00:00 Screaming like a woman in a horror film.
00:02 That's what he would sound like.
00:03 (screaming)
00:06 He doesn't like huskies.
00:07 (screaming)
00:08 We are Lauren and Harrison,
00:10 and this is Mordecai's story for GeoBeats.
00:12 - I'm about to wake up our deaf dog.
00:14 - Because he's deaf and he can't hear us,
00:17 he just needs to be like touching us at all times.
00:20 He's just an odd guy.
00:21 We had people come up to us and be like,
00:22 "Is everything okay?"
00:23 Thinking I was screaming,
00:24 and I'm like, "Oh yeah, that's just my dog.
00:25 He saw a husky."
00:26 (screaming)
00:29 We found him through a rescue called Speak for the Unspoken.
00:33 - He's...
00:34 - He's deaf.
00:36 - We don't know too much about his background.
00:38 - He just wants to be a part of the conversation.
00:39 - Yeah.
00:41 All we know is that he was sent around
00:43 and was adopted out for only a couple of days
00:45 and was sent back, at which point we found him.
00:47 - We weren't looking for a deaf dog,
00:50 but we do have two cats with disabilities already.
00:54 So they were like,
00:54 "We think this one would be a great fit for you."
00:56 He sits on me like this.
00:59 In all of my meetings.
01:01 We've been able to gather just by the way he acts
01:03 and things like that,
01:04 that he came from an abuse situation in the South,
01:06 just based on the kinds of people he's afraid of
01:09 and the way he reacts.
01:10 I love having a deaf dog.
01:12 He doesn't react when there's fireworks
01:14 or when the doorbell rings.
01:15 So from a convenience aspect, he's A+.
01:18 (screaming)
01:19 Of course it comes with its downsides.
01:21 If he were to run away, we can't call him back.
01:23 We have a GPS tracker on him for that reason.
01:25 Or when he's out in the yard barking,
01:27 we look like terrible dog parents
01:29 because we don't yell at him to come in because we can't.
01:34 He thinks the entire park we live by is his.
01:37 (screeching)
01:38 And doesn't quite understand
01:40 that other people can be on the park too.
01:42 He will go nuts, especially if they're huskies.
01:46 Typically doesn't sound like regular barking.
01:47 (screeching)
01:48 We like to say like a woman in a horror film.
01:51 (screeching)
01:53 He's way louder than I think he ever realizes
01:56 he's being, but that's okay.
01:58 We love him.
01:59 (screeching)
02:01 He has puppy energy.
02:02 So like, dude never stops moving.
02:04 He's very, very intelligent.
02:06 We taught him sign language.
02:08 He doesn't like the smell of cleaning products.
02:09 If he's in a different room,
02:11 he'll know I'm cleaning and he'll get mad.
02:13 And no dancing.
02:14 He does not like dancing.
02:16 He has definitely got some anxiety issues.
02:18 He's on Prozac, which has helped as far as just getting him
02:21 to be able to be himself a little bit more
02:23 and not be as on high alert.
02:24 He just wants snuggles.
02:26 Overall, he's very friendly.
02:28 Once he gets to know you, he will snuggle up all over you.
02:31 (screeching)
02:32 We just had someone stay for a few days who he had never met.
02:36 - What is happening?
02:37 - What is he doing? - What is this dream about?
02:38 - Night one, she was here.
02:40 He curled up in bed with her
02:41 and she sent us the sweetest picture.
02:43 He walks up to the mailman every day
02:45 and like flops down for him to be pet.
02:47 I call him my son.
02:48 Which he does not understand, but we use the,
02:52 "Ati, I love you a lot."
02:53 And I'm in his tails wagging
02:54 'cause he sees me doing that right now.
02:56 Dogs like him are written off so much
02:58 just because they're a little different.
03:00 (laughing)
03:01 He's happy, he's exactly the right dog for our family.
03:05 I wouldn't change him.
03:06 Should I wake him up?
03:10 - No, he's like, "Be right back."
03:11 (screeching)
03:14 (screeching)
03:17 (upbeat music)
