00:00 Hogan is deaf and visually impaired.
00:04 Surrendered from a breeder who had a mistake litter.
00:08 Great Dane Rescue contacted us and asked us if we would be interested in adopting him
00:13 and we were given that opportunity.
00:16 I'm Crystal and this is Hogan's story for GeoBeats.
00:20 It was love at first sight.
00:22 I just want him to live the fullest life that he can and experience all the things.
00:29 I don't want him to miss out.
00:30 He's up for whatever venture I want to take him on.
00:33 He's completely deaf.
00:38 We've done testing ourselves here, dropping things, yelling, calling him from another room
00:46 and throughout the months that we've had him we realized that he was also visually impaired.
00:51 The vet said his pupils are underdeveloped.
00:55 He has major light sensitivity and was running into cars that were parked and falling off of curbs.
01:01 Sometimes when he sees a shadow or something moving funny or something he thinks he sees,
01:09 he will bark. We can't figure out why.
01:11 He wears goggles. They really seem to improve his vision during the sunlight hours.
01:17 He is trained to come with a vibrating collar that we have.
01:23 So I have the trigger in my hand and he's wearing a collar and when he feels it vibrate,
01:27 he needs to come back and check in.
01:29 It's just like your Fitbit vibrating on your wrist.
01:31 We use sign language. We've taught him signs but we have to use large sign language.
01:37 So much of it we have made up on our own because he's also visually impaired.
01:41 He knows sit and stay and come and paw.
01:50 He knows away and off.
01:52 We're trying to teach him around.
01:54 He's super happy-go-lucky. He just wants to be close to you.
01:57 I think that he's very intuitive and he knows what I need when I need it the most
02:01 and that's what he gives or portrays.
02:04 He loves to snuggle. He gets super excited when you cuddle.
02:07 So it takes him a while to calm down.
02:09 There are so many rescues in need.
02:14 All of our animals are adopted. We have five.
02:16 They're adopted or rescued from somewhere.
02:19 He's 98 pounds so far.
02:21 My first Great Dane was 160 pounds.
02:24 My second Great Dane was 140 pounds.
02:26 He's still got some filling out to do that's for sure.
02:29 He's pretty petite.
02:30 I feel gracious. We could not be happier than giving the opportunity to adopt this unique soul.
02:39 He brings a lot of light and happiness into our lives and he means so much to us.
02:43 He makes our lives richer because he is in it.
02:50 We got really, really lucky.
02:53 [knocking]
02:55 [laughing]
