Lonely elderly cat finally gets the life he deserves
Transcript
00:00 What's up?
00:01 There was a cat on the third stair going up from our floor of our apartment.
00:06 He looked really old.
00:07 He looked like he hadn't been fed or given water in quite a while.
00:10 I tried to pick him up and he just let me, and so I brought him into our apartment.
00:15 You could tell that he was sad and almost giving up.
00:17 His ears were turned down.
00:19 His eyes were almost closed.
00:21 His face was swollen.
00:22 I attempted to give him some water out of a little bowl and give him some food, and
00:26 he was taking to that.
00:27 Yeah, good boy.
00:28 He was very matted.
00:30 We had to shave his fur off, and when we were washing him the first few times, there was
00:34 just gray water flowing into our drain.
00:37 He had the smell of garbage as if he was in the street just eating the scraps of whatever
00:40 he could.
00:41 When washing him, he was licking our hands and purring the whole time.
00:46 Every time I gave him any food, he would look at me and meow.
00:48 It was like he was saying thank you.
00:50 We were just so impressed by how kind of a cat he was with everything that he had gone
00:54 through.
00:55 We reached out to people in the building.
00:56 Nobody knows anything about him.
00:58 We have no idea if maybe he had an owner in the building, that something happened to them.
01:02 When we took him to the vet, they scanned him to see if he had a chip, and he did, but
01:05 it was unreadable.
01:06 Meow.
01:07 We spent the first, I want to say, three, four days in that bathroom area just until
01:11 we could get him to the vet and see that he had passed a health check, basically nothing
01:15 that he could pass on to our other two cats.
01:18 Also, it's not good to introduce cats so quickly, so we were slowly introducing them.
01:22 Good night, buddy.
01:23 Otto was very nervous from the start, and when people walked by, he'd run into his litter
01:28 box.
01:29 Now he's getting more adjusted, but he does sometimes still run away quick when someone
01:33 reaches over to grab something that's over him.
01:36 But overall, he's very lovable.
01:38 He looks like an old soul.
01:41 You look into his eyes, it's almost like you can see into his soul and how kind he is.
01:44 We just weighed him a few days ago, and now he's up to 11, so he's getting to be at the
01:49 lower end of the average for a male cat weight.
01:51 So he still has some weight to put on, but he was only seven and a half when we took
01:55 him to the vet.
01:56 I was fostering him, but we did decide to adopt him once we realized that he could get
02:00 along with our cats.
02:01 That was my biggest hurdle, was just making sure that Sam and Dean, our other two cats,
02:04 were comfortable with him.
02:06 He's trying to find his pecking order, I'd say.
02:08 He's blinking slowly, like, "Hi, I'm so friendly.
02:10 I fit in.
02:11 I just want to be one of the family."
02:14 I look at him and I feel sad for everything that he's been through, but I'm happy knowing
02:18 that he's more than deserving of everything that he has.
02:21 What are you doing?
02:23 I don't think that he's ever been fully cared for in the way that he is now.
02:27 With Otto, it's like he chose us, is kind of what it feels like.
02:32 Something that he still does to this day.
02:33 Every time we give him food or treats or anything, he meows and just looks at us with such appreciation.
02:38 Someone asked if he's ever tried to go outside since he's came in, and he has not.
02:43 He stays in this one living room area.
02:45 He has access to the entire apartment, but whenever we've picked him up and set him in
02:49 another space, just the room right off of here, he'll go back to his couch.
02:53 It's kind of a safe haven, but slowly he's starting to open up more and more.
02:56 Are you excited about your gifts?
02:59 He's purring right behind me right now as we talk.
03:01 We see improvements every day, like him coming to cuddle with us on the couch or him exploring
03:06 more further into the apartment, playing around with toys that he sees every now and then.
03:10 So I think we still have some time until we figure out who the real Otto is.
