before the end of the show
48:14That's how you have to challenge yourself. Jalen next time
48:17next time
48:18I mean no not absolutely not
48:20I give him credit for doing the last the last dab is tough
48:22And where you pour a little extra hot sauce on the last wing and you eat it
48:26That can't be as someone who likes spicy food
48:29And has done relative like different wing challenges
48:33Um that last one must have been brutal absolutely brutal to do I couldn't imagine doing it and again
48:38That's what makes the show so special is like you're answering questions
48:42At the same time and it really throws you off like in terms of what you might answer might be it was pretty interesting
48:48Before we let you go ab because I think we've uh, we've covered it all really. Um
48:54I know again, you weren't there but in talking to the players today or whichever
48:59I don't remember if this was the first media availability since their return, but
49:03Uh, how was the uh, the the trip experience overall the outside of the games?
49:07I know obviously there was community involvement. There was all sorts of you know, nba
49:12um
49:14I I hesitate to use the word mandated, but it's what it is, even though i'm sure they enjoyed it
49:17but and you know nba activity that that's part of the process was it was it an experience that overall that uh,
49:24You know, they they were glad they were part of
49:28Definitely, I I think I mean jalen brown as we know enjoyed it very much and sees the value in that
49:35Uh, jason tatum said today, you know, it was an experience
49:39even though he's been there it's it's the hospitality and the the people are wonderful and
49:47um, it's always something that
49:51He enjoys it was interesting talking to joe who missoula who I think um
49:56Initially, you know as a coach does not want to have to drag his team
50:01Across the world to play two games and have to come back and try to refocus and realign
50:06but even he seemed
50:09at peace with it and and felt like it was
50:12Something that was productive for his group and then also he mentioned that
50:18Because I asked him I mean just the adjustment for your bodies and the celtics did they had three days off before they today
50:24Was their first practice on thursday since they came back?
50:27Um first full team practice and he said, you know, it's actually harder going out there than coming back
50:33Which I feel like it's true even when you're going west coast to east coast
50:38you know, it's so much easier to go to california and gain those hours back than it is to come back east and lose all
50:43That time and trying to figure out
50:45What time of day it actually is and adjusting your body clock to that. So I think that's a good sign
50:50i'm, not sure they knew what
50:52Uh, they knew it would be that way and I did ask joe what you know
50:55The medical staff is doing to kind of mitigate some of those effects and he's like, I don't know
51:00That's not that's not my job. So
51:03uh
51:04Obviously the team is aware of it. I think that like where we started this conversation. I think that's what the team was
51:11Planning for they had a ton of space off in between
51:14And then they're going to get these games in and then have a ton of time
51:17afterwards to regroup before
51:19ring ceremony
51:21opening night on october 22nd, which
51:24will preview heavily but
51:27It is going to be huge. Did you see the tnt release evan?
51:30Oh
51:31That they're gonna have so like the entire tnt crew is there ernie johnson charles barclay shack all of those guys, but then um
51:39Shaboosie, I think is performing pregame
51:45The hockey club he's really making his rounds right now
51:48They're going up. They're going all out. They should it's it's well earned for sure
51:52But I did see the shaboosie thing. I did see that. I didn't know. Well, I figured tnt would be there, but i'm so
51:58Fired up. I got to figure out what i'm like what the menu's gonna look like that night
52:01so I have like
52:02Everything kind of set up get the ambience, right, you know, make sure
52:06You know look cough. It's a big night, buddy
52:09Look, you haven't seen one of these in a while. So soak it all in, you know
52:13I'm probably gonna put on a sweater or something change dressed up coffin ring night. Come on
52:20I'll put on pull on a celtic sweatshirt. How about that?
52:23I don't know. It's really going for it get in the spirit. Jeez a nice one a new one. Maybe or at least a clean one
52:30I oh, yeah
52:32I wash my clothes. I just don't
52:34Go out and do anything
52:37Is
52:39I'll bring you one. Don't worry. Thank you. Please
52:42Evan's gonna get me fitted. It's gonna be well. Yeah, I sent forest berger shirt. He wore it on air, which was nice
52:47Hasn't given you any clothes or anything like that? No for all these years. I keep nudging him. It hasn't happened yet
52:53I don't know doing it on the air. Maybe it'll get through
52:57I haven't I have a rough idea of what your sizes are. I think I can figure it out
53:01You cannot criticize his clothing if you're not willing to fix it. You see? Well, you know
53:07He has a car he can come I tell my wife the same thing
53:10You gotta stop complaining about what's in the closet. If you want you can go out and order me something else
53:15This is I don't know
53:17Hard to shop for men i've shopped for my husband before and he's like no that's not happening
53:21So that was a waste it's not my color it's not my style
53:25Anything that uh that people should be on the lookout for this season broadcast wise that uh, you know are just you know
53:32Your fans your viewers of nbc sports boston that are excited for a new year
53:36First full season of drew carter on play by play. Although I am sad. I I um
53:42Obviously bittersweet. I texted with mike foreman the other day and um, he will be there on october 22nd
53:49So i'm excited to see him. I haven't seen him all summer, but he'll be around and I think that he'll be around
53:53The organization and I don't know in what capacity but um, i'm hoping we see him
53:59um
54:00around the garden and stuff and then uh,
54:03Kayla, burton has joined the broadcast team
54:06and she will um be assisting tom giles on
54:09I don't know if that's the correct phrase
54:10She will she will be co-hosting along tom along with tom giles on pre and post and then also
54:16Michael holly has been added. I think they're trying to
54:20Beef up our celtics coverage of the champions
