Kansas guards S'mya Nichols and Zakiyah Franklin speak with the media after their 60-58 win over Iowa State in Allen Fieldhouse
Transcript
00:00 >> You guys obviously played the Cyclones not too long ago.
00:03 What was different this time as opposed to last time where you had to deal with
00:07 the three point barrage in the second half of the last game?
00:11 >> I just think we were more aggressive on the defensive end.
00:13 We kind of took what we did over there in Aims in the first quarter and
00:17 we put it together for a whole game.
00:18 So I just think overall just aggressive ball pressure.
00:22 It was a little hard on them to, I guess, get skip threes and stuff like that.
00:25 So basically just sticking to the scouting report.
00:29 Listen to whatever we have to do.
00:32 >> Your guys' largest league was five and theirs was four.
00:34 So no one team really pulled away.
00:36 What do you think it was that kind of sealed the deal for you guys in this one?
00:39 >> I feel like we had the momentum.
00:42 Of course, there was scoring.
00:44 Just because the team scored does not mean we had momentum.
00:47 We had the energy.
00:48 We never let up.
00:49 We were just, I feel like, the most determined team.
00:54 >> So Maya, I mean, you and Addie Brown have probably had a couple of matchups or
00:57 at least been able to talk throughout the years.
01:00 What do you think about the Big 12 freshman class that's come in and
01:03 then tonight with Addie and Addie?
01:05 >> I think the Big 12 freshmen are really good.
01:10 I mean, there's a killer, I feel like, on every single team.
01:14 And Iowa State's freshmen, both of them, I give them full credit.
01:18 They're great players.
01:20 And I mean, it was great going against them tonight.

01:23 >> You need to win?
01:24 >> I told you that.
01:25 >> [LAUGH] >> This is the second game in a row where
01:29 you guys have found a lot of success driving into the paint, even without Tiana.
01:32 So what do you think it is about this group of players that kind of just allows
01:36 you to do that team-wide?
01:37 >> I just think everyone is able to be aggressive and just get in the lane,
01:42 whether it's creative, our own shots or just creating for each other.
01:45 We preach that all the time in practice.
01:47 So I just think that's what it is.
01:51 >> I just think we're a very versatile team.
01:53 I mean, if you stop one thing, you can't stop another.
01:55 >> And then just how did Tiana's aggressiveness on defense kind of impact
02:00 the team as a whole?
02:01 She really shut down on you in that first half and
02:03 kind of was just all over the place.
02:06 >> I mean, she made Audie take really tough shots, which helped in our favor.
02:10 >> Yeah, I agree. She did a great job on her.
02:15 I think she was playing through a lot of frustration too,
02:18 as far as calls and stuff like that.
02:19 But I think she was able to get it down on a defensive end and
02:22 that was able to work out in our favor.
02:24 >> What about Danai?
02:26 Being able to come in and having some up and downs, but
02:30 definitely making it much more difficult than I think many people thought.
02:35 >> Yes, I mean, personally, I think she did great.
02:38 She came in for twin to take her spot real quick.
02:42 And of course, she gave up a couple fouls, but I mean, those are good fouls.
02:47 Sometimes we need people on the bench to foul for us, honestly.
02:51 >> What do you think it's gonna take to sustain these kind of results on the road?
02:55 >> I just think just going on the road and just being us.
03:01 We've talked about how there's really no difference in what we do inside of
03:05 the island to on the road.
03:06 We've sat and had a lot of talks as a team, and I think just going on the road and
03:10 just performing how we performed tonight, I think we can get the job done every night.
03:16 >> She got it.
