00:00 the result that we wanted.
00:02 B is obviously one of the more difficult players to guard. I thought we actually, at the beginning of the game,
00:11 it's tough when he's not dribbling, he's stationary, and it's hard to help, but I thought we settled in,
00:18 did a few things.
00:22 Anything that you do
00:24 over a consistent period of time, he's capable of figuring it out because he's so skilled.
00:28 I think we need to continue to emphasize our defensive rebounding.
00:35 There was a point in the first half where we were getting stops, and
00:39 regardless of
00:43 our size down the back line, we have to
00:46 do our best to get into bodies and come up with those rebounds because it allows us to
00:50 get out of transition and get some easy baskets, which is really important to us.
00:56 I was going to ask about the offensive rebounding for Philly,
01:00 but when they're kicking the ball out, when you guys try to crash the blast and they're finding those open shooters,
01:05 how do you guys kind of rotate out to make sure that you're eliminating those second chance threes?
01:10 Yeah, that's probably one of the more difficult plays.
01:13 You know, you see that really across the league, and people emphasize it. We try to do it.
01:19 Call them daggers, just put it in their head.
01:23 When
01:25 someone that gets that rebound has an angle,
01:27 you know, a lot of times if you're inside them and
01:33 they're getting the ball, it's an easy kick out.
01:36 Once you get down there, there's really no man-orientation.
01:42 So it becomes a really difficult play to guard, the way you guard it is
01:48 coming up with the rebound.
01:50 And coach, despite the fourth quarter, six turnovers, only at seven to do the first three quarters,
01:55 how happy are you with the team's security of the ball and those live ball situations, getting the run outs?
02:01 Yeah, I thought our transition defense was better.
02:06 But as you said, live ball turnovers are really hard to defend against.
02:13 The other thing that's hard to defend against is when you drive the ball, you just don't have floor balance.
02:21 Against someone like Max, he pushes it so well.
02:23 It's tough, but we did do a better job taking care of the ball.
02:31 There's a few
02:34 hot spots, so to speak, where
02:36 we find ourselves in a situation
02:38 that becomes a higher probability.
02:42 A lot of teams are really compressing the paint.
02:47 We need to keep our feet and
02:49 think and do a little bit more in those situations because it's tough if someone gets a hand on the ball,
02:57 a collapse like that, and we're spaced.
03:00 It's tough, those are usually turnovers. We had some error at once too,
03:05 late, as you said, where we didn't make
03:09 accurate pass.
03:11 It's something we look at and try to identify
03:14 where certain guys, if there's something that consistently is happening,
03:20 that's something that we watch on film and
03:24 raise awareness. Sometimes it's a physical habit
03:29 someone can address and be better.
03:33 You're now one and one in the in-season tournament.
03:38 How much did that play a role in preparation and how much are you paying attention to the in-season tournament?
03:44 We talked about this a little bit, and to be honest, the more I've talked about it and thought about it,
03:52 the more clarity you get on
03:55 the things that are different.
04:00 I think the level of the game
04:03 was
04:05 going to be competitive regardless of that. I do think as the game progresses,
04:11 towards the end of the game,
04:13 regardless of your win probability or anything like that, you really want to keep trying to score.
04:21 There's a balance there.
04:24 In the situation they're in, they had a large enough lead where
04:28 they were likely going to win the game, unless we did something
04:34 not miraculous, but something really, really good and got a few steals and a few shots.
04:42 I'm talking about under two minutes.
04:44 I think that's the time you have an opportunity to speed them up.
04:49 But that's dangerous too, because if you're doing that and you're giving up easy baskets,
04:55 that doesn't help your point differential. I think the point differential is something that we'll continue to see,
05:04 particularly as we get further along in the tournament,
05:08 particularly with respect to the wild card situations.
05:12 Hey Coach,
05:16 we noticed a little bit on the defensive side, the baseline, those backdoor cuts, even going back to the Knicks game.
05:22 Is that something you guys have picked up on or noticed as a coaching staff as well?
05:25 Yeah, frankly it happened. Thompson got us on a couple cuts
05:30 the other night as well. We got a sink lower. We're too high. When the pick and roll occurs,
05:38 I'm a high-heel side, high-quad defender. I sink down and take that cutter.
05:43 It's his job to take the responsibility of the corner three as well.
05:47 That's a specific area where we need to be better.
05:50 It's not hard to see it
05:54 when you're getting back. There was one time in particular, the hard thing is you can be good
05:59 during the possession and oftentimes, even if they don't hit that player,
06:05 they put themselves in a tough position on the offensive glass. Tough for us, that is.
06:09 Glenn, do you have a philosophy when it comes to using your coach's challenge? I know you kind of went through it a little early tonight with the youngsters attending.
06:17 Usually, you could get in the weeds on that.
06:21 There's times when it's
06:26 for a particular player, a foul situation where it can impact the game
06:33 to take something away. Usually, you want to take points off the board
06:38 or have an opportunity to put them on one way or the other.
06:42 You know, situations that end up in
06:45 change of possession. It is a little different now
06:49 with two challenges.
06:52 That said,
06:54 it also impacts your timeouts. That's part of the role that
06:57 as we go through it, they're really looking at it.
07:02 And then sometimes, you know, there's a morale. There's a certain player that
07:07 you want to support a player in a given situation. Not at the expense of not having one late.
07:13 I think having two late, there's a lot of times where people have ended up
07:18 with their challenges at the end of the game.
07:20 That's where your balance is really. To have that opportunity to really impact the game late when you do have a challenge.
07:27 Then over the course of the game.
07:30 So finding that balance,
07:32 you know, the most important thing is if you think you're going to be right.
07:36 Sometimes that's harder to tell than others. In that one situation, that would have put points on the board.
07:43 We're not looking at the monitor. We're trying to size it up. That would have put two points on the board.
07:52 Coach, I thought we had a call.
07:57 Yeah, sorry.
07:59 You've been doing a lot of production for a lot of people on the team.
08:01 The last two games, DeJounte has been coming on strong later in the game. Is there a way to get him involved earlier?
08:07 You know, a lot of times the game can dictate what's available.
08:16 We want DJ to be aggressive.
08:19 We want a lot of our guys to be aggressive. Particularly running, shooting, getting out in transition,
08:26 being done,
08:29 walk up three today. It was really in front of our best. It's a shot that he works on.
08:34 I really like.
08:37 If he has the confidence to take it, which he does, some of those shots, you can rebound. I think DJ's catching shoots.
08:44 He's been doing that.
08:46 And then obviously his ability to attack the rim.
08:49 Quinn, did you see what happened with DeAndre, with that foul?
08:55 Did the officials explain anything to you? What was it like to lose him?
08:59 Well, it hurt. It's a big part of what we do.
09:03 Both ends of the floor.
09:06 It was unfortunate that that was the result.
09:11 The play itself, you could see how there's frustration when you're laying on the ground.
09:22 But the rules on that play are more complicated than I want to get into.
09:31 Thanks, Coach.
09:32 Okay.
09:32 Thanks, Coach.
