The moment breeder dog realized she was free
Transcript
00:00 She apparently spent most of her life being tied to a chain,
00:03 having litter after litter of puppies.
00:05 Want to try a carrot?
00:06 When they no longer found her useful, they just abandoned her on the side of the road.
00:09 She was picked up and brought to the Humane Society.
00:14 They wanted to rescue a senior dog.
00:15 There's a rescue, Albert's Dog Lounge Rescue.
00:18 I happened to see Midge on their site.
00:20 And it was kind of an immediate, "Oh my gosh, I love this dog."
00:23 I went outside to meet the foster mom who brought her to our house.
00:27 And as soon as Midge came out of the car, she wiggled her way right up to me.
00:30 Very happy to see me.
00:31 We are lucky to have a fenced-in yard, so Midge got to do plenty of exploring.
00:47 Midge, come here.
00:48 Midgey.
00:58 For the first few weeks or so, I would put her in a crate at night
01:02 to get her and make sure she was crate-trained.
01:04 It didn't last long, and she ended up in my bed.
01:06 She has arthritis because I don't think she really ever got any exercise.
01:12 What do you got there, Midge?
01:14 You got stuck?
01:15 She doesn't walk too fast.
01:17 We'll sniff everything if we go on a walk.
01:19 So we're constantly stopping so she can check out the neighborhood.
01:22 She's an amazing, sweet dog.
01:24 My husband plays guitar, and she enjoys and will sit down and listen to him playing.
01:29 She loves the vet.
01:30 Everyone comes out to meet her when Midge is there.
01:33 When she had heartworm treatment, they kept her behind the counter
01:37 and took care of her up there instead of leaving her in a cage
01:40 because they wanted to spend time with her.
01:41 This is for you.
01:43 [laughs]
01:44 I don't know if she was outright abused, just maybe neglected.
01:48 So I think she really appreciates any kind of attention she can get from people.
01:53 I'm hoping, with a little extra training, that we can get her registered as a therapy dog
01:59 and do visits at nursing homes and hospitals and the like
02:03 because it's enjoyable to her to meet with people.
02:05 [dog barks]
02:06 Look at that fella.
02:07 When my daughters come to visit, it's like,
02:08 "Oh, hey, I haven't seen you in forever. Thanks for coming."
02:11 [laughs] Look at my wiggly girl.
02:13 Because of her history, she probably is a little protective of things that are hers
02:17 and probably didn't get fed on a regular basis or have toys to play with.
02:21 So when we do have other dogs here, all the toys are put away
02:24 because that's, you know, her thing, and we don't need to make her anxious.
02:28 She has no problem with me, you know, giving her a little love.
02:31 Can you give me some kisses?
02:33 Yes, thank you, Midgey. I appreciate that.
02:35 That's my girl.
02:37 [laughs]
02:38 It warms my heart that she finds so much happiness now.
02:42 She's a dog, I think, who is a cup half full rather than a cup half empty.
02:47 She makes the most of it.
02:53 Even if it's raining or snowing outside, she's still happy to go out there and run around.
02:57 [laughs]
03:00 What do you think, Midge?
03:04 No carrots.
