00:00 Hi.
00:00 Hi.
00:01 This cat is the most unique soul that I've ever met.
00:04 How's your dinner?
00:04 [MEOWING]
00:05 [SCREAM]
00:06 I'm Jandy, and this is Bruce's story for GOP.
00:10 I was volunteering for our local shelter,
00:12 and a woman called the shelter.
00:13 And she said, I have this neonatal kitten
00:15 underneath dumpster on the hot cement.
00:18 And so I went out to get the kitten.
00:20 On the way there, they called me back.
00:21 And they said, never mind.
00:23 You don't have to go.
00:24 The woman decided she was going to keep this neonatal kitten.
00:27 Good job.
00:28 I said, OK, but there was something inside me
00:30 that wanted to go anyway.
00:31 Since when is there only one newborn kitten?
00:34 And I started looking through all the dumpsters
00:36 just to make sure there weren't any other kittens.
00:38 And underneath the last dumpster,
00:40 I heard this big, bellowing meow.
00:42 And it was Bruce.
00:43 [SCREAM]
00:44 I looked at the mama cat.
00:45 I put out traps.
00:46 I talked to the neighbors.
00:47 I was really hoping to get the mom
00:49 and bring her and reunite her with the babies,
00:51 but I could never find her.
00:52 I see those big eyes.
00:54 I did get in contact with the other woman.
00:56 She had his sister, and she said,
00:58 I don't really know what I'm doing.
00:59 And I said, they'll have a better chance
01:01 if they're together.
01:02 She brought the girl over to me, and I
01:04 fostered both of them together.
01:05 Good job, Bruce.
01:07 First couple of months, I was feeding around the clock
01:09 every two hours.
01:10 You're so precious.
01:12 When Duke was old enough, AC adopted her.
01:14 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:17 I was keeping an eye out for people to adopt Bruce,
01:26 but I realized I wasn't going to trust anybody else with this
01:28 cat.
01:29 He was mine.
01:29 [SCREAM]
01:31 [LAUGHTER]
01:35 He's adventurous and vivacious.
01:37 I'm watching.
01:38 [LAUGHTER]
01:39 Has a spirit that is larger than life.
01:42 [LAUGHTER]
01:43 You got me.
01:44 Hi, Bruce.
01:45 Bruce.
01:46 My baby.
01:48 Hi.
01:49 [LAUGHTER]
01:52 I can laugh, and you can be in trouble at the same time.
01:56 I do a lot of rescue work.
01:57 I work with a lot of animals.
01:59 But the bond that Bruce and I have,
02:01 I think that he understands how much I love him.
02:03 And he loves me in the same way.
02:05 What's wrong?
02:07 [MEOW]
02:09 I know.
02:10 It's OK.
02:11 At eight months old, he suddenly fell ill.
02:13 I took him to the emergency room,
02:15 and he was diagnosed with large cell lymphoma.
02:18 Don't worry.
02:20 You're OK, OK?
02:21 [MEOW]
02:23 I knew this veterinary oncologist who's wonderful.
02:26 And I called her, I'll never forget, on a Saturday.
02:29 I begged her, I said, is there anything
02:30 I can do to get in on Monday?
02:31 She said, we can't wait till Monday.
02:36 She said, can you come in today?
02:37 Saturday night, she opened the clinic,
02:39 and she gave him a rescue remedy.
02:41 And she said, if this works, we can talk about the net death.
02:44 Oh, good boy.
02:45 And thereafter, it was eight months of treatment.
02:48 And it did not look like he was going to survive.
02:52 You're such a good boy.
02:55 I could not give up on him.
02:57 He went into remission, shocked everybody.
03:00 You going to play?
03:01 [MEOW]
03:02 I just wanted him to be able to play again and be a kitten.
03:06 And we got to go on all our adventures together,
03:08 to the river and on trips.
03:10 And I got to play with his litter mate, his friends.
03:13 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:16 [MEOW]
03:18 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:21 Then this summer, he relapsed.
03:23 And that was in July.
03:25 They gave him the same prognosis a few weeks to a few months.
03:28 And here we are in January, and he's doing great.
03:33 Good job.
03:34 His pain is very well managed.
03:35 He's happy.
03:36 He feels good.
03:37 He's responded to treatment.
03:39 He's just a little miracle man.
03:41 Good morning.
03:42 [MEOW]
03:43 [MEOW]
03:44 He wants to tell me about everything
03:45 that he does and what.
03:47 Tell me about it.
03:48 [MEOW]
03:49 He has a different meow for everything.
03:52 And we have our own little language.
03:54 You go outside?
03:55 [MEOW]
03:56 [MEOW]
03:57 [MEOW]
03:58 He has a scream for when I leave the house without him.
04:02 He runs to the window, and he bellows after me.
04:06 The whole street can hear him.
04:08 He doesn't want to be left at home.
04:09 Who is it?
04:10 [MEOW]
04:11 [MEOW]
04:12 [MEOW]
04:13 This kitten had a different start in life
04:15 in that we were never apart.
04:17 And I think that's why we developed such a bond.
04:20 He's my baby.
04:22 [MEOW]
04:24 [MEOW]
04:26 (upbeat music)
04:28 [MUSIC PLAYING]
